hello everybody and welcome back toanother video now in today's episodewe're going to be taking a look at ibmos2 version 2.1 now os2 is somethingthat we've not really talked a whole lotabout on this channel but it's somethingi definitely want to dive into more ibelieve the only video we've done on os2is this video on warp 4 that i made backin late 2019 but i've never unboxed aphysical copy of it before but thatchanges today because this right here asyou can see is a box copy of version 2.1and it was recently donated to me by agood friend of mine who also gave methiscopy of os2 warp version 3 which we willbe taking a look at in a future episodehopefully but we're going to focus onthis copy we have here todayso this version was pretty significantin the os2 lineup because it was thefirst version that was released or notthe first version version 2.0 was thefirst version released after the ibmmicrosoft split because a little briefhistory os 2 started as a jointdevelopment project between ibm andmicrosoft and then became an ibmexclusive thing after microsoft saw howwell windows was doing that's a reallybrief bite-sized version of the historythere's a lot more we could go into butthat's honestly better saved for anothervideo so yeah 2.0 first version to comeafter that split it was also the first32-bit version of os2 and 2.1 cameshortly after sometime in the early1990s yeah let's just go over to theback here so we got a screenshot of itit says os2 makes your pc easier to usethan ever before you got this awesomelooking ibm mouse here it's captured thefuture and made it available today wowno way man and then you got your systemrequirements on the side here now we'redefinitely going to be installing thison a system that isthat far exceeds these systemrequirements it's going to be the 98 pcuh but yeah we'll get to that in amoment so right here what i love aboutthis too is ibm included both the threeand a half inch diskettes and the fiveand a quarter inch diskettes right inthe box whichever one you needed you hadmicrosoft uh did not do that umwe are missing unfortunately the cdthat you need these are just essentiallyboot diskettes if we take them out herei'll show youwe've only got two of them in here sothere's no way the entire os is going tofit on these two so that's where the cdcomes inso this right here is diskette1 and thenyou've got right here the theinstallation diskette first of all whyare these labels likethey're like flipped around like whywould that's okay to be completelyhonest totally being open here i amcertainly notthat familiar with os2 i mean i knowwhat it is i've messed around with itbefore but i've never used it as mydaily operating system so we're going tobe kind of exploring this versiontogether here today because i've neverusedversion 2.1 before in fact i think warp4 is the only version i've ever messedaround with make your wordsunforgettable special savings from adobesystems man look at that logo dude oh mygosh that's actually really cool lookinga great deal on type from adobe systemso they're probably selling fontsprobably let's see here now that youhave a copy of os 2 software from ibmall your documents will look moreprofessional that's because adobe typemanager software is built right into theoperating system so you can scale typeto any size and get sharp clear textyeah it's got all sorts of differentfonts right here so there you go adobetypeset packages for just 59. you gotyour card here i guess you could mail inuh man i was not expecting that yeah ijust always love these uh these thingsthat come in the package along with thesoftware these like essentiallyadvertisements because it's really neatto see like i have never seen the oldadobe logo that just looks really reallycoolso yeah that's thatthis right herei believe is a uh is an installationguide i think this was printed off idon't think this came in here originallyum but yeah it's a little installationguide we may very well refer back tothis at some point who knows all righthere it looks like we've got a businessreply card for computer world get 10weekly newspapers for the price of onespecial offer for ibm product users nowright here this is one of the coolestthings in here it's the ibm play smartsave big with the os 2 solutions packit's a little booklet um thatthe platform of choice yeah don't youwish ibm don't you wish it was theplatform of choice um this is reallyneat to flip through because it's allsorts of ads and little blurbs aboutyou know os2 thingsgreat news the ideal companion the os 2version 2.1 is the user's guidancetutorial the workplace shell or os2 theworkplace cell version 2.1 you don'thave to marry your mainokaywow we're really going like from zero to100 there get it off the boardintroducing ibm os2's bulletin boardsystem i don't think i've ever seen ared ibm logo like that before heycoreldraw we took a look at a version ofthis for windows extended services foros2 os2 