The NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research is the only federal organization currently dedicated to exploring our unknown ocean. Since 2001, we have been supporting expeditions to explore deep-ocean areas, helping to advance knowledge and understanding needed to help citizens, businesses, and governments make smart choices to protect lives, property, and economic wellbeing.

You don't have to go to outer space to find aliens -- you can find them right here on Earth! Animals in the deep ocean live in to what we consider extreme conditions -- it is cold, devoid of sunlight, and under immense pressure. Yet deep-sea critters have adapted to survive and thrive, resulting in animals that look strange, wonderful, and from another world.

Known as "America's ship for ocean exploration," NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer, in partnership with the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration (OER), travels around the globe to map and characterize largely unknown areas of the ocean for the purpose of discovery and the advancement of knowledge.
