Dr. Clayton Lawrence embarks on an amazing journey to Cape Town, South Africa, where he visits the Khaelitsha Special School. Students at the school are intellectually disabled, some incapable of learning the abilities to read and write. LEAP Foundation DC donated books and pencils to 400 students there. The school’s principal, Mr. Mguda, faces the daily challenge of preparing the students to one day be contributing members of society. Dr. Lawrence is no stranger to paving the way for a healthier, happier lifestyle for disadvantaged youth. As the founder and CEO of LEAP Foundation DC, he upholds the nonprofit’s mission to “build bridges between hope and achievement in the District of Columbia and surrounding communities.” The organization provides educational and training opportunities to meet the aspirations of the underserved and innovative work at the grassroots level and communities around the country. But his work did not stop with the children at the Khaelitsha Special School. While in South Africa, Dr. Lawrence represented the United States in a run to benefit the Neonatal Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, in the Western Cape Province, where he received the Finisher Medal in this South African Marathon. Participating in the marathon represented two of the doctor’s passions. He has served in the medical field as a flight surgeon, family practice doctor and Armed Forces practitioner, and was happy to help support the intensive care unit at the hospital. Dr. Lawrence also is extremely health conscious and completed his 100th marathon this year, before beginning intense training as a natural bodybuilder.