the limitman well yeah there you go we'll setthat aside before i spend the entirevideo on it and right hereand let's just flip this over here andjust get everything else out specialoffer 30 rebate from ibm offer expireseptember 14th 1993. dang it i wanted toget my 30 bucks ibm get the latest onos2 now on compuserve oh mancheck that out so is this like is this acomp user event is that what this isyeah compuserve information service soit's just a real os 2 branded oh it islike you know it's an ibm printed thingbut it's like a like an ad forcompuserve independent vendor leaguewhat the what is this is this like acatalogoh yeah it isit's a catalog with booklets andguidesvhs tape oh i want that man os2productivity vhs oh my gosh look at thismerch holy cow you got t-shirts anumbrella a sweatshirt oh my gosh thefloppy disk calculator i've seen one ofthese before i don't know if it was os2branded but i've seen something likethis before like a floppy disk it'sshaped like a floppy disk but it's acalculator you've got hats hereoh my gosh i would love to get some ofthis stuff i do have an os 2 keychainthis stuff is just i mean this is likethis is content right here man this is awhole video we could do just goingthrough this stuffbut yeah we should probably move on tothe actual software but wait let's takea look at this stuff first order now andsave fifty percent on suggested retailprice uh for some other piece ofsoftware cytron back up your os2 systemtodayand here's your registration card whichwas mailed in you got your licenseinformation your book catalogright here you've got is this thelicense agreement yepyou've got a free os 2 tips anotherlittle card here to mail gosh ibmincluded like a ton of stuffin the box like all this stuff you couldlook through and like mail in microsoftdid not usually include uh this muchstuff inversions of windows so this is reallyinteresting to see and this is this nicelittle quick reference card it's printedon like a cardstockuh material hereand so yeah a quick little guideinstalling the operating system we verywell may refer back to this now yeahthis is an upgrade addition but what'sinteresting is it doesn't necessarilysay you have to upgrade from os 2 2.0because right here it says you can usethis upgrade package to install os 2.1on your personal computer over existingdos or os2 operating systems or dos withmicrosoft windows though there's okaywell let's just trademark microsoftwindows or trademarks and microsoftcorporation so yeah you could upgradefrom windows to os2which i guess ibm would want you tothink is a major upgrade right so yeahthat is uh pretty much everything inhere well it is everything in hereexcept for the cd like i mentioned thatis not in here but luckily wind worldexists and i was able to get a copy ofthat solet's go ahead and plug in the 98 pcwhich is conveniently running windows3.1andget this installed well look at thatit's actually running windows 95. yeah ikind of forgot that i installed windows95 actually upgraded from 3.1 to 95 onthe 98 pc in preparation for themicrosoft plus video that i recentlymade then just decided to use themonorail computer instead but yeah sowe're going to be doing something reallystupid which is trying to see how os2reacts to a copy of windows 95 beinginstalled on the drive so we're going tostart out by popping in the installationdisketteinto the three and a half inch drivehereand we're going to put in ourcd hereand let's restart this thing and getthis quote unquote upgrade procedure onthe way there we go remove the diskettefrom drive a and then yeah this is whereit asks for diskette number onewhich is the only other discount that wehave here soi hope it's all we needwhich i think it is so we'll press enteroh my gosh check out that logo oh thatis that is wonderful yeah the os2 logodesign i always found to be pretty cooldespite how simple it is it's verypleasing to look at i guess if that'sif that's a thing people say so we'reloading here now if i remember correctlyi tried to install you know i think thatwas warp 4. when i was making that warp4 install video back in 2019 i ran intoa problem with the first version that iuse and then i decided to switch over towarp4.2.1 or warp 4.3 whatever it was that iused in that video i don't think i evertried a version of os2 like pre-warp os2like 2.1 like we've got here so i hopeeverything works but this computer isdefinitely far newerof a machine far newer hardware thanthis os was ever designed to run on thisis like seven years newer i mean whatthis os came out in 93 this computer isfrom the year 2000 so yeah seven yearsofuh difference there which is like aneternity back in you know the age of 90scomputing and 80s computing as wellwe're still on the loading screen hereand that floppy disk read writeindicator is on full time thereyeah i think the system system's lockedup here oh isn't this glorious all rightlet's uhlet's put the installation