of my</text><text start="138.78" dur="4.98">normal everyday HP Workstation</text><text start="141.959" dur="4.201">the one that I do most of my work on</text><text start="143.76" dur="4.74">everyone just browsing the internet even</text><text start="146.16" dur="3.96">just after boot up which draws a lot of</text><text start="148.5" dur="6.36">power and idling</text><text start="150.12" dur="6.78">which roughly is about 146 Watts</text><text start="154.86" dur="4.08">um it&amp;#39;s too much it&amp;#39;s something it has</text><text start="156.9" dur="4.14">to give</text><text start="158.94" dur="4.439">again I&amp;#39;m still on the</text><text start="161.04" dur="3.839">HP workstation</text><text start="163.379" dur="5">and we&amp;#39;re going to have a look at the</text><text start="164.879" dur="7.261">the CPU speed</text><text start="168.379" dur="5.041">dev.cpu.0 not frequency and it tells us</text><text start="172.14" dur="5.879">it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="173.42" dur="7.78">2927 and if we have a look at</text><text start="178.019" dur="4.621">um the overall system uh in a little bit</text><text start="181.2" dur="4.94">more detail</text><text start="182.64" dur="3.5">so it&amp;#39;s Dev Dot</text><text start="186.5" dur="7.18">cpu.0 and there we go</text><text start="190.44" dur="4.98">and it&amp;#39;s running about 50 degrees the</text><text start="193.68" dur="3.02">highest it got was 103 that&amp;#39;s</text><text start="195.42" dur="4.14">interesting</text><text start="196.7" dur="4.959">and just generally a little bit of</text><text start="199.56" dur="4.92">information</text><text start="201.659" dur="6.901">about the fastest it&amp;#39;s going</text><text start="204.48" dur="6.72">uh it&amp;#39;s 2927 so that&amp;#39;s probably about as</text><text start="208.56" dur="5.36">fast as I can get this one to go on the</text><text start="211.2" dur="6.24">stock cooler there&amp;#39;s not an overclock</text><text start="213.92" dur="6.879">option on these HP machines</text><text start="217.44" dur="6.019">and if you&amp;#39;re on an md5 test</text><text start="220.799" dur="7.5">it gets done in</text><text start="223.459" dur="6.761">2.01 seconds and 473.16</text><text start="228.299" dur="3.36">maybe about</text><text start="230.22" dur="3.78">per second</text><text start="231.659" dur="3.901">this I think it&amp;#39;s maybe baked if it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="234" dur="2.819">not my bike please correct me in the</text><text start="235.56" dur="3.72">comments down below</text><text start="236.819" dur="3.721">that&amp;#39;s not too bad and it should be on a</text><text start="239.28" dur="4.319">machine like this</text><text start="240.54" dur="5.22">and indeed we&amp;#39;ll have a look at some</text><text start="243.599" dur="4.86">screen fetch nope we&amp;#39;ll have a look at</text><text start="245.76" dur="4.32">Neil fetch uh yeah it doesn&amp;#39;t show up on</text><text start="248.459" dur="4.98">this gray background but you get the</text><text start="250.08" dur="5.159">idea it&amp;#39;s some it&amp;#39;s got twin uh Xeon X</text><text start="253.439" dur="3.721">5570s</text><text start="255.239" dur="3.661">uh there&amp;#39;s two with four calls so it</text><text start="257.16" dur="2.72">gives me a total of eight cars running</text><text start="258.9" dur="4.14">at</text><text start="259.88" dur="6.52">2.926 gigahertz so again it&amp;#39;s not the</text><text start="263.04" dur="6.48">fastest and with a GeForce GTX 750</text><text start="266.4" dur="6.359">and 48 gigabytes of RAM</text><text start="269.52" dur="5.82">but it uses up a lot of electric so in</text><text start="272.759" dur="4.561">my quest for something leaner or</text><text start="275.34" dur="3.48">something more economical</text><text start="277.32" dur="4.02">I&amp;#39;ll turn to something which I&amp;#39;ve been</text><text start="278.82" dur="4.14">covering since 2017 and that&amp;#39;s a</text><text start="281.34" dur="3.78">Raspberry Pi especially the Raspberry Pi</text><text start="282.96" dur="4.799">400 it&amp;#39;s an excellent machine and</text><text start="285.12" dur="4.859">something which I feel will uh do the</text><text start="287.759" dur="3.72">job very nicely and FreeBSD runs on it</text><text start="289.979" dur="4.321">very well too if you have a look at any</text><text