Transcript of the MOP7 Welcome Message by Dr. Jacques Trouvilliez, Executive Secretary of AEWA:
I am pleased to inform you that the seventh session of the Meeting of the Parties to AEWA will be taking place from 4 to 8 December this year in Durban, South Africa. I would accordingly like to express my deepest thanks to the Government of South Africa for hosting the meeting.
MOP7 is an important milestone in the development of the Agreement because the Parties will be deciding the way ahead for the next decade. AEWA will be adopting a new Strategic Plan and a new Plan of Action for Africa.
The Strategic Plan and the Plan of Action for Africa are two documents that will help AEWA make a considerable contribution to the post-2020 objectives in setting a new course for flyway conservation. It is therefore entirely appropriate that our hosts have chosen “Beyond 2020: shaping flyway conservation for the future” as the slogan of the MOP.
Among the other items on the agenda will be new action plans for endangered species. Such plans have proven to be very efficient when implemented all over the flyway. There will be also a special focus on seabirds and on the concept of climate-resilient flyways.
I hope that many of you will be able to attend MOP7 and contribute to the decisions concerning the future implementation of AEWA. See you in Durban!
