december this is a special</text><text start="12.719" dur="4.801">month where youtubers get together and</text><text start="14.96" dur="5.2">make videos about everything dos</text><text start="17.52" dur="4.8">and today i&amp;#39;m going to show you a video</text><text start="20.16" dur="4.64">that i&amp;#39;ve had in the works or at least</text><text start="22.32" dur="4">in thought for over a year</text><text start="24.8" dur="3.6">we&amp;#39;re going to have a look at</text><text start="26.32" dur="4.959">performance comparison and other</text><text start="28.4" dur="5.04">comparisons between different dos</text><text start="31.279" dur="4.241">networking methods</text><text start="33.44" dur="5.439">today we&amp;#39;re going to look at seven</text><text start="35.52" dur="7.199">different configurations to see which is</text><text start="38.879" dur="6.321">king among dos networking components</text><text start="42.719" dur="4.401">so a couple of disclaimers the</text><text start="45.2" dur="4">performance numbers that you see today</text><text start="47.12" dur="4.72">are from my experience and may not</text><text start="49.2" dur="4.48">represent the results you get but anyway</text><text start="51.84" dur="3.28">i want to share them with you</text><text start="53.68" dur="4">first we&amp;#39;re going to look at the</text><text start="55.12" dur="4.8">contenders then we&amp;#39;re going to look at</text><text start="57.68" dur="4.64">the different criteria associated with</text><text start="59.92" dur="4.559">the contenders and finally we&amp;#39;re going</text><text start="62.32" dur="4.24">to look at performance a bit</text><text start="64.479" dur="4.161">from there i&amp;#39;ll give you my conclusions</text><text start="66.56" dur="6.16">and we&amp;#39;ll wrap things up so without</text><text start="68.64" dur="5.28">further ado let&amp;#39;s go</text><text start="72.72" dur="3.12">[Music]</text><text start="73.92" dur="4.48">so looking at the contenders there&amp;#39;s</text><text start="75.84" dur="4.56">really five different categories that i</text><text start="78.4" dur="3.2">want to explore today</text><text start="80.4" dur="2.64">first we&amp;#39;re going to have a look at</text><text start="81.6" dur="3.24">lantastic</text><text start="83.04" dur="4.56">then we&amp;#39;re going to have a look at novel</text><text start="84.84" dur="4.36">netware also going to look at novell</text><text start="87.6" dur="2.64">personal network</text><text start="89.2" dur="3.84">and then we&amp;#39;re going to look at</text><text start="90.24" dur="6.16">microsoft smb based clients</text><text start="93.04" dur="6">and finally an nfs based client</text><text start="96.4" dur="4.719">so to ensure there&amp;#39;s no disparity</text><text start="99.04" dur="4.56">i&amp;#39;ve actually selected a couple of novel</text><text start="101.119" dur="5.521">servers to connect to for the novell</text><text start="103.6" dur="5.76">netware netx client i&amp;#39;m calling it we&amp;#39;re</text><text start="106.64" dur="4.4">going to be using an nt 4.0 server</text><text start="109.36" dur="4.48">running the file and print sharing</text><text start="111.04" dur="7.039">services for netware and also to a plain</text><text start="113.84" dur="7.04">vanilla novel 3.12 server</text><text start="118.079" dur="4.4">as for the microsoft smb clients we&amp;#39;re</text><text start="120.88" dur="3.919">going to be using the microsoft</text><text start="122.479" dur="5.201">networking client which i call microsoft</text><text start="124.799" dur="4.401">client as well as using microsoft land</text><text start="127.68" dur="3.12">manager</text><text start="129.2" dur="3.92">we&amp;#39;re going to look at a variety of</text><text start="130.8" dur="5.519">categories for each of the clients</text><text start="133.12" dur="6.24">including the minimum processor required</text><text start="136.319" dur="4.64">the amount of resident memory required</text><text start="139.36" dur="4.64">and this varies</text><text start="140.959" dur="5.92">to keep things as compact as possible</text><text start="144" dur="5.52">we won&amp;#39;t be enabling any sort of file or</text><text start="146.879" dur="4.561">print sharing from our clients</text><text start="149.52" dur="3.92">also we&amp;#39;ll look at free conventional</text><text start="151.44" dur="4.56">memory on my system</text><text start="153.44" dur="4.56">of course this will vary for you we&amp;#39;re</text><text start="156" dur="3.28">also going to look at read speed and</text><text start="158" dur="3.68">write speed</text><text start="159.28" dur="4.4">for about 70 megabytes worth of data</text><text start="161.68" dur="3.52">which will consist of programs and</text><text start="163.68" dur="3.68">installers</text><text start="165.2" dur="4.16">and this will be the least scientific</text><text start="167.36" dur="3.36">portion of the exercise</text><text start="169.36" dur="3.599">since well</text><text start="170.72" dur="4.4">many