hello everybody and welcome back toanother video now in today's episodewe're going to be traveling back to theturn of the century to take a look atwin linux 2000 a linux distro designedfor windows users who were thinkingabout switching over to the dark sidethat side that 90s microsoft didn't wantyou to know about filled with opensource free and community supportedsoftware oh gosh is there anything worsethan that well yeah if you weremicrosoft in the 90s there pretty muchwasn't uh but this was really adifferent time for microsoft and thecomputing world as a whole and with theongoing antitrust case brought on by theus government there was this shred ofhope in the linux community that youknow maybe microsoft's days of enjoyingthe stronghold that they had on theoperating system market were numberedmaybe they were going to get broken upand that monopolistic power was going togo away and other operating systemswould have a chance to make asubstantial impact in the consumermarket of course as we all knowmicrosoft never got broken up andwindows continued to grow in marketshare though it certainly faced a bit ofa challenge from mac os and linux ofcourse grew in market share as well butnone of them ever matched and still donot match windows in the consumerdesktop operating system space so winlinux 2000 was a product of thisenvironment and it was designed forwindows users who were curious about thelinux world and wanted to experience itwithout needing to read up on how topartition your drive and go through thetext-based installation process whichcould be extremely confusing for noviceusers who just went out and bought awindows computer that came with itpre-installed so when linux solves thisproblem by bringing the entire setupprocess for this operating system overto a windows setup executable thatinstalls just like any other windowsprogram so if you had installedmicrosoft office for example you'd beable to install this with relative easeit's very similar to how the wubiinstaller which would come years downthe road works but wind linux 2000claimed to be the only linux distro fromthis time period that would install inthis way within this windows setupexecutable so without any further adolet's see how it works let's check itout so we're going to eject the 98 pc'sdvd drive right here of course we arerunning windows 98 a fresh install infact look at that i forgot to take outthe driver disk so we'll set that asideand we'll put in our wind linux 2000disk and we'll be on our way here so itautomatically starts the setup processright when you put the disc in and yeahas you can see it looks just like anyother window setup executable so we'regonna hit next here we're going to hitnext it's gonna check our hard drive forerrors and this is where you get tochoose whether you want a compact fullor a typical installation we're going togo with full and it's going to give youa little bit of a warning here that sayswind linux 2000 or win linux installs anew operating system and must be placedon a fixed drive so it basically tellsyou don't install this on a removabledrive because it may not be able to bootthe system and that's because uh youactually launch into wind linux 2000from windows there's no partitioning oranything done at all and there's no bootmanager you still have to boot intowindows and then you launch wind linux2000 from there if that sounds kind ofconfusing i'll show you how that worksonce we get done with the installprocess here so you have to make surethis is very important it says righthere it must be installed in the linuxdirectory you can change the drive thatit's installed on if you have like asecondary hard drive you want to installit to but it must be installed in thelinux directory i believe it has to beon the root of the drive as well thoughit doesn't necessarily say that righthere so we're going to hit on next andthen here it just tells you what it'sgoing to name itself in the programfolder it's going to put everything inand you hit next andthat's it for this first part it goesright off and begins copying files fromthe cd over to your hard drive now acouple things about this this wascompletely free to download just like alot of other linux distros so you couldget this for free but it did cost thirtydollars if you wanted to get a diskmailed to you which is understandable ifthey're going to you know make that upand ship it to you so they did chargefor that and there were other versionsof when linux released the latestversion was win linux 2003 which cameout well sometime in 2003 or sometime inthe early 2000s perhaps i don't know ifit was specifically 2003 but i wouldguess that from the name and after thatthings kind of went quiet in the winlinux world the website winlinux.netaccording to the copyright date was lastupdated sometime in 2004 and it justkind of faded into obscurity after thatand the web archive when you try to goto 2007 2008 and beyond it just doesn'treally load anything it's just like ablank page and someone still owns thedomain today and there is a websitehosted at winlinux.net it's justsomebody's extremely bare boneswordpress site with nothing on it it'skind of bizarre but uh hey if someonestill owns the domain so that's cool soyeah that's that's win linux 2000 oh andalso one of the major things is the uiwas designed to kind of look likewindows which was something that youknow