episode</text><text start="4.64" dur="3.999">we're going to be traveling back to the</text><text start="6.399" dur="5.921">turn of the century to take a look at</text><text start="8.639" dur="5.761">win linux 2000 a linux distro designed</text><text start="12.32" dur="4.799">for windows users who were thinking</text><text start="14.4" dur="5.12">about switching over to the dark side</text><text start="17.119" dur="4.24">that side that 90s microsoft didn't want</text><text start="19.52" dur="3.999">you to know about filled with open</text><text start="21.359" dur="4.24">source free and community supported</text><text start="23.519" dur="3.201">software oh gosh is there anything worse</text><text start="25.599" dur="3.041">than that well yeah if you were</text><text start="26.72" dur="3.36">microsoft in the 90s there pretty much</text><text start="28.64" dur="3.84">wasn't uh but this was really a</text><text start="30.08" dur="4.72">different time for microsoft and the</text><text start="32.48" dur="4.48">computing world as a whole and with the</text><text start="34.8" dur="4.079">ongoing antitrust case brought on by the</text><text start="36.96" dur="3.919">us government there was this shred of</text><text start="38.879" dur="4.321">hope in the linux community that you</text><text start="40.879" dur="4.481">know maybe microsoft's days of enjoying</text><text start="43.2" dur="4.56">the stronghold that they had on the</text><text start="45.36" dur="3.92">operating system market were numbered</text><text start="47.76" dur="3.52">maybe they were going to get broken up</text><text start="49.28" dur="4.16">and that monopolistic power was going to</text><text start="51.28" dur="3.279">go away and other operating systems</text><text start="53.44" dur="3.2">would have a chance to make a</text><text start="54.559" dur="3.761">substantial impact in the consumer</text><text start="56.64" dur="3.52">market of course as we all know</text><text start="58.32" dur="3.36">microsoft never got broken up and</text><text start="60.16" dur="3.84">windows continued to grow in market</text><text start="61.68" dur="4.64">share though it certainly faced a bit of</text><text start="64" dur="4.56">a challenge from mac os and linux of</text><text start="66.32" dur="4.4">course grew in market share as well but</text><text start="68.56" dur="4.32">none of them ever matched and still do</text><text start="70.72" dur="4.8">not match windows in the consumer</text><text start="72.88" dur="5.04">desktop operating system space so win</text><text start="75.52" dur="4.72">linux 2000 was a product of this</text><text start="77.92" dur="4.72">environment and it was designed for</text><text start="80.24" dur="4.96">windows users who were curious about the</text><text start="82.64" dur="4.479">linux world and wanted to experience it</text><text start="85.2" dur="4.239">without needing to read up on how to</text><text start="87.119" dur="4.721">partition your drive and go through the</text><text start="89.439" dur="5.281">text-based installation process which</text><text start="91.84" dur="4.56">could be extremely confusing for novice</text><text start="94.72" dur="3.439">users who just went out and bought a</text><text start="96.4" dur="4">windows computer that came with it</text><text start="98.159" dur="4.64">pre-installed so when linux solves this</text><text start="100.4" dur="5.12">problem by bringing the entire setup</text><text start="102.799" dur="5.441">process for this operating system over</text><text start="105.52" dur="5.44">to a windows setup executable that</text><text start="108.24" dur="5.04">installs just like any other windows</text><text start="110.96" dur="4.32">program so if you had installed</text><text start="113.28" dur="4.479">microsoft office for example you'd be</text><text start="115.28" dur="4.4">able to install this with relative ease</text><text start="117.759" dur="3.761">it's very similar to how the wubi</text><text start="119.68" dur="4.64">installer which would come years down</text><text start="121.52" dur="5.68">the road works but wind linux 2000</text><text start="124.32" dur="5.12">claimed to be the only linux distro from</text><text start="127.2" dur="4.56">this time period that would install in</text><text start="129.44" dur="4.64">this way within this windows setup</text><text start="131.76" dur="3.92">executable so without any further ado</text><text start="134.08" dur="4.72">let's see how it works let's check it</text><text start="135.68" dur="5.04">out so we're going to eject the 98 pc's</text><text start="138.8" dur="4.64">dvd drive right here of course we are</text><text start="140.72" dur="4.08">running windows 98 a fresh install in</text><text start="143.44" dur="4.159">fact look at that i forgot to take out</text><text start="144.8" dur="4.88">the driver disk so we'll set that aside</text><text start="147.599" dur="4.161">and we'll put in our wind linux 2000</text><text start="149.68" dur="4.559">disk and we'll be on our way here so it</text><text