that it's actually a modern take on</text><text start="21.199" dur="3.601">the classic</text><text start="22.16" dur="3.199">bos there was a platform that if you ran</text><text start="24.8" virtual</text><text start="120.96" dur="4.88">machine and i've got this little mini</text><text start="123.119" dur="3.6">display note montage pc this is kind of</text><text start="125.84" dur="3.199">like an intel</text><text start="126.719" dur="3.841">nut clone really meant for office</text><text start="129.039" dur="3.041">meetings and that kind of thing</text><text start="130.56" dur="3.28">but the specs for it should be fine for</text><text start="132.08" dur="5.84">haiku as we've got an intel</text><text start="133.84" dur="6.479">i5 processor eight gigs of ram a an audio workstation</text><text start="144.4" dur="3.839">when i started doing my podcast from</text><text start="146.16" dur="4.4">home last year but in the meantime i've</text><text start="148.239" dur="4.961">actually got myself an m1 mac mini</text><text start="150.56" dur="3.36">so repurpose my intel mac as my podcast</text><text start="153.2" dur="3.52">setup</text><text start="153.92" dur="4.959">so this little pc is going spare and</text><text start="156.72" dur="4">looking for a job</text><text start="158.879" dur="3.681">so the first thing we need to do is to</text><text start="160.72" dur="3.2">download the image from the official</text><text start="162.56" dur="3.52">haiku website</text><text start="163.92" dur="3.679">and they actually offer a torrent to</text><text start="166.08" dur="3.92">ease the load on their servers</text><text start="167.599" dur="4">and the one gigabyte image downloaded</text><text start="170" dur="3.12">for me in about a minute or two</text><text start="171.599" dur="3.521">and of course you can install it from a</text><text start="173.12" dur="4.16">usb stick and they do offer instructions</text><text start="175.12" dur="4.56">on how to do that on their website but</text><text start="177.28" dur="3.679">as i've got a ton of blank dvds lying</text><text start="179.68" dur="3.44">around and</text><text start="180.959" dur="3.28">no spare usb sticks at the moment i</text><text start="183.12" dur="2.8">burnt it to a disc</text><text start="184.239" dur="3.041">and then i'm going to be installing it</text><text start="185.92" dur="4.399">using this little</text><text start="187.28" dur="4.4">usb dvd drive and after i figured out</text><text start="190.319" dur="3.92">how to get into the bios</text><text start="191.68" dur="4.479">on this little pc it's actually hit f10</text><text start="194.239" dur="4.401">a few times on boot if you've got one</text><text start="196.159" dur="3.44">we can then boot from the dvd and</text><text start="198.64" dur="5.12">hopefully</text><text start="199.599" dur="7.121">install haiku but unfortunately</text><text start="203.76" dur="4.32">it crashed before we got to that point</text><text start="206.72" dur="3.599">now i think i might have just got a bit</text><text start="208.08" dur="4.4">unlucky there so i did a hard reboot</text><text start="210.319" dur="3.2">and it turns out the installer loaded</text><text start="212.48" dur="3.039">fine this time</text><text start="213.519" dur="3.521">now it did take quite a while to load</text><text start="215.519" dur="4.08">from this dvd drive</text><text start="217.04" dur="3.839">around six minutes from power on to the</text><text start="219.599" dur="3.28">installer appearing</text><text start="220.879" dur="3.521">but when it did it was actually a really</text><text start="222.879" dur="3.601">straightforward process</text><text start="224.4" dur="3.68">and i wiped out the windows 10 install</text><text start="226.48" dur="4.319">that was already on the ssd</text><text start="228.08" dur="4.56">and installed haiku on a bos formatted</text><text start="230.799" dur="4.481">partition</text><text start="232.64" dur="4.879">and after a very short boot time we land</text><text start="235.28" dur="2.879">on the haiku desktop for the very first</text><text start="237.519" dur="3.121">time</text><text start="238.159" dur="3.041">now i have used haiku several times in</text><text start="240.64" dur="2.159">the past</text><text start="241.2" dur="3.36">kind of you know very minimally not very</text><text start="242.799" dur="3.041">much this is really the first time i've</text><text start="244.56" dur="3.28">properly sat down</text><text start="245.84" dur="4.08">and looked at it in depth and really</text><text start="247.84" dur="2.56">paid proper attention to what's going on</text><text start="249.92" dur="2.72">here</text><text start="250.4" dur="5.36">and i've got to say my first impressions</text><text