start="33.899" dur="3.721">a look at this really interesting</text><text start="35.64" dur="5.4">machine that I&amp;#39;ve been trying to get a</text><text start="37.62" dur="6.3">hold of for years soup it up a bit and</text><text start="41.04" dur="5.16">Marvel at how an obscure machine was</text><text start="43.92" dur="4.2">pretty much the Genesis of everything we</text><text start="46.2" start="71.1" dur="6.3">complete with its matching 17-inch</text><text start="73.7" dur="5.14">megapixel color display and today we&amp;#39;re</text><text start="77.4" dur="4.259">going to soup it up a little bit and</text><text start="78.84" dur="4.5">sort out a few of its weird issues and</text><text start="81.659" dur="3.96">then play around with it and see what it</text><text start="83.34" dur="5.52">was like to use the finest Unix machine</text><text start="85.619" dur="6.601">that 1990 had to offer let&amp;#39;s start with</text><text start="88.86" dur="6.42">an abbreviated history this thing is an</text><text start="92.22" dur="5.82">obscure unixie workstation from 1990 but</text><text start="95.28" dur="5.58">it had a surprisingly outsized impact on</text><text start="98.04" dur="5.64">the overall history of computing the</text><text start="100.86" dur="4.439">short version is that in 1985 Steve Jobs</text><text start="103.68" dur="3.78">was forced out of the company he</text><text start="105.299" dur="4.5">co-founded Apple computer</text><text start="107.46" dur="4.68">and instead of slinking off into the</text><text start="109.799" dur="4.881">sunset with millions of dollars in Apple</text><text start="112.14" dur="6.119">shares he founded a new computer company</text><text start="114.68" dur="7.36">NeXT in 1998 they released their first</text><text start="118.259" dur="6.421">computer the iconic Cube</text><text start="122.04" dur="5.34">these things are stupid</text><text start="124.68" dur="5.939">a super powerful spare no expense</text><text start="127.38" dur="5.7">workstation with a brand new Unix based</text><text start="130.619" dur="5.7">operating system called Next Step It</text><text start="133.08" dur="6.6">retailed for the equivalent of 15</text><text start="136.319" dur="5.521">000 in today&amp;#39;s money and use the same</text><text start="139.68" dur="6.059">processor as a lot of Macs at the time</text><text start="141.84" dur="7.38">the 68030 it targeted big business and</text><text start="145.739" dur="5.941">universities doing big sciency stuff and</text><text start="149.22" dur="5.04">it didn&amp;#39;t sell very well but it left an</text><text start="151.68" dur="4.32">incredible mark on Computing in the very</text><text start="154.26" dur="4.979">short time it was actually on the market</text><text start="156" dur="5.64">Tim berners-lee used a next machine as</text><text start="159.239" dur="5.64">the first server on what would become</text><text start="161.64" dur="5.879">the web in software developed doom on a</text><text start="164.879" dur="5.701">next computer and even the modern Mac OS</text><text start="167.519" dur="5.341">has quite a bit of next DNA in it which</text><text start="170.58" dur="4.92">actually did a video on way back when</text><text start="172.86" dur="4.739">I&amp;#39;ll link that right here this new</text><text start="175.5" dur="4.26">company though eventually felt the sting</text><text start="177.599" dur="4.381">of trying to push fifteen thousand</text><text start="179.76" dur="3.839">dollar computers on universities and</text><text start="181.98" dur="2.82">trying to make a profit with that</text><text start="183.599" dur="3.601">somehow</text><text start="184.8" dur="5.04">so they released less expensive machines</text><text start="187.2" dur="5.1">like this color next station I have here</text><text start="189.84" dur="4.5">although even this didn&amp;#39;t last very long</text><text start="192.3" dur="4.439">they eventually gave up on Hardware</text><text start="194.34" dur="4.619">altogether and just focused on selling</text><text start="196.739" dur="5.461">the next step operating system which was</text><text start="198.959" dur="5.461">quite Innovative actually and then they</text><text start="202.2" dur="4.74">famously sold the company back to Apple</text><text start="204.42" dur="6.3">setting the stage for Steve Jobs to</text><text start="206.94" dur="5.46">retake the CEO Reigns and start chucking</text><text start="210.72" dur="4.22">iPods at us</text><text start="212.4" dur="2.54">here</text><text start="215.18" dur="5.559">well today we&amp;#39;re gonna pause in that</text><text start="218.159" dur="4.261">brief moment of time when next was still</text><text start="220.739" dur="3.42">a computer company and we&amp;#39;re going to</text><text start="222.42" dur="3.599">show some love to this</text><text start="224.159" dur="4.561">pretty interesting machine right here</text><text start="226.019" dur="5.341">because it does have a few issues like</text><text start="228.72" dur="4.2">an aging spinning hard drive that