start="151.76" dur="4.64">automatically starts the setup process</text><text start="154.239" dur="4.161">right when you put the disc in and yeah</text><text start="156.4" dur="4.32">as you can see it looks just like any</text><text start="158.4" dur="4.64">other window setup executable so we're</text><text start="160.72" dur="3.92">gonna hit next here we're going to hit</text><text start="163.04" dur="3.04">next it's gonna check our hard drive for</text><text start="164.64" dur="3.28">errors and this is where you get to</text><text start="166.08" dur="3.6">choose whether you want a compact full</text><text start="167.92" dur="3.52">or a typical installation we're going to</text><text start="169.68" dur="3.12">go with full and it's going to give you</text><text start="171.44" dur="3.92">a little bit of a warning here that says</text><text start="172.8" dur="4.64">wind linux 2000 or win linux installs a</text><text start="175.36" dur="4.4">new operating system and must be placed</text><text start="177.44" dur="3.76">on a fixed drive so it basically tells</text><text start="179.76" dur="4">you don't install this on a removable</text><text start="181.2" dur="4.72">drive because it may not be able to boot</text><text start="183.76" dur="5.52">the system and that's because uh you</text><text start="185.92" dur="5.84">actually launch into wind linux 2000</text><text start="189.28" dur="4.64">from windows there's no partitioning or</text><text start="191.76" dur="4.08">anything done at all and there's no boot</text><text start="193.92" dur="3.52">manager you still have to boot into</text><text start="195.84" dur="3.52">windows and then you launch wind linux</text><text start="197.44" dur="3.36">2000 from there if that sounds kind of</text><text start="199.36" dur="2.64">confusing i'll show you how that works</text><text start="200.8" dur="3.6">once we get done with the install</text><text start="202" dur="3.76">process here so you have to make sure</text><text start="204.4" dur="3.919">this is very important it says right</text><text start="205.76" dur="4.32">here it must be installed in the linux</text><text start="208.319" dur="3.041">directory you can change the drive that</text><text start="210.08" dur="2.799">it's installed on if you have like a</text><text start="211.36" dur="3.84">secondary hard drive you want to install</text><text start="212.879" dur="4.481">it to but it must be installed in the</text><text start="215.2" dur="3.679">linux directory i believe it has to be</text><text start="217.36" dur="3.12">on the root of the drive as well though</text><text start="218.879" dur="3.36">it doesn't necessarily say that right</text><text start="220.48" dur="2.96">here so we're going to hit on next and</text><text start="222.239" dur="3.601">then here it just tells you what it's</text><text start="223.44" dur="3.76">going to name itself in the program</text><text start="225.84" dur="3.52">folder it's going to put everything in</text><text start="227.2" dur="3.84">and you hit next and</text><text start="229.36" dur="4">that's it for this first part it goes</text><text start="231.04" dur="5.199">right off and begins copying files from</text><text start="233.36" dur="4.72">the cd over to your hard drive now a</text><text start="236.239" dur="3.841">couple things about this this was</text><text start="238.08" dur="3.76">completely free to download just like a</text><text start="240.08" dur="4.56">lot of other linux distros so you could</text><text start="241.84" dur="4.959">get this for free but it did cost thirty</text><text start="244.64" dur="3.92">dollars if you wanted to get a disk</text><text start="246.799" dur="3.52">mailed to you which is understandable if</text><text start="248.56" dur="3.44">they're going to you know make that up</text><text start="250.319" dur="3.92">and ship it to you so they did charge</text><text start="252" dur="4.32">for that and there were other versions</text><text start="254.239" dur="5.52">of when linux released the latest</text><text start="256.32" dur="6.319">version was win linux 2003 which came</text><text start="259.759" dur="4.481">out well sometime in 2003 or sometime in</text><text start="262.639" dur="3.84">the early 2000s perhaps i don't know if</text><text start="264.24" dur="4.399">it was specifically 2003 but i would</text><text start="266.479" dur="4.081">guess that from the name and after that</text><text start="268.639" dur="4.721">things kind of went quiet in the win</text><text start="270.56" dur="5.04">linux world the website winlinux.net</text><text start="273.36" dur="5.2">according to the copyright date was last</text><text start="275.6" dur="5.44">updated sometime in 2004 and it just</text><text start="278.56" dur="4.24">kind of faded into obscurity after that</text><text start="281.04" dur="4.8">and the web archive when you try to go</text><text start="282.8" dur="4.72">to 2007 2008 and beyond it just doesn't</text><text start="285.84" dur="4.24">really load anything it's just like a</text><text start="287.52" dur="4.32">blank