hey smokers drug along here and todaywe're going to be taking a look at oh s- I've never used os/2 or OS to workpretty much ever except for maybe onetime I did when I was using it in avirtual machine a good ten years ago asyou know I've been having some problemwith hard disk availability issues Idon't have as many that I'm willing toformat so I've decided to just startusing some very small compact flashcards or I might just start switchingover to SD cards now the reason Ihaven't been doing this sooner is thatI've had the SD card adapter tied up ina Mac that I haven't been using at allfor a while now so I just pulled it outof there and I'm just gonna start usingit over here more oftensame goes for the SD card reader righthere that was pretty much tied up in theultimate das machine until the morerecent videos and then it's just beensitting around doing nothing so I'lljust use SD cards and compact flashcards until I run out of them and if Ineed more I'll see if I can buy somecheap ones up so I don't have to keepblowing through all these really olddrives that are just going to failanyway I'll take this fat16 formattedcompact flash card put it into thecompact flash id reader we'll go aheadand start out with os/2 2.1 none ofthese discs appear to be bootable in anyway I need to use the windows 98 startupdisk to actually get this up and runningso as you can see the 502 Meg partitionhere oh you gotta be me so isthere a setup in hereinstall basically the os/2 2.1 diskseems to just have the disk images ifyou wanted to burn them to floppy disksand that doesn't seem like a fun timebecause there are 11 disk images for OSto piss we can move it up - Oh s - orthree and see if that just has aninstaller we can run so this is os/2warp three and here we actually have abatch file called CD install which Iassume is allows you to install from theCD oh but it wants me to createinstallation diskettes anyway which ispretty dangerous considering that I'malready booting from a floppy disk nomatter I'll just find one of my disksthat already has a number written on itthis one it is - and just barely see theedge of the drive from the currentcamera angle yeah it's going hope therewasn't anything important on that now Igotta say props to IBM for using the PCspeaker to notify me when it's donewriting the disk it it beepedthis never happens like I'm usually awayfrom this while it's working like 90% ofdoing this is just waiting for solet's do the next oneoh by putting up saying how didthat happen oh hey IBM os/2installation version three you see thiswhy don't they do this at this pointWindows 98 or something and instead ofIBM just have like Microsoft so now itactually wants me to do the disk swapwhich I'll gladly do whoa hello so rightnow we're still only loading off thefloppy disk I'm assuming that it'ssetting up the Installer right now sothat it can copy all the files and needsto from the CD now I knowos/2 is pretty old but I know that it'snot that old in terms of how much spaceit's gonna need this is probablydue to it being a compact flash card ohwell now it's fine okay because now theCD is spinning up okay so we have twochoices easy installation intended formost users os/2 based on your currentcomputer setup so advanced experiencetechnical users so we'll do this to seeall the stuff there is to see let's dothe installing drivesyou can specify different driverpartition if you wantfdisk will be displayed let's go hereinstallation project can be formatted touse either the high performance filesystem or the fat file system huh thehigh performance file system I havenever heard of that so that means we gotto do it so we'll do thislet's go high performance okmay contain data we're okay with losingsaid data because there is nothing okay so my guess is that maybethis motherboard doesn't like hpfs oh noI wouldn'tshould be able to boot any other wayregardless the filesystem but let's tryreinstalling it with fat and see whathappens okay that really didn't takethat much time but so we've come to theend of the installation and we'rerestartingso there's a couple possibilities herecould be the motherboards to new couldbe doesn't like my compact flash cardreader so we could skip over all thisweirdness and instead just do work foryou know and since it would be thenewest option it would be the you knowmost compatible with all as manyhardware as possible you know so I guesswe'll just do that so since we're backon the 98 disk and since the drive isnow formatted with fat you can at leastlook at what it did let's say we gotsome here I mean there's stuffthere it's just apparently not bootableso we'll go back to D and go CD insteadwell unlike the other one this requiresthree disks so like we did before we'llwrite the disks okay pretty much justhad a food nap Jesus all right anywayman so now you can see here that redversion four instead of version threelooks almost no difference now I didn'tactually look at the date before becauseI'm really blind but yeah 1996 this is a1999 motherboard and so yeah let's justgo ahead and get this rolling now wearen't going to do the high performancefilesystem again because