Since its inception in 2004, Summa’s accredited Bariatric Care Center’s weight loss program has helped hundreds of people – just like you – successfully meet their weight loss goals – safely.
Our surgeons have also helped with the treatment of other serious conditions that often accompany obesity, such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
It's been found that as body mass index (BMI) rises, the severity of these diseases also rises. The degree to which these comorbid conditions become life threatening is directly proportional to BMI. The National Institute of Health indicates that bariatric surgery should be considered by patients with a BMI greater than 40 kg/m2 as well as those patients who have a BMI of 35 to 39.9 kg/m2 and medical problems such as diabetes, heart disease or sleep apnea.
With a significant weight loss, many patients have seen a dramatic improvement or have even been cured of these conditions. Following weight loss surgery, Bariatric Care Center patients experienced improvement in these comorbid conditions at five years:
71% have resolution and/or improvement of their type 2 diabetes
81% have resolution of their obstructive sleep apnea
73% of patients have resolution and/or improvement of their hypertension
66% have resolution of their GERD

Is Bariatric Surgery Right For You?
Although there is not yet agreement on a single best approach to non-surgical weight loss management, there is consensus that the most effective and long-lasting treatment for morbid obesity and the many related conditions is surgical weight loss intervention or bariatric surgery. There has been growing evidence to suggest bariatric surgery may be among the most effective treatments for metabolic diseases and conditions, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obstructive sleep apnea.
Summa Health Systems' approach to weight loss management is focused on the individual needs of the patient. While cosmetic improvements are frequently a result of significant weight loss, the goal at our Bariatric Care Center is to help cure the patient's medical problems and improve their health and quality of life. We offer a three-pronged approach to weight loss management: surgical, medical and behavioral medicine.
All patients considering weight loss surgery undergo an extensive evaluation by our multidisciplinary team. Upon completion of the evaluation, the team meets to review the results and makes a recommendation about the treatment options that best fit the needs of each patient. The final decision about whether a patient will have surgery or what type of surgical option is best for that patient is made by one of the Center’s board-certified bariatric surgeons.
Our highly skilled, experienced and compassionate team utilizes the latest technology to perform minimally invasive surgery in order to provide the best possible outcomes for each patient.
A minimally invasive surgical approach offers substantial benefits, including less post-operative pain, a faster recovery time, less bleeding and less scarring.
Your physician may even feel you are a good candidate for minimally invasive robotic surgery, which is performed by a surgeon to conduct the surgery through small incisions in the abdomen. Though called a robot, the machine does not act on its own, but is an extension of the surgeon's hands.

Following your in-depth, personalized evaluation, your care plan will be customized to meet your individual healthcare needs.
