Ferrofluids are composed of three basic components:
1. Sub-microscopic, magnetically permeable particles of iron oxide, usually magnetite.
2. A surfactant or dispersant coating.
3. A carrier fluid.
Check out our blog post on the History of Ferrofluid for more information on its NASA roots and modern-day applications. Ferrofluid is notorious for staining everything it comes into contact with. A suspension liquid or "SL" prevents the ferrofluid from staining a container along with preserving its ability to spike.
It's important to know that not all ferrofluid displays are created equally. Genuine Concept Zero displays will not stain, leak, or stop spiking in a few weeks like imitation brands. A simple search on Kickstarter and Google will confirm how critical a perfectly tuned SL is when making a product with ferrofluid.
