Released as a single by Lowatt in early 2016, “Ruins” upbeat feel -- juxtaposed against its weighty lyrics -- feels like a perfect anthem for these early, hyper-charged moments of 2017 where we need to remain both energized and vigilant.
In an era of “America First” nationalism, this lyric video reminds us of what U.S. manufacturing looked like during the twentieth century, and what the consequences of those manufactured goods were at home and abroad. While we all need jobs to survive, do we really want to be spending forty hours a week building the “ruins of our remains” again?
The critical nature of the lyrics should come as no surprise given that they were penned by songwriter, professor and author Dr. Robert Haworth, who used to play in bands like Farside, State of the Nation, Inside Out and Hard Stance, which shared membership with Rage Against the Machine and Gorilla Biscuits.
Filling up the low end on this track are Dischord affiliates drummer Peter Moffett (Government Issue, Wool, Burning Airlines, J. Robbins) and bassist Jim Kimball (Retisonic, J Majesty). Additional vocals, keyboards, and guitars on “Ruins” were provided by Carin Smith (Old Arrows) and Christopher Woodhead.