start="252.64" dur="6.159">of the stock desktop that we've got here</text><text start="255.76" dur="5.36">is just how clean everything looks i</text><text start="258.799" dur="2.96">mean i use mac os mainly as my daily</text><text start="261.12" dur="2.72">driver</text><text start="261.759" dur="4.561">and windows as well quite a bit windows</text><text start="263.84" dur="4.32">10 and obviously on those systems</text><text start="266.32" dur="3.68">you've got you know notifications</text><text start="268.16" dur="3.759">popping up on the screen all the time</text><text start="270" dur="3.44">you've got taskbars you've got docs at</text><text start="271.919" dur="2.481">the bottom of the screen all of this</text><text start="273.44" dur="2.96">stuff going on</text><text start="274.4" dur="3.28">that really steals your attention from</text><text start="276.4" dur="3.76">what you're trying to get done</text><text start="277.68" dur="3.68">but looking here i mean 90 percent of</text><text start="280.16" dur="4.319">this desktop is</text><text start="281.36" dur="6">empty screen real estate so it really is</text><text start="284.479" dur="4.081">a distraction free environment um well</text><text start="287.36" dur="2.32">especially at this stage when you've</text><text start="288.56" dur="3.6">just booted it up</text><text start="289.68" dur="3.76">so we have a few um icons installed by</text><text start="292.16" dur="2.88">default up here in the top</text><text start="293.44" dur="3.12">left of the screen that we'll look at in</text><text start="295.04" dur="3.52">a bit more detail in a moment</text><text start="296.56" dur="3.199">and up here we have what's known as the</text><text start="298.56" dur="3.04">desk bar</text><text start="299.759" dur="3.761">and this is kind of like the windows</text><text start="301.6" dur="3.52">taskbar and start menu</text><text start="303.52" dur="3.84">very compact up in the corner of the</text><text start="305.12" dur="4.16">screen and i actually do prefer</text><text start="307.36" dur="3.6">this design to the way that windows 10</text><text start="309.28" dur="4.08">does it so if we click on the</text><text start="310.96" dur="3.519">feather here you can see this is kind of</text><text start="313.36" dur="2.48">the start menu</text><text start="314.479" dur="2.961">so you can access all of your</text><text start="315.84" dur="3.28">applications and preferences and</text><text start="317.44" dur="3.28">everything from in here</text><text start="319.12" dur="3.68">then we've got a section here with the</text><text start="320.72" dur="3.919">time and you can also access</text><text start="322.8" dur="3.28">running tasks and programs from in here</text><text start="324.639" dur="2.4">as well like the sound preferences that</text><text start="326.08" dur="3.679">kind of thing</text><text start="327.039" dur="3.521">um network which we'll try and get going</text><text start="329.759" dur="2.88">in a moment</text><text start="330.56" dur="4.16">and then this section here is where</text><text start="332.639" dur="3.521">running programs are minimized to</text><text start="334.72" dur="3.68">now before we get into kind of a bit</text><text start="336.16" dur="3.36">more on what's installed on a stock</text><text start="338.4" dur="2.96">haiku boot</text><text start="339.52" dur="4.239">and let's have a little look at some</text><text start="341.36" dur="3.2">unique window management features of</text><text start="343.759" dur="3.121">haiku</text><text start="344.56" dur="3.84">so if i open my ssd drive by double</text><text start="346.88" dur="3.2">clicking on the icon here</text><text start="348.4" dur="3.68">we can see we're in the root folder of</text><text start="350.08" dur="4.559">my ssd and</text><text start="352.08" dur="3.92">windows on haiku have their title bars</text><text start="354.639" dur="2.56">actually you know very small up in the</text><text start="356" dur="2.639">corner here we've got only only a</text><text start="357.199" dur="3.84">quarter of the window length</text><text start="358.639" dur="4">is taken up with the title bar and if i</text><text start="361.039" dur="4">open another one you can see</text><text start="362.639" dur="3.601">the highlighted window the title bar</text><text start="365.039" dur="2.561">appears yellow</text><text start="366.24" dur="3.04">and this is something that was carried</text><text start="367.6" dur="2.48">over from bos i remember seeing that</text><text start="369.28" dur="3.359">yellow</text><text start="370.08" dur="3.92">small window title bar in screenshots</text><text start="372.639" dur="2.881">and videos back in the day</text><text start="374" dur="3.36">but there is actually