episode</text><text start="4.08" dur="4.559">we're going to be taking a look at the</text><text start="6.899" dur="4.441">Nintendo Wii everybody's favorite</text><text start="8.639" dur="3.96">Nintendo console from 2006. and we're</text><text start="11.34" dur="3.06">going to be screwing around with it</text><text start="12.599" dur="4.921">today because we're going to attempt to</text><text start="14.4" dur="4.74">install Linux on this console that's</text><text start="17.52" dur="3.36">right now I figured this was pretty</text><text start="19.14" dur="3.84">appropriate because it was a year ago</text><text start="20.88" dur="4.8">this month when I did the PlayStation 2</text><text start="22.98" dur="4.559">Linux video using Sony's official PS2</text><text start="25.68" dur="3.06">Linux kit this method we're going to</text><text start="27.539" dur="2.82">take a look at on the Wii here is</text><text start="28.74" dur="3.72">certainly not official at all this was</text><text start="30.359" dur="3.54">not a Nintendo sanctioned thing and it's</text><text start="32.46" dur="3.66">only thanks to the work of some people</text><text start="33.899" dur="3.901">in the Wii home brewing community that</text><text start="36.12" dur="3">were even able to do this in the first</text><text start="37.8" dur="3.06">place so yes if it wasn't already</text><text start="39.12" dur="3.959">obvious you have to have a home brewed</text><text start="40.86" dur="4.32">Wii with boot me installed and then</text><text start="43.079" dur="4.681">you're also going to need an SD card and</text><text start="45.18" dur="5.219">a USB flash drive the two things to make</text><text start="47.76" dur="4.319">any Homebrew project successful at least</text><text start="50.399" dur="3.361">in theory anyways but yeah let's go</text><text start="52.079" dur="3.601">ahead and swap over to my computer and</text><text start="53.76" dur="3.9">we'll get started with this alright so</text><text start="55.68" dur="4.26">getting Linux installed on the Nintendo</text><text start="57.66" dur="4.02">Wii is actually relatively simple and</text><text start="59.94" dur="3.799">I'm going to kind of walk you through</text><text start="61.68" dur="4.32">that process here there are a couple of</text><text start="63.739" dur="5.74">distros that you could use Believe It or</text><text start="66" dur="5.46">Not we've got white or wheat perhaps if</text><text start="69.479" dur="4.68">you're pronouncing it like the eyes and</text><text start="71.46" dur="4.44">we but whatever whites blight and x</text><text start="74.159" dur="4.021">white now the difference between these</text><text start="75.9" dur="5.52">is uh what they're based on so white</text><text start="78.18" dur="4.86">Linux is based on Deviant and blight</text><text start="81.42" dur="4.199">Linux which is down here under third</text><text start="83.04" dur="4.259">party distros is based on gen 2. we're</text><text start="85.619" dur="5.101">going to be using x white for this video</text><text start="87.299" dur="6">because it is white Linux with a GUI</text><text start="90.72" dur="3.96">it's got X included as well so we're</text><text start="93.299" dur="3">just going to use that for this video</text><text start="94.68" dur="4.56">but theoretically you could use any of</text><text start="96.299" dur="4.981">these three with the installer which is</text><text start="99.24" dur="3.9">the far easier method of installing</text><text start="101.28" dur="4.14">Linux on the Wii you could go through</text><text start="103.14" dur="4.2">the method of manually installing one of</text><text start="105.42" dur="3.96">these other distros if you would prefer</text><text start="107.34" dur="3.599">to do that or just with white Linux or</text><text start="109.38" dur="4.86">blight Linux or whichever one that you</text><text start="110.939" dur="5.281">want but it's definitely quite the uh</text><text start="114.24" dur="3.78">ordeal that you have to go through here</text><text start="116.22" dur="3.3">and they made this installer to just</text><text start="118.02" dur="2.879">make the process a lot easier so we're</text><text start="119.52" dur="3.599">going to be taking a advantage of that</text><text start="120.899" dur="4.801">now it should be noted that all of this</text><text start="123.119" dur="4.92">info is is really old over 10 years old</text><text start="125.7" dur="4.68">okay