Gurudongmar Lake situated at an altitude of 17800 feet. It is one of the highest lakes in the world and highest lakes in India. Situated at 190 kms north of Gangtok and 67 kms from Lachen, the lake remains frozen during winter. There is no vegitation and there is less oxygen in the air. China border is just 5 kilometer away from Gurudongmar Lake. You need permit to travel to Gurudongmar Lake. Remember to carry the original photo Identity card when travelling to Gurudongmar Lake or any other detination in North Sikkim.
Remember, to reach Gurudongmar Lake start as early as possible. And try to reach there by 9 a.m. in the morning. After that very strong winds starts blow and weather becomes unpredictable. Thangu is almost half-way between Lachen and Gurudongmar Thangu is at 14000 feet and the last village before the Gurudongmar Lake. We had our breakfast there at Thangu. You should not climb at 18000 feet in empty stomack. After Thangu, the road will gradually take you up to the Tibetan Plateau. You will amazed to see how the landscape changes dramatically. Notice the change in treeline and how it gradually vanished!