you would want as a windows usermigrating to linux it would be helpfulto have an environment that lookedsimilar so the window borders andeverything the you know controls andstuff like that the layout they've triedto really mimic windows as best thatthey could it does run the k desktopenvironment or kde so there's definitelystill a learning curve i mean much lessso with wind linux 2000 the learningcurve really only begins when you bootinto the operating system because youknow there are major differences betweenlinux and windows i mean linux uses acompletely different file systemstructure so there's things that you'restill going to have to know and to youknow learn but the best way in a lot ofcases is just to experience it yourselfand that's what wind linux 2000 was allabout it gave you easy access it's justgetting in the door that's the big thingif you can get in the door you canfigure out all that stuff later on rightwe're installing here we're going to letit finish up and i'll be right back withyou guys[Music][Music]all right so we've just finished up thatfirst portion of the installation and ittook about 15 to 20 minutes which ispretty understandable for an entireoperating system there are a lot offiles to copy over so it's now going tolaunch the wind linux 2000 configurationutility and this is where things can geta little more confusing certainly not onthe screen where it's asking you foryour name but uh it it's going to getinto some driver stuff which coulddefinitely you know confuse some peoplebut they've definitely tried to make itas simple as they possibly can so we'regoing to put in our name here and i'lljust use michael as my login passwordwill do mjd super secure and you havethe option to use the same password forroot if you want tothis is generally not a good practiceit's never a good practice uh to do thisbut we're gonna do it anyways becausewhy not and uh yeah so right here iswhere it gets into the driver stuff soit says your video card was not detectedas a supported card and when linux willbe configured for standard vga this isnot an optimal configuration it'slimited to only 16 colors and right hereis where you can go through and view thedevices that it's detected and moreimportantly the devices that it did notdetect and you can change these settingsif you want to so for certain thingslike the video here since it wasn't ableto load a proper driver it's going toforce vga just you know load this reallybasic driver and run it at 640 by 480though i think we should be able toactually yeah it's loaded two uhtwo different displays here one 640 by480 and 1800 by 600 so we should be ableto change between those and hopefullyget a little higher resolution than 640by 480. but yeah you can go through makesure everything looks good and whenyou're ready you just hit next and itsays finishing configuration your systemwill now be configured to run wind linux2000 on your computer you'll notice youhave a couple new icons on the desktopnumber one is the release notes textdocument so you can open this up uh thisis the update from november 11 1999 youalso have boot win linux 2000 this iswhat i was talking about before becausewind linux 2000 does not partition yourdrive at all so we're gonna boot winlinux 2000 and windows will let us knowthat it's set to run in ms-dos mode andcannot run while other programs arerunning it will close all other programsyes we wish to continue it will log outof our windows session and swap us toms-dos and then begin to boot wind linux2000and there we go and we get a kernelpanic isn't that exciting unable tomount root file system on 801 oh boyokay so uh yeah this is something thatyou would definitely not want toexperience we're gonna restart here andwe gotta do some troubleshooting well itturns out that the troubleshootingutility turns out to bea simple uhprogram here that you get to send amessage to the developers so thatdoesn't really help us now because wellthat development team isn't aroundanymore so we're not going to be able toget help from them at all but yeah thisis the program group that it creates inthe start menu and we can launch theconfiguration utility again if we wantto and okay so we're in a bit of aninteresting predicament here i believeit's trying to mount on sda1 that wouldseem to be the case judging from what wehave hereif you run the win linux executable filein the c linux win linux folderit'll tell you how many hard drives youhave and what the linux system is goingto try to mount that drive as so it sayssda1 is c but this is an ide drive andtypically sda is reserved for scuzzy orsata drives not ide hda is usuallyreserved for ideso i wonder if we can just go intolet's go to programs here wind linux2000and go to the config utility hereand we're not going to bother changingthe password configuration all that ifyou go to advanced here there is thisoption to boot wind linux from userdefined hard drive partition egdev sda1 so we'll dodevhda1 and hit okayor i guess you can't hit enter okaywe'll hit okay down here let's just lookat these other boot parameters first umoh look at that you can load someadditional modules uh video capture cardomega zip drives older i omega zipdrives so that's pretty cool so we'llhit okwe'll hit next and finish and let'stry thatlet's see if this works so yeah if anovice user were to run into thisi meanthis is definitely