page and someone still owns the</text><text start="290.08" dur="3.52">domain today and there is a website</text><text start="291.84" dur="3.52">hosted at winlinux.net it's just</text><text start="293.6" dur="3.84">somebody's extremely bare bones</text><text start="295.36" dur="4.08">wordpress site with nothing on it it's</text><text start="297.44" dur="3.84">kind of bizarre but uh hey if someone</text><text start="299.44" dur="4.479">still owns the domain so that's cool so</text><text start="301.28" dur="5.44">yeah that's that's win linux 2000 oh and</text><text start="303.919" dur="5.041">also one of the major things is the ui</text><text start="306.72" dur="3.919">was designed to kind of look like</text><text start="308.96" dur="3.679">windows which was something that you</text><text start="310.639" dur="4.4">know you would want as a windows user</text><text start="312.639" dur="4.241">migrating to linux it would be helpful</text><text start="315.039" dur="4">to have an environment that looked</text><text start="316.88" dur="4.24">similar so the window borders and</text><text start="319.039" dur="3.761">everything the you know controls and</text><text start="321.12" dur="3.519">stuff like that the layout they've tried</text><text start="322.8" dur="4.48">to really mimic windows as best that</text><text start="324.639" dur="4.721">they could it does run the k desktop</text><text start="327.28" dur="4.08">environment or kde so there's definitely</text><text start="329.36" dur="3.76">still a learning curve i mean much less</text><text start="331.36" dur="3.6">so with wind linux 2000 the learning</text><text start="333.12" dur="3.919">curve really only begins when you boot</text><text start="334.96" dur="3.679">into the operating system because you</text><text start="337.039" dur="3.361">know there are major differences between</text><text start="338.639" dur="3.201">linux and windows i mean linux uses a</text><text start="340.4" dur="2.799">completely different file system</text><text start="341.84" dur="3.359">structure so there's things that you're</text><text start="343.199" dur="3.84">still going to have to know and to you</text><text start="345.199" dur="3.84">know learn but the best way in a lot of</text><text start="347.039" dur="4">cases is just to experience it yourself</text><text start="349.039" dur="4.481">and that's what wind linux 2000 was all</text><text start="351.039" dur="4.321">about it gave you easy access it's just</text><text start="353.52" dur="3.44">getting in the door that's the big thing</text><text start="355.36" dur="3.279">if you can get in the door you can</text><text start="356.96" dur="3.04">figure out all that stuff later on right</text><text start="358.639" dur="2.881">we're installing here we're going to let</text><text start="360" dur="4.61">it finish up and i'll be right back with</text><text start="361.52" dur="10.09">you guys</text><text start="364.61" dur="7">[Music]</text><text start="374.09" dur="6.63">[Music]</text><text start="378.56" dur="4.079">all right so we've just finished up that</text><text start="380.72" dur="4.8">first portion of the installation and it</text><text start="382.639" dur="4.721">took about 15 to 20 minutes which is</text><text start="385.52" dur="3.119">pretty understandable for an entire</text><text start="387.36" dur="3.679">operating system there are a lot of</text><text start="388.639" dur="4.881">files to copy over so it's now going to</text><text start="391.039" dur="4.641">launch the wind linux 2000 configuration</text><text start="393.52" dur="4">utility and this is where things can get</text><text start="395.68" dur="3.04">a little more confusing certainly not on</text><text start="397.52" dur="3.28">the screen where it's asking you for</text><text start="398.72" dur="3.599">your name but uh it it's going to get</text><text start="400.8" dur="3.28">into some driver stuff which could</text><text start="402.319" dur="3.361">definitely you know confuse some people</text><text start="404.08" dur="4">but they've definitely tried to make it</text><text start="405.68" dur="4.56">as simple as they possibly can so we're</text><text start="408.08" dur="4.8">going to put in our name here and i'll</text><text start="410.24" dur="5.44">just use michael as my login password</text><text start="412.88" dur="5.12">will do mjd super secure and you have</text><text start="415.68" dur="4.56">the option to use the same password for</text><text start="418" dur="3.919">root if you want to</text><text start="420.24" dur="3.92">this is generally not a good practice</text><text start="421.919" dur="4.161">it's never a good practice uh to do this</text><text start="424.16" dur="4.96">but we're gonna do it anyways because</text><text start="426.08" dur="4.48">why not and uh yeah so right here is</text><text start="429.12" dur="3.359">where it gets into the driver stuff so</text><text start="430.56" dur="4.4">it says your video card was not detected</text><text start="432.479" dur="5.201">as a supported