weird issues andthen play around with it and see what itwas like to use the finest Unix machinethat 1990 had to offer let's start withan abbreviated history this thing is anobscure unixie workstation from 1990 butit had a surprisingly outsized impact onthe overall history of computing theshort version is that in 1985 Steve Jobswas forced out of the company heco-founded Apple computerand instead of slinking off into thesunset with millions of dollars in Appleshares he founded a new computer companyNeXT in 1998 they released their firstcomputer the iconic Cubethese things are stupida super powerful spare no expenseworkstation with a brand new Unix basedoperating system called Next Step Itretailed for the equivalent of 15000 in today's money and use the sameprocessor as a lot of Macs at the timethe 68030 it targeted big business anduniversities doing big sciency stuff andit didn't sell very well but it left anincredible mark on Computing in the veryshort time it was actually on the marketTim berners-lee used a next machine asthe first server on what would becomethe web in software developed doom on anext computer and even the modern Mac OShas quite a bit of next DNA in it whichactually did a video on way back whenI'll link that right here this newcompany though eventually felt the stingof trying to push fifteen thousanddollar computers on universities andtrying to make a profit with thatsomehowso they released less expensive machineslike this color next station I have herealthough even this didn't last very longthey eventually gave up on Hardwarealtogether and just focused on sellingthe next step operating system which wasquite Innovative actually and then theyfamously sold the company back to Applesetting the stage for Steve Jobs toretake the CEO Reigns and start chuckingiPods at usherewell today we're gonna pause in thatbrief moment of time when next was stilla computer company and we're going toshow some love to thispretty interesting machine right herebecause it does have a few issues likean aging spinning hard drive that soundslike it's about to give up the ghost atany momentand this monitor only actually workswhen you hold the power button cleverlittle device that we've used quite abit on this channel which lets a scuzzymachine see an SD card as if it were ahard drive and there are a lot ofcomplicated configurable parameters thatyou can switch about on these thingsfortunately one of my all-time favoriteYouTubers control out Rhys has created aguide specifically on what fiddlysettings you need to set on this thingand I think I want to swap out thisBehemoth of a CRT for a nice LCD I'dlove to fix this thing but honestly thisthing weighs a ton and it's made ofextremely fragile plastic that's alreadycracking so I'm terrified to take itapart that's an Endeavor for future Seanbut swapping in an LCD isn't as simpleas you might thinkfirst it has to support synchron greenwhich is kind of uncommon even moreUncommon is the fixed resolution thatthe next station runs at it's 11 20 by832 and that's all you get good luckfinding a monitor that has any idea whatto do with that I thought I found theperfect oneoh God it's so heavyah so closeyet so farit sinks on green but it can't make thisgoofball resolution workfortunately after a ton of veryimpressive trial and erroroh yeah now that's nicethis is the only LCD that I've foundthat doesn't skew the picture too thinor cut off the top and the bottom I meanit's not absolutely perfect becausethere still is a bit of a border aroundthe edges but a CRT has a border likethis as well so it kind of looks finethe only imperfection here there's a bitof a scratch on the screen but it's nottoo distracting it's also very brightand crisp although not perfectly crispbut much sharper than that old tired CRTall right so we are going to be swappingout that noisy hard drive for a scuzzyto SD but scuzzy to SD isn't the onlyoption here in fact you could usesomething like a blue scuzzy just aswell or an Azul scuzzy and in fact byhappy coincidence Macintosh librarian isdoing this exact same thing right nowwith an internal and external bluescuzzy on next machine so uh yeah I'lldefinitely link her videos down belowonce they're postedbut I want to follow Reese's Guide tothe T and uh I just so happen to havethis nice scuzzy SD with a bracketalready printed up which I think willfit quite nicely in here Reese kindlymade a downloadable XML file with thesettings that we can just importdirectly into the scuzzy to SDwhich will set up all of the goofysettings that we need to work smoothlyand set up a two gigabyte partitionruns scuzzy to SD utilall right the scuzzy to SD is detectedand uh yeah we canopen the fileand save it to the deviceall right that was successfulnow we just need to get a disk imageonto the SD card so what Reeserecommends is a pre-configured Next Step3.3 install image which you can downloadfrom wind World hereand this will give you a two gigabyteinstallation which is right afterinstall finished so we still get to