conditions can vary that result in</text><text start="172.959" dur="4.961">a quicker or a slower read or write</text><text start="175.12" dur="5.28">speed in the real world we&amp;#39;ll also grade</text><text start="177.92" dur="5.679">each client on ease of setup</text><text start="180.4" dur="5.44">as well as pop-up message support</text><text start="183.599" dur="4.081">and then finally i wanted to conduct an</text><text start="185.84" dur="3.759">experiment to see</text><text start="187.68" dur="3.919">how hard it would be to share a jet</text><text start="189.599" dur="4.161">direct printer for each of the</text><text start="191.599" dur="4.481">implementations it was something i was</text><text start="193.76" dur="5.119">curious about so i&amp;#39;ll show you the</text><text start="196.08" dur="4.64">method that i used for each one of these</text><text start="198.879" dur="3.841">client installations</text><text start="200.72" dur="5.12">for ease of setup and switching between</text><text start="202.72" dur="4.48">clients i did create this dos 6.22</text><text start="205.84" dur="3.52">startup menu</text><text start="207.2" dur="4.24">we will be using options 1 through 6</text><text start="209.36" dur="4.64">today as we do our testing</text><text start="211.44" dur="6.2">and we will be using option two novell</text><text start="214" dur="5.28">client for two of the tests</text><text start="217.64" dur="4.599">[Music]</text><text start="219.28" dur="5.28">our first contender is lantastic</text><text start="222.239" dur="5.041">and the setup process for this is really</text><text start="224.56" dur="5.679">nice and easy basically we put in a</text><text start="227.28" dur="4.64">computer name we say go install here</text><text start="230.239" dur="3.841">we can choose whether or not to share</text><text start="231.92" dur="4">our personal resources which i won&amp;#39;t do</text><text start="234.08" dur="4.64">to conserve memory</text><text start="235.92" dur="4.72">and then from there we can set up our</text><text start="238.72" dur="4.32">network card and i&amp;#39;m using an endis</text><text start="240.64" dur="4.48">driver for my 3com card</text><text start="243.04" dur="3.52">and that&amp;#39;s pretty much it i can also</text><text start="245.12" dur="2.56">choose if i want to set up permanent</text><text start="246.56" dur="3.28">connections</text><text start="247.68" dur="4.479">click ok and before long we go through</text><text start="249.84" dur="4.56">the disk process and we&amp;#39;re all set up</text><text start="252.159" dur="4.241">here we are at first boot and we&amp;#39;ll see</text><text start="254.4" dur="3.6">just how long it takes to boot up or</text><text start="256.4" dur="2.959">rather how short</text><text start="258" dur="3.12">so it does take a minute there with the</text><text start="259.359" dur="2.72">redirector but that&amp;#39;s it now we&amp;#39;re all</text><text start="261.12" dur="3.04">set</text><text start="262.079" dur="3.68">from there i launched the net utility so</text><text start="264.16" dur="4.56">we can map some drives and connect to</text><text start="265.759" dur="5.921">the server it asks us to set the time</text><text start="268.72" dur="3.759">i mapped drive d to the lantastic drive</text><text start="271.68" dur="2.959">c</text><text start="272.479" dur="3.28">and then i mapped drive e to lantastic</text><text start="274.639" dur="2.641">drive d</text><text start="275.759" dur="4">pretty easy to do</text><text start="277.28" dur="5.44">printers are also a cinch to map there</text><text start="279.759" dur="4.88">you see it nice and easy</text><text start="282.72" dur="4.56">looking at free memory we will see that</text><text start="284.639" dur="5.441">lantastic is a lightweight weighing in</text><text start="287.28" dur="5.84">at about 65 kilobytes of memory we do</text><text start="290.08" dur="5.119">have about 570 free of conventional i</text><text start="293.12" dur="4.4">wouldn&amp;#39;t mind having a little bit more</text><text start="295.199" dur="3.761">and maybe there&amp;#39;s ways to optimize it</text><text start="297.52" dur="4.08">there should be more things that load</text><text start="298.96" dur="4.4">high in my opinion but again not too bad</text><text start="301.6" dur="3.439">for a networking engine</text><text start="303.36" dur="2.88">next we can look at message sending</text><text start="305.039" dur="3.201">abilities</text><text start="306.24" dur="5.28">i&amp;#39;m launching lantastic server on my</text><text start="308.24" dur="5.2">windows 95 system which is the server</text><text start="311.52" dur="4.16">from there we can click send pop-up as</text><text start="313.44" dur="4.16">you see there put in the server name and</text><text start="315.68" dur="4.16">then put in a brief message</text><text start="317.6" dur="4.879">and before long after we hit send it</text><text start="319.84" dur="4.639">will be delivered nice and simple and a</text><text start="322.479" dur="5.621">nice