okay welcome to another video todaywe're going to take a look at anoperating system that i've wanted tocheck out on the channel for quite awhile nowand that is hello system so reading fromthe intro of their handbookhello system is a desktop system forcreators with a focus on simplicityelegance and usability its designfollows the less but better philosophyit's intended as a system for meremortals welcoming to switches from macfreebsd is used as the core operatingsystem so interestingly hello systemuses something called applicationbundles to manage their nativeapplicationswhenever possible application bundlesare usedxdg style.desktop files are consideredlegacy and should be avoidedand with this it brings a number ofbenefits such as easily move around thefile system and relocateeasily delete by moving to the trash andyou can also do this without the needfor a package managernow as of just a few days ago they'vereleased a brand new version with anumber of fixes and they've managed toshrink the iso file size down to1.27 gb with that out of the way let'sjump into the live environmentand get this installed and here we areso it took a little while for it to bootinto the live environment but we shouldnow be good to goso we are going to be installing thisnatively but as per usual for those ofyou like to skip the installation partsof these videosthere'll be a timestamp down below whichwill take you straight to the installeddesktop and here we are with theinstallation so first things first we'regoing to press continueso we've got the license here so we'rejust going to press continue for nowand now we're going to choose whichdrive we're going to be installing itontoand we're going to use the drevo x1 ssdso this would erase all content on thedisk and install the freebsc operatingsystemdo you want to continue we do indeednext okay time for our user account sowe're just going to call thiscider type in our passwordtype it in once more and for thecomputer name which is going to call ithello so now we can enable users to login over the networkso that's with ssh and we can set thetime zone based on the current locationso i'm going to enable both of these fornowthis will send a request one time tolocate your computer over the networkcontinue yep that's fine and there we goas we can see there it's found in europelondon and we can continue to the nextstepokay so i think that's it i'll pause thevideo here and then we'll come backonce it's finished and there we go seethe installation has completed it tookno time at all clocking at just a fewminutes on my machinelet's let's reboot and check out ourfreshly installed hello system and herewe are booting off disk for the firsttime and we've reached a hello welcomescreens let's quickly run through thisand then we can start taking a lookaround a hello systemcontinue so a system that works for notagainst youprivacy requires no activation and noids and no accountsit does not spy on you and blockstracking and adds by defaultcomes with peer-to-peer technology builtin eg for receiving remote assistancefreedom lets you load software withoutrestrictionsno signatures sound boxes andnotarizationsmakes it easy to modify applications nohardware vendor lock-in are designed torun on machines that are no longersupported by the manufacturerwith operating system updates securitybuilt-in end-to-end encryption wherepossible and has full source codeavailable for verificationslattle cells are very cool continueand that's it have fun exploring thesystem and please keep in mind that thisis a pre-release versionintended mainly for developers andtesters right so i think what we shouldstart off with is just going through thedesktop itself and seeing how it's allset upnow i do believe the default windowmanager it's going to be using is openboxbut as of this most recent version itcan also be set up to usekwim now we can see quite clearly themac os kind ofinspired look and feel of the desktopitself with the panel at the topwith the system-wide global menu andclock to the rightand then we have our dock at the bottomand even our icons are positioned to theright hand side of the screennow we'll start at the top of the screenwith our panel so we have our clock hereso clicking on it doesn't really appearto do anything and that's with left andright clicksalthough it has actually activated thesearch bar so i guess clicking any freespace on the panelwill then go ahead and open up yoursearch bar which we'll have a look at injust a momentand then we have our global menus we'vegot nothing open at the moment as far asapplicationsso we can just jump straight into aboutthis computer and we can see that we areusing3sp version 12.2okay now the dock itself it doesn'tappear to have any sort of right-clickoptions to edit the dockbut if we click on an application we canchoose to remove thatapplications icon from the dock so i'mgoing to imagine it's the same if you'vegot a new application openyou can right click and then pin it butwe'll test that out in just a momentnow right clicking on the desktop willlet you create a new folder so we havefull desktop kind of icons so like soand then we have our new folder rightthere and now we can just right clickthat and delete it by moving totrash and now if we go ahead and open upour trash there's that new folder thatwe have just created so let's go aheadand delete that now to completely emptyit from our systemyes okay now we can also gostraight into the desktop preferenceshere as wellso here is where you can change yourwallpaper mode so the currentlystretched to fill the entire screenthen you can fill with