install os/2 on</text><text start="4.049" dur="11.941">this old IBM warmup the CRT it&amp;#39;s time</text><text start="7.14" dur="11.219">for another episode ever heard of os/2</text><text start="15.99" dur="4.049">it&amp;#39;s pretty obscure but it played an</text><text start="18.359" dur="4.26">important part of modern computing</text><text start="20.039" dur="4.591">history I&amp;#39;ve never seen os/2 in the wild</text><text start="22.619" dur="3.841">and I wanted to play around with it as a</text><text start="24.63" dur="3.479">fortunate coincidence I have a machine</text><text start="26.46" dur="4.11">in my collection that was designed for</text><text start="28.109" dur="3.99">and originally came with os/2 so it</text><text start="30.57" dur="3.93">seemed like the perfect opportunity to</text><text start="32.099" dur="3.931">see what it&amp;#39;s about but before we dig in</text><text start="34.5" dur="4.05">let&amp;#39;s talk a bit about the machine we&amp;#39;re</text><text start="36.03" dur="6.75">going to install it on this is the IBM</text><text start="38.55" dur="6.599">ps/2 model 76 it sports an Intel 486 33</text><text start="42.78" dur="4.65">megahertz processor 24 megabytes of RAM</text><text start="45.149" dur="4.171">and a 2 gigabyte skuzzy hard drive it</text><text start="47.43" dur="4.08">came from Ford Motor Corporation and had</text><text start="49.32" dur="2.489">windows 95 and an Ethernet card added to</text><text start="51.51" dur="2.549">it</text><text start="51.809" dur="3.39">judging by the grime on the keyboard it</text><text start="54.059" dur="2.82">came from a dealership</text><text start="55.199" dur="3.421">it&amp;#39;s a neat part of my collection and</text><text start="56.879" dur="4.141">complements my other original IBM</text><text start="58.62" dur="4.02">hardware before I started with os/2 I</text><text start="61.02" dur="3.959">wanted to preserve the contents of the</text><text start="62.64" dur="4.019">hard drive I figured the easiest way was</text><text start="64.979" dur="3.301">to just replace it and the best way to</text><text start="66.659" dur="4.14">do that was a scuzzy to flash memory</text><text start="68.28" dur="4.23">solution I&amp;#39;ll touch on the process to</text><text start="70.799" dur="3.601">get the scuzzy to flash solution to work</text><text start="72.51" dur="5.37">but if you want to skip forward os/2</text><text start="74.4" dur="6.24">just click this thing the device I used</text><text start="77.88" dur="4.65">is literally called scuzzy to SD it&amp;#39;s a</text><text start="80.64" dur="3.659">custom board that connects to the 50 pin</text><text start="82.53" dur="4.26">internal ribbon cable of your system and</text><text start="84.299" dur="4.291">emulates a scuzzy hard drive you use the</text><text start="86.79" dur="3.75">downloadable utility to set the size of</text><text start="88.59" dur="4.62">the partitions update the firmware and</text><text start="90.54" dur="4.05">more after that you just pop in an SD</text><text start="93.21" dur="3.54">card hook it up to your system and</text><text start="94.59" dur="3.989">you&amp;#39;re set with this machine however we</text><text start="96.75" dur="3.96">have a little problem because it&amp;#39;s BIOS</text><text start="98.579" dur="3.36">code lives on the hard drive if you</text><text start="100.71" dur="3.449">replace the drive you&amp;#39;ll find the</text><text start="101.939" dur="3.841">machine magically stops working you have</text><text start="104.159" dur="3.811">to somehow transfer the code from the</text><text start="105.78" dur="3.629">original drive to the new one it took a</text><text start="107.97" dur="3.859">bit of research to find out how to do it</text><text start="109.409" dur="5.25">but luckily IBM made this fairly easy</text><text start="111.829" dur="4.241">pressing control insert during post with</text><text start="114.659" dur="3.091">the original drive in the machine gets</text><text start="116.07" dur="4.14">you into utilities that allow you to</text><text start="117.75" dur="3.689">create special floppy disks these disks</text><text start="120.21" dur="3.42">are used to boot the machine and write</text><text start="121.439" dur="3.96">the bias to a new drive with that out of</text><text start="123.63" dur="3.48">the way the computer recognizes the</text><text start="125.399" dur="5.371">scuzzy 2 SD device and we&amp;#39;re