thesmoothness of the animation and it issmoother please don't be ignorant butrather the frequency with which your eyereceives updated information about thewhereabouts and activities of yourenemies so today's video is all aboutdetermining quantitativelyhow much faster a gamer with a 240hzdisplay will react versus a gamer with amore traditional 60hz display andwe invited a special guestgavin free of react fasterwe also want to know on average if thesmoother animations and the morefrequent updates allow our gamer testsubject here to kill the enemy sooner ormore reliably so here's our test rig onthe right hand side we've got our enemyor our target which is running a cs goserver on our high speed local areanetworkevery test needs to be run exactly thesame way so what we'll do is positionthis computer's character in this cornerright here so it's in exactly the samespot then we'll use this readout in thetop left to make sure that our weapon ispointed at the exact same pixel thenwhat we do is we take these two contactsand touch them together which lights upan led on our makey makey right herethat is going to synchronize with ourhigh speed camera when exactly ourtarget begins moving without making anynoise that will alert our test subjectso we're going to be using the samemonitor from acer for both our 60 hertzand our 240hz tests since the onlyvariable that we're trying to isolate isthe refresh rate each of our testsubjects gets two practice runs at 60hertz to ensure that they're familiarwith the test then we'll follow withthree runs at 60 three runs at 240 andthen four runs two at 60 and two at 240where the test subject isn't told themonitor refresh rate each timeso the way that this works is once againi'm pointed at exactly the same spotexact pixeland thened without me being able to see whathe's doing starts running at some pointnow let's talk about our timingmechanism so it's probably a littleoverkill but this here is awhat is this walk us through this is thephantom flex 4k it's what i've used fora long time on my channel it's about afive year old camera at this pointthere's not really any storage mediathat can write so fast when you'retaking in that many images so it recordsto an internal ram buffer so it's alwaysrecording five second buffer and thenall i do is just stop it and it keepsthe previous five seconds then we recordthat onto some very fast flash storagethese are expensivesadlyso the way the camera works speed wiseit has a certain amount of throughput itcan put in and then you just find thecombination of resolution and speed thatyou want so if you lower the resolutionthe frame rate goes higher sure so whatare we going to be using well that's upto you really i shoot everything at 4kwhich will give us a max of a thousandwhich would probablydo pretty well in these lightingconditions it's kind of dark at 2000 andalso we are relying on the light comingfrom the monitors which i was slightlyconcerned about but it looks like it'snot too dark okay that's how much lightwe have right and then watch it alldisappear as the frame goes off this islike how a fly sees us like that'sthat's what i always think of yeah it'slike we just look like that to flyand they can just they can just likecasually fly off and flip us off and wecome nowhere closeshould i do like a self slap or someoneelse could slap you yeah do bit more and thenmoved to aim i guess sonow you were the most consistentconsistently averagei feel like whenever i saw anything iwould just kind of spasm my hand awayand try and just catch up with it laterbut i think that's just down to me asjust not being very goodmaybe it was more of a focus thingyeah so your times to killwere actually pretty good on the 240hzthis one was actually freakishly fast on60854 milliseconds and when you considerthat i had a316 millisecond reaction time itactually only took mehalf a second to kill the target once istarted moving that's really goodactuallyyour next result was kind of terriblenot as good as a second and a half sooverall kill-wiseyou're the sameuh i missed a runand i'm at fivesowe'reall pretty terriblelook at his fake humilityyeah i feel like there's so many morevariables that aren't measured here likehow in the zone we were and like whatthe the other person is psyching us outwhat does that mean oh it's like myselfand just the pressure spent some more timeanalyzing the data and found some reallycool thingsoneeveryone's reaction times were better at240 hertz and strangely by more thanjust 12 millisecondsif i had to guess i'd say part of thisis because it's easier to track wherethe target is headed and then decidewhere to move the cursor before youbegin to movetwoevery single test subject was morelikely to kill the opponent at 240 hertzin the limited amount of time that theyhad and threethe way that high refresh rate affectsyour gaming could end up being heavilydependent on the way that you aim sotake a look at this map of all of myshotsmy accuracy and my precision were bothactually very similar at 60 versus 240hertzso regardless of refresh rate i'm takingmy time tracking the target and onlypulling the trigger when i think i'vegot a clean shotand it's funny it's not something i'veever thought about but it makes sensenow that i'm looking at it because i'mtotally one of those jackasses thatgrabs the sniper class so everyone elsehas to play medic or whatever so for merevealing my position is always a factorin the back of my mind don't pull thetrigger unless i think i'm going to hitsomething all right now let's look atedzeled's more of like a flick shot kind ofplayer so he tends to react and shootfirst and figure out the other detailslaternow as the most skilled of our testsubjects he clearly benefited the mostfrom high refresh rate and said that ithelped him time the release of his shotmuch better as he pannedacross his targetfinally there's gavin fairness to gav no one really aimsonly with their mouse like it's mucheasier to strafe while you're trying toline up a shot like this but his resultswere still far and away the worst atboth refresh rates with that said at 240hertz his precision was much higherso if he was a little closer to thetargetthe improvement in his consistency wouldhave definitely resulted in more killsso in conclusionyes high refresh rate gaming makes adifference it's the kind of thing we'vealways felt but it was never somethingthat we've quantifiednow i think there's still a lot morework to do investigating this maybe parttwo could involve different mousesensitivity