you saw like from the date here on</text><text start="128.039" dur="4.92">which was at this page here uh this</text><text start="130.38" dur="4.74">version was released in 2008 2009 so</text><text start="132.959" dur="4.92">this stuff is like pretty old but I did</text><text start="135.12" dur="6">come across this post over on GBA temp</text><text start="137.879" dur="6.181">that was posted in 2020 that is a guide</text><text start="141.12" dur="5.46">on how to get x white Linux running on</text><text start="144.06" dur="3.96">the Wii and get Wi-Fi working which is</text><text start="146.58" dur="3.659">pretty great we're going to try that out</text><text start="148.02" dur="4.2">later on in this video as well now you</text><text start="150.239" dur="3.72">need to have a home brewed Wii with boot</text><text start="152.22" dur="3.54">me installed if you don't have a home</text><text start="153.959" dur="3.901">build a Wii I'd recommend going over to</text><text start="155.76" dur="4.199">we dot guide and following along with</text><text start="157.86" dur="3.42">the tutorial here once you get the</text><text start="159.959" dur="3">Homebrew Channel and boot me install</text><text start="161.28" dur="2.76">then you can come back to this page and</text><text start="162.959" dur="4.381">you have to download a couple things</text><text start="164.04" dur="6">from this MediaFire link there's 2.7z</text><text start="167.34" dur="4.92">files in here and one of these has to go</text><text start="170.04" dur="4.199">on your SD card one of them has to go on</text><text start="172.26" dur="3.96">your USB flash drive so we're going to</text><text start="174.239" dur="4.801">start with the SD card which should look</text><text start="176.22" dur="6.72">something like this we're going to grab</text><text start="179.04" dur="5.64">the SD card card or the apps.7z file</text><text start="182.94" dur="3.42">right here and all you gotta do is go</text><text start="184.68" dur="3.24">into your apps folder on your SD card go</text><text start="186.36" dur="3.48">into the apps folder in here and extract</text><text start="187.92" dur="4.44">this folder into the apps folder on the</text><text start="189.84" dur="3.84">SD card and that's all there is to it</text><text start="192.36" dur="3.599">this is the installer that we will run</text><text start="193.68" dur="5.699">from The Homebrew Channel now going over</text><text start="195.959" dur="5.841">to the USB drive which I have nothing on</text><text start="199.379" dur="4.561">we're going to open up the White full</text><text start="201.8" dur="4.48">linux.7z file and just extract</text><text start="203.94" dur="5.1">everything to the root of the USB drive</text><text start="206.28" dur="5.58">and there we go so what we have to do</text><text start="209.04" dur="4.68">now is take the USB drive and SD card</text><text start="211.86" dur="3.72">out of our computer put them back into</text><text start="213.72" dur="2.879">the Wii and we have to open up the</text><text start="215.58" dur="2.64">Homebrew Channel go through the</text><text start="216.599" dur="4.321">installer and then once we're done with</text><text start="218.22" dur="4.32">that we have to take the SD card out of</text><text start="220.92" dur="4.62">the Wii put it back into the computer</text><text start="222.54" dur="4.559">download this elf file it is a pal file</text><text start="225.54" dur="3.839">but the guide says it doesn't matter</text><text start="227.099" dur="5.941">apparently and then we have to replace</text><text start="229.379" dur="6">the PPC boot.elf inside of the boot me</text><text start="233.04" dur="4.74">folder on the SD card with that file and</text><text start="235.379" dur="4.021">then rename it ppcboot.elf and that will</text><text start="237.78" dur="4.319">allow us to from The Homebrew Channel</text><text start="239.4" dur="5.28">hit the home button select launch boot</text><text start="242.099" dur="4.621">me and it will then boot into Linux so</text><text start="244.68" dur="4.619">let's go ahead and try this all out and</text><text start="246.72" dur="4.86">see if it works alright so we've got the</text><text start="249.299" dur="4.5">Wii hooked up and everything set up the</text><text start="251.58" dur="3.96">SD card USB drive plugged in it's</text><text start="253.799" dur="4.56">important to note that the USB drive