discount backin and restart here we can't even presscontrol deleteyeah that's how you know we're in deeptrouble all right we'll do a force poweroff then yeah this is probably just thecase of this hardware being far too newthat the software is just freaking outand is like what on earth is this guytrying to install me on uh sowe'll just uh try it again here i meanthe problem is i am in the process ofmoving i've mentioned that before so allof my computers are pretty much packedupso i don't havea machine on hand i mean the monorail isthe closest second i'd sayi mean that's from 96 so that'sonly three years apartsowe could try it on the monorail i'dhonestly like to avoid i mean i i guessi could just restore it back againto windows 95 so yeah we could try themonorail if this fails here which ihighly suspect it's going to becauseuh i mean are there any options herelike there's noboot options or anything about like youknow pressenter or not it wouldn't be enter presslike f1 or something to see advancedoptions we got none of that maybe let'stake the cd out of the drivebecause it hasn't prompted us for thatyetsowe'll swap over to installation diskettenumber oneand press enter yeahno options on this screen hereyeah i don't think we're gettinganywhere with this we got no activity atall so i'd say this is oh that thisisn't even in there i'd say this is justa case of this hardware being far toonew for this operating system so let'shop on board the monorailall right so we're gonna put in theinstallation diskette to the side of themonorail that you cannot seeso who knows if i'm actually putting itin right now i'm not because i can't seethere it is okay oh i gotta fix thatspeaker he's gonna stand here for therest of the time we'll put him backthere now this machine has let's uhlet's look at the system requirementshere because this will be reallyhilarious souh os2 requires yeah 386 uh this righthere has a 75 megahertz amd it wasessentially amd's it's the one of the k5processors that was intended to competewith the pentium that's the differencethat we're looking at there and memory ithink this thing has 16 megabytes andos2 needs at least four megabytes thishas a one gig hard drive does it sayhard drive space hard disk with 20 to 40megabytes of free spaceyeahoh gosh that's wonderful so okay wegotta pop in disk at number one let'ssee how successful we are here i got agood feeling about this for some reasonohthere we go heck yeah man see i told youi had a good feeling about this so ithas not asked us for the cd yet i assumeit's going to do that shortly here atleast we got further than we did withthe 98 pcokay we got a message something couldn'tbe found but it immediately went awaythere we go insert cd into cd-rom drivethen press enteryou think os2 has ever been installed ona monorail before those are the kind ofthings that i wonder about when i'mdoing this insert what do you mean it'sin oh no don't tell me it can'toh no it can't detect the cd-rom driveit's oh goshoh jeez okay obviously there's a problemwith it loading thedriver probably because the cd rom drivedidn't exist whenwhen this uh os was created soyeah and there's no options either liketo load a separate driver or anythingit's just press enter well this is arewritable cd and i've had problems witholder cd-rom drives reading fromrewritable cds let me get anon-rewritable cdandtry that let's pop that on in thereoh man reallyit sounded like it was reading off thediscall right so i guess the device driverjust isn't loadedbecause this is not making a differenceat all so what on earth can we do fromthis point i don't actually know i donot have a cd drive from the early 90s idon't have anything i mean it isspinning up right like i took a note ofthe position let's pop it out againyeah it's definitely spinning upknow the drive works and it sounds likewhen i hit enter that it starts to readfrom it i guess we could oh gosh i donot want to take this thing apart andlike change thelike change what drive is plugged in allright so there's two other computers ihavethat are also from 1996 butmaygive us a better shot one of them is the90s mystery pc that custom build that ishowcased a little while back and ihaven't forgotten about that butyou're never going to believe this i'vebeen running into some power relatedissues with that machine the powersupply seems to kind of be on the fritzi don't exactly i just haven't reallylooked into it to be honest with youbecause of the whole moving thing thiswhole moving thing is like just takingup a lot of time uh so the other machinethat i have here is the packard bell thefive dollar packard bell you guysremember that yeah i still have that aswell i have to excuse the front herebecausei've gosh this is like i've beenuh in the way too long process ofretrobriting this thingand by that i mean i started back inlike 2020and then justkind of forgot about it and moved on toother projects and i've