or2020 is that some people haveheard the long-standing initiative ofrpmos to voice.orgthat's still being worked on we'vereceived about20 to 30 rpm packages from the communitywe've been testing them some of them arenot working so we're firstdoing some good quality assurance andstandardizing themwith basic naming conventionsuh formatting the the file namescorrectlyand also making certain thatdependencies are working correctlyso the other thing that of whichthe uh the cog wheels have been inmotion for some timevoice will be funding the first roundof development of a new object rex portfor os2with shell integration will be doneby glasson fromi'm not certain i think he's yes he'sfrom russiaand he's already done a lot of the echosoftwaresoftware development such as file there will be a demonstration day ofthe newbrowser engine umand uh it has progressed very far i canuse it here i can visit now for thefirst timein about one and a half years i canlocal to pages like clear over theyears is thatum the few applications that you can buyin their webshop provide them theirsponsorshipis far from just that it's it's agigantic task in mayof this year they had already updated160[Music]libraries and software all of the dllsyou're currently using on your systemlikesaba firefox thunderbirds cupsit all leans on libsy etcso umi can say that mostly everything besidesthe operating system itself and itsdrivers is made bya bit wise i i can't believe that wayevery other bit of softwareout there especially a new release ofcurrent versions are made by usof course there are some older proprogramslike from the 90s or somethingwhich still are usable to some degreebut everything newcomes from bitwise it's just so thateverybodywould understand the amount of work wehave do because there's no other partiessupporting osu in all theselibraries like xml librarieslike ffmpeg libraries like the[Music]development tools like the compiler thegc compilerand the vc library libsyand all other tools uh the whole toolchainis just not there in terms of os2and no one cares about those twothere is not a single developer outthere besides usand people who help usjust a couple of other developers sobasicallyeverything besides the drivers and theoperating system itself is made by usit's really a lot of stuff i'll i'llmove to the next slideum one of the things that we also try toemphasize is thati think from an outsider somebody thatstarts tocompile for mostly linux code on os2in most cases the compile system is youcould saybroken with that dimitri i think wouldagreewhat that means is that in a lot ofcases libraries are missing they're notcurrentor make files etc everything in somecases needsmanual tweaking to get it compilingwhich is all a verytime consuming effort uh since nobodyelse is maintaining this stuffexcept a few other people like paulsmedleyum and co from south koreaand uh albert paul but uh or greg youngbut there are very few people that aredoing the bulk of the work sojust to demonstrate and to explainwhy it takes so long sometimesto have a new release of some new pieceof software it's because of thatit's because of there are only a fewpeople onlylike two or three uhdevelopers working on this or thatlibrary or project and they can bereally hugeand this is why it takes uh so much timeokay okay we'll go to next in moreeffectiveuh it was already decided about two orthree years agothat firefox development had to besuspended it was tootiming it too time intensive and it gavetoo littleuh return bitwise works picked upand started working on qd5 which is partto alsoport the web dll which is basically thenewengine that translates incoming webpagesin a website that can be displayed onyour screenfor that that has been a journey withitselfum it required a new version of the gccompiler to beuh brought out uh paul smith had alreadycreated the version but from what iunderstood that required some morepatches to befine-tuned uh get thatinto work uh you had to do updates tolipsey for uh whitespace characters ithink they'reyeah yeah this was one of the thingsthatwere required by the new qtversion and that were missing uhfrom gc for years so and from libsyfor years so i had to uh make themavailable inlibsy first and then gcc could also makeuse of itso yeah it was a long journey to getcurrent version which is suitable forforfor building qd5and that wa and there was more than justuh white character support there were alot of stuffuh other stuff that was also missing soit wasokay uh what was the last version ofopen office that was released was that417 or is there now a new version outuh i actually i don't remember the lastversion we did uhsilver would know better about thatuh i barely touched this project becausei have a lot of other stuff so i'm notsure butmaybe there was one or two newerversionsi've i've gone for to the next slide soyou've already started working on onyour own lip cuh fork umthat has required also extensive updatesto not only accommodate the browser butalso fix other thingsuh so i'll i've been doing uhlissy fixes here and there or almostconstantly and and everyone cancheck that by looking at our githubcommit blog in the library projecton jig hub website uh so yeahlipsy is what our version of lips isquite oldwell its development just got stuck whenuh knut awesome stan also stoppedactively supporting it so it was likea few years behind of uh of thecurrent uh current current stream so ihad toall these glitches here and thereto again to make it usable for uhfor the current versions of all thesoftware out thereincluding qt5 including all other portsincludingopenoffice itself because it needsa newer gcc compiler as welland the newer gcc compiler needs a newerellipsey library and so onsorry can you guys still hear me yeahbut something is wrong with your screenoh sorry wait sorry pardon therei think that's better yeah