start="291.479" dur="5.701">of these videos uh you can see how I</text><text start="294.3" dur="4.86">installed and how you can use it I&amp;#39;ll</text><text start="297.18" dur="3.78">leave some links in the description box</text><text start="299.16" dur="3.78">down below this is not an installation</text><text start="300.96" dur="4.38">video or a how-to I&amp;#39;m just gonna simply</text><text start="302.94" dur="3.24">try and show you how to get the best out</text><text start="305.34" dur="2.52">of it</text><text start="306.18" dur="3.299">and indeed if we have a look at the</text><text start="307.86" dur="3.839">Raspberry Pi 400 power draw I&amp;#39;m sorry</text><text start="309.479" dur="3.841">about the lack of light it&amp;#39;s the</text><text start="311.699" dur="2.881">lightning come on this device so I&amp;#39;m</text><text start="313.32" dur="3.12">gonna have to buy a new one I think and</text><text start="314.58" dur="7.679">as you can see It&amp;#39;ll draw in roughly</text><text start="316.44" dur="7.38">about 5.4 5.3 watts and that&amp;#39;s on idle</text><text start="322.259" dur="3.841">so not too bad</text><text start="323.82" dur="4.92">and we&amp;#39;re switching over to the</text><text start="326.1" dur="6.18">Raspberry Pi 400 and if we run the sync</text><text start="328.74" dur="5.959">commands as last time so syscontrol or</text><text start="332.28" dur="5.94">cctl</text><text start="334.699" dur="6.241">dev.cpu.0 Dot freak</text><text start="338.22" dur="2.72">frequency</text><text start="341.22" dur="6.9">you can see the Raspberry Pi 400 is</text><text start="344.58" dur="5.52">idling at 600 which is really not ideal</text><text start="348.12" dur="4.859">because the default speed for the</text><text start="350.1" dur="5.879">Raspberry Pi 400 is I think is 1800 the</text><text start="352.979" dur="5.94">stock Raspberry Pi 4 is 1500 but the</text><text start="355.979" dur="5.341">Raspberry Pi 400 has a better heat sink</text><text start="358.919" dur="4.56">and comes already kind of like</text><text start="361.32" dur="5.099">overclocked if you are running on 1800</text><text start="363.479" dur="5.041">so and the reason for this is FreeBSD</text><text start="366.419" dur="5.101">doesn&amp;#39;t it doesn&amp;#39;t put it into its fast</text><text start="368.52" dur="4.5">mod as it were so I&amp;#39;m going to show you</text><text start="371.52" dur="5.459">several ways that we can get the best</text><text start="373.02" dur="6">out of Raspberry Pi using FreeBSD and</text><text start="376.979" dur="4.56">the first few ways is going to be</text><text start="379.02" dur="4.019">perhaps the um the most sensible way and</text><text start="381.539" dur="4.5">the last way is a little bit more</text><text start="383.039" dur="4.801">extreme but it&amp;#39;s one that I use and it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="386.039" dur="4.38">rock solid stable so we&amp;#39;ll have a look</text><text start="387.84" dur="5.579">to fix the idling problem in the</text><text start="390.419" dur="4.921">Raspberry Pi so it&amp;#39;s not idling at 600</text><text start="393.419" dur="5.541">all the time and therefore feeling slow</text><text start="395.34" dur="3.62">so first thing we&amp;#39;re going to rule</text><text start="399" dur="6.66">and we can issue a sys control</text><text start="402.36" dur="5.1">Dev dot CPU</text><text start="405.66" dur="4.92">dot zero</text><text start="407.46" dur="6.179">frequency equals and now we can actually</text><text start="410.58" dur="5.64">specify 1800 and that will tell the</text><text start="413.639" dur="4.861">Raspberry Pi to run 1800 which is its</text><text start="416.22" dur="3.9">stock speed and if we just do the</text><text start="418.5" dur="6.66">command again look there is it&amp;#39;s running</text><text start="420.12" dur="6.72">at 1800 running at 40 40.2 Celsius</text><text start="425.16" dur="3.78">we&amp;#39;re just going to drop it back down to</text><text start="426.84" dur="3.479">the slow speed again because I want to</text><text start="428.94" dur="2.879">show you something else</text><text start="430.319" dur="5.481">if we</text><text start="431.819" dur="3.981">do the md5 test</text><text start="438.08" dur="5.559">and eventually it will get there it&amp;#39;s a</text><text start="440.88" dur="6.12">lot slower than the HP</text><text