actuallyretrobrited it once i need to do itagain because it's not fully done uhthat's where thethe front floppy disk uh cover is or notcover like the front plastic pieceand yeah you know just just just ignoreall this is basically what i'm sayinghere because it's a complete messanyways we can go ahead and power thisthing on and oh let me actually put inthe disc before it starts uplet's put in the installation discounthere and uhthis is such a disaster so let's put inuh disc oh jeezwhat am i turning into linus orsomething gosh okay disk at one in thedriveuh oh no is the keyboard not thekeyboardi know the problem here the problem isuh the backio shield label is not on the computerso i didn't know which ps2 port was forthe keyboard which one is for the mouseso i got them swapped right now so thekeyboard's not doing anything hey yeahyeah this is absolutely turning into abut everything went wrong video umbecausegosh we're like whati think i'm 40 minutes into thisrecording yeah 49 minutesand we haven't even gotten to theinstaller yet i mean for you guys it'snot going to be 49 minutes because iwill edit some of this stuff out youknow there's times where i'm just likelooking stuff up waiting around forstuff to happen that all gets edited outuh trust me i waitplenty long i've like gotten commentsfrom people you should have waitedlonger and it's like what happens is ijust cut it out so it looks to you guyslike it's just you know i just waitedfive seconds and gave up but that's notthe case so let's put in uh let's havethis knot likefly out of hereso let's put it back in is the keyboardokay the keyboard's working now soi was pressing caps lock there and thelight was coming on so we'll put in diskat number one hit enter and there we gonow i believe i've got the yes i've gotthe uhi've got the cd drive properly installedand plugged into the motherboard[Music][Applause]oh my goshwhat did i doare you kidding me how could i be sostupid i pluggedlook at thislook at this look at how stupid this isokay so this here oh my gosh this waswhat was plugged into the cd drive andlook where it runs toit runs to the back of the hard drive ididn't even plug it in right and youcould tell i was in a rush there packingthis thing upoh my goshokay so that umthat gives us hope at least thatuh this could still work it's just thatit wasn't actually freaking plugged inokay so let's put in our installationdisk god i can't believethat that was the issue i'm glad that ilooked at that cd-rom found fixed disk 0is the western digital hard drive sothat's good now that i think about it itdidn't say that last timei just can't i just can't believe thatit was that it was not oh god all rightso we got to put in uh os disc onehereso there we go disc at number one or ostwo discount number one i should sayi'll press enter yeah if this doesn'twork i'm gonna definitely bedisappointed uhbut we can swap it with the other uhwith the other cd drive and perhapswe'll get better luck with that momentof truth actually this timelet's do itno oh my goshall right so uh let's swap the drivealthough there is one thing i want tosee here i'm pretty sure that i have thehard disk in primary master and the cddrive and let's just go to setup hereyes so primary masters the c drivesecondary master is the cd-rom drive sowe've got that set up properly there sowe'll just get out of here and let's uhlet's swap the drive all right simpleenough solet's try it again what is this likeattempt number five now all right i'vegot a bad feeling about this i'mhonestly starting to wonder if thisimage on herethat i got from wind world is notthe right image or something let's do itnope all right let's see if the problemis the image[Music]helloit's been about an hour since the lastclipand i've been doing a couple thingsbehind the scenes uh one thing i didis i i started to wonder about the cditselfbeing corrupted or something there wassome issue with it just not being ableto read the contents off the disk itselfbut that it was still recognizing thedrive i've confirmed that that's mostlikely is not the case i downloaded thesame disk from a different sourceand experienced the exact same problemand i tried both of those images in a vmand we got the exact same problem so itseems like everything is pointing tothis being a driver related issue sothat brings usto this glorious stack of diskettes thati've been spending the last hour or sopreparingthis right hereis uh the entire os2 2.1 operatingsystem on floppy diskettes which theyalso soldalongside the cd version presumably andwe're going to install it from floppydiskettes because you know it obviouslycan detect the floppy drive just fine sowe've got the install disk in the driveright now and we're at the same screenso we're going to pop out the installdisk and we're going to put in diskettenumber one right here and oh yeah checkthis out i dug out the front plate herefor the packard bell so it looks alittle more