just a backgroundcolor stretch to fit center and tileand then just beneath it is where youcan actually choose your own backgroundimage and there is the color selector aswell as the label textand then in the advanced we have thewindow manager show menus provided bywindow managers when desktop is clickedand then we can change the location ofthe desktop folder itselfokay cool let's close that one off sowhat i want to do is just open up acouple of applications and see if wehaveside by side snapping by dragging itto the other sides of our screens so wedon't appear to so let's close that offnow while we've got nothing open if weopen up the tool section we can alsoopen the terminal straight from theglobal menu by either clicking thatbutton or as well as pressingf4 will do the same thing now we canalso go to helpanabel and now let's test out thissearch barso i'm not too sure what our actual filemanager is called so we're going to testthis out with the web browser which isinstalled out of the boxwhich is falcon and as you can see it'sjust dropped a little label down belowletting us know that allin space will activate the search barfor us as well so let's go ahead andtest this out with falcon nowand there we go it's going to gostraight to the falcon applicationand while we're in here let's just typein something like fileand see what options that gives us aswell so it gives us some applicationsoptions to find the android filetransfer tool with mtp or we can alsoget infoor go into tool and find files itselfokay that's very coollet's close that off and then we alsohave the option to find files here usingcontrol andf so i think what we should probably goahead and do is have a look at some ofthe default applications installed outof the boxand start playing around with things sopressing on system we've got all of ourapplications categories and thenhovering over themwe'll then expand it to show you therest of the applications inside thatcategoryso in just applications we have falconwhich is of course our web browserfeatherpad elector and qpdf viewnow in 3d printing we have freecadprocess slicerultimaker cura now the last time ichecked out hello system in a virtualmachine a lot of these applicationsweren't actually installedand i'll show you just what i mean in amoment now for audio we have audacityandlmms which is like a digital audioworkstationand in developer we have light idepycharm ceq hex edit qt creator and aziland then in developer preview we haveand these are all developments orpreview applications that aren't quitefully ready yet but we'll check some ofthem out so we have disk first aid andwe have their own disk utility appand as you can see here this applicationis a preview for developers and is notfully functional yet so do expect to runinto the odd problemas we can see here it's a pretty simpleand standard way to manage your drivesand partitionsnot too dissimilar from applicationssuch as g partedand while we've got this window open wecan see that we have two buttons we haveamaximize button and when we do that thedock stays on the screen so i don'tthink we have any auto hide working asof yetand then the other button is just toclose so we have no minimize buttonso i'm going to imagine what we're goingto do to minimize it is click theapplications iconon the dock and then that's going to goahead and sort ofput it back there and then clicking itagain we can then restore theapplication and there's a nice littlesort of fades transition as it comesback and repaints the windownow as we've got disk utility open let'sright click on itand see how easy it is to pin theapplication to our dockso as you can see there we can now keepdisk utility in dock like soand now when we close disk utility wecan then just relaunch it straight fromwithin herehowever we appear to have run into aproblem with that so we could not launchthe applications developerokay that's interesting so let's justremove that from our dot for nail thenand we won't worry about that right thissecondnow as well as disk utility we haveenergy saving let's have a quick look atthatagain it's giving you the warning aboutbeing a developer previewand here we can see just a very simpleapplication to slideto a different time interval to choosewhen to turn your display offvery simple stuff let's close that offand see what else we've got in developerpreviewwe then have our network we have ascreen cast tool let's have a look athow this one works again we've got thewarningokay so it appears that this little iconright here is the recording so we canclickor right click and it's going to givethe option to start or just straight upquits let's test out of a startso it doesn't appear at the moment to begiving us any indication that therecording has begunbut now we can right click it once moreand press stop to end that recordingokay let's keep going so that wasdeveloper preview anything else in herewe might want to take a lookat so we have simple browser which isgoing to be another web browsersimply called a simple browser and ofcourse we have falcon which i do thinkat the moment is set up as your defaultweb browserokay let's close that off and see ifthere's anything else i want to see indeveloper previewwe're going to have the start diskapplication and this time it is going toask you for pseudo privilegesso we're going to go ahead and press okand here we can see the order of thestart disks and we should just be abletoclick on things and move things aroundand then restart but we won't worryabout that and let's keep movingso that was everything apart from diskfirst aid and network and now