Carl Jung's Individuation Process
In this video, we go through Carl Jung's Individuation Process. We begin by understanding Carl Jung's conception of the dynamics of the psyche, including the Ego, the Persona, and the Self. Once you understand these Jungian concepts it is much easier to understand Jung's idea of the process of individuation.
Carl Jung outlines the process of individuation as 'becoming oneself', 'self-actualization', or 'coming to self-hood'. The specifics of the process of individuation is different for each person, as the individuation process is a unique experience for each individual. However, Carl Jung does outline some universal archetypal experiences that we seem to encounter while journeying through the individuation process.
Carl Jung outlines the process of individuation by showing certain personified figures that we encounter that represent certain aspects of our unconscious psychology. The first of these is often an encounter with our personal unconscious and the personification of everything we have ignored in ourselves as the Shadow.
In talking about the individuation process Carl Jung has referred to the integration of the shadow as the “apprentice-piece” towards becoming whole, while he referred to the integration of the anima or animus as the “master-piece”.
Throughout the individuation process an encounter with the Anima or Animus marks a deeper layer of the collective unconscious where the individual is to face new challenges in developing their personality.
Finally the individual encounters a personification of that greater transpersonal personality that Carl Jung calls the Self. The integration of aspects of the Self is the final stage of Carl Jung's Individuation process where the individual reaches a state of completeness or wholeness in their personality.
What stage of Carl Jung's Individuation process do you think you are at? Have you had any dreams that you think are clear manifestations of the process of individuation?