little interface and i like the</text><text start="324.479" dur="5.521">output too on the client very cool</text><text start="328.1" dur="3.659">[Music]</text><text start="330" dur="4.56">as for printing i&amp;#39;m using harvard</text><text start="331.759" dur="4.961">graphics 3.0 and this very nice little</text><text start="334.56" dur="3.68">chart that i drew which isn&amp;#39;t really</text><text start="336.72" dur="2.88">representative of what we&amp;#39;re doing but</text><text start="338.24" dur="3.2">shows a couple of different networking</text><text start="339.6" dur="3.52">methods i figured it would be good to</text><text start="341.44" dur="3.36">print out a graphic to get a feel for</text><text start="343.12" dur="3.44">how long it takes to print</text><text start="344.8" dur="3.6">and i was also going to benchmark this</text><text start="346.56" dur="4.4">but i found that every program took</text><text start="348.4" dur="4.639">about 20 to 30 seconds to print out from</text><text start="350.96" dur="4.64">start to finish and that was largely</text><text start="353.039" dur="4.641">dependent upon spool time so we&amp;#39;ll leave</text><text start="355.6" dur="4.56">it be and say that it&amp;#39;s a pretty</text><text start="357.68" dur="3.6">consistent and common printing time for</text><text start="360.16" dur="2.7">each of the different networking</text><text start="361.28" dur="9.38">implementations</text><text start="362.86" dur="7.8">[Music]</text><text start="373.52" dur="2.959">next we&amp;#39;re going to look at the novell</text><text start="375.039" dur="3.121">netx client</text><text start="376.479" dur="3.361">and you can see me setting this up in my</text><text start="378.16" dur="3.12">autoexec.bat</text><text start="379.84" dur="4.799">loading all of the necessary</text><text start="381.28" dur="4.96">applications high to make netx work</text><text start="384.639" dur="3.761">from there we have started up and we can</text><text start="386.24" dur="4.32">go ahead and log into supervisor startup</text><text start="388.4" dur="3.76">is super fast for a novell</text><text start="390.56" dur="4.72">looking at the memory footprint it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="392.16" dur="5.2">about 86 kilobytes which is not too bad</text><text start="395.28" dur="4.4">and a fair amount does load high</text><text start="397.36" dur="4.72">giving us about 580 kilobytes of free</text><text start="399.68" dur="4.799">conventional memory which is great</text><text start="402.08" dur="4.239">for pop-up messages we&amp;#39;re going to use</text><text start="404.479" dur="4.16">the file and printer services for</text><text start="406.319" dur="4.32">netware control panel item</text><text start="408.639" dur="3.84">so i&amp;#39;ll go ahead and launch that</text><text start="410.639" dur="2.721">and then click on users at the bottom</text><text start="412.479" dur="2.801">left</text><text start="413.36" dur="4.239">and from there the supervisor user is</text><text start="415.28" dur="4.319">selected we&amp;#39;ll hit send message</text><text start="417.599" dur="4.081">and i can also change this to send to</text><text start="419.599" dur="2.961">everybody connected to the server why</text><text start="421.68" dur="2.16">not</text><text start="422.56" dur="3.039">from there we can type our little</text><text start="423.84" dur="4.4">message that we want to send</text><text start="425.599" dur="4.401">click on ok and then ok again</text><text start="428.24" dur="4.32">and we will see the message appear on</text><text start="430" dur="3.759">the bottom of the screen on the right</text><text start="432.56" dur="3.28">the client</text><text start="433.759" dur="4.16">very cool</text><text start="435.84" dur="3.84">next up we&amp;#39;ll look at netx connected to</text><text start="437.919" dur="4.961">a 3.12 server</text><text start="439.68" dur="4.88">and yes it does start up that fast</text><text start="442.88" dur="4.08">i&amp;#39;ll go ahead and get logged in here as</text><text start="444.56" dur="3.84">supervisor so we can proceed</text><text start="446.96" dur="3.359">so the first thing i&amp;#39;m going to do is</text><text start="448.4" dur="4.16">look at the memory footprint just to</text><text start="450.319" dur="6.081">prove that it&amp;#39;s the same for both the nt</text><text start="452.56" dur="6.32">4.0 and network 3.12 servers very cool</text><text start="456.4" dur="4.48">everything is the same</text><text start="458.88" dur="3.84">for pop-up support we can go to the</text><text start="460.88" dur="4.4">network console and use the broadcast</text><text start="462.72" dur="4.56">command you&amp;#39;ll notice something notice</text><text start="465.28" dur="3.68">how i use mixed case but on the right</text><text start="467.28" dur="4.08">everything comes out uppercase</text><text start="468.96" dur="4.639">interesting as for printing we can use</text><text start="471.36" dur="4.559">the capture program by using this