in business</text><text start="127.11" dur="5.099">now let&amp;#39;s get back to os/2 os/2 was</text><text start="130.77" dur="3.15">originally developed jointly by</text><text start="132.209" dur="4.741">Microsoft and IBM as a modern</text><text start="133.92" dur="4.95">placement for ms-dos its name short for</text><text start="136.95" dur="4.05">operating system - was a marketing</text><text start="138.87" dur="5.43">tie-in to IBM&amp;#39;s PC systems at the time</text><text start="141" dur="5.4">branded personal system - os/2 used</text><text start="144.3" dur="3.96">protected mode to natively unlike das</text><text start="146.4" dur="4.589">which nominally used real mode</text><text start="148.26" dur="4.77">this made os/2 in theory anyway more</text><text start="150.989" dur="4.981">reliable than das with better support</text><text start="153.03" dur="4.709">for modern hardware that said a primary</text><text start="155.97" dur="3.72">driver during development was to ensure</text><text start="157.739" dur="3.361">compatibility with DOS applications to</text><text start="159.69" dur="4.049">take advantage of the sizable das</text><text start="161.1" dur="5">software library and at an API level it</text><text start="163.739" dur="4.921">mimics ms-dos to facilitate this as</text><text start="166.1" dur="4.15">development of the OS continued IBM and</text><text start="168.66" dur="4.17">Microsoft had differing opinions of what</text><text start="170.25" dur="3.63">the OS should be in the end they parted</text><text start="172.83" dur="3.75">ways on the project</text><text start="173.88" dur="4.05">IBM continued to develop the os/2 line</text><text start="176.58" dur="3.18">of operating systems while Microsoft</text><text start="177.93" dur="3.36">took their version reworked it</text><text start="179.76" dur="3.78">significantly and came out with Windows</text><text start="181.29" dur="5.31">NT a series of operating systems that</text><text start="183.54" dur="5.22">exist to this day so whatever happened</text><text start="186.6" dur="5.1">to os/2 would you believe me if I told</text><text start="188.76" dur="5.67">you it was still around that&amp;#39;s right the</text><text start="191.7" dur="4.349">old beast still exists despite its age</text><text start="194.43" dur="3.99">IBM only dropped official support in</text><text start="196.049" dur="3.921">2006 and still gives defect support for</text><text start="198.42" dur="4.409">a fee because of its incredible</text><text start="199.97" dur="5.53">reliability it&amp;#39;s running inside ATMs and</text><text start="202.829" dur="4.081">embedded systems of all kinds supposedly</text><text start="205.5" dur="3.54">it even runs parts of the New York</text><text start="206.91" dur="3.93">subway system you can still get</text><text start="209.04" dur="4.05">relatively modern versions in the form</text><text start="210.84" dur="4.98">of e comm station and ARCA AHS to</text><text start="213.09" dur="3.84">authorize systems based on os/2 how&amp;#39;s</text><text start="215.82" dur="3.87">that for longevity</text><text start="216.93" dur="5.25">since this machine came with version 2.0</text><text start="219.69" dur="5.43">I installed that first I also tried out</text><text start="222.18" dur="4.95">os/2 warp installing either version is</text><text start="225.12" dur="3.78">pretty straightforward you use the</text><text start="227.13" dur="3.99">installation floppies to install version</text><text start="228.9" dur="4.74">2 and a boot floppy with CD to install</text><text start="231.12" dur="5.369">warp you should be able to find these</text><text start="233.64" dur="4.77">online here&amp;#39;s a time-lapse of the</text><text start="236.489" dur="4.571">install of warp because the process is</text><text start="238.41" dur="4.71">really rather boring</text><text start="241.06" dur="2.06">you</text><text start="247.41" dur="8.9">[Music]</text><text start="256.42" dur="5.11">now that we&amp;#39;ve done the install let&amp;#39;s</text><text start="258.95" dur="6.27">take a look at both versions all right</text><text start="261.53" dur="6.3">so here we are booting up OS to version</text><text start="265.22" dur="4.74">2.0 the version of os/2 that this</text><text start="267.83" dur="2.58">computer was theoretically designed to</text><text start="269.96" dur="3.12">run</text><text start="270.41" dur="4.62">there&amp;#39;s our pretty