has</text><text start="255.54" dur="4.979">to be plugged into Port 0 which is the</text><text start="258.359" dur="4.021">bottom USB port or the right one if</text><text start="260.519" dur="4.201">you've got the console standing up so</text><text start="262.38" dur="4.68">we're going to go into the Homebrew</text><text start="264.72" dur="5.699">Channel here</text><text start="267.06" dur="5.16">and we should have our single installer</text><text start="270.419" dur="4.081">right here we're just going to run that</text><text start="272.22" dur="4.74">and click load now at this point you</text><text start="274.5" dur="5.22">have to plug in a USB keyboard to the</text><text start="276.96" dur="4.32">other USB port so let me grab that and</text><text start="279.72" dur="3.9">so it says right here it will erase the</text><text start="281.28" dur="4.08">contents of the SD card inserted so make</text><text start="283.62" dur="3.78">sure you don't have anything that you</text><text start="285.36" dur="4.02">don't want to lose on it so we're going</text><text start="287.4" dur="4.079">to say yes and it says please don't</text><text start="289.38" dur="3.42">remove the SD card nor any USB storage</text><text start="291.479" dur="3.841">device as the installer use the</text><text start="292.8" dur="4.5">following Source media and we can pretty</text><text start="295.32" dur="4.86">much go with the default options here it</text><text start="297.3" dur="5.1">defaults to 256 for the recommended size</text><text start="300.18" dur="4.32">of the fat partition that's fine with us</text><text start="302.4" dur="3.78">we're just going to do that and now we</text><text start="304.5" dur="3.84">get another warning box that says if you</text><text start="306.18" dur="6">continue all the existing data in the SD</text><text start="308.34" dur="6.24">card will be erased so we say yes and</text><text start="312.18" dur="4.86">now it's untiring so everything looks</text><text start="314.58" dur="5.58">good so far it is mentioned in the</text><text start="317.04" dur="6.379">tutorial that this will take a while so</text><text start="320.16" dur="3.259">just be prepared</text><text start="325.09" dur="5.32">[Music]</text><text start="333.32" dur="5.14">and the screen just went black but the</text><text start="336.36" dur="4.92">console's still on should I hit a key on</text><text start="338.46" dur="5.579">the keyboard sure let's do that oh okay</text><text start="341.28" dur="5.88">I just went to sleep but yeah so far on</text><text start="344.039" dur="5.88">the timer or the stopwatch rather we are</text><text start="347.16" dur="4.62">about eight minutes and and we're</text><text start="349.919" dur="3.181">halfway done so that's not I mean 16</text><text start="351.78" dur="3.73">minutes if it actually ends up being</text><text start="353.1" dur="10.28">like 16 20 minutes that's not too bad</text><text start="355.51" dur="9.409">[Music]</text><text start="363.38" dur="3.34">thank you</text><text start="364.919" dur="4.741">and there we go we're done it didn't</text><text start="366.72" dur="6.66">even take 15 minutes uh so that's pretty</text><text start="369.66" dur="6.3">great so we're going to hit OK to reboot</text><text start="373.38" dur="5.759">the video console all right and it said</text><text start="375.96" dur="5.04">that it was copying over a PPC boot.elf</text><text start="379.139" dur="4.5">file so I'm wondering if we even need to</text><text start="381" dur="4.02">copy over the version that was mentioned</text><text start="383.639" dur="3.18">in that guide we're going to see because</text><text start="385.02" dur="3.72">it said you can launch it right now from</text><text start="386.819" dur="5.481">The Homebrew Channel so</text><text start="388.74" dur="3.56">let's just try it and see</text><text start="392.58" dur="4.92">so the SD card has had the installer</text><text start="395.819" dur="3">wipe so nothing's going to show up here</text><text start="397.5" dur="4.68">but we're going to press the home button</text><text start="398.819" dur="7.681">and go down to launch boot me and we'll</text><text start="402.18" dur="8.34">see what happens yeah it's booting</text><text start="406.5" dur="5.819">and it just ejected the disk which is</text><text start="410.52" dur="3.78">interesting but yeah here it is it's</text><text start="412.319" dur="3.181">starting the desktop