This animation briefly explains the use of HDR (high dose rate) brachytherapy. During this form of radiation therapy, sources are placed in or close to the tumor for a specified time (usually a few minutes) and removed again afterwards. The actual duration of the treatment depends on many different factors such as the required intensity of the dose delivery as well as the type, the size and the position of the tumor.
HDR brachytherapy allows radiation oncologists to deliver the radiation quickly, mostly as an outpatient procedure.

Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG manufactures small, radioactive implants, so called seeds, which are mainly used in LDR brachytherapy for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. The seeds take the form of little capsules containing a minuscule quantity of a radioactive isotope, I-125 (Iodine-125). They are implanted into the prostate, where they remain permanently and destroy the cancer cells. Permanent LDR prostate brachytherapy with seeds is highly effective, especially in early stages of prostate cancer and causes relatively low side effects in comparison to alternative treatment options.
