Welcome to my new channel, Shawn James, where I actually speak instead of doing things in relative silence like I do on my other channel, My Self Reliance.
Why am I making a new channel? To give more of myself to you the viewers, and to show you more about my everyday life. If you don't know me from My Self Reliance, here is a brief description.

At last count, the viral time-lapse video of me building a log cabin with hand tools in the Canadian wilderness has been viewed on Facebook over 120 million times around the world and it is still going strong. Why is that? What about this short story is so broadly appealing to a huge number of diverse people, most of whom will never have the opportunity to do what I have done, and most of whom are not so inclined to do so even if given the opportunity.

My initial thought was that it was our proclivity to romanticize the past, or that the simple life seemed so much more rewarding and less stressful than our complex, modern lives. I still believe these things to be true, but more strongly, I believe we are drawn to it because of our desire to break from conformity and dependence, to be individuals, and to be self-reliant.

For the last few years, I have been simplifying my life and relearning traditional skills, applying those skills to build this wilderness homestead. I’m learning as I go, and in the process, and I am becoming stronger, healthier, financially independent, less stressed, happier and more fulfilled.

This lifestyle is new to me, other than treating it like a hobby for most of my life. I did conform, I did embrace modern life and I did find success in the rat race - at least by society’s standard - money, influence, respect, power - but my life lost meaning by my OWN standards. I climbed the corporate ladder only to discover that it has no top, and that the higher I climbed professionally, the lower I sank personally.

Like many of you, I too have felt the overwhelming stress of financial debt, I watch helplessly as family and friends deal with mental and physical illness, and, I as I age, I contemplate my own mortality and my insignificance in the universe. But, rather than let these things overwhelm me, I have adjusted my perspective and have learned to embrace uncertainty, overcome adversity and just be grateful no matter what happens to me. I’ve taken responsibility for my own actions and my own happiness.

I want to share with you what I did to overcome my personal challenges to get where I am in my life now - happy, financially independent and self reliant.

So Why Should You Subscribe To My Channel?

    To relax…

To virtually immerse yourself in nature…

To see how I live debt free, stress free and low cost…

To see how I build things…

To see how I cook with no electricity or gas…

To hear what steps I took to retire in my mid-forties so I could live my dream life…

To interact with the happiest and most helpful community of viewers on YouTube…

    To become more self-reliant

Every Friday, I upload videos of me building my off grid wilderness homestead. Now that the main cabin is almost finished, you can watch me every week as I spend every day out in nature and build an outdoor kitchen, workshop, woodshed, bathhouse and sauna, icehouse, root cellar, smoker and a guest cabin - all out of logs, rough lumber, clay and stone from our property.

Make sure you subscribe and click the notification bell so you don’t miss additional videos posted randomly throughout the week as well. Of course, subscribing is easy and is completely free. On my channels, I show; how I cook without electricity or gas, how I acquire, use and maintain the tools, clothing and gear needed for this lifestyle, how I stay healthy and destress, and how I was able to quit
Probably it’s not asthe rat race to pursue my dream life relentlessly. I talk about life in general, and how this wilderness cabin is not my escape from reality or my hermitage, but rather a base that allows me to live life to the fullest without working a 9 to 5 job and without being a slave to my possessions. What I learn here, and what I show you, is the skills that I use for self reliance in the 21st century that I hope you can use to make your life better, no matter where you live.

Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it and I look forward to seeing you here at the cabin. Take care.
