Mayo travelled from Vancouver, B.C. to Kalinga, Philippines to meet the legendary Wang-Od.
In this video, Mayo Landicho visits the iconic tattoo artist (WANG-OD) in Kalinga, Philippines. This film is to show Mayo's journey in Kalinga as an inspired tattoo artist living his dream. More about Mayo's Journey down below:
"Mayo Landicho has the heart and soul of a warrior." This statement however bold was validated in 2013 by the last Kalinga Tattoo artist in the world 94 year old traditional tattoo-tapping 'batok elder' Whang-Od. Once a thriving warrior society, the Kalinga village of Buscalan now sits peacefully upon the Cordillera Mountains of northern Luzon, Philippines; a living testimonial to the ways of days gone by. It is this mystical place without any sense of time that first beckoned to Landicho almost two decades earlier in a vision that he would behold nearly twenty years later. Captivated by the enchantment of ancestral and age-old tribal art, Landicho set upon a journey in 2013 back to his homeland and into the dangerous and remote mountains of Luzon in search of Whang-Od. His goal was to learn the ancient skill of tattoo-tapping and to bring back this skill to Vancouver.
After reaching the village of Kalinga, Landicho assumed the role of protege as he spent each moment in the next two days diligently recording and learning the ways of tattoo skin tapping and poking techniques; methods deeply steeped in history and passed down to Whang-Od by her own father. Surrounded by various artworks, stories and village elders, Landicho listened, learned and internalized a deeper and profound understanding of the significance and meanings conferred upon the patterns that were particular to tribal tattooing in that region. Each geometric pattern symbolized specific attributes like for example virility and strength that identified the wearer in this world and into their eventual afterlife. Armed with primitive tools that have not changed over the centuries, Landicho received his own personal tattoo applied to him by Whang-Od and surprisingly was given an even greater honor when the elder placed the instruments in his hands and asked him to practice his new skill on her body. It was a HONOR for Landicho and with great care, he set upon the task with the expected level of reverence. Satisfied with his efforts, the old lady placed her hands on Landicho's head and blessed his right to bring the age-old tradition of hand-tapping to the modern world.