start="443.639" dur="4.581">he&amp;#39;s done in 9.62 seconds</text><text start="447" dur="4.979">with</text><text start="448.22" dur="6.16">99.07 per second</text><text start="451.979" dur="4.5">if we ratchet it up back up to 1800 and</text><text start="454.38" dur="4.62">do the same test again</text><text start="456.479" dur="4.44">obviously we&amp;#39;re going to see it halved</text><text start="459" dur="3.599">and there we go well just just actually</text><text start="460.919" dur="5.28">by Third really</text><text start="462.599" dur="5.94">so it&amp;#39;s 3.19 seconds and 298</text><text start="466.199" dur="4.44">0.48</text><text start="468.539" dur="4.201">so there is a marked improvement of</text><text start="470.639" dur="4.321">course as you would expect but we can do</text><text start="472.74" dur="3.84">better than that we can push the pi a</text><text start="474.96" dur="3.239">little bit further I think okay we&amp;#39;re</text><text start="476.58" dur="3.3">going to drop it down again to show you</text><text start="478.199" dur="3.9">what uh</text><text start="479.88" dur="4.379">second way we can do this so instead of</text><text start="482.099" dur="5.16">using syscontrol to pump up the speed we</text><text start="484.259" dur="4.621">can add power D to the rc.com for it to</text><text start="487.259" dur="3.961">start up automatically when the system</text><text start="488.88" dur="5.159">boots</text><text start="491.22" dur="4.379">so we added it to the rc.com for now and</text><text start="494.039" dur="3.541">we can start the service now if you</text><text start="495.599" dur="4.88">don&amp;#39;t really want to rebuild so service</text><text start="497.58" dur="2.899">power D restart</text><text start="501.3" dur="4.799">oh never mind it&amp;#39;s it&amp;#39;s not running but</text><text start="504.18" dur="5.34">it&amp;#39;s running now I&amp;#39;m not used to power D</text><text start="506.099" dur="6.36">running so that&amp;#39;s that&amp;#39;s the</text><text start="509.52" dur="4.56">most sensible two ways we can do it but</text><text start="512.459" dur="3.601">we&amp;#39;re gonna have a look at the perhaps a</text><text start="514.08" dur="3.839">less sensible and you do this at your</text><text start="516.06" dur="3.479">own risk I mean but the pie should be</text><text start="517.919" dur="2.881">fine if you do this but you know you</text><text start="519.539" dur="3.481">might cross the system or it might be</text><text start="520.8" dur="4.47">unstable in which case drop it down or</text><text start="523.02" dur="5.6">don&amp;#39;t do this</text><text start="525.27" dur="3.35">[Music]</text><text start="529.5" dur="6.54">so if you have a look at near fetch now</text><text start="532.7" dur="5.579">and you can see we&amp;#39;re on the Raspberry</text><text start="536.04" dur="2.239">Pi</text><text start="538.44" dur="7.8">we&amp;#39;re just going to assist control</text><text start="541.88" dur="7.18">dev.cpu dot zero dot free and we&amp;#39;re done</text><text start="546.24" dur="5.34">we&amp;#39;re running at 21.47 how did we get</text><text start="549.06" dur="4.56">this far well first I don&amp;#39;t know if you</text><text start="551.58" dur="4.98">need to do this but I always tend to do</text><text start="553.62" dur="4.86">this automatically I always have power D</text><text start="556.56" dur="3.66">started okay so I&amp;#39;ll always I always</text><text start="558.48" dur="4.08">like to have power to go in as a default</text><text start="560.22" dur="5.1">uh so it gets a machine full speed then</text><text start="562.56" dur="4.92">we go into the MS-DOS partition that</text><text start="565.32" dur="4.94">every Raspberry Pi has well especially</text><text start="567.48" dur="2.78">if you boot up on it</text><text start="574.56" dur="4.1">and in that there should be a file</text><text start="577.56" dur="5.42">called</text><text start="578.66" dur="7.9">config.txt we need to edit config.txt</text><text start="582.98" dur="5.44">and in there you will see there are some</text><text start="586.56" dur="3.779">entries that I&amp;#39;ve added already there is</text><text start="588.42" dur="6.539">arm underscore boost</text><text start="590.339" dur="7.201">GPU mem over voltage 6 Fast Turbo and</text><text start="594.959" dur="4.741">free you can see and GPU frequency now</text><text start="597.54" dur="4.26">you can add</text><text start="599.7" dur="4.56">these if you wish you can drop the over</text><text start="601.8" dur="4.14">voltage down to four if you wish is</text><text start="604.26" dur="3.78">entirely up to you experiment you find</text><text start="605.94" dur="3.24">one that&amp;#39;s stable for your system well</text><text start="608.04" dur="4.44">bear in mind that this is for the</text><text start="609.18" dur="5.099">Raspberry Pi 400.