AfricaRice produces improved rice varieties, sustainable farming practices, policy options and new knowledge that are transforming lives of smallholder farmers in Africa.
Over 2,700 tons of improved seed have been distributed by AfricaRice and its partners to more than 200,000 vulnerable farmers in 27 African countries through Emergency rice projects carried out between 2013 and 2015.
Adoption of New Rice for Africa (NERICA) varieties has lifted about 8 million people out of poverty in 16 African countries and farmers’ incomes in Senegal have increased by about $227 per hectare by using ‘Sahel’ varieties.
Smallholder farmers in 18 African countries have access to nearly 90 high-yielding varieties, including 12 Advanced Rice for Africa (ARICA) varieties that are tolerant to environmental stresses.
In 2016, over 19,000 farmers in Nigeria and Mali received fertilizer recommendations generated by “RiceAdvice” app that can increase rice yield by 20% and profit margin by $200 per hectare.
Farmers in Benin and Togo were able to raise rice yields under rainfed conditions from 1.5-2 tons to 3.5-4.5 tons per hectare using ‘Smart-valleys’ approach.
GEM rice parboiling system is improving the livelihood of more than 2000 rural women in Benin and Nigeria, who were trained in 2015 and 2016 in the efficient use of the technology.
AfricaRice is helping establish innovation platforms within Rice Sector Development Hubs in Africa, to strengthen links among rice value chain actors and identify business opportunities.
AfricaRice promotes small-scale machinery for labor-intensive activities and has trained over 100 artisans in 24 countries to build 270 ‘ASI’ threshers for a turnover of $1,350,000 in 2015 and 2016.
Pioneering research by AfricaRice on experimental auctions and value chain development shows that high quality local rice can outcompete imported rice.
AfricaRice is adopting a new strategy to professionalize the full range of actors along the rice value chain, with a special focus on women and youth.
AfricaRice has developed an integrated research-development business model of the rice value chain to accelerate the achievement of rice self-sufficiency in Africa.