boot screen with the</text><text start="273.08" dur="4.5">os/2 logo and multiple different colors</text><text start="275.03" dur="4.05">I always found it funny how when these</text><text start="277.58" dur="3.42">old loading street screens they say</text><text start="279.08" dur="4.41">please wait they&amp;#39;re like please don&amp;#39;t</text><text start="281" dur="4.29">get upset at us that this machine is</text><text start="283.49" dur="3.96">insanely slow and takes forever to load</text><text start="285.29" dur="3.69">this guy takes a little while but it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="287.45" dur="3.36">actually quite a bit faster than you</text><text start="288.98" dur="4.05">might expect because we are loading from</text><text start="290.81" dur="4.95">flash so there&amp;#39;s really no head weight</text><text start="293.03" dur="5.97">it&amp;#39;s pushing data as fast as the scuzzy</text><text start="295.76" dur="6.45">interface can push it we have our mouse</text><text start="299" dur="4.74">cursor here neat to see that the mouse</text><text start="302.21" dur="3.3">cursor is black with white border</text><text start="303.74" dur="4.68">instead of the other way around my being</text><text start="305.51" dur="6.12">really didn&amp;#39;t want to do do the do the</text><text start="308.42" dur="6.39">windows convention there and here is our</text><text start="311.63" dur="5.01">our entire operating system it is pretty</text><text start="314.81" dur="4.29">sparse as you can see the design is</text><text start="316.64" dur="5.34">similar to the way Windows 3.1 works</text><text start="319.1" dur="4.2">when it has minimized windows as a</text><text start="321.98" dur="7.29">matter of fact you can even see that</text><text start="323.3" dur="8.85">here the system is set up so that you&amp;#39;ve</text><text start="329.27" dur="5.1">got like the os/2 system here which is</text><text start="332.15" dur="4.08">similar to I guess you would call it</text><text start="334.37" dur="3.6">kind of like the program manager so you</text><text start="336.23" dur="3.87">can go in and see the applications that</text><text start="337.97" dur="4.8">are on the machine</text><text start="340.1" dur="7.59">you&amp;#39;ve got the shredder here which is</text><text start="342.77" dur="7.79">somewhat analogous to oh I don&amp;#39;t know</text><text start="347.69" dur="6.56">kind of analogous to the trash or the</text><text start="350.56" dur="8.44">recycle bin on other operating systems</text><text start="354.25" dur="7.03">go ahead and close that and help is</text><text start="359" dur="3.87">built in obviously because you&amp;#39;re going</text><text start="361.28" dur="3.12">to need it to figure out this operating</text><text start="362.87" dur="3.51">system because it is a little bit weird</text><text start="364.4" dur="3.75">it&amp;#39;s a little different it&amp;#39;s easy enough</text><text start="366.38" dur="3.9">to get around if you just think for a</text><text start="368.15" dur="3.72">minute you&amp;#39;ve got your window controls</text><text start="370.28" dur="4.26">up here which are a little bit different</text><text start="371.87" dur="4.47">they&amp;#39;re similar to what you might see in</text><text start="374.54" dur="3.6">other operating systems but the the</text><text start="376.34" dur="3.78">glyphs are different</text><text start="378.14" dur="4.38">you got your closed menu in the upper</text><text start="380.12" dur="5.299">left again similar to Windows 3.1 heck</text><text start="382.52" dur="7.8">it even looks like a Windows 3.1</text><text start="385.419" dur="9.28">3.1 men using the standard go windows</text><text start="390.32" dur="6.96">font there and everything closed there</text><text start="394.699" dur="3.901">and it closes it out that&amp;#39;s really all</text><text start="397.28" dur="2.73">there is to it you know if you have your</text><text start="398.6" dur="3.12">applications installed they&amp;#39;re going to</text><text start="400.01" dur="5.79">be in here you&amp;#39;ll have an icon on the</text><text start="401.72" dur="6.81">desktop here let&amp;#39;s see what a minimized</text><text start="405.8" dur="6.679">window looks like double click that and</text><text start="408.53" dur="3.949">it doesn&amp;#39;t look like that at all</text><text start="412.72" dur="4.569">so yeah even I&amp;#39;m having a problems</text><text