okayum the whole qt project has also learnedas one valuable thing as a community andthat'sjust like with openoffice you need tokeep theport current if you start falling behindyou need more timecomplicated to have a new version rightumthe whole qt engine the release of thathasmore or less according to the originaltime frame that waspresented by voice and bitwise works andthere are the reason there are twocomponentsbasically there's qt and to put itsimple that provideswidow elements like a menu apm window in which you have the browserdisplaying dataand then there's the web engine and thatis a huge dealthe current compiled version is 250megabytesit's huge and that has recently beenfinished let me switch over to the umthe qt web engine umhow long does it currently take you tocompile thewebkit bll dimitri uh the wholedll takessomething about 14 to 15 hoursto get it compiled yeah it's a debugversionrelease version is a little bit uhfaster like12 hours maybe or something like thatbut it's still quite a bit of timeand uh because of that if i changesomething in some poorlibrary like libsy for instance orlike gcc uh some gc headers it uhis almost a complete revealed of thewholewhole bunch of source files needed forchromium and that'shours and hours of compiling and itexplainsalso why it takes so long to moveforward with thatokay uma lot of other libraries also have to beupdated likeffmpeg used to display theum that is used to display sorryto display video streams yes yesuh recently recently you told merecently you told me you had to modifycx again because the webkit enginewas expecting memory management to workin a specific way that the os2 kerneldoes not provideexactly exactly uh chromium usesuh shared memory quite a lotand we didn't have an apialways two didn't have an api ellipse hedidn't have an api thatsuits the chromium requirementsuh regarding memory managementso i basically had to introduce a newapifor shared memory uh thatsatisfies all the requirements andused in chromium once i did thatwe got a working version of ityeah so it was quite an important stepwithout thatwe would be not able to make it work atalland it took like a month or maybe threeweeks tohave it done including testing andother stuff the second slidewe've already displayed last year butthe bottom line is thatit's it's it's always an uphill struggletoport software to os2 umbecause we are not a supported platformin any projectslike linux mac os or windows andthis is not something that's real that'sreally new in thatretrospect i mean basically for last 10years we've already been facing that butjust like with the gcc compiler thecurrent version that wethat was up until recently in therepository on that labswas version 4.9 i think was it notuh yes yes and that's about six yearsold andwe we get to see as the community thaton some placesour tool chain to compile softwaresimply running behind andthat's something that has made thedevelopment of this new browser take awhole lot more timebecause we've simply done stuff that wasnever done beforeum rightum i also can tell that theuh the falc browser we've decidedto drop that for now or maybepermanentlyand switch to your browser uhwhat dmitry found out is that portingthephone browser will require to port a kdelibrary from linux to osu and what wasyour estimate how long that would takeit wouldn't probably need a couple ofmonths or something like that and it's awild guess without looking under thehood soit's a it's quite a big piece a bigpiece of software called kdeframework which they did tosupport all other kde software so it'squite a big and basicbut something like two months andwithout any obvious benefitfor other projects because uhit's not widely used besides the kdworld we don't belong that worksworld so i don't think it makes sense tospend thesetwo months in our limited resourcesto port kd framework so this is whyi think it's portingfalcon is not a good idea especiallygiven that we havequite a nice author browser as areplacementwhat i'd like to say again clearly on o2world i've seenseveral people discuss what browser toputi think dmitry would agree with me thatat this moment in timepeople should understandthat with whole webkit browser theconcept of a browser itself should bedecoupled from the rendering engine whati mean with thatis that effectively there aredifferent qt web browsers and withfirefoxyou only get the rendering engine frommozillabut with the webkitengine is the rendering engine of cutethe qtdll set that does the work in thebackground in other wordsit's not the browser that really mattersthat for it it's truecertain things like keyboard shortcutsand certain add-ons those thingsmight be are are for a lot of peoplesomething that they would like to haveour viewpoint as bitwise works in os 2voice isthat as time will progress and there area lot of people already experiencing itthe primary argument for us is we wantto have a browser that can displaypage on os2 the add-ons are very nice tohave and for some peopleare requirements but the firefox valuesare 45will start to run into more and moretrouble and i keep getting reports fromother people as well that is simplybecoming more and more difficult todisplayuh certain webpages from my experiencethe chromium engine is much more is muchbetter than chromium engine on os2 andit'salready quite noticeable i would sayeven when i use this test browser onover to this test chromium browserusing uh ut uhand the chrome imaginguh it's it it behaves muchbetter than firefoxit's it's smoother it's faster ithas a better rendering quality and itdoes not look upthe pm uh which is also very importantit really feels lighter and fasterfeels lighter and faster in myin my opinion at least even this testversion and as i mentioned it's reallynotimportant which browser we choosebecause uhwhich ut browser which is because everyone of