Orthopedic surgeons specialize in surgical procedures that treat conditions of the musculoskeletal system. Although referred to as “surgeons,” these specialists also perform nonsurgical techniques to treat everything from sports injuries to congenital disorders (such as scoliosis) and degenerative diseases affecting the bones and their surrounding muscle and joints. Orthopedic surgeons treat repetitive motion injuries and rheumatoid arthritis and perform joint-replacement surgery. Some orthopedic surgeons focus on subsets within their profession, specializing in sports medicine, for example, or pediatric orthopedic surgery. Orthopedic surgeons may work at a hospital or in private practice. Patients are typically referred to an orthopedic surgeon by a general practitioner.