sounds</text><text start="231.36" dur="4.099">like it&amp;#39;s about to give up the ghost at</text><text start="232.92" dur="2.539">any moment</text><text start="236.099" dur="4.261">and this monitor only actually we&amp;#39;ve used quite a</text><text start="330.539" dur="5.701">bit on this channel which lets a scuzzy</text><text start="333.479" dur="5.041">machine see an SD card as if it were a</text><text start="336.24" dur="5.16">hard drive and there are a lot of</text><text start="338.52" dur="5.06">complicated configurable parameters that</text><text start="341.4" dur="4.859">you can switch about on these things</text><text start="343.58" dur="6.58">fortunately one of my all-time favorite</text><text start="346.259" dur="6.72">YouTubers control out Rhys has created a</text><text start="350.16" dur="4.68">guide specifically on what fiddly</text><text start="352.979" dur="3.961">settings you need to set on this thing</text><text start="354.84" dur="6.72">and I think I want to swap out this</text><text start="356.94" dur="7.74">Behemoth of a CRT for a nice LCD I&amp;#39;d</text><text start="361.56" dur="5.1">love to fix this thing but honestly this</text><text start="364.68" dur="4.799">thing weighs a ton and it&amp;#39;s made of</text><text start="366.66" dur="5.22">extremely fragile plastic that&amp;#39;s already</text><text start="369.479" dur="5.401">cracking so I&amp;#39;m terrified to take it</text><text start="371.88" dur="6.12">apart that&amp;#39;s an Endeavor for future Sean</text><text start="374.88" dur="4.86">but swapping in an LCD isn&amp;#39;t as simple</text><text start="378" dur="4.259">as you might think</text><text start="379.74" dur="4.799">first it has to support synchron green</text><text start="382.259" dur="5.16">which is kind of uncommon even more</text><text start="384.539" dur="5.821">Uncommon is the fixed resolution that</text><text start="387.419" dur="6.06">the next station runs at it&amp;#39;s 11 20 by</text><text start="390.36" dur="5.459">832 and that&amp;#39;s all you get good luck</text><text start="393.479" dur="4.081">finding a monitor that has any idea what</text><text start="395.819" dur="3.841">to do with that I thought I found the</text><text start="397.56" dur="5.24">perfect one</text><text start="399.66" dur="3.14">oh God it&amp;#39;s so heavy</text><text start="405" dur="4.5">ah so close</text><text start="407.4" dur="5.22">yet so far</text><text start="409.5" dur="5.039">it sinks on green but it can&amp;#39;t make this</text><text start="412.62" dur="4.5">goofball resolution work</text><text start="414.539" dur="6.621">fortunately after a ton of very</text><text start="417.12" dur="4.04">impressive trial and error</text><text start="422.88" dur="4.62">oh yeah now that&amp;#39;s nice</text><text start="425.4" dur="4.799">this is the only LCD that I&amp;#39;ve found</text><text start="427.5" dur="5.759">that doesn&amp;#39;t skew the picture too thin</text><text start="430.199" dur="5.041">or cut off the top and the bottom I mean</text><text start="433.259" dur="4.44">it&amp;#39;s not absolutely perfect because</text><text start="435.24" dur="4.799">there still is a bit of a border around</text><text start="437.699" dur="4.741">the edges but a CRT has a border like</text><text start="440.039" dur="4.801">this as well so it kind of looks fine</text><text start="442.44" dur="5.52">the only imperfection here there&amp;#39;s a bit</text><text start="444.84" dur="6.24">of a scratch on the screen but it&amp;#39;s not</text><text start="447.96" dur="7.139">too distracting it&amp;#39;s also very bright</text><text start="451.08" dur="9.36">and crisp although not perfectly crisp</text><text start="455.099" dur="8.04">but much sharper than that old tired CRT</text><text start="460.44" dur="5.699">all right so we are going to be swapping</text><text start="463.139" dur="6.481">out that noisy hard drive for a scuzzy</text><text start="466.139" dur="5.881">to SD but scuzzy to SD isn&amp;#39;t the only</text><text start="469.62" dur="5.46">option here in fact you could use</text><text start="472.02" dur="7.26">something like a blue scuzzy just as</text><text start="475.08" dur="7.14">well or an Azul scuzzy and in fact by</text><text start="479.28" dur="5.759">happy coincidence Macintosh librarian is</text><text start="482.22" dur="5.52">doing this exact same thing right now</text><text start="485.039" dur="6.121">with an internal and external blue</text><text start="487.74" dur="5.459">scuzzy on next machine so uh yeah I&amp;#39;ll</text><text start="491.16" dur="4.08">definitely link her videos down below</text><text start="493.199" dur="5.34">once they&amp;#39;re posted</text><text start="495.24" dur="5.519">but I want to follow Reese&amp;#39;s Guide to</text><text start="498.539" dur="5.041">the T and uh I just so happen to have</text><text start="500.759" dur="4.201">this nice scuzzy SD with a bracket</text><text start="503.58" dur="4.5">already printed up which I think will</text><text start="504.96" dur="6.12">fit quite nicely in here Reese