them will usethe chrome engine anyway and pages willbe renderedby the chromium engine anyway sothe browser is in this regard is just awrapper around this engine it's just ahigh level ui like the menus theshortcuts etc soall the hard work done by chromium andit'sjavascript engine uh looks much betterthanfirefox one it looks it works justbetter andlighter and fasterand in case people missed it uhi've seen different results but to behonesta couple of years ago when you wouldcall for example your bank and say thatyou were usingfirefox uh they would say ohwell it's not working oh sorry we'll fixitbut the market share of firefox has beendropping like a bricki've seen some estimates that that's nowdown to five percent soi don't hope it's going to happen butthere is a chance that firefox willsimplydisappear off help deskuh lists of being a supported browserthe current uh qt the currentwebkit engine that's used in thechromium browserand our upcoming qt browser is also usedby microsoft edgebasically os2 now has arendering engine that is simply industrycompliantand has a market share of roughly 85of browser usage so now the other reasonthatthis proves that this isn't a renderingengine and no longer juststick stuck to the browserdimitri and i have looked very brieflyat the telegramprogram telegram is ais a what app replacementwhich is much more privacy privacyconsciousthan whatsapp owned by facebookandit's also one of the few ummessenging apps that's completely opensourceall of the libraries and dlls can becompiled on os2with the current version of the webkitdll and the qtengine we should be able with the hellof him rule to actually get webcam andaudio support to work on os2now when this could be done or when thisis finished but i think dmitry that youwould agree with me that this is afeasibility that might workgetting webkit if weput a video and audio polls aside it'sdefinitely a work of a couple of monthsto have telegramtelegram on os2 it's not a problem atall given that we haveqt and given that thetelegram desktop desktop versionis written in qt basically and if youuse telegramfor desktop on windows you areusing a qt version of it if you useuh no mac store versionof telegram on macos you arealso using the qt version of it so andyou will basically have exactly the sameexperience on os2uh once we build it once we have itbuiltand it's not there is no atechnical issue that would prevent usfrom doing so we just need a couple ofmonths touh have it done heythere was one thing i'd like to say topeople that said that it couldn't bedonei'm not here to say that i want to provepeople wrongbut what i do want to statewith a lot of passion and commitmentis that i think the osu community canachieve a whole lot moreif a specific goal is set and once thethe goal is set that we stopwasting time on revolving doordiscussions becauseif it wasn't for us to voice therewouldn't have not beenanother browser for os2 and we wouldhave been stuck with firefox 45in different four discussions peoplesaid well what it bit wise worksquits realistically speaking it's 2020who would have toldyou five years ago that we would berunningarca os in the near future very likelyon uefi equipmenti'm not trying to be blunt or or rudeor disrespectful to anybody but what i'mtrying to say is thati think it could be considered a miracleand a pet on the shoulder of thecommunitythat we persevered and that we arepushing the platform forwarddespite being 30 years old i think it'scertainly a round of applause thatpeople in the community that contributeto the browserdid so and that we and we will bedemonstrating it very briefly so you canactually see it for yourselfin fact we hope to be releasing thebrowser in the next couple of weeksto the general public so that everybodycan test it for themselvesso like i thought this is a word ofencouragementyes it's true you can debate if acertain directionis the right way but i think as acommunity wewe spend so much time discussing stuffbutat a certain moment you should just putthe shovel in the groundand get going and we've done that withthe browser and as you'll seeit is working a lot better um i willflip the portion of thegcc libsy factory from this slidesbecause we've basically alreadydiscussed that yeahwe've mentioned quite a lot about thatalready so no need to repeat all thatthe the bottom line is is that there isa lot of work that goes intothe umthere is a lot of work which is not seenby the general public i would put itthis wayum i think dimitri would would recognizethat um os2 void or basically methat i've been pushing locomotive behindto get keeping the funding goingfor getting the bowser on trackright and uhlast in last year's warp star we'vealready kind of madeum a statement thatnew browser would basically go behindsome sort of apay wall now we very much understandthat umpeople expect software that's opensource to be ported free of charge andthe binaries be available umi've recently together with erin schwentdone some researchand basically the browser funding hasbeen funded more or lessby between 50 and 70 loyal donatorsthat have been donating the vast chunkof the moneyto get this project done anda lot of people are that's theirthat's their rights we don't want totake that away from thembut we recently analyzed the apacheweblogs of rpmnetlabs.organd we've seen that in the month ofaugust duringsummer break there were about five to600unique ip addresses of people using arcnoaa package manager to download updatesthat's a pretty stark contrast to howmany people are donatingso yesthat needs to change and as i've alwayssaid free software doesn't grow on treesuh we've already made quite clearfrom our point of view that portingsoftware to os2 is not a matter ofdownloading the sourcesand clicking run or making compile itneedsmoney for thatit's not yet set in stone let me firstof all saythe