I really don'tthink it has you I don't think there'sthat much difference this is the sort ofdesktop background that I'm used toseeing or a variant of it anyway and byused to I mean the last time I saw itwhich really means screenshots and thelast virtual machine I made with it inthere was a failed drug one video whereI actually tried to installos/2 warp on a Windows 8 touchscreencomputer and it didn't end up workingbecause I had tomake those discs like like just wandjust to I had to make those with withvirtual disk files and I was doing thisin my truck in a parking lot to longstorymaybe I'll release the video someday Idon't know currently it is loading offof the floppy disk so I guess we'rewaiting okay disc 2 not consistent withlast time but ok now I had disc 3 inthere so now it's already seenso here it ismoment of truth now it's importantbecause it looks slightly different thanlast time so it gives me hope throughwork so I'm going to remove the disk itdoesn't say - and put another just getinit just says remove it so press Enter ohmy god oh man this is fine never didthose to warp stuff this fine well blastthing they can tries to actually use areal hard disk that is not compact flashdrive adapter now I could actually givethis guy a shot which is this is the SDcard to IDE that was able tosuccessfully boot up das and Windows 3.1at some point and this is a much newermotherboard it if it can do it on anolder motherboard then it I mostcertainly would work with this onebut I don't know this is sort of someunpredictable stuff thus far thiscompact flash adapter has only workedwith max now it technically is workingbecause it is detectable I can read andwrite files to it we've been able toformat it though s2 has been able todetect it the only thing I hasn't beenable to do yet is actually boot which isyou think would be kind of an importantpart of all this so I could you knowstart focusing my efforts on seeing if Ican just get this thing working which Iprobably should so what I'm gonna donext is I'm gonna see if I can justinstall it on a SD card see if we stillget this error now that could just be abunch of waste of time because if I wereto do this on a regular hard disk and Istill get this error then I'm it's goingto be like late at night and I'm goingto be very frustrated the problem withthese things is it just takes a lot oftime and a lot of disk swapping and it'sreally annoying so I'll just go one stepat a time and see if we can do this nextso it was actually able to recognizethat there is a drive see and we are onan SD card now a two gig SD card I'mgonna let it format it is highperformance and let it go and we'll letit install and see how far it'll get andsee if it's bootable remove the disk itjust get someone's corrected me on thisbefore ship so yeah I felt like thisbefore does actually detect it but nowwe have a different error still isfunctionally the same though well we'reback again and yep I'm gonna wipe outthe Whistler Drive with OS 2 as you cansee it has found Drive C so I want to gohere and use the high-performancefilesystem what the hell is this oh goddamn it oh you gotta be mewhoa there we go that's our problemright there soah man it takes so long to start up theinstall I have to install I have to putin three floppy disks every time I haveto start up the install that is reallynot fun at all like a really not fun soI have to get another Drive I don't know okay finally so this is with thesix gig I think it's six gig quantumfireball drive the older drive and we'remanaged to get this far where it says itneeds a minimum partition size monitorbags so it says it doesn't have anypartitions that's because it's NTFS theycan't read it so got some interesting going on here the partition mappingon drive 1 may be corrupted precedentkey the partition was at least hundredmegabytes must be said install wallpresident key star double primary sothis is a much better version of F diskthat I wish I could use more often sooptions spend you know look it's likeone of those third-party ones way betterso you can even install a boot manageroh my God look at this so I'm gonna wipeout Neptune windows 98 and whatever elseI need to really let go whatever's onthere it's just gonna have to go becauseit's either I do this now or this drivesgonna fail and I'll lose this date dataanyway so it why is installed bootmanager and often I really don't want toI guess I need to restart the computerdon't I I can't like - in order to applyitmakestar double I can't even stall bootmanager that's all I can do it'sliterally all I can do so I guess Igotta quit when this partition is setinstallable the installable indicatorwill be displayed in the status columnto set up partition installable it musthave a name a pop-up window will appeartoday in the partition if it does nothave a name well guess what that didn'thappen and there's only help exit andoptions menu and if I do help it justwell I guess I could read all this butthis doesn't really help me if Ican't actually do what it's giving theoption to do cuz I I can selectdifferent things we're go to differentplaces so both these are now no longeroptions