hello everyone and welcome it's me jtand we are looking at another systemtoday we're looking at sky osand as you can tell from the color it'sanother late night with jtso i wanted to pull this one upi'm gonna pull up the wikipedia articleandread a little bit about this to youunlike most of the operating systemsthat i coveron here skyos was actually a proprietarysystemso the plan was actually to make a fullcommercial proprietaryoperating system um it was made by arobberchalene i hope i'm saying that correctlyi'll put thethe spelling up above me so you can seehow this how it's spelledbut uh yeah the idea was to create afull commercial operating systemit stopped development in 2009and then in 2013 robert madea public beta of skyos available forpeople to actuallydownload and try up to that point ithink relatively few people had actuallyseen it and played with itso this is kind of one of those you knowit was a dream ofone person to kind of create this thingand to create a commercial offering fromitthere just aren't a lot of successfulcommercial operating systemsso some of that probably played into itit looks like theoriginal price was 30 us to get accessto the betathis is before the public beta release ibelieveit's a unix-like operating system with amonolithic kernel supports multipleusers symmetric multiprocessingit uses a fork of open bfsyes it's the b file system um it canalsowork with fat32 and iso 9660 andthose kind of things really was made toinstallside by side with other operatingsystems or at least work with formatsthat you'd be working with in otheroperating systemsi'm currently booted into a live cdas you can see from the text on thescreen so this live cdi want to see if i can make this fontmaybe a hair bigger buti'll just read out a little bit of thisfor you soskywest is running in live cd modedirectly from the skyos cd-romusing the skyos branch fs technology youhave the possibility to make changesinstall programs and even createdocuments please notethat all modifications will be lost whenyou rebootit goes on to say a little bit moreabout the limitationssorry for my fast scrolling apparentlythe scroll sensitivity is like reallyhighyeah let's see until you have skyosinstalled to a hard drive you have thefollowing limitationsso it has the ability to do indexing andquery just likebfs did uh it looks like someare going to be some applications aregoing to be missing so we'll just kindof keep these in mind so it's not goingto have thecompiler i'm just going to install itfirst so i'm going to install it havethe full installand we'll start from there okayi think we're back so we have gottenourselves a fresh install of sky osso i had booted from the live cd andthen immediately decidedthat if i was gonna miss out on allthese additional applicationsi just wanted to boot into actualsky os so i have installed it to a diskimageand now i'm just i'm just about to jumpinum i did an indexing of the disk imagein case we come across any place where icould do some fine files and that kindof thingobviously i'll kind of watch out forthat i know that that isa feature of the b file system and soif skyos takes you knowand extends from the b file system thenthe indexing is kind of an importantpiece of thatwhen we first boot in we see somefamiliar icons one of course is thefirefoxlogo an older firefox logo butdefinitely recognizable we've gotterminalthe system manager and storage and theseicons lookdefinitely look familiar at least thestorage one doesso let's go ahead and click on thestorage one and see what we seeso here is our skyos file manager itlooks likeyou can see i have the the disk imagethat i installed it from is still onhereas well as the boot partition that iinstalled tooon the left hand side we've got ourdifferent devices and it looks like yepi can expand and see these differentdevicesi have places i'm not sure these arebookmarks per sebut these are you know i can click onhome andsee the home and etc it looks likethey've gottwo one for music and one for video soit comes witha must come with a music player and avideo player i'm sure we'll we'll trythose out here in a seconduh to see what that looks like umwe've got queries and queries would beuh for folks coming from bos this mightbe familiar that you couldcreate a little query that you couldsave offand then rerun that later so becauseof the queryable file system you canmake a query thatlike this one says show all my mp3si can just click here and this will be alive updated queryso if i added additional mp3s they wouldjust automatically show up hereif this works just as the bios versiondidyou can see the query up here at the topwith the tabs so one tabis looking at the admin home directoryit looks likeand then the other tab is looking at thelive query and see queryname equals start at mp3star looks like it's the query that it'srunningpast five minutes things that have beenchanged in the past five minutesso as we click we get these new tabspopping upthat we can then navigate between thisis pretty cool i kind of like thisuh if in the search i did start atmpeg yeah mp3 surehow do i get the the search i wonderor maybe that's only that's like a downselect of this particulargot it of the the actual files in thekind of a file view rather than a queryso if an application data let's say skyosuh i don't know where i'm going to goi'm just trying to find some filesthere's settings okay so we haveup a folder go to home new tabthis is pretty cool i gotta say so farthe ability to kind of create a littleworkspace for myself by creating anothertab and then doing something in that taband then jumping between tabs that'sreally handy i like that a loti'm not sure how to close it okay rightclick and then close the tabso we'll do that for a couple of thesego ahead and closeand we've got a temptemp uh for that particular user so iguessif we're doing