gothrough all the fun setup stuff as if weinstalled from CD so I've downloaded theimage we'll plug in our SD cardand using win32 disk Imagerwe'll install our two gigabyte partitionwritten directly to the cardall right so I have never taken one ofthese apart before and uh like a trueprofessional I did not look it up aheadof timeso we're just gonna dig in and I'm fullyexpecting this to be annoying to takeapart or complicated I mean it's notlike it's a super obscure 90s Unixmachine or anythingbut I see one screw here on the backand that's the only screw I seeohall right it's only one screwnot what I was expecting from a SteveJobs Enterpriseand look at thiswe have fully populated Ram although I'mnot sure exactly how much RAM this isand uh I don't want to take it outbecause it's on plastic clipsI did read that nextmove to these cheaper clipsfor cost reduction and they are veryfragile these days and here is our harddrivewhich looks to be quite the chalksterand the world's shortest cablesis a Molex connector right on themotherboardand look at this teeny tiny scuzzy cableit's like two inches longthat's amazingoh there's a battery in hereI probably should have looked for thissooner thankfully it's not leakingand I definitely don't have anytwo-thirds a batteries laying aroundoh look at thataccording to our good friend Mrmultimeter here this battery seems goodit's it's outputting three voltsall right well I guess we'll leave it inthere for now though I have no idea howold it isall rightto get this hard drive outI see one screw hereand that's the only screw I seeohit really is just one screw and itlevers on outamazing and wow just look at thischunktastic hard drive this thing isenormous so let's see justfour screws here I assumeand we have our scuzzy to SD which Ihave this kind of poorly printedbracket which will suit our purposesjust fine because it's not like you cansee itthere we go looks pretty good and willour tiny cables fit let's seeit's a bit of a stretchbut it'll doand we don't need this anymore becausethe scuzzy to SD gets its power fromscuzzy terminationso this should be poweredfrom the single cablealoneall right I would like to do somethingabout this kind of noisy fan even thoughit's not really that Dustybut I wonder if I can find somethinglike a noctua or better yet RGBokay well it's not RGB but this shouldbe very quiet hence the name be quietand yeah this is a 12 volt fan I'mpretty sure this is 12 volts it surelooks like itand our lovely be quiet fan in the sameorientation here which is actuallypushing air downand through these vents herenice okay let's do a dry run with thecover off and the SD card removedjust to make sure everything's gettingpower correctly the fan doesn't melt andthe lights blink on the scuzzy to SDand uh yeah here we gofan spinningnoise from the speakerall right testing system no lights onthe scuzzy to SD thoughhuhloading from diskah lights on the scuzzy to SD it isalivelet's put it back togetherand get the fullNext Step experienceoh yeah it's booting and I am reallyexcited for this because I have neverseen a fresh next up install and I haveno idea what the setup process is likeor how many screens there arewhat kinds of questions it's going toask so we have our welcome screen intons of different languages welcome BMVwill come in all right solanguage is English keyboard layout USAselected English yesokayoh all right we are directly into thedesktopthere was only one setup screenneatthis is like the opposite of a Macintosheasy to disassemble easy to set up theoperating systemcoolokay so NeXT computers were quite famousfor having RJ45 ethernet Jacks when nota lot of computers actually did in factthis might have been one of the firstwell the next Cube at least I think itmight be funto try to get the internet working onthis thing because this thing was builtfor networking and uh yeahlet's tryall right so I did actually look this upbeforehand so I knew how to do itbecause otherwise I'd be fumbling aroundforeveruhI think it's innext adminand then host managerthere we go yeah okayso I can configure stuff here inthe local taband setand after reboot go right aheadokay so after a little more reading Ithink I figured it out we have ourconfiguration here in localconfigurationset to use local domain only with myvery clever host name of next D fellowand uh yeahif we pop into a terminal hereI can pingthe router and I get a response and Ican ping The Wider internet so1.1.1.1 that is the cloudflare DNSserverand that pings just fine so this thingis on the internet now the other thingwe need to do is create a resolve.comfileso if IEtc resolve.confnope did that wrong VIEtcresolve with no e Dot conf and then Ijust need to doname server1.1.1.1right quitall right so we should have DNS after werestartso let's try1.1.1.1 a pingyep we are still connectedand nowping google.comheywe have domain namesall right sowhat I'd like to do now is get a webbrowser going on this thing and throughthe magic of FTP we have omniweb 2.7beta which I