press ENTER and the only thingyou can do is read the helped nothinglike I doso just left exit I bet you have to dothe whole thing over againthat means swapping out like three discsagain I keep putting this off I just letit sit in the background man cuz it justtakes so longoh and Stowe maybe it'll just restart itfrom oh oh did just restart the computerkept me in the illusion did I miss thisscreen before I wouldn't put it pastmyself but I'm just going to submit tothe predefined installation parametersinstead of selecting my own so ourdisk partitioning is complete must berestarted again not even funny okay sowe're about to hit the moment of truthbut before I continue there's just acouple things I want to talk about firstwe started out with trying to install ona compact flash card we completed theinstallation where the files were copiedbut it wouldn't boot did the exact samething with the SD card adapter didn'tboot my assumption is that it was eithersome issue with the motherboard beingold these being too new some sort ofhardware issue and that's why they'renot working but then it dawned on methat I'll wait maybe there's something Iforgot so I went in and I checked theboot flags on Linux in gparted to seewhether or not the partitions that wereinstalled on - were set to bootable setto active this one actually was this onewas not at that point I suppose if I setthis to bootable maybe this would thenwork I don't know but something isn'tquite right if this is still not workingeven when it has its boot flag set Idon't know what's causing the boot flagto get set because my assumption wouldbean installer that's supposed to bestreamed lined so that you wouldn't haveto mess with this sort of onanother computer to figure this out ordick around in the fdiskthat it would automatically set thepartition to active and bootable onceits installed it has to put in thebootloader in there right so I'm gonnaaccept the drive high performance allright so we're doing this on MechanicalTurk Bobby at this point I don't care Idon't care this what I'm just I'm justso done right now I just I I know I'mknown for not reading stuff and I get ina bunch of trouble and I waste hoursbecause I didn't read like one littlething and then there it's like oh videoand it's it's in a lot of ways it'spretty fresh it's frustrating for me asit is for you guys watching sometimesbut this is I guess I know why I didn'tdo freakin oh it's - man holy Iguess I'll try the final thing which issetting the boot flag on this - wellbootable and see if this worksso I'll be right back I don't have allthe libraries that let me see all of thedifferent file systems so well this isalready different I don't have activitylights but it's at least different wellone thing I could do is I could fiddlearound with that fdiskthing in the install and I know thereare some flags I can set up possiblyfrom there that it might be morefriendly with I guess that means I haveto start the installation for like aseventh or eighth time right we can justaccept the drive or we can specify adifferent driver partition which willopen F disk as you can see so as you cansee we have our partition here it'salmost two gigs and HP offence sopartition mapping on Drive one may becorruptedokay so right now it thinks that we'retrying to install something so if we gohere it doesn't give me an offer forboot manager ik the only thing I can dois delete the partition can I installboot Mandarin of this one megabyte hereno it's no flexibility whatsoever well Imean not really surprising because themajority of the space on the drive hasbeen utilized so that's I'm guessingthat's what it isyeah there's I was singing this fdiskpraises but I mean I'm sort of I putmyself into limitations here and I can'tuse all the features it is set to startable I can't set it to anything else Ican delete the partition and start allover there set installable and makestartled now it probably wouldn't havesaid stareable before if i had not setthe boot flag on linux like a coupleminutes ago so the problem is is that Ican't exit out of this not having to dothe reboot situation all over againwhy don't we delete the partition andsee what it does it doesn't let me doanything just like the other one there'sno difference here the only difference Ithink is gonna be it's not as big as theDRI the mechanical drive I used whichwas like a six gig drive and it mightlike this better I'm really I'm beingtotally honest I'm trying to figure myway through this partition with at least100 megabytes is set to installable wellI can't there's no there's no option todo that set install makes Tartabull likeyou don't you don't let me do the nextstep okay fine well let's fast-forwardto after I've already restarted and comeback to F disk on exactly the samescreen will it give me an option I canunderstand completely if it needs torestart after every step but at least beconsistent and don't specifically try to me over just to make my lifeterrible no here we are we were startedso here we have the option to createinstall a boom manager and create apartition now both of these things Iwould definitely like to do