people that have providedsponsorship to theuh browser these people will not beforgottenand they will get access when newscheme will be put up and you aresomehow missed outplease either contact me from voice orsomebody at bitwiseworksand we will instantly give you accessdepending on how much you donated wewill probably provide you one year ormorefree of charge within the next couple of yearsyeah yeah of course no doubt about thatso the people that would thendonated or would buy access for thiswould getaccess to a password-protectedrepository and in therewould be the versions of binarieswithout the browser without thefixed home page in it and possibly wewoulddelay updates of the browser tonon-paying people with a couple ofmonthsthat will most likely not happen in theinitial period as we first need to getto a browser that's really uh productionreadyand i think we're getting very close tothat actually you can see with theupcoming demo in a couple of minutesso but yeah we feel thatum this is the only way to encouragepeople to um toum to support the projectand we think that there are many moreoe2 users out there becausethose five to 600 ip addresses that wasin asummer vacation in august anda lot of people also don't use arc noahpackage managerso um we think that there was a wholebunch of other people thatwould uh hopefully be endorsed tosondrateif people think that bitwise works issomething that makes yourich sylvan and herb put a lot of unpaidhoursand sylvan regularly providessponsorship himselfbetween two to 500 euros a publicdemonstration of the new browserum i don't even knowit's not the browser itself it's a testapplication from qtit's it's a demonstration of the qt webengine of the chromium web engine thisisthe right way to put it that's right yesthank youum there are a couple of things that arenot working yetsound is not working but we already havea required library for thatwe've already been testing it with someother web pages like youtubecnn.com the dutch public news websitenos.nl and they are all loadingand you can actually hit the play buttonon the videoitem and it will start play however dueto somethingnot working in the um in the browser orthe webkit engine the video only paysfortwo to three seconds and stopsactually plays further but very veryvery slowlylike for one second in half a minuteor something like that it just goes onvery slowly something with theuh with the time frame or withhandling the time of the video stream ithink it's something in chromium andwilleventually fix that of course uhright now it's one of the fewlimitationsthe other thing before i give ademonstration i really need to warnpeople fordo not run on the pentium for cpuyou are free to do so but i think meetrywillemphasize that this new web browser isvery resource hungry yeah well any newbrowser is very resource hungry becauseuh website creators have a lot of jazzscripts a lot of other things like in gmailalready nowwell for some reason it's not when i gotodocs.google.com i instantly get a pagethat that i've got aninsecure browser for whatever reasoni have no idea why because for me itworkedby the way uh well there is a reason whyslack complains and by google docscomplaints iguess because uh currently we have aqt 5.13it's a little bit outdated and it usesuh chromium version which is deprecatedbygoogle and they are checking for thechromium version andsee that it's quite old it's like twoyearsalready or something like that which isconsidered very olduh from their perspective and this iswhy they complainand once we update qt to qt5.15 we will get a recent version ofchromium and thisproblem will will have gone okayand it will not take a lot of time todo that because there is there are noany significant changes in there it'sbasically justa matter of compiling everythingwe will also do it in the next in theupcoming weeks as well sothis is what i think is the problem herewiththe slack and with the with googledocumentsbut you can try gmail instead it workswell i think it's going to have the sameproblem then i assume becauseas soon as i want to log in with withwith more and morepeople that need to reboot to anotheroperating systemor to perform other tricks to access awebpageand that for us was always the primarygoal here was to get a browser that canat leastdisplay a page on the platform and thenthe other things for us to be veryhonest withwere a secondary thing if you need toboot up your windows or linux box orgrab your mobileto uh watch a websitewhat is the use of an add-on that worksin firefox 45yeah exactly and by the way as far asrememberthe author browser hasan ad blogger built in so it's not aplugin it's apart of the browser which gives a lot ofbenefits in terms of performance anduh functionality i didn't godeep in in that topic but it's uhit's at least there and it's not uhit's as good as the popular ad blockerplugging on chrome orfirefox so we have that there andthere might be other thingsbuilt in like some password manager orsomething like that there is a lot offeaturesin that browser withdone as native extensions tothe browser itself not as plugins butthere is also a way to supportthe chrome web extensions whichare basically pluginsfor for modern browsers which everymodern browser supports right now andthis we will have someat some point there is in the uhmessage uh roadmap from the authordeveloper which states that this supportwill be added soon and of course as soonasit's down there we will get it for freeso yeah lewis also posted that sowhat we're trying to bring the messageacross is thatwe feel that this was the best effortthat we could do to bring osu backon a current browser and withoutif people want to choose using firefox45 but i think that the writing is onthe wall that amount of pagesdepending on what you access will startto decrease its functionality especiallywebsites of banks