start="415.639" dur="6.721">figuring out how this is supposed to</text><text start="417.289" dur="7.921">work exactly but that&amp;#39;s fine close that</text><text start="422.36" dur="5.13">and that&amp;#39;s really all there is to os/2</text><text start="425.21" dur="3.6">2.0 it&amp;#39;s pretty flat and when you want</text><text start="427.49" dur="4.83">to shut this down it&amp;#39;s the funniest</text><text start="428.81" dur="4.8">thing there is no user interface here at</text><text start="432.32" dur="3.15">all if it helped you figure out how to</text><text start="433.61" dur="4.26">shut it down you have to right-click in</text><text start="435.47" dur="6.509">the middle of the screen here and select</text><text start="437.87" dur="6">shut down and then hit OK you gotta love</text><text start="441.979" dur="4.201">this message - are you sure you want to</text><text start="443.87" dur="5.7">close or select ok to continue shutdown</text><text start="446.18" dur="5.22">select cancel to end this task good on</text><text start="449.57" dur="3.93">the IBM from being super official</text><text start="451.4" dur="6.44">informal there so we&amp;#39;ll go ahead and</text><text start="453.5" dur="6.96">click OK and end our os/2 2.0 session</text><text start="457.84" dur="4.6">please wait shut down still in progress</text><text start="460.46" dur="4.8">do not touch that power button oh my</text><text start="462.44" dur="5.01">gosh you might break it or something and</text><text start="465.26" dur="5.48">now there it is ready to be shut off so</text><text start="467.45" dur="5.67">now let&amp;#39;s take a look at oh s 24.0 warp</text><text start="470.74" dur="6.22">all right so let&amp;#39;s load up</text><text start="473.12" dur="5.87">os/2 4.0 warp you can see the boot</text><text start="476.96" dur="5.87">screens a little bit different and</text><text start="478.99" dur="6.7">there&amp;#39;s our os/2 warp boot screen</text><text start="482.83" dur="5.05">beautiful Bezier curve on the font they</text><text start="485.69" dur="5.789">got there just the tip top of the</text><text start="487.88" dur="5.819">mid-90s technology so this is going to</text><text start="491.479" dur="5.071">take a little while to load because it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="493.699" dur="10.081">poor ol computer slow but will bear with</text><text start="496.55" dur="9.75">it all right now we&amp;#39;re loading up the</text><text start="503.78" dur="4.77">desktop got to love that waiting cursor</text><text start="506.3" dur="5.85">it&amp;#39;s an entire clock none of this watch</text><text start="508.55" dur="6.15">or hourglass uh for IBM no no we got to</text><text start="512.15" dur="6">go with the full wall clock that looks</text><text start="514.7" dur="5.39">like a monitor whatever</text><text start="518.15" dur="4.35">IBM was really never known for their</text><text start="520.09" dur="5.17">striking industrial design they just</text><text start="522.5" dur="6.38">basically made stuff that worked so this</text><text start="525.26" dur="3.62">will take a little bit to load up here</text><text start="530.14" dur="7.81">cue the jeopardy music in the background</text><text start="533.54" dur="8.25">while we&amp;#39;re waiting I guess there we go</text><text start="537.95" dur="8.22">desktop background and icons and</text><text start="541.79" dur="7.71">everything so this is os/2 4.0 or as</text><text start="546.17" dur="6.06">they call it all your standard icons and</text><text start="549.5" dur="5.4">stuff there so let&amp;#39;s take a quick quick</text><text start="552.23" dur="4.83">look at this first major thing is though</text><text start="554.9" dur="4.86">as to warp a menu up here this is a</text><text start="557.06" dur="4.86">range kind of like the Windows Start</text><text start="559.76" dur="4.29">menu a little bit you got certain</text><text start="561.92" dur="5.04">applications that have their own hot</text><text start="564.05" dur="4.98">menus here program shows your program</text><text start="566.96" dur="6.3">lists os/2 system you can kind of think</text><text start="569.03" dur="6.63">of this a little bit like the control</text><text start="573.26" dur="3.6">panel but not exactly connections will</text><text start="575.66" dur="3.27">show you connections to your different</text><text start="576.86" dur="5.16">devices in assistance center is your</text><text