not uh not the mostpleasant thing to deal withlet's hope uh oh it's 0.301 nowum okay well i wonder if maybe it'sdetecting hda1 as the cd drive in fact ithink the cd drive might be the primaryin fact let's boot into the bios hereyeah the primary masteristhe cd-rom drive yeah i found thisthread over onlinuxquestions.org of somebody who isessentially in this same predicamentthough they were just in 2002 when youwould actually be wanting to use thisand they were using oh and check thatout they said they were using wind linux2003 in 2002 so that answers thatquestion looks like it came out before2003. i did find this really interestingarticle from tech republic from the year2000 of somebody who also ran into thesame problem and just gave up and hesaid like after a few tries of likerestarting the computer and uhreinstalling wind linux likeuninstalling and going through theinstallation process again they justgave up because they were so fed up withit okay so it's interesting i justnoticed this you see right up here hdaand it's got the dvd-rom drive and thenhdcthat's the hard drive yeah maybe it'sthat simple maybe it's got to changethat to htc but i don't know why theprogram in windows there is detecting itas sda1 well yeah this is certainly notreally making my statement at thebeginning of the video where it's likeoh this is so easy you know you justinstall it like a program in windows andit's all good yeah it's not reallyliving up to uh what we're actuallydealing with here htc one okay there wego that was it it was as simple as thatokay so keep that in mind if you uh ifyou try to of course it is you know it'sgonna vary depending on what hardwareyou have but if you were to try to dothis and it gives you that kernel panicuh and it says it cannot mount the rootfile system it's probably because windlinux is just trying to mount it on thewrong device now your computer runs windlinux 2000 and here's the beautiful kdesktop environment before it was calledkdeuh so we're gonna log in gosh i love theroots oh no the my mouse isn't workingso i do have a usb mouse and it could bethat the uhthat the usb driver here is not loadedmy mouse is not working let me grab aps2 mouse yay there we go so what i wassaying before is i love the root usericon here like this is looking prettythis is like it's a pretty great iconbut we're going to log into my accounthereand you can choose your session type isthere anything other than kde or is kdethe only yes kde is the only thing okayso we're going to go so as i mentionedearlier it did not detect our displaydevice that we have in here so it didn'tload a proper display driver so thatresults in some pretty interestinggraphical effects going on as we'removing windows around which isunfortunate but hey we got the thingloaded that's the most important thingso let's see what version of kde thatwe're rocking here kde desktopenvironment was written by the kde teamoh there's no version number okay ithought there'd be a version number inthe about menu there i guess not aboutkfm this is the uh the k file managerokay so that's version 1.167.2.21uh one of the other things i hadmentioned before is that yes this doestry to mimic the windows ui as best asit can and that is something that ittouts on the website as well so you'vegot a similar color scheme even asimilar gradient up here this blue toblack uh gradient that you would find inwindows 98 or 95 by default so it'slittle things like that that just makethis feel a little bit morefamiliar to a windows user the the menudown here if you click on this you'vegot all your application groups up hereyour search function go to the homedirectory help information refresh thedesktop open up the trash can let's goand see what we have installed let's goto applications here so we do havenetscape this is one of the uh thingsmentioned on the website as well i wouldsuspect kind of a middle finger tomicrosoft because you know microsoft wasdefinitely trying to get rid of netscapethey did not like netscape at all andinternet explorer basically with thembundling ie with windows essentiallykilled netscape i mean i've done a wholevideo on that but uh yeah that's uhthat's the short version of it and itlooks like this is communicator version4.7 so yeah if you would use netskipcommunicator on windows well you'd feelright at home because the ui isessentially exactly the same alright solet's see what else we got here so wetook a look at netscape we do haveif you want to open up and reallyuh explore that we did that in theplaystation 2 video i guess it's kind ofa rule if there's a installation ona linux issue that you install you haveto take a look at it so let's see whatversion this is i'm going to guess imean it's definitely an early versionhere check out this aesthetic man inthis boot screen or this startup splashscreen here the gnu image manmanipulation platform oh yeah that'sreally really fancy how they changed thecolor of the text there oh manso let's see tip of the day the uses layers to let you organizeyour image think of them as a stack ofslides or filters awesome okay so we'llclose out of that and let's make let'ssee here let's do a new documentsix by two five six that's fine we'lluse all the default settings andlet's grab ourpen tool herelet's make this a nice like blueand you know write out uhlet's see mit's a really bad looking m there jdoh isn't