Heat stress in children: what it is and how to prevent it.
Heatstroke and heat exhaustion happen fast for children – and, in the worst-case scenario, can cause organ damage and even death. In this video, we explore:
- Why children develop heat stress more quickly, and severely, than adults.
- The signs of heatstroke and heat exhaustion in children.
- What to do if you suspect a child has heatstroke or heat exhaustion
- How heat stress can be prevented.

On hot days, remember to keep children in shade or indoors as much as possible, watch them carefully for symptoms of heat stress, never cover a stroller with a blanket or muslin, and never, ever leave a child in a parked car.

You can read more about heat stress in children, and how to prevent or treat it, here: https://www.unicef.org/eca/stories/why-heat-exhaustion-and-heat-stroke-happen-fast-children-and-what-do

What actually causes your body to make milk… and how can you increase (or protect) your milk supply?

In this video, we explore the science of breastfeeding – including how milk is made, how feeding patterns influence supply, and why outdated advice like "timing feeds" or sticking to a schedule can seriously disrupt a breastfeeding journey.

You’ll learn:
• How your body gets the message to start making milk (and how to help it!)
• Why breastfeeding works on a “demand, then supply” system
• What makes colostrum so powerful – and perfectly suited for newborns
• Why breasts never actually empty (even when they feel like it)
• The risks of scheduled feeding

Whether you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or supporting someone who is, this video offers clear, evidence-based insight into how breastfeeding really works.

Here at UNICEF, we know that breastfeeding can be challenging. And we believe that, with support, breastfeeding can be possible.

This is why we advocate for governments, societies and systems to provide more support so that women who want to breastfeed, to be able to breastfeed: https://www.unicef.org/eca/press-releases/world-breastfeeding-week-unicef-and-who-call-equal-access-breastfeeding-support

Czechia has taken a significant step forward in strengthening system support for its youngest children by introducing a new framework to monitor the quality and accessibility of early childhood education and care (ECEC).

Fewer than 7 per cent of children under the age of three are enrolled in Czechia’s childcare services, well below the EU average of 37.5 per cent. Up to 40,000 children aged three or four – many of them from disadvantaged backgrounds – do not attend kindergarten.

Childcare services for children in Czechia have almost tripled in recent years, with places increasing from around 10,000 in 2018 to more than 26,000 today, supported by the European Union through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and the European Social Fund+. However, the split governance between the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA) and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS) has complicated the development of a unified monitoring and evaluation framework across the 0–6 age range. To address this, the Czech authorities sought technical support from the European Commission.

More information about the project and its outputs: Developing a comprehensive framework for monitoring | UNICEF Europe and Central Asia

With funding through the EU’s Technical Support Instrument, UNICEF, together with the European Commission, implemented the project “Developing a comprehensive framework for the monitoring and evaluation of early childhood education and care in the Czech Republic to ensure that expanding access is accompanied by improved quality.

Currently, more than 110,600 Ukrainian refugees aged 10-24 reside in Czechia. Refugee adolescents and youth face unique challenges due to disrupted education, trauma associated with displacement and often separation from their families. For many young people, disruptions in their education and skills development now will have lifelong consequences.

Initiated by UNICEF, the CESTY programme provides Ukrainian youth in Czechia with opportunities to access education, develop skills and transition to quality first jobs. In partnership with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Interior, CESTY brings together all relevant stakeholders including government, civil society organizations, the private sector companies, embassies, academia and young people themselves to support refugee youth to stay on the path of continued education, skills building and transition to employment.

Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders in government, in business, and in civil society. Investing in their skills now will pay dividends far into the future as their innovation, leadership and skills will drive post-war reconstruction and recovery of Ukraine.