internet temporary filesor anything like thatsystem settings so the double clickis sometimes working sometimes not itlooks likelet's try this again star dot pleasetake a look at the notification panelfor additional information do you wantto debug the application view nowno ah it crashed okayall right so we'll start that back upand then we'll get back to where we wereso we were looking inthe places home and theni think we're looking in system settingsi was about to dostar dot xmlyeah i don't know maybe just xmlyeah okay so you write just part of thefilefile path that you want to down selecttoup here and then that's enough to downselectwe've got some xml files some icons if idouble click an icon do i get to viewthe iconcool so i've got little image viewerthat pops up and lets me view the iconi think that's close then xmlplease select the application you wantto use to open this xml fileall right do i have the optionof i don't seean editor i do see an idereally wellcolor me curious all rightokay so we have an ide sources headersit doesn't seem to have opened the filebut that's okayum let's put that so i see atthe top we can jump back to this id herein a secondbut i want to go ahead and finish outlooking at the file manager firstand then we'll pull up the id becausei'm dying to see what kind of stuffit ships with for developers all rightso new tab home up newfolder view as previewsokay so this is going to actually try tolookinside of the um the imageyou know data or the any kind ofmetadata that lets usget a preview of what that particularfile iscool so what do we have here at the topfile new taband view show hidden filescool it's a pretty straightforward stuffum but it does have thatquery system that bos was kind of knownforso very cool very cool it looks like youcan create new queries hereso if i hadn't had an mp3 queryi could just create a new query and thenhave that pop up over herevery straightforward very intuitive ilike thatit's an attractive looking system ihaven't really talked about that yetbut you know it's got like roundedcorners up here at the topum the font looks you know nice andreadablewe'll circle back to some of the otherstuff but because now i know that has anidei i have to look at it i have to look atitso one of the things that i want to doi was looking for an about but i don'tsee an aboutit's okay so on the file side we've gotnew projectopen project close project save projectlet's make a new projectand we'll call this skype projectand sureokay we're now on skype projectwe've got sources we can add a sourcecool hellothat's e it doesn't exist would you liketo create ityeah that sounds goodso now if i start typing okay so it'smore of a we'll see what happens when iactually hit saveum is it doing any it's hard totell if it's doing any syntaxhighlighting on my screeni don't think it isso let's say print fhello worldand hit save oh yeahi see that the um at least thethe string is being highlighted in redso now that i've saved it can i buildand run successful build successfulwell that was cool and then whathappenedum warning no new line at the end of thefile build successfulall right so we are not seeing a pop-upi wonder if umthe particular way that it's set upis that it will build it but to actuallyrun itwould be you know kind of expect it tobe a gui application or something likethatbut it is interesting that you can getintouh things beyond just source and headersthis kind of reminds me a little bit ofsomething like xcode maybesomething in those lines where you haveadditionalartifacts that you can kind of put intoyour projectas part of your application because it'skind of intended to buildi assume build these gui applicationsthat we see in this operating systemapi definitions help oh noicelook at thatso we've got skyos api documentationwe could just go to town if we wanted toso this isit says skyos api is a modern easy touse and powerful c plus plus apiusing the slot signal mechanism likecute i guessskyos allows you to use various methodsfor gui interactionvery cool so what does it look likeegg okaysky gi that must be it'skind of it's graphic side wow look atthis thingwhoa let's let some big ina bunch of different classes this isseriouscan i scroll through here oh i have toclick all rightwow yeah you can see a tiny bit ofartifactingum but it's very i mean it feels verylush in terms of the kind of things thatyou get right out of the gate like lookat all this stuffand some of this is um like pulling ingecko viewi assume to be able to do you knowviewing ofof web pages or web contentwhich reminds me we have firefox i tryto see if i can get thenetwork working we can pull open firefoxand see what that looks likeso yeah this is as far as umas far as actually doing like ide stuffthis is more of a text editor it lookslike up here at the topbut it does have a couple of fun tricksthis is spell checking okay i was i wasthinking for a second it had alike go to definition or something butwe do have a lot of documentation thatships with itit looks like a really rich apium that goes into a lot of detail aboutdifferent functionality andlike directories and gui applicationsand web content and that kind of stuffso that is really cool to seeall right i'm excited what else we gotso that wasso we looked in storage we did kind ofcheat it and look ahead at the idelet's look at our system manager niceanimationso here's uh robert who did thisworked on it for it looked like 11 yearssuffice yeahfrom 96 to 2007and then uh mozillafor the firefox browser and it's undergpl etcum very cool very cooland you can see the the build that i'musing is6947 for i-586and we have all the devicesjust as you kind of expect uh displayso i was kind of playing with thisearlier trying to find the right displayand ithas a bunch of resolutions it supportsall from the vesaand we have looks like mime typescool you