appealing to look atso yeah i figured if we're gonna beusing this computer might as well makeit look presentable so let's see if thisis successful i'm bound and determinedto get this os installedbefore this video is over so this iskind of like the last resort aside fromdoing this in a vm which i wanted toavoid i want to do this on the real dealreal hardware there we go welcome to os2following screens guide you through theinstalling through the installing let mesay that again the following screensguide you through installing theoperating system to trademark program ona hard disk all right let's press enterversion of os2 system supports windowstrademark 3.1 programs if you'reupgrading your system from os2 2.0 thisenhanced version for windows 31 programplaces yeah so that was the big dealwith uh os 2 2.1 is it included supportfor windows 3.1 programs which had beenout by that time so os2 2.0 was releasedbefore windows 3.1 so uh yeah we'regoing to uh press enter to continue os2will be installed on drive c that's finewe will accept the drive remove thediskette insert disk at 2 into drive athen press enter all rightincoming disk at number twoand yes we are going to format thepartition because we've already gotwindows 95 on here we just want to startfreshand we'll go with the high performancefile system super fancy warning harddisk partition might contain data pressenter to format the partition yes itdoes contain data but we're going toroll with it it's just a standardinstall of when oh my gosh an erroroccurred holy cow is this a red screenan error occurred when setupinstallation tried to format your fixeddisk failed due to an error to takeaction insert the operating system toinstallation diskette okay i think we'regonna probably have to boot uhis there any way we can get out of thisor no i think we'reyep we gotta restart yayall right so i'm almost certain this isjust a conflict with the partitionthat's already on the drive so we'rejust gonna pop in a windows 95boot disk here we'll restart thecomputer and just formatthe partition actually just delete thepartition make sure there's nothing onthe drive so the installer doesn't uhhave to panic there oh is this that diskthat was giving me a bunch of problemsbefore yeah this is that disc that wasgiving me a bunch of problems beforethis is a windows 95 boot disk butuh this computer's not liking it allright let's try a microsoft6.22disk number one and just quit out of theinstaller starting ms-doshooray if it's not one problem it'sgonna be something else that's a classicmjd video for you general whatwhat do you mean general failure readingdrive a this is like not my day man allright i guess this disc is badi very rarely have experienced floppyissues like with you know floppydiskettes failing and it looks likethat i've got two of them here i had awindows 98 oh here it isi've been i was looking for this it washidden in the back of this thing so canyou even exit out of this here if we dof3well this this will bring you back todos right yes okay can we run fdiskhooray okay let's view partitioninformation so we've got primary dospartitionso we're going to not exit out did notwant to do thatwe're going to go to deletedelete primary dos partitionenter volume label there is noneoh there isaphuh yes i'm sure primary dos partitiondeleted so nownothing is on the drive no partitions atall if you select option one onepartition which takes up the entire harddisk will be created if you want morethan one partition select two so we'regoing to go with one because we justwant one partition that's fine uh for ushard disk partitioning is complete thesystem must be restarted remove thesketch from drive a insert theinstallation disk in drive a and pressenter okay hey there we go alright sohigh performance file system that's whatwe want please wait while theinstallation partition is formattedloading system what okay so what's thisaboutan error occurred when setupinstallation or system installationtried to copy a file installationprogram has failed due to an error toview the error look at the install.logfile that was created for you that filegives the condition that caused theerror what is the problem with this manwell we're just going to try it againall right we're here againuhoh my gosh i really don't want to endthis video off not having this installedbut it's looking like that's it'slooking like that's becoming more andmore of a possibility it says it'scomplete that there's no waythat doesn't seem right all right we'llput thewe'll put the installation diskette backin drive athis is exactly what it did beforealthough it is it's not formatting itit's just making the partition so yeahthat's i was thinking for a second i'mlike there's no way it's formatted todrive that quickly i think it wasgetting to that point when it spit outthat error message all rightlet's put in disk number one againthere's a lot of waiting around hereso there's gonna