hello everybody and welcome back toanother video now in today's episodewe're going to be taking a look at morphOS which is a pretty interesting andunique operating system because itserves a very niche market in the modernday this is an OS that is still activelymaintained and developed that's designedfor certain power PC based machines andits roots lie in Amiga OS in factmorphos is considered to be an Amiga OSlike operating system and Amiga OS iskind of a whole nother can of worms thatwould probably be safe to go down in aseparate video but what you need to knowis that morph OS was originally designedfor certain Amiga computers that had anaccelerator card installed whichcontained a power PC processor now whenyou think of powerpc there's a goodchance you think of Max because Appleused the architecture in their machinesbeginning in the 1990s and Lasting untilthe Intel transition in the mid-2000s soyou probably won't find it surprisingthat morphos was eventually made to beinstalled on powerpc Mac as well in factout of the 11 computers listed asofficially compatible with morphos onthe website seven of them are Max andwe've got one of those computers righthere of course it's my power Mac G4 Cubethat I actually last powered on in 2021when we installed Ubuntu Linux on thisthing so we are going to pop in themorphos installation disk right hereand we're just gonna reboot the systemand begin the installation process andyes we are going to overwrite theexisting Ubuntu install and just do aclean install of morph OS and see whatit has to offer this is actually goingto be my first time taking a look atthis I have not explored this off cameraso this is going to be a new experiencefor me as well but from what I've lookedat this operating system looks uh prettycool because it's kind of its own thingin fact the OS states that this is amostly proprietary operating systemthough it does have a few open sourcecomponents but it is a commercialoperating system this is not free you dohave to pay for it I believe a licensecosts around 79 Euros however there is afree 30-minute trial period that you canutilize and it's actually how you haveto install the OS and there we go themonitor is lying to us it says it cannotdisplay this video mode but it isdisplaying the video uh but so that'skind of funny but uh yeah oh it'sdefinitely on a super high resolutionsolution here that's why it's oh my goshthis is quite yeah this is because ofthe capture card that I've got the VGAsignal split between that and themonitor here so uh yeah we definitelyneed to change that somehow can we gookay is there a way to change theresolution like without going throughthe setup and waiting for it to installOkay English American key map okayactually I believe this is a live CD soyeah we can just hit browse CD here andyeah these are the contents of the CD sowe should be able to gouh if I can find where the settings arethat would be super nice oh heresettings system okay here we go here wego screensum we want to edit this there we gothat's a lot better oh my gosh I canactually like see what's on the screeneverything was so tiny before but yeahso you know if you just want to like tryout more for us a little bit and get afeel for what it is you could just kindof explore it here but we're of coursegoing to go through with theinstallation although now I've closedout of the I've closed out of theinstaller so let's we gotta find wherethat is this is off to a wonderful startisn't it geez you would think they wouldhave like a big install icon on thedesktop or just not let you close out ofthe installer because I literally don'tlike where do we have to go applicationsmaybe uhum no no no no no no where is thefreaking installer at tools there it isinstaller that's not the same thingmaybe I wizard is this it like I forinstall nope that's not it WB startup isit first flight there it is there it isokay all right so let's go to thisinstallation oh okay this is okay so itwas eyewizard this is I just closed outof it because it wasn't that initialwindow that we got so it is eyewizard inthere okay great I always realized youto pre-configure various system settingsset up Network accesses partition disksblah blah blahum if you were running morph OS like aprior version you could go with theupdate option down here of course that'sgrayed out for us because we don't haveone so we're gonna go new installationus English that's fine okay so we couldhave just gone through the wizard and itwould give us the option to change ouruh resolution and display settings aswell so we didn't really have to do anyof that that I just went through andthen made everything more complicatedokay uh yes date and time that's correctand you'll go the American key map Mousespeed we'll we'll leave it kind of atthe default oh we got some different uhoptions here I do like this red one yeahwe're gonna go with that though thatlooks to be the default anyways so allright next I do have an ethernet cableplugged into this thing so it'srecognizing that here which is greatwe're just gonna go with the automaticoption because it does recommend that ifyou're installing it for the first timewhich I am one thing of note is there'sno progress bar or any sort ofindication as to like how long it'sgoing to take or where it's at in thecopying process it does have a thingdown here of how many files that it'scopied over and how many kilobytes worthof files that it's copied over but youknow it doesn't tell you the total so wedon't know exactly uh what that's goingto be and would you look at that it didnot take long at all like not even aminute or two went by uh since my lastspoke to you guys so yeah we'll say okayand I guess we just gotta restart sowe'll uh we'll close out of this we'lleject the CD and we'll just go to let'ssee how how do we restart shutdownreboot there we go so there's