syntax</text><text start="473.599" dur="5.681">here and we&amp;#39;re actually going to attach</text><text start="475.919" dur="5.361">to a printer on the nt server shared out</text><text start="479.28" dur="3.68">as a netware print queue</text><text start="481.28" dur="2.96">so that capture command there will do</text><text start="482.96" dur="3.519">that for us</text><text start="484.24" dur="4.48">and we can log in as supervisor since we</text><text start="486.479" dur="4.4">do need to log into that server and we</text><text start="488.72" dur="3.84">can also look at the p console command</text><text start="490.879" dur="3.76">and change over to that server and look</text><text start="492.56" dur="4.079">around a little bit if we look at print</text><text start="494.639" dur="4.56">queue information we can see there are</text><text start="496.639" dur="4.801">no jobs in the queue we can also see</text><text start="499.199" dur="6">that a server is attached to this print</text><text start="501.44" dur="6.8">queue pretty cool if you do ask me</text><text start="505.199" dur="5.601">next up is novell personal netware and i</text><text start="508.24" dur="4.159">love the setup program lots of options</text><text start="510.8" dur="3.359">easy to use</text><text start="512.399" dur="4.161">of course the more options you use the</text><text start="514.159" dur="3.68">more memory you use but it&amp;#39;s nice and</text><text start="516.56" dur="3.76">configurable</text><text start="517.839" dur="4.801">so here we are on first boot of novell</text><text start="520.32" dur="4">personal network and we get to run this</text><text start="522.64" dur="4.4">first time setup where we can either</text><text start="524.32" dur="4.48">choose to join an existing work group or</text><text start="527.04" dur="3.2">create one we will be joining an</text><text start="528.8" dur="3.36">existing one</text><text start="530.24" dur="4.24">and with that this part of the setup</text><text start="532.16" dur="5.52">will then continue creating an account</text><text start="534.48" dur="5.12">on that particular netware pure server</text><text start="537.68" dur="5.12">and with that we&amp;#39;re all set and we&amp;#39;re</text><text start="539.6" dur="4.799">logged in and ready to go nice and easy</text><text start="542.8" dur="3.44">i&amp;#39;ll go ahead and do another reboot so</text><text start="544.399" dur="4">you can see what that looks like</text><text start="546.24" dur="4">and on boot we will be prompted for a</text><text start="548.399" dur="2.56">username which we can go ahead and put</text><text start="550.24" dur="4.64">in</text><text start="550.959" dur="5.921">and a password as well if necessary</text><text start="554.88" dur="4.56">looking at the memory footprint it is an</text><text start="556.88" dur="5.519">impressively low 81k</text><text start="559.44" dur="3.959">and look how most things are loaded high</text><text start="562.399" dur="4.241">we have</text><text start="563.399" dur="5.481">621k a free conventional and very little</text><text start="566.64" dur="5.52">of that is personal network</text><text start="568.88" dur="5.2">the user interface is also outstanding</text><text start="572.16" dur="5.28">here you can see me mapping a drive to</text><text start="574.08" dur="5.52">drive f it&amp;#39;s super easy to use personal</text><text start="577.44" dur="3.76">network got it right</text><text start="579.6" dur="3.359">next up i&amp;#39;ll demonstrate sending a</text><text start="581.2" dur="4.24">message and it&amp;#39;s as easy as saying</text><text start="582.959" dur="4.641">netsend from the personal network server</text><text start="585.44" dur="4.64">on the left and before long we get our</text><text start="587.6" dur="3.919">message on the right nice and easy i</text><text start="590.08" dur="4.08">love it</text><text start="591.519" dur="5.841">as for printers we are going to map to</text><text start="594.16" dur="5.119">the printer on the nt 4.0 server so i do</text><text start="597.36" dur="4.8">need to enable the ability to connect to</text><text start="599.279" dur="4.961">bindery based novell servers</text><text start="602.16" dur="4.239">after that we do also have to specify in</text><text start="604.24" dur="3.68">the net tool if we want to see it i&amp;#39;m</text><text start="606.399" dur="2.641">not sure why that&amp;#39;s not default but</text><text start="607.92" dur="3.12">that&amp;#39;s fine</text><text start="609.04" dur="4.16">from there we can put in a username and</text><text start="611.04" dur="3.84">press enter for the password</text><text start="613.2" dur="3.84">and we can then go ahead and find our</text><text start="614.88" dur="4.56">printer that it lives on that other</text><text start="617.04" dur="5.6">server and i&amp;#39;ll go ahead and map it to</text><text start="619.44" dur="4.48">lpt1 and from there we&amp;#39;ll be all set</text><text start="622.64" dur="4.08">nice and easy</text><text start="623.92" dur="4.56">so