a lot more to it</text><text start="375.52" dur="3.679">than just aesthetics</text><text start="377.36" dur="4">because you can actually do some quite</text><text start="379.199" dur="2.881">unique and very useful window management</text><text start="381.36" dur="2.48">using them</text><text start="382.08" dur="3.36">so i've got these two windows side by</text><text start="383.84" dur="3.6">side if i hold down the</text><text start="385.44" dur="3.92">option key or the windows key on my</text><text start="387.44" dur="4.879">keyboard i can then</text><text start="389.36" dur="3.92">drag this window over the title bar of</text><text start="392.319" dur="2.801">the other window</text><text start="393.28" dur="4.32">and as you can see when they overlap</text><text start="395.12" dur="5.6">they turn this yellow color</text><text start="397.6" dur="4.96">then if i let go now both of these</text><text start="400.72" dur="3.759">windows are grouped together</text><text start="402.56" dur="3.04">and we can access them via these little</text><text start="404.479" dur="3.681">tabs at the top</text><text start="405.6" dur="3.2">and if i move either of the windows or</text><text start="408.16" dur="2.96">resize</text><text start="408.8" dur="3.36">them it will apply to both of them so</text><text start="411.12" dur="3.04">you've actually</text><text start="412.16" dur="3.36">grouped these two directories together</text><text start="414.16" dur="4.8">now as someone who</text><text start="415.52" dur="5.2">very often has multiple folders open on</text><text start="418.96" dur="3.12">windows maybe in my network drive and my</text><text start="420.72" dur="3.36">local machine and</text><text start="422.08" dur="3.519">trying to transfer files between them</text><text start="424.08" dur="3.04">all the time often it can be hard to</text><text start="425.599" dur="2">keep track of them on windows and i find</text><text start="427.12" dur="2.32">myself</text><text start="427.599" dur="3.04">like you know 20 different versions of</text><text start="429.44" dur="3.12">the same folder open</text><text start="430.639" dur="3.601">this is actually really handy if you</text><text start="432.56" dur="3.44">have a group of folders or</text><text start="434.24" dur="3.359">directories that you work between you</text><text start="436" dur="3.44">can then just group them together</text><text start="437.599" dur="4.081">and just have them together all the time</text><text start="439.44" dur="3.039">so i think that is a really handy</text><text start="441.68" dur="2.799">feature</text><text start="442.479" dur="4.321">and definitely something i would use on</text><text start="444.479" dur="3.44">windows so we can ungroup them again by</text><text start="446.8" dur="2.64">holding down option and then just</text><text start="447.919" dur="3.601">pulling them apart</text><text start="449.44" dur="3.599">but also what i think is uh quite cool</text><text start="451.52" dur="3.119">if we just uh actually close these down</text><text start="453.039" dur="4.961">again for some reason that's</text><text start="454.639" dur="4.96">stuck there uh now if i open that ssd</text><text start="458" dur="2.88">again there is another feature that you</text><text start="459.599" dur="3.681">can use</text><text start="460.88" dur="3.999">the um the option and drag for on the</text><text start="463.28" dur="2.479">desktop here so i can actually put these</text><text start="464.879" dur="3.44">windows</text><text start="465.759" dur="4.801">grouped side by side so hold down option</text><text start="468.319" dur="4.16">again and then i kind of hover</text><text start="470.56" dur="3.84">to the right of this window here you can</text><text start="472.479" dur="3.521">see there the side of them goes a dark</text><text start="474.4" dur="2.88">gray color when they get close</text><text start="476" dur="3.44">so then if i let go they kind of</text><text start="477.28" dur="4.72">magnetically stick together then</text><text start="479.44" dur="3.759">and again if i move one it will move</text><text start="482" dur="2.16">both of them around the screen so you've</text><text start="483.199" dur="3.12">actually grouped</text><text start="484.16" dur="3.439">two windows together again you could use</text><text start="486.319" dur="2.56">it for applications that you use</text><text start="487.599" dur="2.801">frequently so</text><text start="488.879" dur="4.481">i do like some of the window management</text><text start="490.4" dur="4.72">features in here so far very useful</text><text start="493.36" dur="3.36">now we also have what are known as</text><text start="495.12" dur="4.88">replicants on here as well</text><text