Our PS 51 students study Tchaikovsky's music and The Nutcracker each December from K-3rd grade. We learn all about form, instrument families, ballet technique, costumes, sets, scenery, tempo, dynamics, and a million other things related to music, dance, and the theater. Then in 3rd grade, our students participate in the NYCB partnership and get to see the Nutcracker Ballet live at Lincoln Center! It is truly an amazing culminating experience for their Tchaikovsky music study.
This year, we decided to put on our own version of The Nutcracker. Our 4th and 5th grade students learned Orff arrangements of several tunes and the younger 1st-3rd grade students learned dances to them. This was the end result. We are so proud of their hard work. This will be an experience to remember.