next up we have microsoft lan manager</text><text start="626.72" dur="2.64">you can see me running the setup program</text><text start="628.48" dur="2.88">here</text><text start="629.36" dur="4.719">we will install the enhanced version of</text><text start="631.36" dur="4.8">lan manager and from there we can select</text><text start="634.079" dur="3.281">our network card driver as you see me</text><text start="636.16" dur="3.28">doing here</text><text start="637.36" dur="4.479">get that all installed and then i&amp;#39;m</text><text start="639.44" dur="4.16">going to also choose all protocols here</text><text start="641.839" dur="2.881">though i really shouldn&amp;#39;t more on that</text><text start="643.6" dur="3.6">later</text><text start="644.72" dur="4.559">moving along we can put in a subnet mask</text><text start="647.2" dur="4.879">a default gateway or other settings we</text><text start="649.279" dur="5.68">want to put in and move forward give a</text><text start="652.079" dur="4.241">computer name a username and a domain or</text><text start="654.959" dur="3.841">workgroup name</text><text start="656.32" dur="4.8">and also enable messaging support but</text><text start="658.8" dur="3.279">not windows support though we could if</text><text start="661.12" dur="3.2">we wanted</text><text start="662.079" dur="3.841">i also let land manager maximize memory</text><text start="664.32" dur="2.72">though i&amp;#39;m not sure what that does more</text><text start="665.92" dur="3.76">on that</text><text start="667.04" dur="4.799">so here we are doing first boot of lan</text><text start="669.68" dur="3.12">manager and you are going to notice</text><text start="671.839" dur="2.801">something</text><text start="672.8" dur="4.08">it is very</text><text start="674.64" dur="5.56">very slow</text><text start="676.88" dur="6">the tcpip initialization part takes</text><text start="680.2" dur="4.68">forever but as the saying goes good</text><text start="682.88" dur="3.92">things come to those who wait</text><text start="684.88" dur="4.639">we put on our password and we get to</text><text start="686.8" dur="4.96">wait some more as some browser discovery</text><text start="689.519" dur="3.76">is done i believe or at least i think</text><text start="691.76" dur="4.079">that&amp;#39;s what&amp;#39;s happening</text><text start="693.279" dur="4.641">looking for a server to log into</text><text start="695.839" dur="4.881">and sometime later it will say</text><text start="697.92" dur="4.72">nothing found but you can move on</text><text start="700.72" dur="4.239">so we would like to</text><text start="702.64" dur="6.16">looking at memory usage this uses a</text><text start="704.959" dur="7.44">whopping 319 kilobytes of memory</text><text start="708.8" dur="6.64">holy smokes we have 402 kilobytes of</text><text start="712.399" dur="5.44">free conventional memory that&amp;#39;s it this</text><text start="715.44" dur="4.56">thing is a hog lan manager does come</text><text start="717.839" dur="3.921">with a nice little user interface</text><text start="720" dur="3.36">it&amp;#39;s a touch clunky</text><text start="721.76" dur="3.36">we can go ahead and connect to some</text><text start="723.36" dur="4.24">drives and servers i&amp;#39;ll demonstrate</text><text start="725.12" dur="5.04">connecting to the lantastic server which</text><text start="727.6" dur="4.479">is also set up to be an smb server we</text><text start="730.16" dur="3.76">can go ahead and map a drive we can map</text><text start="732.079" dur="4.161">a printer and although it&amp;#39;s not the</text><text start="733.92" dur="4">easiest it does get the job done</text><text start="736.24" dur="3.76">and we&amp;#39;re able to map things i</text><text start="737.92" dur="3.68">personally prefer the command line but</text><text start="740" dur="3.36">this is certainly an option if you want</text><text start="741.6" dur="3.76">to use it</text><text start="743.36" dur="3.76">so as far as sending messages i will be</text><text start="745.36" dur="3.52">sending a message from win pop-up in</text><text start="747.12" dur="4.24">windows 95</text><text start="748.88" dur="4.639">however for the performance portion of</text><text start="751.36" dur="5.2">this video that you will see later we</text><text start="753.519" dur="6.161">actually use the nt 4.0 server to be the</text><text start="756.56" dur="5.76">file server for our smb clients nice</text><text start="759.68" dur="3.92">message on the right nice dialog box</text><text start="762.32" dur="3.12">very cool</text><text start="763.6" dur="3.28">for printing i went ahead and remapped</text><text start="765.44" dur="3.76">the printer since i did actually do a</text><text start="766.88" dur="3.759">reboot between the time that i initially</text><text start="769.2" dur="3.199">set this up</text><text start="770.639" dur="4.32">and i thought i&amp;#39;d go ahead and run</text><text start="772.399" dur="4.481">harvard graphics and here we go and look</text><text