can set up applications foryour different mime typesgestures wow this is no jokedraw jester herewhat what the hecki i did just literally draw a cornerand now i can set that up to meansomethingokay my mind just explodedwow reallylet me draw it this waywhat the heckso if i do nicethat is so coolso i can make a like a mouse gesturewith a a very basic box patternand it recognized it and then i canattach a gesture to this what in theworld gotta say first time i'veever seen that i've never seen thatbeforewow so cool okayshall we set up one let's dolaunch terminal so it says gestures canbe executed by drawing the gesture righton the screenwhile pressing the middle mouse buttonoh goodnessmiddle mouse button how do i do thatit workedwowi'm i'm speechless i literally can'tbelieve that that workedwowokay it's really hard to do with thistrackpad but it totally works that isso cooloh my goodness oh my goodness this isone of those when you see it andone of these projects like youimmediately want to likegrab it and take it into your own youknow daily driversystem setup i would love having thatthat's really funand cool we've got localizationtons of languages i'm actually a bitshocked if this is one person how did hegetall of these translations wowoh these are input languages inputlanguages okay okaybut even still that's really coolnice touch we've got so we do havea system uh system network driver thatwe can usegreat glad that's all set up we'll trythat in a secondand then we have different services thisisso sophisticated i mean come onoh my gosh the amount of workdo we want to look like the windowsoh goodness okay let's try some of thesesure why notuh oh is this the other oneokay maybe they don't work in the betathat's finethat's fine i'm just impressedwith what does work that was that wascoolso we did play a little bit with theterminal umpopping it up at least but let's goahead and look at this a little bitlooks like a familiar set of you know lsworks i assume cat is there so we havesome of ourposix stuff let's look at ourapplication dataand while we're at itp.s so there is a ps it looks differentthan i would expectum i was mostly just trying to find whatshell we're using it looks like bash isaw it fly by real quickyeah here we go we're using bashi'm afraid to like cat something i don'tknow how big it iscat profiles i and i yep okayand then the set of commandsare yeah comes with pearl comes withcupsit feels like a full posix system likeif it could be a custom kernel or itcould belike a linux or bsd set of binary toolsthat have been imported i'm not entirelysurebut it does have a giant number oftools and a lot of them seem kind offamiliarso yeah i assume that it's you know it'slike a full bin utils plusextra which is pretty coolokay let's try this firefox out see wegotoh boy yeah it's trying to go toskyos.orgthere's absolutely no way that's goingto work yeah it'sthe domain has already been sold tosomeone else okay let's go to googlereal quickhow's this going so this looks prettygoodwhat version of firefox is this anyonewant to take some guessesif we can't see it here oh there we gothere we go you have to click itfirefox 2 2.0.0.9built for skyos look at that let's goahead and do that google search againthere we go it worksdefinitely an older style of uh gettingthe resultsyou know you don't have the ads andstuff in our mix the same waybut it it works very coolokay so what other applications shippedwith thiswe've got programs development so welooked at the idewe got some examples which is very coolentertainment demos gearsshall we shall we do the gears that isnot the gears i thought it was going tobebut it is gears that's for sure that'svery coolgot um gamesegg chess never even heard of such athingwe have minesweeperwe've got what else we have herecanes scum oh so we could play like davethe tentaclethat's pretty fun skytrass if you wantto play tetrisit comes with a fair amount of stuff umat least fair amount of gamesmedia library oh yeah we were gonna lookat umuh the movie playerokay so we did change the theme it justdoesn't change thecurrent window so this is our new themeoh my i was trying to loada movie oh here it ishere we go there's our movie playerroom so what else do we have here wehave image editingso it comes with blenderwow what version of blender is thistwo four oh that went fast 2.42 acool graba scale nicethat's awesome i mean howhow how how is blenderported likehow much do you have to implement in thesystem to port blenderthat seems like really really advancedirc remote access you can do vncuh in viewi'm not familiar with this okay thatdoesn't seem to be workingokay that's fine web browser okaycool and then office we have pdf andpeoplesoftware store and i've installedbasically everything that i couldthere is additional stores i don't eventell me about this darkness storeyeah at this point any of the sky weststuff that was around is long gonebut uh interesting to see that they hadintentionto have multiple people be able to sellsoftware for skyos at one pointum very neat storage viewer we've lookedatskypad that's just a text editorthis is a test of the texteditor all rightokay no double click but we can clickand dragand get some basic text editingsyntax highlighting okay coolso that text widget that they're usingfor the ide seems to bewhat it's using as welland then we have utilitiesbox does anyone remember that x86emulatoruh bash and a whole bunch of stuff acalculator wellyep this is required by lawtimes it goes to floatingby default interestingthat's the first time i've seen thatand thencharm app disk manager event vieweryeah what events have we hadlet's look at thistalking about all the services that cameup like spell checking vmware toolsi'm i'm sorry my brain's exploding bythe amount of stuff this thing supportslike how how howi didn't mean to sound incredulous butthat's