kindly</text><text start="508.08" dur="4.759">made a downloadable XML file with the</text><text start="511.08" dur="7.04">settings that we can just import</text><text start="512.839" dur="5.281">directly into the scuzzy to SD</text><text start="518.159" dur="5.161">which will set up all of the goofy</text><text start="520.38" dur="7.38">settings that we need to work smoothly</text><text start="523.32" dur="9">and set up a two gigabyte partition</text><text start="527.76" dur="7.019">runs scuzzy to SD util</text><text start="532.32" dur="6.139">all right the scuzzy to SD is detected</text><text start="534.779" dur="3.68">and uh yeah we can</text><text start="538.8" dur="5.719">open the file</text><text start="541.08" dur="3.439">and save it to the device</text><text start="545.459" dur="5.461">all right that was successful</text><text start="548.519" dur="5.401">now we just need to get a disk image</text><text start="550.92" dur="6.859">onto the SD card so what Reese</text><text start="553.92" dur="7.38">recommends is a pre-configured Next Step</text><text start="557.779" dur="6.101">3.3 install image which you can download</text><text start="561.3" dur="5.34">from wind World here</text><text start="563.88" dur="6.06">and this will give you a two gigabyte</text><text start="566.64" dur="5.52">installation which is right after</text><text start="569.94" dur="5.459">install finished so we still get to go</text><text start="572.16" dur="5.82">through all the fun setup stuff as if we</text><text start="575.399" dur="6.781">installed from CD so I&amp;#39;ve downloaded the</text><text start="577.98" dur="7.919">image we&amp;#39;ll plug in our SD card</text><text start="582.18" dur="6.08">and using win32 disk Imager</text><text start="585.899" dur="5.221">we&amp;#39;ll install our two gigabyte partition</text><text start="588.26" dur="5.44">written directly to the card</text><text start="591.12" dur="4.8">all right so I have never taken one of</text><text start="593.7" dur="4.259">these apart before and uh like a true</text><text start="595.92" dur="3">professional I did not look it up ahead</text><text start="597.959" dur="5.161">of time</text><text start="598.92" dur="6.96">so we&amp;#39;re just gonna dig in and I&amp;#39;m fully</text><text start="603.12" dur="5.76">expecting this to be annoying to take</text><text start="605.88" dur="6">apart or complicated I mean it&amp;#39;s not</text><text start="608.88" dur="5.399">like it&amp;#39;s a super obscure 90s Unix</text><text start="611.88" dur="7.1">machine or anything</text><text start="614.279" dur="4.701">but I see one screw here on the back</text><text start="622.5" dur="3.92">and that&amp;#39;s the only screw I see</text><text start="627.18" plastic clips</text><text start="651" dur="5.04">I did read that next</text><text start="653.279" dur="6">move to these cheaper clips</text><text start="656.04" dur="6.239">for cost reduction and they are very</text><text start="659.279" dur="4.081">fragile these days and here is our hard</text><text start="662.279" dur="5.661">drive</text><text start="663.36" dur="4.58">which looks to be quite the chalkster</text><text start="668" dur="6.16">and the world&amp;#39;s shortest cables</text><text start="672.12" dur="4.1">is a Molex connector right on the</text><text start="674.16" dur="5.16">motherboard</text><text start="676.22" dur="6.82">and look at this teeny tiny scuzzy cable</text><text start="679.32" dur="5.639">it&amp;#39;s like two inches long</text><text start="683.04" dur="4.799">that&amp;#39;s amazing</text><text start="684.959" dur="5.281">oh there&amp;#39;s a battery in here</text><text start="687.839" dur="5.821">I probably should have looked for dur="6.24">have this kind of poorly printed</text><text start="760.32" dur="4.319">bracket which will suit our purposes</text><text start="763.019" dur="3.601">just fine because it&amp;#39;s not like you can</text><text start="764.639" dur="5.161">see it</text><text start="766.62" dur="8.3">there we go looks pretty good and will</text><text start="769.8" dur="5.12">our tiny cables fit let&amp;#39;s see</text><text start="775.32" dur="4.199">it&amp;#39;s a bit of a stretch</text><text start="777.42" dur="4.32">but it&amp;#39;ll do</text><text start="779.519" dur="5.701">and we don&amp;#39;t need this anymore because</text><text start="781.74" dur="5.58">the scuzzy to SD gets its power from</text><text start="785.22" dur="5.16">scuzzy termination</text><text start="787.32" dur="5.639">so this should be powered</text><text start="790.38" dur="3.84">from the single cable</text><text start="792.959" dur="2.82">alone</text><text start="794.22" dur="5.22">all right I would like to do something</text><text start="795.779" dur="6.781">about this kind of noisy fan even though</text><text start="799.44" dur="4.68">it&amp;#39;s not really that Dusty</text><text RGB but this should</text><text start="812.639" dur="7.32">be very quiet hence the name be quiet</text><text start="816.26" dur="5.44">and yeah this is a 12 volt fan I&amp;#39;m</text><text
