welcome to another episode of OSfirst-timer in this episode Diana willbe trying out OS to walk for released in1996 development of OS 2 for thepersonal system 2 line of computersbegan when IBM and Microsoft signed thejoint development agreement in August1985 os/2 1.0 was released in December1987 as a text-based operating systemhowever a user interface similar toWindows 2.1 was adding it october 1988when os/2 1.1 was released due to thesuccess of windows 3.0 in 1990 Microsoftfocused on their own Windows operatingsystem while IBM continued to developos/2 warp by themselves windows 3.0 hadthe advantage over os/2 because it waspre-installed on most computers and hadbetter drive compatibility unlike os/2which had to be bought for a high priceand installed separately you were goingto be trying out os/2 warp 4 released in1996 which has cross compatibility withwindows 3.11 as well as the ability touse speech recognition to control yourcomputer with your voice okay.what withthe system error huh what's with thesystem errorum just click OK is that a normal thingand the mouse hopefully not it's a blackmouse what does that mean there we goos/2 warp this does have speechrecognition but you can't use speechrecognition because there's no driverthey didn't write a driver back in 1996that would be compatible with this 2010microphone or my 2008 webcamok so you're ready your first task anymore weuse um NTFS yeah now I'm thinking floppydiskoh no stuff yeah it's actually referringto the actual disk of the computer thehard disk so they're the driversprinters volume a system start up youknow what I'm not sure where it is asystem center I need some assistance soI'll go there desktop icon for a coupledouble clicks yeah yes true uhm warptutorial I can might do thatI will try no no no no notry it see if it will actually tell youhow to do it you didn't know how to dosomething it's got to be fair with otheroperating systems for instance I didn'tlisten to the windows they are oil so in there becausethis is a Windows thing will rememberthis isn't windows this is os/2 warpthis is actually was slightly developedby Microsoft for a bit but now it's byBM that's developing it okay so itshouldn't really have Windows programswell it actually has Windows programsliterally it has Windows programs okay Ithink you can literally want run Windows3.1 from this okay I'm not going to findah keep maximizing it all the timenotice the maximize button is in theplace a close button usually is yeah andthat's why I kept using them well that'sthe web Explorer okay well I know I'mgonna find that laterum set new Netscape Navigatorwell I'm not going to be steering a shipso forget about that yes gate navigatoris actually a internet browserNetscape it was kind of but that looksto me as if it's an Internet but lookweb Explorer yeah do you think that's apretty good name for it yes it isbecause it says exactly what it is it sodo you think it's got a better name thanFirefox if it's a web browser just callit a Firefox then I know it's a FirefoxI mean just call it a web browser then Iknow it's a Firefox I would know exactlywhat that is okay so that's better thanFirefox anything was yeah I guess thatis well weren't you around back in 1996with an IBM dial-up yeah but I didn'thave this warp system thing I wasn'tactually even using a computer back thenI was using one at school and then foryears raising you I wasn't using acomputer I only went back to it in thelast we'll come on with some text whereare you gonna write your document Idon't know if this is religion if you'reat the office right it'sin their applications maybe it's anapplication no no objects in therelovely does Java by the way and it canactually run Firefox yep not the newestbut it can run a version of Firefoxwell Windows programs are programmanager I'm looking forward which is aWindows thing is no word but it's notthere now you're running Windows 3.1 oneinside of os/2 ball I want to writesomething so I'm assuming that willdouble me okayI'm what I want you to see somethingthough at the same time with this noticethe whole interface has changed look atthe close button now it's completelydifferent to earth to work because youare now pretty much running windows 3.11instead of ours to war okay for and it'slost its little X buttonoh it's lost its little line becausethis is the actual Windows 3.1 clientinterfaceso now you've just changed operatingsystems practically know how to closethat just get rid of itoh come on you've done it before and whyaren't you writing somebody sick I triedsomething what are you gonna save itthen okay I'm assuming that's to get outof it doesn't itfile save okay there we gojust doc more do where does it look likeit's saving where is it sayingin the C Drive C Drive os/2 M doswindows OS - so it's saving adding thiswill see if you can find that file nowokay okay now quit and see if you canfind thatdo you want to find it from withinwindows or do you want to find it withinOS book 4 no that's a new document okget rid of all of these file manager I'mwondering if it's in there to him is ithere doc right there it is yeahfound it congratulations you found itusing Windows 3.1 one but not OS walkedfour and we're supposed to be using warpif you've changed operating system Iwant to get out of this one up how areyou done windows 3.11and it was a nightmare I don't why I haven't even doneit properly in the os/2 warp how did youcreate a document in this instead ofWindows well I don't know forgive me thedocument writer so instead of makingtheir own I think they just use theWindows one they're like okay well thisoperating system doesn't have a documentright here's one um just borrowed forWindows me okay check this out beforeyou let me try it I did I searched for away to write document for a few hoursand I couldn't find one really yes youcan even run dust in this as wellyou can run dos windows 3.11 this isreally field pack with a bunch of stuffwhat do those look like to you I don'tknow it just Hardware type stuff howabout you now try to do what's twothousand eight hundred and fifty sixdivided by 68well calculatorwhere I just was let me get into thisprograms let me save thisstill no objects in there when I saw theobjects don't just appear you've got toput your objects into the applications asort of calculator and the other