start="774.959" dur="2.961">at that program too big to fit into</text><text start="776.88" dur="2.959">memory</text><text start="777.92" dur="4.96">so i went ahead and commented out the</text><text start="779.839" dur="5.281">msdlc and netbui protocols and went</text><text start="782.88" dur="4.399">ahead and rebooted</text><text start="785.12" dur="6.159">with this our memory footprint is now</text><text start="787.279" dur="5.761">down to 243 kilobytes from 319</text><text start="791.279" dur="4">so we did save some memory and we have</text><text start="793.04" dur="4.64">more conventional memory available now</text><text start="795.279" dur="5.281">and are able to print accordingly</text><text start="797.68" dur="4.88">next up is microsoft network client</text><text start="800.56" dur="3.68">and we can set our username as well as</text><text start="802.56" dur="4.64">configure various options so that we</text><text start="804.24" dur="4.96">have just the tcpip protocol sometimes</text><text start="807.2" dur="3.92">we learn from our past mistakes</text><text start="809.2" dur="3.52">and that will minimize the memory usage</text><text start="811.12" dur="2.399">of course i set up my network card as</text><text start="812.72" dur="2.559">well</text><text start="813.519" dur="3.76">the setup is a little bit clunky for</text><text start="815.279" dur="3.601">this but it gets the job done you just</text><text memory</text><text start="833.44" dur="5.36">footprint for this we can see that it</text><text start="835.44" dur="5.519">will use about 124 kilobytes of memory</text><text start="838.8" dur="6.159">and looking at free conventional we can</text><text start="840.959" dur="6">see that we have 452 kilobytes not great</text><text start="844.959" dur="4.081">ms client does have this nice little</text><text start="846.959" dur="3.12">graphical utility for mapping drives and</text><text start="849.04" dur="3.68">printers</text><text start="850.079" dur="4.56">i like the simplicity of it pretty cool</text><text start="852.72" dur="3.679">you can certainly use it again i do</text><text start="854.639" dur="2.721">prefer the command line but it is nice</text><text start="856.399" dur="2.88">to use</text><text start="857.36" dur="4.4">next we have xfs</text><text start="859.279" dur="3.441">and xfs is a little bit more complex to</text><text start="861.76" dur="2.8">set up</text><text start="862.72" dur="3.119">there is this host file that you have to</text><text start="864.56" dur="4.32">modify</text><text start="865.839" dur="5.281">the opportunity to hand edit files can</text><text start="868.88" dur="4.319">result in errors and there&amp;#39;s no real</text><text start="871.12" dur="3.839">graphical way to set things up so that</text><text start="873.199" dur="2.801">makes difficulty a little bit higher for</text><text start="874.959" dur="2.801">this</text><text start="876" dur="4">and from there there&amp;#39;s this init file</text><text start="877.76" dur="4">that we also have to set up again</text><text start="880" dur="3.92">a little bit cumbersome but if you</text><text start="881.76" dur="4.319">understand it you will be able to do it</text><text start="883.92" dur="3.84">and i do have a tutorial on this</text><text start="886.079" dur="4.88">i&amp;#39;m also setting up a mount for a</text><text start="887.76" dur="5.199">printer and a file system as well</text><text start="890.959" dur="4.801">and from there we need to change the xfs</text><text start="892.959" dur="4.641">bat to load the right packet driver and</text><text start="895.76" dur="3.36">from there also add last drive z to</text><text start="897.6" dur="3.84">config sys</text><text start="899.12" dur="5.12">that said startup is lightning fast as</text><text start="901.44" dur="5.36">you see here which is pretty awesome</text><text start="904.24" dur="5.44">the memory footprint also isn&amp;#39;t bad with</text><text start="906.8" dur="5.039">68k of resident memory i just wish more</text><text start="909.68" dur="4.719">would load high so i would have more</text><text start="911.839" dur="4.081">free conventional memory than the 563k</text><text start="914.399" dur="3.361">we have</text><text start="915.92" dur="3.76">as far as looking at things there is an</text><text start="917.76" dur="4">xfs tool show which will show you the</text><text start="919.68" dur="4.56">connections you have and there&amp;#39;s the</text><text start="921.76" dur="3.28">ability to also map things using the xfs</text><text start="924.24" dur="2.48">tool</text><text start="925.04" dur="4.4">not nice and graphical but it gets the</text><text start="926.72" dur="4.4">job done so here we have a comparison of</text><text start="929.44" dur="3.519">the different clients</text><text start="931.12" dur="3.12">and as promised i told you i would tell</text><text start="932.959" dur="3.12">you what the minimum processor</text><text start="934.24" dur="4.24">requirement is</text><text start="936.079" dur="3.601">for all clients but personal