but I don'tknow if I can do multiple of theseoptions in one session withoutstarting so why don't we install theboot manager first okay so that becomesthe start of all you got the bootmanager and it takes up one megabyteokay I can okay now I can no longerinstall the boot manager but I do havean option to set startup value sodefaults well I don't have a thing in sowhen you go to that so for here createpartition this is tricky because thiscould actually be what's it upin the first place let's just trythousand megabytes just sort of undercutit a little bit create a startup freespace okay so okay we'll let me renamethat so I mean I it's got to be able toget by with like a gig I I mean I couldalso it's not formatted but I couldstill ID I want this to be startled Iwant this to boot so it can do thisbecause this is going into the bootsector of the drive this is it's alreadyproven that it's not good at making thisthe boot sector it's all ambiguousthought processes that are there notwell constructed I don't I don't have aperfect understanding of where that allis but if I put these things in thisorder and it works and at least Ifigured something out okay so f3 knowpartition was set to installable well Ican't so I can't set it installed we'llsee that so maybe I have to do itanother read I've reboot another rebootcycle so save and exit so let's fastforward to the fdisk int okaywhat the hell is its problem you needthree hundred fifty Meg's of hard diskspace there are no partitions of atleast this size on your hard disk welljust keep running I'm gonnaslate this is a thousand lessthan 350 maybe it Wonderlandwhat the okay so as you can see Istill can't set it as installablethought I suppose I can delete it andput it back on thereleast it gives me that flexibility let'smake it their primary partition start afree space so I don't see how this could up I mean maybe I had a problem ifit was higher than 500 Meg's it's nowunder 500 Meg'sI'm just guessing now maybe that's whatit's talking about is that it's onlylooking for partitions that are setinstallable and so even though it doeshave a 400 Meg thingamajig it it's notsadist our table so whatever it won'tset to installable I'm sorry installablecuz that's a thing because it's not setto install it doesn't even see it it'sblinded to it its presence its flightedto its presencewell now we're just hoping andFrank but that's not what it said itsays that there was no partitions thatbig on your disk like what if I hold onwhat if I make more partition can I justcreate more of them it's making let'smake another one can I make one that's Ineed one that was what 350 so let'slet's do 375 primary started free spaceokay now as you can see it doesn'tmatter because this one has the driveletter C this one does not what was theother one I need it to be at least 175this is totally gonna everything Ikeep changing things too many things175 primary partition to start a freespace I think I do probably one morenope that's it free partitions andthat's all you get so if I can I changethe start up I use now default can'tchange it save it exit okay well howlong let's go back again let's go tounusable free space alright okay so Ican switch I can assign the different Cpartition so that's consistent like butI still can't set installable okay ohnow I can set it installable what did Ichange I just filled it out what thewhere did that come from that wasn'tthere oh and I don't care let's just do itos 420 how about that there we gonot too shabby okayyou know I'm resigning yeah okay finallywe're back and it should be 100% happywith us I guess I have to accept becauseif I go to fdisk it's gonna show mefdisk as it is right now set upperfectly and I'll have to restart againso if I accept the drive and since oh itsays installed on Drive see we know thatdrive see is set to the 420 partition sothat should be fine so let's accept thatand let's go higher performance becausewe got it we got to keep it interestingsomehow okay so now we're doing yetanother install we've partition our SDcard a lot I don't know if I hopesI'm feeling this I think this is gonnawork dude mmm it's like the wave that'sZen right there guys so now since theboot manager is installed we're gonnahave something in the boot sector of thedrive for it to grab onto once we dothat we can point it to our partitionthat we want experience that reallywhat's the okay well at least I canwe do have this alright oh my god well Imean at least it's giving me an optionto like go back and rethink my life alittle bit you see this there's noother way this could up and failthere's no other way we're it says bootthis and I pressed it and that's what it does like I'm sorry like this isthat's how it is so the only other thingthat I can think of is I mean and thisis not this is not like a motherboardgenerated because sometimes if youhave a blank harddrive it'll sayoperatingnot found or something like that this issomething I've never seen beforeselected partition is not formatted hitany key this is from the boot loader soit's definitely seeing the boot loaderit's that is the proper partition I knowI have other partitions