</text><text start="612.48" dur="4.32">um HDMI safe is something which you</text><text start="614.279" dur="4.62">should always uh comment out because</text><text start="616.8" dur="5.84">then it makes your display</text><text start="618.899" dur="5.94">not too big if you have that default</text><text start="622.64" dur="4">it&amp;#39;s going to look weird and too large</text><text start="624.839" dur="4.041">so we always comment that out and you&amp;#39;ll</text><text start="626.64" dur="2.24">be fine</text><text start="628.98" dur="3.12">uh well at the moment I&amp;#39;m running a</text><text start="630.42" dur="4.74">temperature of 46 so that&amp;#39;s only about</text><text start="632.1" dur="8.179">six degrees uh higher with a top speed</text><text start="635.16" dur="5.119">of 2147 and doing the md5 test</text><text start="641.04" dur="6.78">brings at 2.69 and</text><text start="644.54" dur="6.58">353.91 a second which I think compares</text><text start="647.82" dur="6.84">favorably to what we had on the HP and</text><text start="651.12" dur="6.36">as you can see on the HP we had 2.01</text><text start="654.66" dur="6.179">seconds and on The Supercharged Pi it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="657.48" dur="6.12">2.69 so that&amp;#39;s not that different</text><text start="660.839" dur="4.981">speed we had 473</text><text start="663.6" dur="5.7">and 300 and</text><text start="665.82" dur="6.78">53 not bad uh on the stock Raspberry Pi</text><text start="669.3" dur="7.02">was 9.62 with 99 and even on a full</text><text start="672.6" dur="6">speed normal uh speed Raspberry Pi 3.19</text><text start="676.32" dur="4.139">so we haven&amp;#39;t done too bad at all so</text><text start="678.6" dur="4.62">yeah very nice</text><text start="680.459" dur="4.5">and you know the Raspberry Pi 400</text><text start="683.22" dur="3.6">running with these little over clocks</text><text start="684.959" dur="3.721">you can either do the the normal one to</text><text start="686.82" dur="4.68">save ones or you can go for the more</text><text start="688.68" dur="5.399">extreme and I found that the extreme</text><text start="691.5" dur="4.92">ones are very stable and it gives you a</text><text start="694.079" dur="5.341">system running FreeBSD which</text><text start="696.42" dur="5.039">I don&amp;#39;t know if not that far off the HP</text><text start="699.42" dur="3.72">there are some limitations of course</text><text start="701.459" dur="4.141">there&amp;#39;s some caveats and one of them is</text><text start="703.14" dur="4.86">video editing is really</text><text start="705.6" dur="6.06">um inaugural non-tool proper Graphics</text><text start="708" dur="5.279">drivers are implemented and if it</text><text start="711.66" dur="4.679">matters to you then</text><text start="713.279" dur="4.68">Wi-Fi support for the inbuilt Wi-Fi</text><text start="716.339" dur="4.62">although there are ways around that if</text><text start="717.959" dur="6.421">you want to use Ethernet or which I do</text><text start="720.959" dur="4.32">or you want to use a dongle for an older</text><text start="724.38" dur="3.36">um</text><text start="725.279" dur="4.861">standard but</text><text start="727.74" dur="4.44">saying all that I think FreeBSD on the</text><text start="730.14" dur="4.379">Raspberry Pi is a very</text><text start="732.18" dur="4.98">um very nice place to be</text><text start="734.519" dur="5.82">it uses</text><text start="737.16" dur="5.16">so much less what 30 times less 30 times</text><text start="740.339" dur="4.921">less wattage</text><text start="742.32" dur="4.139">than a uh than my workstation and just</text><text start="745.26" dur="5.22">idling</text><text start="746.459" dur="6.56">that&amp;#39;s uh to me that alone is enough to</text><text start="750.48" dur="5.82">swap I mean I&amp;#39;ve got a whole room full</text><text start="753.019" dur="5.44">uh of computers running for the kids and</text><text