netware and</text><text start="938.48" dur="5.279">xfs</text><text start="939.68" dur="6.399">this system will run on an 8088 now</text><text start="943.759" dur="5.2">if you have an 8088 system where you can</text><text start="946.079" dur="6">upgrade to a v20 you are in luck</text><text start="948.959" dur="5.601">personal netware and xfs will run on a</text><text start="952.079" dur="4.721">v20 processor and i do run these on my</text><text start="954.56" dur="4.32">tandy1000hx</text><text start="956.8" dur="4.479">as for resident memory</text><text start="958.88" dur="5.759">we can see that lan manager and ms</text><text start="961.279" dur="5.521">client are indeed hogs now</text><text start="964.639" dur="4.56">if we were to enable file sharing on the</text><text start="966.8" dur="3.36">local system for lantastic or personal</text><text start="969.199" dur="3.601">network</text><text start="970.16" dur="5.28">the memory usage would also go up</text><text start="972.8" dur="4.8">and as noted for personal network we</text><text start="975.44" dur="3.6">increased the memory usage so that we</text><text start="977.6" dur="4.88">could indeed</text><text start="979.04" dur="5.52">print to a binary based server so</text><text start="982.48" dur="4.479">there are ways to increase the memory</text><text start="984.56" dur="4.399">footprint if you&amp;#39;re not careful</text><text start="986.959" dur="4.401">that said i am very impressed by</text><text start="988.959" dur="4.401">lantastic and by xfs when it comes to</text><text start="991.36" dur="3.599">memory usage</text><text start="993.36" dur="3.599">looking at free conventional memory</text><text start="994.959" dur="3.761">which again is just a measure on my</text><text start="996.959" dur="2.721">system and will vary from system to</text><text start="998.72" dur="3.119">system</text><text start="999.68" dur="3.599">i am extremely impressed with personal</text><text start="1001.839" dur="4.081">network</text><text start="1003.279" dur="4.401">as far as ease of setup most of these</text><text start="1005.92" dur="2.88">are pretty easy to set up with the right</text><text start="1007.68" dur="3.12">tutorial</text><text start="1008.8" dur="4.479">there is some hand editing</text><text start="1010.8" dur="4.8">xfs was the most cumbersome but not</text><text start="1013.279" dur="4.721">terrible and we do have procedures on</text><text start="1015.6" dur="3.599">setting up all of these so with that it</text><text start="1018" dur="3.6">is possible</text><text start="1019.199" dur="5.6">we can see that the majority of clients</text><text start="1021.6" dur="4.88">also support pop-up except for ms client</text><text start="1024.799" dur="3.28">and xfs</text><text start="1026.48" dur="4.64">and as far as sharing printers are</text><text start="1028.079" dur="5.6">concerned there is a way to do it though</text><text start="1031.12" dur="3.439">i will say i spent the most amount of</text><text start="1033.679" dur="2.801">time</text><text start="1034.559" dur="5.36">trying to figure out how to either share</text><text start="1036.48" dur="5.92">printers or solve weird bugs but in the</text><text start="1039.919" dur="5.28">end i found a solution for each one of</text><text start="1042.4" dur="5.279">these and all procedures are listed in</text><text start="1045.199" dur="4.641">the video link below with most of the</text><text start="1047.679" dur="3.311">setups actually having videos to</text><text start="1049.84" dur="5.52">performance and i have sped this up 20x</text><text start="1059.2" dur="4.479">we will see the various systems here</text><text start="1060.96" dur="4.88">copying about 70 megabytes of data</text><text start="1063.679" dur="4.721">lantastic finishes first followed by the</text><text start="1065.84" dur="5.12">netwares and then from there lan manager</text><text start="1068.4" dur="3.84">ms client and xfs do take a little bit</text><text start="1070.96" dur="3.839">longer</text><text start="1072.24" dur="5.28">looking at read speed there was a degree</text><text start="1074.799" dur="3.601">of disparity and i think this resulted</text><text start="1077.52" dur="3.36">from</text><text start="1078.4" dur="5.36">land manager and ms client struggling to</text><text start="1080.88" dur="4.56">copy some of these ms office cab files</text><text start="1083.76" dur="4">it froze forever</text><text start="1085.44" dur="4.32">it may be a bug in writing or maybe</text><text start="1087.76" dur="4.159">there&amp;#39;s a buffer that can be increased</text><text start="1089.76" dur="4.08">but the performance was not good by an</text><text start="1091.919" dur="4.561">order of magnitude when it came to land</text><text start="1093.84" dur="5.6">manager and ms client</text><text start="1096.48" dur="5.12">and here you can see we have our results</text><text start="1099.44" dur="4.32">once again that write speed for land</text><text start="1101.6" dur="5.12">manager and ms client sticks out like a</text><text