start="496.72" dur="5.52">that are really um desktop widgets</text><text start="500" dur="4">and a lot of programs actually can run</text><text start="502.24" dur="4.16">in this mode so for example</text><text start="504" dur="3.199">if i open one that i know does have a</text><text start="506.4" dur="2.799">widget</text><text start="507.199" dur="3.44">and the the desktalk i know you can run</text><text start="509.199" dur="3.52">as a widget</text><text start="510.639" dur="3.84">and then you can see there and there is</text><text start="512.719" dur="3.44">a little dot in the corner of them</text><text start="514.479" dur="3.841">any application that you can run as a</text><text start="516.159" dur="3.921">replicant so what i do is i click on</text><text start="518.32" dur="3.36">that small dot there</text><text start="520.08" dur="2.72">and it will give me an outline and then</text><text start="521.68" dur="2.159">i can just drop it somewhere on the</text><text start="522.8" dur="3.76">desktop</text><text start="523.839" dur="4.801">and close that and now we have the</text><text think i've</text><text start="598.24" dur="3.44">already got that one running let's try</text><text start="599.279" dur="2.401">another one</text><text start="602" dur="3.76">disk just try the website for uh</text><text start="790.079" dur="4.641">my podcast there we go i was trying it</text><text start="793.6" dur="2.56">before with the uh</text><text start="794.72" dur="4.32">the wi-fi not working there we go it</text><text start="796.16" dur="4">works this time um a nice speedy page</text><text start="799.04" dur="2.4">load there as well</text><text start="800.16" dur="2.64">yeah quite impressed with that and you</text><text start="801.44" dur="2.72">can check out the the interviews that</text><text start="802.8" dur="3.279">we've boom which i think</text><text start="809.76" dur="7.36">gives you an html5 widget here so</text><text start="814" dur="4.72">i've clicked play an error code try</text><text start="817.12" dur="2.32">listening on audio boom okay we'll click</text><text start="818.72" dur="2.16">that</text><text start="819.44" dur="3.12">and this is often a problem that you'll</text><text again</text><text start="837.36" dur="5.12">no it's not working there um but i do</text><text start="839.6" dur="7.44">think on our website we do offer a</text><text start="842.48" dur="4.56">straight mp3 file if i click that</text><text start="847.92" dur="2.64">oh there we go it's downloading that now</text><text start="849.44" dur="3.12">i can obviously play that in the media</text><text start="850.56" dur="3.6">player on here i imagine um</text><text start="852.56" dur="3.76">so not the end of the world but it would</text><text start="854.16" dur="4.4">be nice to have streaming media working</text><text start="856.32" dur="4.56">in the web browser but what i want to</text><text start="858.56" dur="6.16">use haiku for in this video</text><text start="860.88" dur="4.8">is to attempt to do as much of my daily</text><text start="864.72" dur="3.119">work</text><text start="865.68" dur="3.519">with this operating system as i can for</text><text start="867.839" dur="3.12">now now a lot of the stuff i do is</text><text start="869.199" dur="2.401">web-based so i'm sure i can get that up</text><text start="870.959" dur="4.161">and running</text><text start="871.6" dur="4.479">but also we do have um a repository on</text><text start="875.12" dur="3.92">here as well</text><text start="876.079" dur="4.56">we can actually install third-party</text><text start="879.04" dur="4">applications from</text><text start="880.639" dur="3.921">now the reason i went for a 32-bit</text><text start="883.04" dur="3.68">install of haiku</text><text start="884.56" dur="3.92">instead of the 64-bit is that it</text><text start="886.72" dur="4.479">actually retains compatibility</text><text start="888.48" dur="3.599">with old bos i imagine some of those are</text><text start="895.04" dur="3.28">still going to be quite useful</text><text start="896.24" dur="3.44">and it's kind of cool to run original</text><text start="898.32" dur="3.84">legacy software</text><text start="899.68" dur="3.12">inside haiku so that's why i opted for</text><text start="902.16" dur="2.88">the uh</text><text start="902.8" dur="3.2">the 32-bit version to tell you what i'm</text><text start="905.04" dur="3.76">going to make a list</text><text start="906" dur="3.6">of the programs that i think i'm going</text><text start="908.8" dur="3.2">to need</text><text start="909.6" dur="4.88">to do my daily work and then we're going</text><text start="912" dur="4.8">to try and find equivalence in like the software is there</text><text start="1779.279" dur="4.161">to do it um