on there but itdoesn't matter well I've met my wit'send here now one thing I can try is Ican try plugging the thingy into anothermachine see if it'll boot there it'sclearly it's not booting here you knowwhat I'm gonna have to move this over tomy 486 the reason for that is it's moregeared for 486 the operating system isthe problem is is I don't have a systemwith a CD drive set up on my 486 it's apain in the ass but who is it gonna beable to boot off of this I'm not sureit's not like I'd be able to installinto a hard-disk anyway it was crashingwhen I did that Oh time to clear thetable as you can see there is a lot of there we're going to be replacingthat with 486 before I tear this wholething down and unplug the SD cardI'll check with hyerin's boot CD withgparted to take it off look at thisdevice information this is importanthere see us how it says head 16 sectorscylinders now remember how I had tomanually plug this information in on the486 machine sure we take a picture ofthat so with that information it shouldbe enough for us to actually have thatdevice be detectable and possiblybootable on the 486 just a matter ofplugging in that information so let'sskip to that now okay so we'll put thison the top one oh hey not bad it'sperfect that's precisely the size of theSD card Hey oh my god it founditooh yes oh yes finally oh my god ohthat's all it took yet to get just anolder of your computer and it worksthat's all it was and this is off of theSD card well let's not celebrate tooquickly it hasn't finished booting yetso well I'll just wait for it to startoff this could take a whileyeah premature celebration all right I'mstarting I guess I could put more RAM init but it only has eight Meg's RAM inthis thing it needs twelve minimum torun almost to warp but guess whatOS warp 3 only needs four do I reallywant to use the other computer toinstall os/2 warp three all over againgo through all that disk swapping allover again oh my god holymaybe I'll try and find some more RAM Igot some more RAM in there I'm not sureit's enough all didn't hate it stilleight megabytes let's try anothertrip boss sex another sticker I am oh my godokay so well here I have a another 46machine that I got recently it has avery old CD drive yeah pretty dang oldand it actually has an is a CD card thatsupposedly we're gonna use to installwarp 3 because it didn't work for usbefore so try that this only needs fourmegabytes of RAM and this only has yetagain eight megabytes I only have onemegabyte modules of Sims and there'sonly at max eight slots so it's kind ofannoying so well over this again I don'tknow if that is actually supposed to bemotorized or anythingbut let's go ahead and try and power iton I forgot to plug in the monitor okayso I actually forgot to put a VGA cardin this so that's why I wasn't ready soI apparently stripped the VGA card outof this because I was trying to do my 46project like several videos ago nowlet's try it it doesn't light up forsome reason but it is on someinteresting stuff here all three of thelights are onapparently this doesn't work back theold trident ah have the IDE cablebackwards it makes a PC speaker noisefor every what 11 what the wellgood news is that means that this willwork now maybe I don't know how its nowaddressing that much RAM every singleRam stick I tried is one megabyte nowsudden we have more that means there's arandom rogue one and there looks liketwo makes okay well fine we'll playalong with this game it just means thatI need to manually put the stuff inagain and huh interesting it actuallyhas a CMOS battery that works that'sweirdperfect and we got a floppy disk drivemeet it so now it'll reboot and if we'rereally lucky it'll boot yeah listen tothisand it detects it oh my god Oh is toanother 486 successfully booting on withit and it crashes oh we got closewe got kind of close let's switch backto this again apparently this VGA carddoesn't clear the screen after it printsits little information there so os/2 andit crashes I just spent 20 minutes 25minutesshuffling ram aroundI forgot that there's different speedsof RAM there's like 60 nanoseconds 70nanosecond or other stuff like that theweird thing is when I mix the 70 withthe 60 and I got 20 megabytes out ofnowhere I was at 3 megabytes I added twosticks I still had three megabytes Iadded a 60 and the suddenly I'm at 20 Idon't understand how this addressesI guess it's for two time you have tohave them in pairs of four maybe andthen it addresses them so I have morethan enough to do OS work for so itshould just boot now ahthat's a beauty there there's the screennow I'm gonna wait will it actually getpast its I don't know okay I found thisscreen somewhat deceptive actually ofgetting activity lights from the SD cardyou can see a little blinking on themiddle light there a little bit ofactivity there and I'm actually got someactivity from the cd-rom drive itactually did blink and light up now thewrong discin there so it's not really gonna helpthe warp four-disc is not in there but Idon't know if that's keeping it fromstarting up if it is I'm just going toswap that out immediately so that we canrestart this