The Queen’s University Rocket Engineering Team (QRET) is a student run design team with the goal of safely designing, building, and testing sounding rockets to compete in the International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) in Green River, Utah. A sounding rocket is a sub-orbital rocket designed to deliver payloads to specific altitudes. QRET is currently run by eight students from Queen’s University. The team participated in the 10th IREC held in June of 2015, presenting the lightest and smallest sounding rocket at the competition due to its unique implementation of composites. The rocket traveled to 12600ft using a solid fuel motor and delivered a 10lb payload that was designed to measure wind gust flow characteristics as it fell back to the surface. Students working on this challenging project gained and will continue to obtain hands on design skills and experience that they are not normally exposed to during their education.