manager so I wonder</text><text start="414.3" dur="3.78">why</text><text start="415.5" dur="4.74">the guide said that you needed to copy</text><text start="418.08" dur="4.98">over that other elf file and by the way</text><text start="420.24" dur="4.56">this is all done off the SD card you</text><text start="423.06" dur="3.66">don't need to have the USB drive plugged</text><text start="424.8" dur="5.88">into the Wii anymore so I've plugged a</text><text start="426.72" dur="5.819">mouse into the other USB port and yeah</text><text start="430.68" dur="4.44">let's view the about information so</text><text start="432.539" dur="5.841">we'll go about xfce and this is a</text><text start="435.12" dur="8">version four copyright 0206</text><text start="438.38" dur="7.599">and yeah xfce 4 version 4.3</text><text start="443.12" dur="5.44">0.99.2 but yeah I mean here it is we've</text><text start="445.979" dur="4.381">got the dock down here we've got our</text><text start="448.56" dur="4.32">icons on the desktop we've got our</text><text start="450.36" dur="3.54">multiple desktops up here we have this</text><text start="452.88" dur="3">which</text><text start="453.9" dur="4.62">I don't actually know what oh that's a</text><text start="455.88" dur="5.28">restoring hidden Windows okay our hide</text><text start="458.52" dur="6.54">windows and show desktop all right and</text><text start="461.16" dur="6.539">yeah so let's try to go this right here</text><text start="465.06" dur="4.68">is the menu which we can get to just by</text><text start="467.699" dur="3.421">right clicking on the desktop as well so</text><text start="469.74" dur="3.179">this is the web browser it looks like</text><text start="471.12" dur="4.019">although it says it failed to execute</text><text start="472.919" dur="4.081">default web browser input output error</text><text start="475.139" dur="3.78">we're going to try in a minute here to</text><text start="477" dur="4.979">get Wi-Fi working and I'm wondering if</text><text start="478.919" dur="5.641">the other PPC boot.l file has something</text><text start="481.979" dur="4.861">to do with that I'm not sure but I mean</text><text start="484.56" dur="5.82">clearly we're here booted into Linux</text><text start="486.84" dur="6">with xfce running just fine without that</text><text start="490.38" dur="5.52">other L file so the default one seems to</text><text start="492.84" dur="5.4">work fine for for that purpose but yeah</text><text start="495.9" dur="4.26">so we've got terminal here</text><text start="498.24" dur="4.799">um let's view our apps let's see what we</text><text start="500.16" dur="5.039">got so editors we've got mouse pad and</text><text start="503.039" dur="3.901">Nano got a few net tools there oh we've</text><text start="505.199" dur="4.261">got Opera too okay well that's super</text><text start="506.94" dur="5.339">nice can we launch Opera yeah it doesn't</text><text start="509.46" dur="4.519">uh does not appear to be launching</text><text start="512.279" dur="3.961">which sucks</text><text start="513.979" dur="5.98">but we also have Let's see we got</text><text start="516.24" dur="6.12">programming we got python bash and Sh uh</text><text start="519.959" dur="5.461">sound we've got some sound stuff but</text><text start="522.36" dur="6.479">yeah you've got a few things in here uh</text><text start="525.42" dur="5.28">various tools we've got VLC which is</text><text start="528.839" dur="5.161">pretty nice can we launch that you know</text><text start="530.7" dur="6.78">I wonder could you put a DVD in and like</text><text start="534" dur="5.22">play like does it does it recognize the</text><text start="537.48" dur="4.62">disk drive I'm sure there's a better</text><text start="539.22" dur="4.32">solution for playing DVDs back on the</text><text start="542.1" dur="3.12">Wii with like some other Homebrew app</text><text start="543.54" dur="4.2">but I'm wondering if like if it even</text><text start="545.22" dur="4.679">recognizes the disk drive here alright</text><text start="547.74" dur="4.02">so quick jump cut here because I wanted</text><text start="549.899" dur="4.261">to just talk a little bit more about</text><text start="551.76" dur="4.139">this PPC boot.elf file that I was</text><text start="554.16" dur="4.44">mentioning earlier because as it turns</text><text start="555.899" dur="4.981">out there is a very good reason why we</text><text