<media:description>My Grandad lived a very long life. He had plenty of time to contemplate his final resting place. When he started watching Katie's videos, many of which feature the North Yorkshire Moors, he knew that's where he wanted to end up. So in late summer I collected his ashes, travelled up north and Katie joined me to make his wish come true.

He will be missed - which at the end of a person's life, is really all they can ask for. He will be missed by friends and family of course, but also by many of you, people he never met but he was chuffed to bits to have entertained. Once my mum had shown him how, he took great delight in re-watching the videos he was in and reading all the comments left under them.

My thanks to all of you for helping make his last years that bit brighter.</media:description>

<media:description>Something I've wanted to do for many years is make my own axe, a gift of a very old broken axehead inspired me to get on with it!

The original axe was made by folding wrought iron around a former to make the eye for the handle. Welding the join shut and welding in a high carbon steel cutting edge. For my re-make I am forging the whole thing from one lump of high carbon steel. I'm aided in the task by my homemade power hammer and for the first time - the new (old) flypress.

The Kent pattern is a very old design of axe and just about the only regional English axe pattern to survive into modern times.

<media:description>The workshop has recently acquired two super new (old) metalworking machines, a giant bench shear and a flypress. In this video we concentrate on the flypress and get it stripped down, cleaned up and ready for work. Along the way I'll explain how it works and why it's so great!

Next video will be all about the tooling and in the one after that, I'll put the press to use making an axe.

More information on the Benson company, manufacturer of the flypress, can be found in the links below:

This time it's a 4 post lift. On the up side it was a mere £100 - on the downside it's a long way away, needs dismantling and is stuck behind a whole load of fancy cars. Going to be a long day!

<media:description>Here in part 2 we get stuck into the actual making. Two methods go head to head, the way I used to do it many years ago verses one I've only just learnt about. After a bit of a poor first go we get a decent result second time around. I've described all my mistakes in detail so you can avoid them!
I ended up with 2 binloads of high quality charcoal which will be used in my next forging project.

The videos I mentioned are:

The new (to me) method

The barrel as pit kiln method

<media:description>Charcoal making, not just the how but also the why!
Here I discuss the what actually happens when you burn wood and how that relates to charcoal. Then describe a couple of different methods of making charcoal before preparing some old oil drums. In part 2 I'll show two different ways to use them for charcoal production.

<media:description>A video inspired by a request from one of my patrons who's daughter wants to try blacksmithing. This got me thinking about what the most basic forge setup might be - and here it is!

I chat about the tools you need. Then demonstrate you don't need to spend much money on special equipment by knocking up a forge, setting up an anvil and finish with making a small project.

<media:description>A trip mainly intended to test some kit (and my ability to carry it!), before going on a extended adventure in the near future.
My camera played up on me badly, I lost a lot of footage and of what's left the quality of both audio and video is not great but the trip was so fun I wanted to share it anyway.
Camera has already been upgraded in preparation for the next trip!

Some extra details of what was on test:
Rain gear
Royal Navy current issue Gortex Coat £55 used
Royal Navy current issue MVP (Gortex) trousers £17.50 used
Both were excellent

Navigation
Garmin 62st GPS £140 used
Tiny screen makes it no substitute for a proper map but for knowing in an instant where you are and being able to stick to the trail it excels.

Tent
Polish army issue lavvu (2 ponchos) £18 used (many years ago!)
Heavy at 3kg but I love the security of proper canvas and no having flat sides makes it a good shape for coping with wind.

Sleep gear
British army softie trousers (current issue) £18 used
Royal Navy thermal jacket (current issue) £25 used
Alpaca blanket £60 new
Happy with this setup.

Camera
DJI Action 2 £200 new(ish)
Dreadful! These cameras are in two modules with the intention that the camera half can be detached and used on it's own. In practice, both the battery life and internal storage are so poor when using this way that it's not really practical and so you end up always using both modules together. This it turn means that booting up takes a long time as both modules come on line - when it's finally ready to film, the moment has often passed! On occasion the camera froze on me mid clip and wind cancellation did not work at all. The final straw was something going wrong with the charging. I had it plugged into a power bank all day even when filming, but by the evening the battery was flat. Then despite charging all night only got up to about 4% by the morning. The camera then complained it was too cold and it would shut off it's screens, before powering down completely and refusing to restart.
Were it not for for my deep hatred of littering I'd have lobbed the thing off the nearest cliff.
Lessons learnt: Don't reply on a product that appears half finished. Always carry a back up camera and audio recorder!
