In the recent past the European Union has been facing disaffection from a significant proportion of its citizens. The financial crisis, wars around Europe, terrorist attacks and the large-scale arrival of refugees have led to resurgence in national egoism.
Civil society organisations are in a key position between citizens and European institutions, giving them the power to offer new perspectives for the Union and to propose concrete solutions for the future of Europe.
The Civil Society Days 2017 take up this challenge. As a framework, forming part of civil dialogue in line with Article 11 TEU, they are a unique chance for civil society organisations to contribute to this debate, thus bringing new impetus and show its continued support for to the European project.

It's time for civil society to raise its voice.
"The Europe we strive for!" will be organised civil society's call for a new political impulse to relaunch the EU on the basis of our values and roots and also give a clear commitment of civil society organisations to forge ahead.

It will focus on four themes:
• Populism, and how to develop a counter-narrative through education and culture;
• Technological revolution: transforming work, minds and society;
• Empowerment of civil society organisations, rights and the shrinking space for civil society;
• Urban and rural dimensions, moving towards more social and territorial cohesion.

The objective of the Day was twofold: on the one hand, to review the progress made in building an ecosystem for social enterprises and, on the other hand, to see what the next steps are for this enterprise model to be recognized and more widely disseminated. The European Day of Social Economy Enterprises was also an excellent opportunity to give the floor to the actors in the field by bringing together the EESC's institutional partners and a number of sector representatives as well as several stakeholders in order to have a comprehensive view of the situation, create synergies and discuss how to proceed from the creation of an ecosystem to a systemic change at European level.

••••••••••••••
After almost ten years of crisis in Europe, wealth inequalities in the European Union have become a palpable problem and a major destabilising factor for the economy and society. There are substantial divergences between countries, creating ever more dividing lines within the EU. In many European economies accumulated profits are not reinvested: this does not help to produce added value in the real economy, and also leads to labour market disparities and deepens the rich-poor divide in the EU-28. A careful analysis and assessment therefore need to be undertaken of the exact nature of wealth distribution in the EU. This would help to avoid such adverse consequences as the rapid evaporation of the "middle class" and more and more people falling into the category of the "working poor" or being considered at risk of poverty and social exclusion. In this context, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) addressed the issue of wealth inequality in a broad public discussion aiming to gather the main arguments and preventive measures that could be used in a future EU policy in this field. The conclusions of this discussion will feed into an EESC own-initiative opinion on the topic.

"Your Europe, Your Say!" (YEYS) is the annual youth event organised by the European Economic and Social Committee: secondary school pupils from all over Europe are invited to Brussels in order to address recommendations to the European institutions. 33 schools from all EU Member States and 5 candidate countries were selected by random drawing and were visited by Members of the Committee. Then, on 30-31 March 2017, 100 pupils came to Brussels, accompanied by 33 teachers, and drew up recommendations in which they asked the EU to act against food waste, to combat nationalism and to create more attractive and interactive content to inform the citizens about its activities. The three winning proposals were presented by Luke, Matěj, Markos Angelos, Nathan, Bervin and Mitch from Chingford Foundation School (London), Anglicko-české Gymnázium Amazon (Prague), The Grammar School Limassol (Cyprus), and RSG Broklede (Breukelen - The Netherlands).

The European Citizens' Initiative is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year and, although the long-awaited revision of the relevant regulation has not yet found its way into the European Commission's working plan, there are many reasons to celebrate!

The concept of European citizenship has been evolving for 60 years, ever since the Treaty of Rome made history by introducing the right to freedom of movement for workers and services. Over the years, the idea of European citizenship and the rights associated with it have evolved considerably – more freedoms were added, as well as the right to vote directly in European Parliament elections, stakeholder consultations and other tools of participatory democracy, such as the European Citizens' Initiative.

Debate organized the 5th of April 2017 by the NAT section of the European Economic and Social Committee
A European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) has been recently launched to call on European Commission to propose a ban on glyphosate-based herbicides, "exposure to which has been linked to cancer in humans, and has led to ecosystems degradation" according to the ECI organisers. If the ECI receives the support of a million people from at least seven member states, the Commission will be obliged to consider a legislative response and provide justification for its decision.

The EESC debate will be moderated by Mr Brendan BURNS, NAT Section president, with the participation of:
    Ms Franziska ACHTERBERG, EU Food Policy Director – Greenpeace: promoter of the ECI
    Mr Michael FLUEH, Head of Unit of the "Pesticides and biocides" unit - DG Health and Food Safety
    Mr Graeme TAYLOR, Director of Public Affairs - ECPA - the European Crop Protection Association
    Mr Oliver MOORE, Communications Director - ARC2020
    Ms Oana NEAGU, Director - Copa Cogeca