the bootscreen pretty simple nice looking italso has oh no it reset the resolutionagain oh my gosh what on Earth is itdoing now look at this it's like theentire screen like put up into a corneroh geez okay so let's go to utilitiesum let's go to or no settings system andwe'll have to modify this again okaythat's a lot better so here we are hereis morphos in all of its glory and likeI said I have not used this before I'venot explored this before this is kind ofone of those videos where I just wantedto go into it blindly just to kind ofexperience this uh for the first timeone thing that is rather interesting andkind of odd is the way this menu barworks up here so you have to right clickclick to get these options and then youget kind of like you have in you knowMac OS where you've got like the menubar and all the options up there so it'snot up here permanently but like this isnot a button that you can click this isnot either you have to right click andthen yeah then it you know you can gohere or my morph OS there's a littlefile browser we were just in we can gointo system and maybe browse the uh thefile structure a little bit here we'vegot a readme file which is probablygoing to be important to read and tellsyou the supported graphics cards othersupported cards booting how to you knowmake sure it boots properly installationprocess how to upgrade how to reportbugs you got a quick FAQ here and itdoes come with a decent amount ofprograms like you saw earlier when wewere booting off the live CD there's alot of tools in here we go back intoutilities we've got a bunch of stuff inhere uh let's open up maybe the theclock here this is like a little bit ofa widget that just appears on thedesktop you can kind of drag it aroundwhatever they the active application itwill show up here so ambient screen isthe name of the overarching GUI it'sactually just referred to as Ambiencebut yeah when I click on the clock hereyou see that it changes to clock 52.0 Iguess this is the 52nd iteration of theclock application let's go to aboutmorph OS kind of read the about infohere so this is version 3.17 the latestversion as of me filming this video andthat's the other thing too about morphosis this is a way if you have an oldPower PC Mac that for whatever reasonyou need to use in the modern day thisis an operating system that could dothat for you it might be worth payingthe 79 Euros or whatever it is if youyou know have an actual use for it yeahwhat I was saying earlier about youhaving to download this demo version toeven register it there's no registrationthing on the website you have todownload the ISO file for morphos whichI know I've been saying that this is ademo version but this is regular morphosthis is the Full Experience there'snothing like the that won't run oranything it's just that there is a Timelimitation kind of a built-in time bombthat when you use it for I believe 30minutes with it being unregistered itwill come up with a message that saysyou have to register it to continueusing it and you do that by goingthrough the registration utility hereand you click on next and it says righthere software is initially time limitedup to two hours per boot okay so maybeit's two hours I thought it was 30minutesum but yeah so he says You must registerand this is kind of the the downside anda very important thing to note when youpurchase morphos it will create a uniquekey file that is bound to thisparticular machine that I've got itinstalled on so you can't just transferit to another computer and the way itworks is you would fill out yourregistration form here it would ask youfor your email address and then it wouldsend you an email I believe with aPayPal link where you would pay for thelicense and then it generates that keyfile and ties it to this specificcomputer so that is something to keep inmind if you do end up purchasing morefor us but you can try it out for freefor that 30 minute or maybe two hourperiod as it says here up to well itsays up to two hours per boot uh maybeless depending on version okay but let'sgo ahead and just kind of explore aroundthis a little bit we'll see what uh whatprograms we have we'll go to the mymorph OS icon here on the desktop andlet's go into system and there is a webbrowser that's included in here I forgetthe exact name but I think it's it mightbe under utilities here oh it's probablyunder applications I think Iris I thinkthis is the mail client yeah I can tellfrom the from the AD Sign there so thereis an email client I believe it's wayfairer this is it this is the browser sowe'll open this up here we get that samekind of splash screen which we stillhave for the email client here uh in thein the background so uh let's hope oneof these starts up oh there we go okaythe browser oh it's probably like doingsome first setup type stuff here lookslike it's got a ttf a few ttf files it'sloading up or copying somewhere okay andthat's something that I'm figuring outhere you have to double click on awindow when you want it to become thewindow that's on top so like if I clickonce on this it will make it the activewindow you see the title bar changeshere but I have to double click on it tobring it to the very front I guess whileit's doing that let's maybe browse thedrive a little bit more let's see whatelse we got so we'll go to the systemhere let's go back to those applicationsyeah you've got a VNC server you've gotlooks like a PDF program vpdf yeah so alittle PDF reader you've got uh you havesome VNC stuff LCD monitor test remoteshell Iris which is the mail client thatwe're loading up there's a benchmarkutility or disk speed and gfx speed aswell and I gotta say this file browseris pretty nice the way it gives you youknow your like directory breakdown hereyou can easily jump back to the roots ofyou know just my morphos but it doesn'tget rid of the path that you