thingbut I think that was in the windows andI don't want to go in the windows againby the way let me show you somethinglook at thiswhat's that notepad Oh calculator thisthis is this isn't it click on it so nopower no no no no but notepad could beopening it up as you notice it's thisword when it's actually windows so it'saccessing the calculator and stuffsee that's windows see that Windows 3.1look all right so this is actual Windows3.1 sector later so the belief doesn'tcome with anything by itself you know itdoesn't come with the calculator so itborrows it from Windows okay it's areally good system isn't it they'vereally pre packed everything seeeverything they don't have they justtake from another system you like youknow what we don't have this but here gohave it from Windows 3.1 anyway so howcan watch two eight five six divided bysixty eight42 fantastic okay next is change I'llcustomize the look of the computer sowhat happens if I rightfully move itsproperties let me just see what theother things are well I found shut downso that's good properties desktop all Iwant to change them maybe no it doesn'tlook like iticon maybe if I change my corner notright-clicking it that's if you want tochange the icon not the background I'llgive you a question the back groundwould be no way to say what's his backbackground I found it yeah now whatbackground do you want what's thedifference between desktop andbackground desktop is stuff to do withthe desktop and background is stuff todo with the desktop background but is itthe background the desktop no thedesktop is stuff including your icons sothe stuff like that oh okay okay wellthat's the one that I've already gotdoesn't seem to come with any choices toclose that it's a little message minutespeering over the actual thing where youchange the background ah so what onewould you like another clue there's morethan two oh it's youbecause it was all the way at the endokay try not to do a logo or somethingtried opening there we go the lovely16-bit ocean oh boy this operatingsystem which looks like something yoursister would draw honestly well it's16-bit so they don't have the full rangeof colors anyway just get a photo I meanum yes that is a photo but the computercan't display properly because it's in16-bit okay it's terrible if it was in32-bit it would look a bit morelike a real photo with more colors butit's got a limited color palette socan't show everything actually thatreminds me of my first computer a trs-8016-bit I remember getting that as a kidokay but that was Dex based it was andhow did you manage ah I don't know Imanage much better buddy derided Worddocument how did he save file this isn'tright word documents as a kid I justplayed games on it okay and how did youplay games inserted a um wasn't a discit was a cartridge okay and what did youtype in didn't have to type in anythingas soon as you insert the cartridge itstarts okay fantasticwell that sounds intuitive but the lasttask is to if you're not alreadyabsolutely sick of this operating systemwould you like to explore it yourself ordo you just want to shut this thing downI think I pretty much already exploredit when I was looking through althoughthings its I'll show you something thatdoes just to show you that it does comewith applications over here there's atutorial it also has other stuff thathopefully isn't stolen from otheroperating systems utilities but thatlooks like aa picture viewer there yougo it's got something and it's even gotchess to games yesand here's chess there you go and lookat those fantastic graphics actuallythat's that's not bad that seems a bitbetter than the ocean background yeahwell there we go now turn off thecomputerand I'll give you a clue there's twoways you can right-click and do that waybut don't do that okay I was going totry their menu way there is a way toturn off the computer and you'veactually looked at it and said I won'tclick that that looks like you're notsupposed to click it yeah that's rightthere's that thing are you sure you wantto shut down the system yeah I do don'tlike a shutdown let's complete it's safeto turn off your computerokay lovely what do you think oh no Ireally don't like that one so if it was1996 right now would you be usingWindows 95 or would you be using os/2what for now I'd be using Windows 95definitely because I mean this one seemsto borrow a lot from Windows 3.1 which Ididn't like anyway and also it has a lotof symbols in it that it's not easy tounderstand what it is except for the webwhere bump Explorer I mean that'sextremely logical and also with thisthere seems like multiple ways to dothings like to turn it off that no oh Idon't like it didn't like it and as youknow this kind of failed and it died outin 2001 so it went all the way then andit was even running on ATMs like inAustralia literally ATMs would berunning OS support for but do you thinkit would have failed because remember itfailed because Microsoft's Windows wasmuch more successful and it kind of tookthe lead because it was pre-installedthis you had to buy separately andinstall it yourself do you think if thiswas pre-installed and Microsoft Windowswas something you had to actuallydownload and print like install yourselfdo you think it would have been moresuccessful still or do you think thiswould have been more successful but whatsomething is installed if you can't doit yourself get somebody else to helpyou but once it's installed up andrunning the real test is how younavigate through how easy is it to dothe tasks that you need to do you knowon a day-to-day basis so theinstallation part of it to me isirrelevant because you can pay somebodyto install it for you the real test ishow intuitive the system is innavigating your way through it and doingyour day-to-day tasks ok so if it was1996you'd be water 95 he'd bought thiscomputer and it came with this walk forsystole this walk for and installwindows 90 even if you'd never triedWindows 95 and you didn't know what itwas going to be like would you think orshould I try it out would you try it outor dowalk for is pretty good no I don't thinkI would think walk for because I foundit hard to photo way around and if Iwent to a friend's house install Windows95 you think wow that looks that looksgood yeah I think that so no I don'tlike this one we'll see you fine