start="756.3" dur="4.32">now that&amp;#39;s gonna have to change as well</text><text start="758.459" dur="3.481">maybe I can give them tablets maybe I</text><text start="760.62" dur="3.48">can pick up a bunch of Raspberry Pi</text><text start="761.94" dur="4.139">files I don&amp;#39;t know but the way that the</text><text start="764.1" dur="3.96">prices are rising for electric and</text><text start="766.079" dur="3.901">there&amp;#39;s no indication that they&amp;#39;re going</text><text start="768.06" dur="3.66">to come down anytime soon so I think we</text><text start="769.98" dur="4.32">all have to change we&amp;#39;ll all have to</text><text start="771.72" dur="4.919">change the way we do things regarding</text><text start="774.3" dur="5.219">energy and power and so using Raspberry</text><text start="776.639" dur="4.921">Pi and previously of course it gives me</text><text start="779.519" dur="4.021">your miles may vary depends on what you</text><text start="781.56" dur="4.14">want to do your computer but it gives me</text><text start="783.54" dur="5.039">for everyday use for browsing internet</text><text start="785.7" dur="5.46">for doing shopping Etc a very very cost</text><text start="788.579" dur="6.06">efficient and stable and very beautiful</text><text start="791.16" dur="5.22">system anyway this was only a small</text><text start="794.639" dur="3.601">video it really wasn&amp;#39;t a how-to it was</text><text start="796.38" dur="3.78">more of a prices</text><text start="881.279" dur="5.701">come down anyway at the back of the pie</text><text start="884.22" dur="4.5">we&amp;#39;ve got the ethernet cable</text><text start="886.98" dur="3.96">got a mouse cable</text><text start="888.72" dur="3.72">they&amp;#39;ve got USB extender and a sound</text><text start="890.94" dur="3.36">dongle at the end with the headphone</text><text start="892.44" dur="3.48">cable coming out</text><text start="894.3" dur="3.12">we&amp;#39;ve got the drive the USB storage</text><text start="895.92" dur="4.8">which is running off</text><text start="897.42" dur="5.659">the USBC power cable and that&amp;#39;s the HDMI</text><text start="900.72" dur="2.359">cable</text><text start="904.32" dur="4.68">and I will be using this as a sole</text><text start="907.139" dur="3.601">computer for a whole week the other</text><text start="909" dur="4.699">computer is packed up monitors are off</text><text start="910.74" surprisingly there&amp;#39;s not a</text><text start="1096.86" dur="3.78">lot going on here but it feels very</text><text start="1098.6" dur="4.92">laggy no more laggy than it does using</text><text start="1100.64" dur="4.26">raspberry pios itself but the same</text><text start="1103.52" dur="3.3">performance</text><text start="1104.9" dur="4.98">um simple screen recorder is recording</text><text are</text><text start="2237.04" dur="3.42">so I&amp;#39;ll just fast forward all this</text><text start="2238.48" dur="4.02">because it does take a while</text><text start="2240.46" dur="4.139">and basically the</text><text start="2242.5" dur="4.92">big bad villain who is going to come and</text><text start="2244.599" dur="5.161">kill no and the hero turns up says he</text><text start="2247.42" dur="4.74">can free them the villain turns up they</text><text start="2249.76" dur="3.24">escape he gets blown up they get on a</text><text start="2252.16" dur="3.54">plane</text><text start="2253" dur="5.04">and when he arrives</text><text start="2255.7" dur="4.8">someone is missing is a point-and-click</text><text start="2258.04" dur="4.92">adventure where you look for Clues work</text><text game</text><text start="2318.82" dur="3.96">is way too complicated for me but if</text><text start="2321.28" dur="4.14">you&amp;#39;re into your strategy and real-time</text><text start="2322.78" dur="4.26">games I think this will actually uh this</text><text start="2325.42" dur="3.06">will do the job as you can see from my</text><text start="2327.04" dur="4.079">gameplay I have no idea what I&amp;#39;m doing</text><text start="2328.48" dur="4.32">but then again I didn&amp;#39;t in the Star Trek</text><text start="2331.119" dur="4.021">games it used to be again in the 1980s</text><text dur="5.76">goes but the closer they can get to you</text><text start="2483.22" dur="5.879">killing them will result in some nice</text><text start="2486.76" dur="4.02">uh some really crystals that you
