Fifty-nine years after it debuted at Atlanta Ballet, "The Nutcracker" is being re-created for a new generation of fans.
Although the performance has undergone changes throughout its historic run, this is the first time in 20 years a new production of the classical ballet will be staged by Atlanta Ballet.
This innovative production is led by Atlanta Ballet Artistic Director Gennadi Nedvigin, who assembled a team of visionaries for "The Nutcracker" two years ago.
"This was one of the first big decisions I made when I joined Atlanta Ballet as artistic director. It was time for a change and a refreshment. In general, the technology used in theater has gone ahead so far in the last decade, it was time for an update, something that would be more engaging for a new generation," he said. "'Nutcracker' is one of the biggest productions done worldwide, and it has an immense impact on the company, on the dancers and on culture in Atlanta."
Atlanta Ballet's new production of "The Nutcracker" will make its debut Dec. 8 and run 19 performances through Dec. 24 at the Fox Theatre.
"Be prepared to want to come back again, because you won't be able to see everything the first time," Nedvigin said. "It will be interesting and engaging and thrilling for all ages, as 'The Nutcracker' always is."