that so beautiful okay and thenwe'll maybe change this to like a yellowand do that and let's call this amazingdot jpegand there we go beautiful it's beensaved so yeah gotta always use gim imean we're just having fun at this pointman we're just messing around with thisbecause it's always cool to explore anoperating system like this for the firsttimeso one thing that is worth mentioning ishow it has laid out your file structureon here so you've got this my hd icon onthe desktop which will open up the rootdirectory or what the system sees as theroot directory which in this case is thelinux folder on your hard drive on yourc drive back in windows right you hadthat linux folder so just like we did onwindows we can go into the wind linuxdirectory and we can see that linux.batsand the winlinux.exeand the bat file down here but you alsogot this dos folder here and this givesyou access to your windows files soyou've got my program or my programs mydocuments and program files here so ican go under program files we got nortonright here this is where nortonantivirus lives if you really wanted toi mean you're not going to launch it onlinux but you know there it is if youwanted to view those files and yeah soyou know you can still get access to uhto your files on the windows side ofthings which is definitely very usefulyou've also got a shortcut to that dosfolder right here on the desktop you'vealso got a floppy shortcut right here ifyou don't have anything in the floppydisk drive right now so it's not goingto do anything you got a cd-rom shortcutas well you've got uh mp3 player what isthis uh doesn't show up uh ultra well uhthe x multimedia system xmms okayi personally have not used this beforeunfortunately it does not show up reallywell because it's running in 16 colorshere and that does not look the greatestuh again freaking graphics driver man iwish we hadsomething that we could load hereother than this just generic one that'slimited to 16 colors we can go todisplay properties though and here weare so this is where you can change theoh gosh that's looking really greatisn't it we can go to you can change thewallpaper if you want to let's browsehere andsee what what wallpapers we got let's gowith circuit that sounds intriguing ohyeah that looks it looks like a coolwallpaper unfortunately it just doesn'tyou know whatthis actually looks kind of neat i meanyeah they're all gonna be just notdisplaying the greatest but let's golet's just i'm just gonna hold the downarrow key and then i'm just gonna stompon a random one while looking away onetwo three stopand we're still goingstill going okayi think we looped back to the top hereuh yeah maybe i should not have held onthe down arrow key for that long becausewe are it's those growing through yeahit's got a lot of keystrokes to catch uptoman this is uh it's really going downthis list here okay pebble town boomthat works for me there we go so there'spebble town but i didn't mean to closethat let's go back and displayproperties uh you can set multipledesktop wallpapers for your differentdesktops if you wanted to do that so ondesktop 2 for example right now i don'thave a wallpaper i could set one if iwanted to let's go to screen saver hereyeah see this right here i mean this isgiving me a real windows vibe i meanjust the way this is laid out i mean thebackground yeah this is substantiallydifferent but screensaver this is prettydang close there you have it so let'ssee oh flame this looks nice let's seehow do you think i think this is gonnapreview all right this is probably gonnabe a mess ah no this looks pretty niceyeah that's a that's a neat littlescreen saverso colors you can change the colorscheme if you want tofonts style couple other things of noteyou've got free sieve on here so if youwanted to play around with thatthere you go you've got what appears tobe acrobat readerthis looks like your your helpinformation here which oh my gosh i didnot want to do that ohuh yeahthat uhthat was not uh oh that's probablybecause acrobats uhopened up there because netscape did thesame thingyeah so when you open up netscape itactually it i mean again improperdisplay driver that's again a very verycommon theme here i think you have toconnect to a server so we got to startup this here this is the free civ serverand there we go now we can connect andthere i've joined the game what nationwill you belet us see so i have never played freeciv before but if you knew how to playit well you could have a lot of fun hereuh we're probably gonna i'm probablygonna get down a bit of a rabbit holehere so we'll just close this for nowbut yeah freesive you got freesive onhere you've got uh this is netscapemessenger ton of games here i mean lookat all these games poker reversey smiletris oh this is kind of like through them until it's doneand the block is stuck in midair whichis great and i literally can't like ican't move it to theleft or the right so there's a bit of atactic you'd use to your advantage andsmile tris here it's still going it'sstilloh my gosh oh now it's doing my left andrightthere we go okay we're done now onething i want to do before we get out ofhere is let's log out of our sessionhere and let's go back to our loginscreen and we're gonna shut this downso we'll go to shutdownwe will shut down and this will powerdown the system like it's not just gonnaquit out of this and
