The euro is the single currency shared by 19 of the European Union's Member States, which together make up the euro area. The introduction of the euro in 1999 was a major step in European integration. It has also been one of its major successes: more than 337.5 million EU citizens in 19 countries now use it as their currency and enjoy its benefits.
Today, around 340 million citizens in 19 countries live in the euro area, and this number will increase as future enlargements of the euro area continue to spread the benefits of the single currency more widely in the European Union.

To many, it sounded like a fairy tale: you take a bit of money, invest it wisely and within three years it will have multiplied 15 times over. Yet, this is exactly what we set out to do with the Investment Plan for Europe – investEU.
With investEU, also known as the Juncker Plan, we promised with the European Investment Bank to trigger €315 billion of additional investment in the EU by mid-2018.Time has passed, hundreds of projects have benefitted from the investEU support which has turned out to be a success, surpassing our initial goal.

We’ve dusted off the EU time machine to go through some of the most memorable moments that have shaped the European Union as we know it today.
For more than 60 years, we have built a Union that promotes peaceful cooperation, respect of human dignity, liberty, democracy, equality and solidarity among European nations and peoples. The founding fathers knew that they were going to change history. They also knew that history lives on through archives. We have preserved more than 60 years of European history to remember the past and build a better future!
