This playlist of songs will be solely used to teach Makaton signing via Sync and Sign method. Usually we sing and sign our own cover versions of songs or produce our own original material, but these songs are single-take videos where we lip sync to some of our favourite tunes!
No copyright infringement is intended, the song has been purchased via iTunes by us and we sing and sign along for educational purposes only to enable families/professionals supporting children and young people with learning disabilities to learn how to implement their signing in creative and engaging ways.
Makaton uses signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is designed to support the development of spoken language.
Makaton is the UK’s leading language programme used by adults and children with learning or communication difficulties and by everyone who shares their lives.
Makaton signs are based on the gestures used in BSL (British Sign Language – the language of the Deaf community). However, unlike BSL, Makaton signs are used in conjunction with speech at all times and in English grammatical word order.
Here is a collection of little clips sent in by families who have come with their babies or toddlers to our classes or whose children sing and sign along to our DVDs at home. We also have clips of little friends from Great Ormond Street Hospital who we sign with each week - if you would like your little one featured in this playlist, please drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org :)
Every Monday, we add a little clip to our FB / Twitter / Instagram showing a sign which we hope you'll try and learn that week. The idea behind #MakatonMonday is to encourage everyone to take a small step towards learning how to sign - even just one sign per week is better than nothing! But the more you can learn the better! The signs here include concepts for play / food / time / colours as well as seasonal signs to help you learn relevant concepts throughout the year. So join us every week to learn something new or practise signs you already know :)
