freebsdn it'sunderstandable there are ways to try itout before you actually commit yourselftwo of the best ways are ghost BSD andNomad BSD with ghost BSD it's a livesession so everything runs off the DVDor the DVD image on your USB storagedevice without ever changing anythingand then you can install to hard driveif you wish a normal BSD runs completelyoff the USB device and and can havestorage as well unlike ghost BST butthat can also be installed to the harddrive like golf vsd so these twooperating systems are an excellent wayto try FreeBSD because basicallyunderneath a nice shiny surface is theBeating Heart of FreeBSD foreignthere are lots of resources you can usewhen you're actually thinking aboutgoing to FreeBSD or once you've gonedown the path and you start to installFreeBSD and one of the main ones Ialways consult and always Point peopletowards if there has any questions aboutFreeBSD Israel maiden's blog now itcovers almost every topic you couldn'timagine and I do consider this to be anunofficial addition to the FreeBSDhandbook which is the officialdocumentation he goes into a lot ofdetail uh configurations how to getGraphics up and going how to install thebasic things and it is done in a verygrounded and down-to-earth where there'sno um let's say there's no arrogancethere he's a very very approachable anddown to earth guy and if you've got anyquestions about his Blog then you justdrop him a line either via email onTwitter and you'll get back to you andyou'll explain things and he takes histime and I really respect that so as youcan see we're scrolling down there'slots of lots of different ways tocontact him and lots of subjects that hetalks about and to me it's an invaluableresource something which every would-beand prospective free VST user reallyshould console check the maiden's blockout and you won't be disappointedthe next resource which really youshould check out is like you're sayingit's the official FreeBSD handbook fromfreebsd.org now this has been updatedwith a lot of new information it goesinto I think more detail than themaidens really because it's uh that'sreally what it should be doing but theyreally break everything down into verysimple and very easy digestible chunksso it's uhlike you say it's it progresses intomore sophisticated and harder topics butit will ease you into that rather thanjust dumping you straight there which alot of documentation for freebst are alot of guides for freebst uh have atendency to do so yeah for the officialguide the FreeBSD handbook is uhsomething that you should be checkingoutand well what can I say and you the lastsort of results you should be checkingout or maybe the first yeah I'm justgoing to ring my own Bell is is myYouTube channel I've done quite a fewvideos on how to install FreeBSD andeasy guides to get FreeBSD up and goingin really to do what you want it to doso I've done quite a few videos and it'ssomething which I like to help peopleget to grips with FreeBSD and to showthem that it's not just for servers Ithink freebie I think my YouTube channelwas one of the first uh really to I'm athome the fact that freebie SD camerauses a desktop as well and uh it'ssomething I'm quite proud of andsomething I will continue to doforeignTy the first thing you'll need is a USBstorage device a minimum eight gigabytesI would say and then you will have tohead on to the FreeBSD websitethe FreeBSD projectand download and you can see that bigyellow button in the middle it saysdownload FreeBSD so you click on thatand it will always take you to at thetop there's always the latest releaseand you probably want in that onealthough you could choose an earlier oneif you wish you'll need to selectinstall imageor a virtual machine image if you'redoing that way SD card if you're puttingit say for instance I'm a single boardcomputer and there's documentation ifyou want some extra helpbut in this case what we need to do isdownload and I would say the 64-bitimage the AMD 64. you can have boot onlydisk One dvd one mem stick on minimumstick so we'll put it onto a USB storagedeviceso really we should be downloading themem stick imageif you will if you are born into a blankDVD or CD then one of the eyesores woulddo so we're downloading the mem stickimage the AMD 64 one and we'll put itinto the computer then boot up rightonce that's downloaded we'll put intothe test machine and boot up of courseyou could install it to any machine youwant you can install it to the samemachine you're looking at this on andput in a different hard drive it's justremember it will overwrite the harddrive which you're actually using asyour main system so bear that in mind somaking sure that we can boot up on USBthe system will greet you like thisit'll go to count down for nine secondsbut you could interrupt it if you wishby pressing enter don't worry about anyof the boot options at the moment that'sfor a much later date and we just needto get things up and going it willautomatically start loading up with lotsof text scrolling the screen there's nofancy Graphics here and you knowactually in in time the more you useFreeBSD the more you'll appreciateseeing the information on screen becauseit gives you an idea what's happeningand lets you know if there's anyproblemsright you get this nice blue welcomescreen gives you three options you caninstall you can use shell or Live CDdon't worry about them we just need topress enter for installand it will let you choose a key map thedefault standard one is us so if that'swhere you are then you can just pressenter to continue with the default keymapand you can test it if you want but inthis case what we need to do uh there'sa lot if you want to test it what weneed to do is go down to UK because I'min the United Kingdomuh of course any of the ones that we'rescrolling past if you need to do themit's the same processso we're pressing United Kingdom if youneed to test it again press test if youwish but I trust it and continuepressing enter and now it's asking for ahost name so you can choose any name youwantuh let's try and keep it relativelySharpso I'm going to call it testand your distribution select so whatthis is lets you install things from thebeginninguh your best debugging system you don'tneed that if you're just a user andyou're not going to develop inuh it's the same with kernel debug youdon't need that but otherwise you canleave it at the defaults press enteryou can choose which uh file