start="578.93" dur="5.04">help this up here I guess you would</text><text start="582.02" dur="4.14">consider it the taskbar although it</text><text start="583.97" dur="5.28">doesn&amp;#39;t really function that way it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="586.16" dur="6.72">more of a shortcut bar that has links to</text><text start="589.25" dur="7.08">everything that&amp;#39;s already on this menu</text><text start="592.88" dur="5.19">again for whatever reason this was more</text><text start="596.33" dur="3.51">geared towards your power user so though</text><text start="598.07" dur="3">you know everyday users might get some</text><text start="599.84" dur="3.9">use out of this they&amp;#39;re not really going</text><text start="601.07" dur="6.21">to be looking looking for all the stuff</text><text start="603.74" dur="5.49">on here they really don&amp;#39;t care this</text><text start="607.28" dur="4.95">shows you know your your drive and your</text><text start="609.23" dur="5.97">CPU usage and all that a couple weird</text><text start="612.23" dur="6.42">little things about the the way this</text><text start="615.2" dur="6.32">works as far as user interface paradigm</text><text start="618.65" dur="6.09">let&amp;#39;s let&amp;#39;s open up an application here</text><text start="621.52" dur="5.74">will open up this user interface looks</text><text start="624.74" dur="6.54">kind of similar to I don&amp;#39;t know Windows</text><text start="627.26" dur="6.38">NT 4 or Windows 95 a little bit you have</text><text start="631.28" dur="4.5">the icons here or the</text><text start="633.64" dur="5.14">controls here a little bit different</text><text start="635.78" dur="6.75">this menu still looks like a Windows 3.5</text><text start="638.78" dur="5.34">menu and moving icons around on the</text><text start="642.53" dur="4.26">desktop is really weird you gotta like</text><text start="644.12" dur="6.39">right-click it and select pickup and</text><text start="646.79" dur="5.05">then you get this this briefcase thing</text><text start="650.51" dur="7.57">and then you click</text><text start="651.84" dur="8.15">you want it to go and you hit drop here</text><text start="658.08" dur="5.25">and moves it that&amp;#39;s weird you can&amp;#39;t like</text><text start="659.99" dur="6.67">drag-and-drop icons it&amp;#39;s really really</text><text start="663.33" dur="5.88">funky of course comes with Netscape</text><text start="666.66" dur="4.5">Navigator pre-installed or the get thing</text><text start="669.21" dur="5.19">for it and then web Explorer which is</text><text start="671.16" dur="5.4">IBM&amp;#39;s IBM&amp;#39;s browser now I couldn&amp;#39;t get</text><text start="674.4" dur="3.54">the ethernet card to work on this so I</text><text start="676.56" dur="2.7">can&amp;#39;t really browse the web with it but</text><text start="677.94" dur="3.149">apparently you can get a relatively</text><text start="679.26" dur="3.15">up-to-date version of Firefox you can</text><text start="681.089" dur="4.771">actually surf the web on this thing</text><text start="682.41" dur="5.25">which is kind of amazing to shut this</text><text start="685.86" dur="3.36">one down it&amp;#39;s a little bit easier than I</text><text start="687.66" dur="3.69">was - version 2 we have a dedicated</text><text start="689.22" dur="3.99">button for that so we just click that</text><text start="691.35" dur="6.12">there are you sure you want to shut it</text><text start="693.21" dur="5.12">down we hit yes and it shuts down pretty</text><text start="697.47" dur="4.95">easy</text><text start="698.33" dur="8.05">well that&amp;#39;s OS os/2 4.0 warp in a</text><text start="702.42" dur="5.31">nutshell os/2 is pretty nifty and had a</text><text start="706.38" dur="3.149">great deal of promise to be the</text><text start="707.73" dur="3.48">operating system the future but</text><text start="709.529" dur="4.471">Microsoft&amp;#39;s keen marketing and business</text><text start="711.21" dur="3.75">sense put a kibosh on that today windows</text><text start="714" dur="3.12">reigned supreme</text><text start="714.96" dur="3.84">but under the hood of any modern Windows</text><text start="717.12" dur="5.37">machine is a little bit of the soul of</text><text start="718.8" dur="5.67">os/2 so in a way it lives on well that&amp;#39;s</text><text start="722.49" dur="3.63">all for today&amp;#39;s video while you&amp;#39;re