start="558.6" dur="4.2">have to change out the file with the one</text><text start="560.88" dur="3.86">that the text tutorial guide mentioned</text><text start="562.8" dur="3.979">and that's because the installer we used</text><text start="564.74" dur="4.96">installs version</text><text start="566.779" dur="4.421">2.6.27 of the Linux kernel but the</text><text start="569.7" dur="3.06">latest version of the Linux kernel that</text><text start="571.2" dur="4.28">was compiled for the Wii at least</text><text start="572.76" dur="5.34">through this project was</text><text start="575.48" dur="4.66">2.6.32 and that's the version that is</text><text start="578.1" dur="4.62">contained in the elf file that the text</text><text start="580.14" dur="5.16">guide points to it's known as the mini</text><text start="582.72" dur="4.38">kernel preview 5 and it contains some</text><text start="585.3" dur="4.5">enhancements over previous versions</text><text start="587.1" dur="5.64">notably it has experimental support for</text><text start="589.8" dur="6">the Wii's DVD drive and updated support</text><text start="592.74" dur="4.92">for the Wii's Wi-Fi adapter so I went</text><text start="595.8" dur="4.56">ahead and copied over that file to the</text><text start="597.66" dur="4.2">SD card and replace the existing one and</text><text start="600.36" dur="3.659">even though the text guide claims it</text><text start="646.38" dur="5.1">yeah here we are so we're going to</text><text start="649.5" dur="4.14">immediately I've got the text guide</text><text start="651.48" dur="3.96">pulled up start="659.339" dur="5.161">so we're going to try that out and see</text><text start="661.92" dur="5.76">if that is doable but first let's just</text><text start="664.5" dur="5.94">try browser</text><text start="673.26" dur="4.62">um I'm gonna guess well this is xfce</text><text start="675.48" dur="5.7">though yeah I don't know but yeah it</text><text start="677.88" dur="4.92">says input output error and we go to we</text><text start="681.18" dur="4.14">go to apps here</text><text start="682.8" dur="4.5">and go to net and we go to Opera I</text><text start="685.32" dur="4.32">wonder what ice weasel is is this a web</text><text start="687.3" dur="5.52">browser yeah iceweasel web browser so</text><text start="689.64" dur="4.86">that is that is another web browser oh</text><text start="692.82" dur="4.259">there we go it's starting up look at</text><text start="694.5" dur="4.86">that this looks like it's Firefox based</text><text start="697.079" dur="6.601">yeah this is definitely Firefox based</text><text start="699.36" dur="6.599">it's Mozilla 5.0 right here and yeah</text><text start="703.68" dur="5.76">let's uh let's just minimize this for</text><text start="705.959" dur="5.661">now the guide tells us to completely log</text><text start="709.44" dur="4.62">out of the account we're logged into now</text><text start="711.62" dur="4.24">and then just log into the root account</text><text start="714.06" dur="4.2">I wonder what account we're logged so we gotta log in as roots</text><text start="728.279" dur="5.281">and the password is white</text><text start="730.459" dur="4.481">w-h-i-i-t-e and there we go so now if we</text><text we're logged into</text><text start="748.14" dur="3.12">the root account and we've got this tips</text><text start="750" dur="3.06">and tricks thing that came up it doesn't</text><text start="751.26" dur="3.9">look like there are any tips or tricks</text><text start="753.06" dur="5.82">in here but anyways let's go to terminal</text><text start="755.16" dur="5.64">here and let's begin by typing what is</text><text start="758.88" dur="6.12">our first command we have to change</text><text start="760.8" dur="9.9">directory to the uh home slash we and we</text><text start="765" dur="7.8">gotta run dpkg Dash I star Dot d-e-b</text><text start="770.7" dur="4.439">all right so that's finished we gotta</text><text start="772.8" dur="5.64">change directory back to the roots now</text><text start="775.139" dur="5.82">we gotta run a tar command</text><text start="778.44" dur="4.26">thank God for being able to press tab to</text><text start="780.959" dur="5.101">auto complete and now we have to run</text><text start="782.7" dur="4.639">Nano to edit a configuration file</text><text start="786.06" dur="2.839">Etc network</text><text start="787.339" dur="4.541">interfaces</text><text