start="1103.76" dur="4.88">sore thumb taking almost seven minutes</text><text start="1106.72" dur="4.48">whereas the majority of the clients</text><text start="1108.64" dur="4.8">wrote in about two or three</text><text start="1111.2" dur="4">and as for read speed you can see that</text><text start="1113.44" dur="3.52">pretty much all of the clients were in</text><text start="1115.2" dur="3.44">line with each other</text><text start="1116.96" dur="4">however it does look like we have a</text><text start="1118.64" dur="4.02">clear winner here and that would be</text><text start="1120.96" dur="3.92">lantastic</text><text start="1122.66" dur="4.139">[Music]</text><text start="1124.88" dur="4.64">here we have everything we&amp;#39;ve looked at</text><text start="1126.799" dur="4.081">today in one big table for your</text><text start="1129.52" dur="3.76">convenience</text><text start="1130.88" dur="4.24">and it was really an interesting study i</text><text start="1133.28" dur="4.399">was really surprised to see some of the</text><text start="1135.12" dur="5.52">results in particular the fact that</text><text start="1137.679" dur="5.841">lantastic was so fast which was really</text><text start="1140.64" dur="3.919">really cool and also the most memory</text><text start="1143.52" dur="4.24">efficient</text><text start="1144.559" dur="5.921">so as far as winners and losers for me i</text><text start="1147.76" dur="3.52">have to declare lantastic a winner</text><text start="1150.48" dur="2.64">now</text><text start="1151.28" dur="4.24">that&amp;#39;s not to say that it meets all</text><text start="1153.12" dur="5.28">applications in a lot of cases i</text><text start="1155.52" dur="5.6">actually use lan manager and the reason</text><text start="1158.4" dur="4.639">why is because it connects easily to smb</text><text start="1161.12" dur="4.08">shares and well</text><text start="1163.039" dur="5.121">we live in a microsoft ecosystem when it</text><text start="1165.2" dur="5.52">comes to windows and dos it&amp;#39;s just more</text><text start="1168.16" dur="5.28">convenient but there&amp;#39;s no question that</text><text start="1170.72" dur="5.839">you pay a penalty by using land manager</text><text start="1173.44" dur="4.73">or some other smb client on an ms-dos</text><text start="1176.559" dur="3.201">system</text><text start="1178.17" dur="3.59">[Music]</text><text start="1179.76" dur="4.159">i did have a couple of weird performance</text><text start="1181.76" dur="4.799">snafus with xfs</text><text start="1183.919" dur="4.801">i can&amp;#39;t really explain why it might have</text><text start="1186.559" dur="3.201">been a config system or auto exec bat</text><text start="1188.72" dur="3.28">setting</text><text start="1189.76" dur="4.56">so that made it kind of interesting but</text><text start="1192" dur="4.88">all in all it performed very well</text><text start="1194.32" dur="5.68">of course the downside to xfs</text><text start="1196.88" dur="4.56">is it connects to a pc nfsd client which</text><text start="1200" dur="3.76">is not current</text><text start="1201.44" dur="4.239">but if you&amp;#39;re interested installing it</text><text start="1203.76" dur="3.279">it can be done and built from source</text><text start="1205.679" dur="3.521">code and of course we do have a</text><text start="1207.039" dur="3.441">procedure on how to do that here on the</text><text start="1209.2" dur="4.32">channel</text><text start="1210.48" dur="5.679">when it comes to netware i have to say</text><text start="1213.52" dur="5.68">it&amp;#39;s the rock it&amp;#39;s always kind of been a</text><text start="1216.159" dur="6.88">solid foundation for dos networking</text><text start="1219.2" dur="6.24">it has support in windows nt windows 95</text><text start="1223.039" dur="5.681">most windows versions that were of the</text><text start="1225.44" dur="4.479">retro era and it&amp;#39;s a great choice</text><text start="1228.72" dur="3.6">i was very impressed with the</text><text start="1229.919" dur="4.88">performance of all of my netex client</text><text start="1232.32" dur="4.64">applications here and was very impressed</text><text start="1234.799" dur="3.201">with what personal network brought to</text><text start="1236.96" dur="3.36">the table</text><text start="1238" dur="5.12">so all in all each one of these</text><text start="1240.32" dur="4.239">solutions has its pluses and minuses and</text><text start="1243.12" dur="3.84">applications</text><text start="1244.559" dur="4.881">and also i&amp;#39;ll say it again the read</text><text start="1246.96" dur="4.64">speeds and write speeds that i got were</text><text start="1249.44" dur="3.119">mine and you may not have something</text><text start="1251.6" dur="3.52">similar</text><text start="1252.559" dur="4.401">so i encourage you to try out a variety</text><text start="1255.12" dur="6.52">of these methods if you&amp;#39;re looking to</text><text start="1256.96" dur="4.68">set up your own dos network</text><text start="1263.52"