be a lot of cuts tothis video but i've got two128 gigabyte sd cards filled up this iscrazy like how long some of these videosare oh my gosh i'm gonna really have funediting this one holy cowenterenterenter okay2 will be installed on drive clet's accept the driveand this is where we were before we putin disk at number twoi don't know let's try the fat filesystem and see if that makes adifference okay yeahyeah we didn't get to this point beforeso okay goodall right i will take it i willabsolutely take it all right i thinkit's about time for a time lapse[Music]uh it needs the installation disketteagainokaythat's interestingso it doesn't need disk at six at themoment i guessoh okay it's gotta transfer files fromthe installation diskette[Music]and it needs diskette one again okaywhat on earth is this disk order manit needs like okay it needs disk numberone again okaytransferring five okaythat'sthat's kind of convoluted but okay i'llroll with it[Music]okay is it gonna need disk at twooh okay hard disk preparation iscomplete the next step will be os2system configuration remove the diskettepress enter to sort os 2 systemconfiguration the following trademarksare used gosh classic ibm you got tohave a list of trademarks there okay soi guessi've only used one through six there's17 installation diskettes soii assume it's gonna ohall right i'm really channeling my innerlinus at this point let's just uh let'shit enter it doesn't say put anythingback in to the discount drive so we'llhit enter is it going to restart it'sgoing to restart okay three two onei assume it's gonna need this get sixthrough seventeen and those two displaydiskettes at some point otherwise i'mgonna be very upset that i wasted allthat timemaking themokayso it should be booting off of the harddrivei thinkoh my goshi don't hear any hard drive activity allright so it's been about five minutes orso and we're still here and there's nodrive activity at allso i'm just gonna restartlike it didn't tell us to put theinstallation disk back in the drive soi'm like what like i guarantee if we putit back in it's just gonna restart theentire process like have this go fromthe beginning again yeah i'm starting toget concerned hereokay let's try to put in a windows 98boot disk here and see if it actuallycopied anything over to the hard diskyeah we got stuff on here okay there'san install directoryokay let's try ins-t-t-u-t-rnotokay instt-u-t-rprogram cannot be running a dos sessionso what the heck are we supposed to doit just told us to remove the disk andpress enter and then it just restartedand did nothingi am at a loss here like i don't knowwhatokay just fyi i'm going through theseinstructions here and it does mention onthe second page i should have looked atthis before that os2 supports themajority of scuzzy based cd-rom drivesand that if you wanted to obtainadditional like if your drive wasn'tsupported you could umobtain the os2 adapter device driver dotfile and follow the instructions in thebefore you begin section of the os2installation guide to add this file todisk at one is there anything in hereaboutall right let's start from scratch andtry it again okay so we're at thisscreen againand it asks us to remove the diskettefrom the diskette drivepress the enter key to start os2 systemconfiguration and that's exactly what wedid beforebut it just didn't do that at all andagain we still have not gone through theother diskettes at all soi mean it's just gonna do the same thingi i don't i literally don't know what'sgoing on here all right let's just tryit again remove the diskettepress the enter key okayoh my gosh why i honestly think this isjust a lost cause at this point i hateto do this i hate to end off a videowithout getting this thing installed butthis has been an absolute disaster imean it's good that we got this far wegot it partially installedi mean that's something there are os2files on the hard disk that is a partialvictory i don't know like i don't knowwhat what to do from here maybe some ofyou guys who have installed os2 beforeagain i have never installed thisversion of os2 in my life so uh this isi'm experiencing this or i haveexperienced it with you guys and let metell you this has been a complete andutter disaster i did not think we'regonna have this many problems butuh if anybody has any suggestions and bythe way before somebody comments that ohwell this is an upgrade edition ofcourse it's not gonna workthis version that i got here is not andyou can see it formatted the hard driveso like it doesn't need an existing osinstalled i think we're gonna have toend it off here guys and we'll figuresomething out for os2 warp three maybebutthis uhmaybe we'll revisit this at some pointbut for now i think that i've certainlyhad enough you guys have probably hadenough of me trying to deal with thisfor just way too long and uhyeah this happens from time to timethings just don't end up working in theend but