start="788.899" dur="5.321">and this shows you how rudimentary that</text><text start="791.88" dur="5.94">this is because we have to type in the</text><text start="794.22" dur="5.82">SSID and password into here then we</text><text start="797.82" dur="4.74">gotta get out of that we want to say yes</text><text start="800.04" dur="4.979">Save Right to that and there we go so</text><text start="802.56" dur="5.88">yeah there's no like uh you know Network</text><text start="805.019" dur="4.801">search program or interface of any kind</text><text start="808.44" dur="3.12">in this like is there anything in</text><text start="809.82" dur="3.84">settings for Network like there's the</text><text start="811.56" dur="4.32">settings manager okay you got keyboard</text><text start="813.66" dur="4.14">mouse file manager display okay well we</text><text start="815.88" dur="4.86">can change the start="822.899" dur="6.901">there's nothing in here about you know</text><text start="825.42" dur="6.359">network uh so let's just see if we are</text><text start="829.8" dur="4.44">on the network let's try to open up that</text><text start="831.779" dur="6.24">browser that actually opened up which is</text><text start="834.24" dur="5.399">here under uh net iceweasel and let's</text><text start="838.019" dur="2.94">hope that well actually I guess we could</text><text start="839.639" dur="3.861">just go to terminal here and try to run</text><text start="840.959" dur="2.541">a ping</text><text start="843.959" dur="4.44">unknown host that is not a good sign you</text><text start="846.779" dur="4.201">know I wonder do I wonder if we gotta</text><text start="848.399" dur="6.18">restart that would that would actually</text><text start="850.98" dur="6.12">make sense failed to bring up wlan0 oh</text><text start="854.579" dur="4.921">gosh okay so the Wii account is the</text><text start="857.1" dur="5.58">default account that it makes okay ping</text><text start="859.5" dur="5.1">google.com unknown host all right so</text><text start="862.68" dur="6.12">we're Force powering off the Wii again</text><text start="864.6" dur="8.039">because I have just temporarily changed</text><text start="868.8" dur="7.339">my Wi-Fi network to use WPA and WPA2</text><text start="872.639" dur="7.081">instead of just solely WPA2 keyword is</text><text start="876.139" dur="6.82">temporarily so we're going to try this</text><text start="879.72" dur="7.859">again once the network comes back online</text><text start="882.959" dur="6.781">and we will see if it's just the</text><text start="887.579" dur="4.141">security protocol that's causing the</text><text start="889.74" dur="5.52">issue but again the we can connect to it</text><text start="891.72" dur="6.359">just fine without it being set to WPA</text><text start="895.26" dur="5.4">and WPA2 but I'm guessing maybe we Linux</text><text start="898.079" dur="4.981">is is not that way I was thinking of</text><text start="900.66" dur="4.2">trying to use the Wii's ethernet adapter</text><text start="903.06" dur="3.6">because I have one of those because I've</text><text start="904.86" dur="3.419">tried to do Network stuff on the Wii</text><text start="906.66" dur="4.739">before you guys may remember back in</text><text start="908.279" dur="4.92">2021 we tried to use some third-party</text><text start="911.399" dur="4.74">web browsers on this thing and that</text><text start="913.199" dur="7.2">failed in utter disaster but as a result</text><text start="916.139" dur="6.421">of that I I have a the wheeze USB wired</text><text start="920.399" dur="5.161">Network ethernet module I don't know why</text><text start="922.56" dur="5.519">I just made that too start="930.899" dur="3.781">about this at least from what I've read</text><text start="932.639" dur="3.721">but we can try it anyway because I've</text><text start="934.68" dur="3.719">got a network switch right here that we</text><text start="936.36" dur="4.2">could hook this up to and honestly I</text><text start="938.399" dur="4.201">much prefer ethernet for everything</text><text start="940.56" dur="4.26">because it's just so much more</text><text start="942.6" dur="4.32">convenient and uh of course when you</text><text start="944.82" dur="4.92">have access to easy access to an</text><text start="946.92" dur="5.94">Ethernet Jack okay it failed to bring up</text><text start="949.74" dur="4.86">ET failed to bring up WLAN zero done