card and when linux will</text><text start="434.96" dur="4.16">be configured for standard vga this is</text><text start="437.68" dur="3.519">not an optimal configuration it's</text><text start="439.12" dur="3.84">limited to only 16 colors and right here</text><text start="441.199" dur="4.161">is where you can go through and view the</text><text start="442.96" dur="4.56">devices that it's detected and more</text><text start="445.36" dur="3.839">importantly the devices that it did not</text><text start="447.52" dur="3.6">detect and you can change these settings</text><text start="449.199" dur="3.761">if you want to so for certain things</text><text start="451.12" dur="4">like the video here since it wasn't able</text><text start="452.96" dur="4.88">to load a proper driver it's going to</text><text start="455.12" dur="5.6">force vga just you know load this really</text><text start="457.84" dur="4.799">basic driver and run it at 640 by 480</text><text start="460.72" dur="4.319">though i think we should be able to</text><text start="462.639" dur="4.96">actually yeah it's loaded two uh</text><text start="465.039" dur="5.521">two different displays here one 640 by</text><text start="467.599" dur="4.481">480 and 1800 by 600 so we should be able</text><text start="470.56" dur="3.84">to change between those and hopefully</text><text start="472.08" dur="4.799">get a little higher resolution than 640</text><text start="474.4" dur="3.76">by 480. but yeah you can go through make</text><text start="476.879" dur="3.121">sure everything looks good and when</text><text start="478.16" dur="3.68">you're ready you just hit next and it</text><text start="480" dur="3.36">says finishing configuration your system</text><text start="481.84" dur="3.44">will now be configured to run wind linux</text><text start="483.36" dur="4.32">2000 on your computer you'll notice you</text><text start="485.28" dur="5.199">have a couple new icons on the desktop</text><text start="487.68" dur="5.44">number one is the release notes text</text><text start="490.479" dur="7.28">document so you can open this up uh this</text><text start="493.12" dur="7.44">is the update from november 11 1999 you</text><text start="497.759" dur="4.88">also have boot win linux 2000 this is</text><text start="500.56" dur="5.039">what i was talking about before because</text><text start="502.639" dur="5.041">wind linux 2000 does not partition your</text><text start="505.599" dur="4.561">drive at all so we're gonna boot win</text><text start="507.68" dur="4.64">linux 2000 and windows will let us know</text><text start="510.16" dur="3.6">that it's set to run in ms-dos mode and</text><text start="512.32" dur="3.68">cannot run while other programs are</text><text start="513.76" dur="4.56">running it will close all other programs</text><text start="516" dur="4.719">yes we wish to continue it will log out</text><text start="518.32" dur="4.719">of our windows session and swap us to</text><text start="520.719" dur="4.401">ms-dos and then begin to boot wind linux</text><text start="523.039" dur="4.401">2000</text><text start="525.12" dur="4.48">and there we go and we get a kernel</text><text start="527.44" dur="5.839">panic isn't that exciting unable to</text><text start="529.6" dur="6">mount root file system on 801 oh boy</text><text start="533.279" dur="3.68">okay so uh yeah this is something that</text><text start="535.6" dur="3.28">you would definitely not want to</text><text start="536.959" dur="4.401">experience we're gonna restart here and</text><text start="538.88" dur="4.8">we gotta do some troubleshooting well it</text><text start="541.36" dur="5.44">turns out that the troubleshooting</text><text start="543.68" dur="5.44">utility turns out to be</text><text start="546.8" dur="5.039">a simple uh</text><text start="549.12" dur="5.44">program here that you get to send a</text><text start="551.839" dur="4.881">message to the developers so that</text><text start="554.56" dur="3.76">doesn't really help us now because well</text><text start="556.72" dur="2.88">that development team isn't around</text><text start="558.32" dur="2.72">anymore so we're not going to be able to</text><text start="559.6" dur="3.52">get help from them at all but yeah this</text><text start="561.04" dur="4.799">is the program group that it creates in</text><text start="563.12" dur="5.2">the start menu and we can launch the</text><text start="565.839" dur="5.201">configuration utility again if we want</text><text start="568.32" was it it was as simple as that</text><text start="761.36" dur="5.84">okay so keep that in mind if you uh if</text><text start="765.04" dur="3.68">you try to of course it is you know it's</text><text start="767.2" dur="2.8">gonna vary depending on what hardware</text><text start="768.72" dur="3.44">you have but if you were to try to do</text><text start="770" would</text><text start="902" dur="4.079">suspect kind of a middle finger to</text><text start="903.44" dur="5.28">microsoft because you know microsoft was</text><text start="906.079"