were justin so like I can go back to gfx speedit's only when I go to a different ohand there's the email client it finallystarted up look at that so yeah thisthing this is like a modern email clientI mean because this whole OS is stillmaintained and developed to this day sooh there's actually it looks like thatthere's an update to uh Iris we'll justskip it for now so yeah you could signin with Google uh you know right fromyour from your Gmail account so it lookslike you don't have to configure likemailbox settings and all that I'm surealthough I'm sure you could if youwanted to at least I would hope uh ohand here's Wayfarer okay so Wayfarer 4.8is now available it looks like thenetwork is working it's loading themorphos page let's go ahead and downloadthis new version I wonder how updatesare handled it looks like it made thisfull screen uh we can kind of restorethat thereand maybe resize a little bit let's getout of the mail client but yeah back towhat I was saying with the file browserit's nice because it shows you yourentire file path until you change like Iwas just in gfx speed if I go into diskspeed then this will change with this uhlayer or this tier of the directory thatwe're in uh so like same thing if I'm inapplications and I go back up the systemand I go to classes that will now changethat is really really nice you've alsogot some buttons up here for forward andback you've got what I believe is likean info thing and I guess they callfolders drawers because that's what yeahDoc's drawer and applications draweryeah so I guess that's what they'rereferring to folders as and somethingelse that I'm noticing is you cannotdrag Windows like off the screen it iscontained to the screen which couldhonestly get kind of annoying if you'rerunning a little bit of a lowerresolution you want to just like movethis window out of the way and you knowhave something else kind of like overlapon top of it but you can just resize thewindow and then be able to move itaround and we'll go ahead and make it Ithink this is yeah this is making itfull screen and it does take over themenu bar as well completely justoverlaps it so let's go ahead and uhlet's try to go to YouTube on here nowwatching YouTube videos we'll go to mymy YouTube channel watching YouTubevideos on here is going to be limited bythe hardware itself oh yeah the browserhas kind of Frozen up here lovely lovelylovely lovely oh there we go we got thesearch bar but yeah I mean to be honestlike watching YouTube videos issomething you're probably not going tobe doing on morphos but what I did readis that apparently you can use thebuilt-in media player and just likestream YouTube videos directly to it andthe playback is much better of course itdoes depend on what Hardware like youknow everything would be much better onlike a G5 like a power Mac G5 as opposedto a G4 Cube here oh it finallyresponded to me clicking the back buttonearlier let's go to maybe Google let'sgo to a bit of an easier website hereso there's Google oh so it does okay soit's not like a I I wonder what thisbrowser is based on okay it is a webkitbased browser uh copyright2020-2022. in fact it's kind ofreminding me of the Safari logo perhapsthat's why they uh went with it but youcan see here like this is not the modernGoogle home page well it doesn't displaythe mobile results page so that'ssomething let's try to go to my Twitteroh it's doing something it's definitelyslow but it's it's chugging alongmaybe it'll get there let's see oh therewe go so it does look like it has loadedthe mobile page and by loading I meanalmost loaded it's definitely laggingalong here but it did technicallydisplay the page I actually wonder whatthe if we go to the I think there islike a system monitor here where we canview the current CPU and memory load Ikind of wonder what this is looking likehere let's uh let's resize this windowoh yeah the CPU load is like super highthere oh yeah it spikes up immediatelyso yeah the CPU is definitely havingsome trouble here memory usage is prettygood though we're hovering around 20there bscp load is like maxing out uh soyeah maybe you don't really want tobrowse the web uh and go to Modernwebsites on this thing I mean there'splenty of other operating systems andcomputers that you can do that on you'regoing to have a much better experiencebut I I just like to you know kind ofjust mess around with stuff honestly andjust kind of experiment with things seewhat works and what doesn't uh oh andlook at that Wayfarer crashed as we weretrying to close it all right we'll justignore that for now but oh yeah so anice little system monitor uh utilityhere we'll maybe resize that a littlebit and have it down here at the bottomlet's actually look at the games sowe've got diamonds which I wonder ifit's going to be like Bejeweled orsomething oh we got to beat AlbertEinstein's high score all right so I'mI'm sure we've all played games likethis before but actually I wonder whatif we um we open this up here and we goto about let's see puzzle with lots ofshiny gems and so there's the developersof itit's got a bunch of translations as wellgot a few other games here pixel cross Iwonder what this is it opens up in a toosmall of a window warning this gamemight be addictive all right we'll startthe tutorial welcome to pixel cross thetour mode the following Pages we'lldemonstrate how to play this game blahblah use next to continue okaysmall thinking game is a combination ofa crossword puzzle without words andSudoku using pictures instead of numbersthe main task is to uncover pixelGraphics without makeup oh and there'sthe timeout look at that right as wewere getting into pixel cross sotechnically we can still use this systemit says it will slow down soon and itdoes mention I was kind of wondering uhabout if it would reset when you rebootthe system it does mention that
