SEMO Electric Cooperative Electric is a private, not-for-profit business governed by its consumer-members. Two federal requirements for all co-ops, including electric co-ops, are democratic governance and operation at cost. Specifically, every consumer-member can vote to choose local boards that oversee the co-op, and the co-op must, with few exceptions, return to consumer-members revenue above what is needed for operation. Under this structure, electric co-ops provide economic benefits to their local communities rather than distant stockholders. While focusing on member needs, SEMO Electric Cooperative works for the sustainable development of its communities through policies accepted by their members.
SEMO Electric Cooperative is a member-owned cooperative. As such, we promote our members and seek economic development in southeast Missouri. Here are a few member profiles to encourage you to visit, dine and or simply support our area.
Restoring power after widespread outages is a big job that involves more than simply throwing a switch or removing a tree from a line. It involves a huge coordination effort with possibly hundreds of linemen, tree trimmers and office personnel working in very dangerous situations. SEMO Electric's restoration process focuses on restoring service to the greatest number of customers as safely and quickly as possible. As always, public safety takes precedence at all times. Members with medical conditions should make plans for backup power or alternate accommodations in the event of an extended power outage. Those in need of immediate medical assistance should call 911.
