WONDERKID premieres its eagerly anticipated trailer, a short film by Rhys Chapman, which tackles one of football's biggest issues - homophobia. Starring Chris Mason, the film depicts the inner turmoil of a gay professional footballer as he strives to succeed as his true self in a hyper masculine environment.
Stolen glances, slanging matches, passionate kisses, paparazzi, trials and tribulations, torrents of abuse from ‘fans’ - the trailer gives a glimpse into WONDERKID’s life.
After earning a dream move to a London Premier League club, ‘WONDERKID’ should be on top of the world. The reality? He’s faced with callous friends, a hostile changing room, vitriol-filled messages on social media and, crucially, WONDERKID’s having to deal with himself. He’s a young man making sense of his own sexuality in a world which has no history of, or appetite for, supporting gay professional footballers. The trailer highlights the key issue - why should his sexuality be an issue?
WONDERKID is an expressive, vital and powerful activist film. The support that the film has generated is remarkable. Important members of the football community - including Sky Sports’ Martin Tyler, Alan Smith and Geoff Shreeves - watched the film and agreed to feature. They realise the importance of this issue and this film. Having already won the support of Sir Ian McKellen and Stephen Fry, WONDERKID has also earned support from The Telegraph, adidas, Sky Sports, The FA, The Premier League, Watford Football Club, Tottenham Hotspur and Kick It Out.
The film is part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about a lack of openly gay professionals in the sport.