let's jumpdown into graphicsso as you can see it's quite a lot ofstuff here for creator to use especiallylike blender andink space krita scribblers and scanlitenow like i mentioned beforehand notall of these applications are actuallyfully installed and ready to goso for example if you wanted to go aheadand use we press the iconnow needs to be downloaded beforeit can be useddo you want to download it now yes it'sgoing to ask you for your passwordand then we're going to give it all theprivileges it needsand it appears to have just disappearedlet's see if that's installed or whetherit's run into a bit of an issueno so let's try it once more so we'regoing to go and type in a password againpress ok so if we go into show detailswe can see sort of the status of whereit's atand it appears to be struggling gettingpast this part here where it's updatingthe repositoriesi'm hoping that's not the case for allof the other applications but we'llwe'll check that out now so i think whatwe'll do is we'llskip for now and keep it moving sonow let's go back into graphics and testout with a different applicationlet's go ahead and test out withinkscape and what we're going to do ishopefully if this does installit should also work with the systemwideglobal menu out of the box without nointervention and neededso again we're going to type in ourpassword okay so this timeit appears to be working so as you cansee it's got past that pointwhere it's updating the repositories andit's now installing the packages for usso i'll pause the video here while thisis installing and come back once it'sfinished and there we go isinstalled without any problem whatsoeverandas you can see we have the full globalmenu support for all of the sort ofsettings you might want to go ahead anduseperfect so i'm very happy that that justworks without any need to sort of messaround with things that's a very coollet's close in fact let's test out thepinning to the dockwith inkscape and see if this time itwill actually launch the applicationonce it's been closedso let's try that again and there we goso i'm not too sure what was going onwith the first one but perhaps maybe itwas because it was a developer previewbut that appears to have workedabsolutely fine with graphics andinkscape so let's close that off and goback into applicationsnow again for graphics we're not goingto worry about installing any of theseother additional onesit's a shame we couldn't getworking because that's the one i use themost myself out of thosebut now let's go into office so we dohave libreoffice let's go ahead and dothatagain it's not going to be fullyinstalled yet so we're going to runthrough the same process that we didbefore with inkscapeand i'll pause the video once more andlet this install libreofficeokay so our libra office application hasinstalled without any issues whatsoeverso we can now go into ouroffice applications and go ahead andlaunch libreofficeand there it is with the nice littleicon there in our dock and of coursewe can always go ahead and choose tokeep that in our dock itselfand while we're in here let's jump intothe writer and then as you can see wehave the fullglobal menu support working absolutelyflawlesslylet's close that one up for now and keepit moving so moving over to preferencesnow we haveboot environments let's open up this oneselect the environment the computershould startinto boot environments are bootableclones of snapshots of the workingsystemcreate a safe fail back boot environmentbefore upgrading or making major changesto the systemnote that boot environments by defaultmay not cover all locations such as homeso that is something that could be veryuseful let's close that off and keepmovingnow we also have a desktop which isgoing to be the same applications whenweright clicked on the desktop and wentinto our desktop preferences like sowe then have keyboard settings so supersimple little application here to changethe keyboard layout is currently on thewrong one so we want english unitedkingdomlet's close that off and go back intothe preferences let's see what elsewe've gotso did we then have mouse print settingsscreen settings and it's a very simplesort of screen layout editorwill work for multiple displays and asyou can see we have actuallyactive primary resolution or orientationlet's close that one off and see whatelse we've got in preferenceswe didn't have sharing which if youremember during the installation part ofthis videowe set up the sort of remote access withssh with our computer name of hello buthere's where we can also disable itand we could also enable screen sharingfrom this simple little applicationcalled sharing we didn't have shortcutkeys let's go ahead and open thatand here here is all of your shortcutkeys to let you know the keyboardshortcuts to opencertain things so for example controlaltand a it's going to open up yourapplications in the actual folder viewwhich we will get into in just a momentas well so we'll close that one off fornowbut there we go there's all of your sortof keyboard bindings that you might wantto go ahead and checklet's close that off and keep moving inpreferenceswe didn't have sound users and wirelessnetworksnext up we have the utilities so we havethe android file transfermpt build notify calculator and i dobelieve it's asuper simple little calculator there wego but it does fit and themes nicelywith the rest of the systemnow let's go back into utilities andagain the calendar ido believe is a similar story supersimple calendar applicationnow what else have we got in utilitiesso we can create live media we have ahardware probehelp