and hopefully it will workbecause five years to boot but here weare I don't even have the four fourdiscs in the CD drivewe got mouse movement over cereal oh mygod you know realize I'm waiting a weekfor thisoh I move this so this is the the firsttime set up I guess and the I saw mycamera sucks like what really would be agood brightness level like what oh mygod oh I can't believe it so Icouldn't even install it with thiscomputer to be honest I installed itwith the AMD k-6 motherboard and thenmoved the SD card over now if you lookhere you can see the activity and itjust stopped right when I lifted it upthat's greatthere you can see it blink a little bitso it's definitely loading off of it andit's stuff changing in the back yeah soit's definitely going to turn it alongnot very fast for stats for sure andfinally after all this time os/2warp 4 on a 486 with 20 megabytes of RAMWow okayso here we have a bunch of crap for somereason it thinks I'm in the UnitedKingdom Oh God well you know let's justleave it I don't really want to messwith that PS - Wow apparently we canchange him display settings although Idon't really want to because I don'twant it to off I really don't itactually detects the cd-rom drive whichit detects is a Mitsumi oh no I'm noteven with thisthat is a Windows 3.1 disaster waitingto happen so it detected this itdetected the sound blaster or that'sjust a placeholder I'm not sure advancedpower management PCMCIA support I likethis little clock pointer here oh my do not install the printer pleasegod nothis is with auto white balance turnedon and the screen looks perfect but thebackground is now yellow yeah we're justgonna use this this looks way betterdisk space available needed 75 okay sowe're not even done installing itapparently CDdrive working oh my god this is going tobe the slowest this is the oldest seenyou drive I've ever used the 33megahertz what and now it's having to doan installation over again we alreadycopied the plug that in there oh mygod it's not workor they're just not ejectable the buttondoesn't work because now I'm gonnanarrow up here saying I can't reload theNT loader or something a there's nothing in there the is going on oh it's trying to bootthis I'm stupid well now it's gonna take40 years to startup so a couple ofthings I learned here turns out that forsome reason it can't load in audio CDsbut it can load in a data CD likesomething like this this is the os/2warp CD here you can see files that arein there so the other problem that I raninto is that the CD drive the Caddybased CD Drive that I have in thecomputer right now actually isproprietary and it has a proprietary isa card so I can't use other IDE driveswith it but since it's able to actuallyread files on here I have no reason tobelieve there's something wrong with itand no reason to use another Drive otherthan this one so if that's the case thenwhat other stuff can we load up on ithow about mega MIDIfeel like that thing's gonna be prettyprone to breaking oh man this locks upso frequently hey it can read it it'sreading it a lot should come as asurprise no one the files are not open abowl but they are visible so you canactually see that there's files on therenow I'm probably just wasting my timehere my mind kind of goes blank when Istarted using this computer because it'sso slow that you click a simple buttonand then it just sits there and waitsfor an unknown amount of time and then Ijust walk away and come back and be likeoh yeah I was in the middle of doingsomething yes pretty bad and the problemis is that it takes so long to do thefirst thing that it stacks up commandsand then you have to keep clicking todismiss all the commands you started ohit's not goodjesus christso finally I managed to get all thewindows closed so here I've got a diskwith an image on it can we load a bitmapimage really scraping the bottle andbarrels to figure out something I can dohere to show off it being a usableoperating system oh hey we've gotsomething here and it's it's respectingthe hidden files that are on the floppywhich would be like system volumeinformation and stuff like that okayso are you serious Wow okay it's a 900kilobyte bitmap it's about 400 by 500 orsomething like that for its my channellogo like it's okay I was not expectingthat oh that's right because it'sopening it in the icon editor which isonly supposed to open icons no wonderthat didn't work hmm okay well I meanthat sure was interesting well now Igotta wait for it to close us out so Iwas expecting to wait and have thisclosed itself out butapparently it is lied to me it actuallydid load the image in except it's only aportion of it that it can display thisbetter be maximized I hope that's maxhonest Oh waiting again so looks like Igot lucky that was the maximize buttonand it actually can load in more than itsaid it could now of course you can seethis dithered - all hell but it istechnically working so I did just clickI I really don't know quite howbottlenecked this is like I know thisprocessor slow but I didn't know it waslike this slow and I guess this is sortof like running Windows 95 on a 486 Iguess oh okay alright