system youwould like to new Partition your diskAuto ZFS Auto ufs manual or shelluh the manual show you don't need toworry about Auto ufs is for the olderUnix file system which is very reliablebut it doesn't have the power of ZFS soZFS is the is the one we need it's arelatively modern file system so I'llpress hit enter we get these choices uhyou really you don't press anything yetbecause it's not set up your disks leavethe rest of the options here at defaultso we need to settle the disk that youwant to install toso if you press enter you don't get thisoption by the way if you've chosen ufsit's a much simpler operation we caneither choose stripe mirror rear 10 redZ1 Z2 Z3 because we're on a single diskwe're going to choose stripe with noredundancy the rest is uh for a futurevideo it's a bit more technical but wejust go with the top one and the discwe're installing to is a Samsung so weinstall that to that the bottom one isthe USB stick which we're installingfrom now that that's been done it saysone disk we can press enter and proceedit'll give you a warning saying are yousure you want to destroy the contentsyes we do and off it goes it will formatthe hard drive using ZFS and install thevarious knickknacks I'm just going tofast forward this bit because it takes alittle whileand there we go now the installerchanges and it turns to this nice blackand white text it's asking you for aroot password or the admin password asit's also known as choose a passwordthat you can rememberand try and keep it different from youruser account password that you'll beusing later on I mean if I supposetechnically if you're the only personusing the computer maybe you could usethe same but it's always good habit notto use the same one with FreeBSD unlikesome other operating systems you can'tsee when you type so you're going tohave to remember how many characters youdid and how you spelled it otherwiseyou're not going to log in this room oragain admin privilegesand once you choose the network card butso there's only one fitted on thismachine so we'll can press enterwould you like to configure ipv4 yeswe know you can choose not if you wishand would you like to use DHCP normallyif your system if you prefer that thenyes in this case I'm going to manuallyconfigure it because the way that I'veconfigured my network it gets a littlefunkyso I'm just going to put the addressingmanually subnet maskand default routerlike I say you can choose DHCP if youwishand I don't want to configure IPv6network configuration need a search termipv4resolve for DNS and I'm just going toput that Google on the bottomyou can put any of that you want inthere of course is this machine no it'snot set to UTC so no and because weselected no we're gonna have to choose atime zone manually I'm just going downto Europe of course you know if yoursisn't in Europe or it's in Africa thenyou need to choose the one appropriatefor your country in the time zoneuh that looks fine you can Skip and youcan skipif everything looks fine you can skipfinals uh little choices services thatyou'd like to start up uh you can leaveit at default although I would alwaysget rid of dump Dev because you don'tneed that enable mouse and ntp so youcan configure the clock automaticallychoose system security wellagain it's choice you can just leave itas it is if you want or you canenable some like disable send mail andsyslog d and clear temp when you rebootthe system and randompidsother than thatyou can press enterwould you like to add users well it'snot going to be much good about it firstyou put your username it's usuallylowercase and usually one word so justin case I'm typing Robo nugget then youcan put your full name and obviouslyit's going to be you could put your realname or like I said a version of yourusername if you wish user IDs leave thatdefault login group leave that fordefault uh invite to other groups wellit's really useful if you want to enteradmin privileges for wheeloperator and videoI like to put them because it really itgets rid of some incompatibility withgraphic drivers Etcdefault default default shell isselected as a search you have thatI believe that as default and that hasdefault uh leave that as default yesand leave that as default we use arandom password no that's default againand now because you haven't got a randompassword we need to enter a passwordwhich again is going to be differentfrom the root so remember it andremember how many spaces you put in Etclock out the account no you don't wantto do that and there's a summary of whatwe've just enteredif you're happy with thatpress yes oh sorry type yes I like thatthis is so you don't accidentally make amistakeyou don't want to add another user noand there we aresoif there's no changes that you want tomake because this is the place where youdo it after you've installed it just tomake a changeyou can select enter for exitandbefore actually solid would you like toopen a shell normally I would just knowthat personality would go into rebootand then you just quickly whip out theUSB stick but in this case this isperhaps a better way to do it go intoshelltype in haltand the system will shut downnow for those who perhaps haven't gotthe Olympic skills to quickly uh removethe USB stick before the system rebootsuh and then you end up going back intothe installer this is perhaps the bestway so once it's shut down remove theinstaller reboot the system now itshould reboot using the hard drive thatyou installed FreeBSD toagain you can press enter to speedthings up but you know it's a ninesecond thing so you can quickly accessthe menu if you want to do any of themright so the systems but we know I'm notgoing to fast forward I'm going to uhshorten all its Glory I say you don'tget a wonderful splash screen there areways to do it but not in this videoand we'll just keep on goinguntil it'ssets itself up and like I was sayingearlier you actually become toappreciate all the texts scrolling up onFreeBSD there's something which I thinkmany Linux distributions got rid of along time ago for a more user-friendlyuh thing but you missed some of the uhinformationright so you get a login screen you putthe username that we put in earlierhopefully you remembered itand the password again hopefully youremember if not it's going to be a veryuh uh a quick demo and it's going to beover soon right so there we are we'relogged into the FreeBSD system you don'thave to leave that text of