logs and q terminal with yourdefault terminaland like we said at the beginning we canjust close that offand access the terminal anytime we wantby pressing f4or just going into our global menu goingto tool and then opening upopen terminal what else do we have inour utilitiesso we have the remote assistanceapplication and then we have stickynotes and zero compsnow sticky notes by default has thelittle welcome message here from hellosystemand if we can have a look now in the toppanel we have this little sort ofcollage of different notes and if weclick on that of a right click we canthen do a new notetoggle activity show all or resetpositions etcwe'll quit that off for now and keep itmoving now in video we have obs studioand shot cup now i don't think either ofthese are installed but i think what wewill dois install obs and test it out with ascreen recording and see if we run intoany issuesright so we've got obs installed sowe're going to do a quick littlerecording test i don't think it's goingto be super smooth though i can alreadysee it's dropping frames withoutanything really happeningso we've added a screen capture and itshould start to save the file on thedesktop so let's press start recordand there's the dot mkv file so that isrecording like you can see thoughperformance wise it isn't amazing butagain all very new stuff herelet's just move the window around alittle bit and now let's go ahead andstop that recordingand then double click on this and seewhat it opens it up withokay so it's opened up the video filewith mpvbut minus the sort of frame skippingthere it does appear to be workingout of the box with obs doing a simplescreen recording we can see a little bitof screen tearing there as well so youmight want to mess around with your sortofdrivers and exhaust files to get rid ofany screen tearing that might be presenton your systembut there we go so let's go ahead andclose up freebsd and what we're going todo nowlet's have a little run through of thesort of file manager and the applicationfolders now if we go back into ourglobal menu under system where we canfind all of our applications listed withthe categories herewhat's cool about this is as well asbeing able to launch all of ourapplicationsfrom here each of these categories isinteractive all sort of a single leftclickit's then going to open that up into ourfile manager and we can browse and sortof manipulate the applications as we seefit from here and actually this littleicon on ourdock here as well for preferencesclicking that will do the same thing butthen take you into the preferencesfolderwhich is this one there so now if weclose preferences off we'll see we'vegot a few applicationsthat aren't in any directory at all andwe can actually go and right click onthat and open in a new tabbecause each of these applications aremore like folders of everything you needso as you can see there isfalcon dot app and inside it we havefalcon filewe have resources which has asked pyexecutable falcon.png and packagesnow what's cool about that is we shouldbe able to actually move these dot appsanywhere we like on our systemand still be able to launch theseapplications let's give that a go nowso we're going to do a falcon so we'regoing to do a right click and go to copyand we're going to paste it straightonto our desktop like soand now we're going to do a double clicktest and make sure that it's going to goahead and open up our web browserperfect from the new location of ourdesktop and to manage your autostartapplicationsas you can see in the applicationsfolder we have a folder here calledautostartso much like all of the otherapplications we've checked out we canjust do a right click and go and open anew tabyou'll notice that each of these have alittle arrow on it symbolizing thatthese are just kind of likesim links so what we can do is justremove that entirelyfrom our sort of startup folder and oursticky note should no longer start up sowhat we can dois we're just going to move this to thetrash so now that we've removed thesticky notes application from our autostart folder we can go ahead and log outcheck out the login screen and then logback into the desktop without the stickynotes application launchingand here we are the login screen this isthe first time i've actually seen thelogin screen for hello systemvery simple not too much here going onso we've got our usernameinput box and now we can also go intothe passwordand get back into our desktop and weshould see that the sticky notesapplicationno longer starts up not to worry thoughit's not like we've removed the actualapplication itself all that we have goneahead and done is remove the linkso if we go back into utilities we cansee that we can still launch the stickynotes applicationwithout any issues so i think that iswhere i'm going to wrap it up with myfirst proper look at hello system basedon freebsdall in all i've really enjoyed it now ido really like the idea behind thisoperating systemnow i know it's still very early daysand there's a lot more that needs to bedone before this is ready to really be asort ofmain operating system but i definitelythink the potential is thereand i like the fact that one of the mainfocuses is sort ofsimplicity and keeping things quitesimple and easy to understandi do think this is one that will makemac users that are making a switch feela lot more comfortable as wellnow if you're going to give it a goyourself i do recommend just goingthrough the handbook a little bit to getyourself sort ofprepared for the way the system doeswork and operates but other than thatthank you for watching if