but i mean i i can't say</text><text start="1781.6" dur="3.679">whether or not i can</text><text start="1783.44" we'll give that again and</text><text start="1788.08" dur="3.839">maybe for now</text><text start="1789.039" dur="3.841">there is a more fully featured um video</text><text start="1791.919" dur="4">their mac or windows</text><text start="1859.919" dur="4.24">on haiku but what about the fun stuff</text><text start="1862.159" dur="3.441">obviously downtime is important as well</text><text start="1864.159" dur="3.281">i listen to a lot of podcasts while i'm</text><text start="1865.6" dur="2.959">doing my work during the day so we have</text><text start="1867.44" dur="3.44">got something here called bee</text><text start="1868.559" dur="4.72">podder which is actually quite a fully</text><text start="1870.88" dur="5.039">featured and very simple to use</text><text start="1873.279" dur="3.841">podcasting client now i've done a reboot</text><text start="1875.919" dur="2.801">since earlier on this video</text><text start="1877.12" dur="4.48">i've actually got auto browser working</text><text start="1878.72" dur="4.959">so i can quickly show you this as well</text><text start="1881.6" dur="4.319">and if we go to uh we'll use my podcast</text><text start="1883.679" dur="4.24">as an example all you need is the rss</text><text start="1885.919" dur="4.161">feed so if i click that</text><text start="1887.919" dur="5.521">and then it should open the uh the rss</text><text start="1890.08" dur="5.599">there we go and i'm going to copy that</text><text start="1893.44" dur="3.68">and then we will add it into b podder as</text><text start="1895.679" dur="4.081">you can see it's automatically filled</text><text start="1897.12" dur="4.24">in we press add it will then download</text><text start="1899.76" dur="2.799">from the server there we go we've got 10</text><text start="1901.36" dur="2.72">new episodes</text><text start="1902.559" dur="3.921">and we seem to display the artwork there</text><text start="1904.08" dur="4.16">as well if we do um</text><text start="1906.48" dur="3.039">the latest one wonderful dizzy with the</text><text start="1908.24" dur="3.679">oliver twins</text><text start="1909.519" dur="4.4">if i press play on there as you can see</text><text start="1911.919" dur="5.201">it's open the media player</text><text start="1913.919" dur="6.24">i'm just gonna take a moment just to uh</text><text start="1917.12" dur="5.52">probably have to download that first</text><text start="1920.159" dur="3.681">and there we go the show opens in the</text><text start="1922.64" dur="3.36">built-in media player</text><text start="1923.84" dur="3.6">two copies of it there and actually we</text><text start="1926" dur="3.039">get the artwork it looks really nice in</text><text start="1927.44" dur="2.88">there so um i'll stop that so you're not</text><text start="1929.039" dur="3.921">hearing that over me</text><text start="1930.32" dur="4.479">um so yeah podcasting which you know is</text><text start="1932.96" dur="3.76">one of my main forms of media that i</text><text start="1934.799" dur="2.321">listen to when i'm working taken care of</text><text start="1936.72" dur="3.04">with b</text><text start="1937.12" dur="4.559">podder a very nice program and what</text><text start="1939.76" dur="3.2">about watching videos as well now uh</text><text start="1941.679" dur="4.561">there is actually a</text><text start="1942.96" dur="6">version of vlc available one of the</text><text start="1946.24" dur="4.4">most famous media applications on all</text><text start="1948.96" dur="4.559">platforms and play pretty much anything</text><text start="1950.64" dur="4">um we can actually play these in um</text><text start="1958.399" dur="4">haiku's built in</text><text start="1959.519" dur="4.241">now regular view a more g5 media players</text><text start="1962.399" dur="3.441">as you can see this is one of the uh</text><text start="1963.76" dur="4.56">videos off my youtube channel playing</text><text start="1965.84" dur="4.64">really nicely in here um this is a</text><text start="1968.32" dur="4.56">i believe a 720p download of it and you</text><text start="1970.48" dur="5.12">know we can do that full screen as well</text><text start="1972.88" dur="3.84">um man looks really sharp obviously</text><text start="1975.6" dur="3.439">they're screen captures</text><text start="1976.72" dur="4.4">um if i open let's try loading the</text><text start="1979.039" dur="4.48">computer chronicles into vlc</text><text start="1981.12" dur="3.52">there we go and again you can just put</text><text start="1983.519" dur="2.801">that in the corner while you're getting</text><text start="1984.64" dur="2.72">on with your work so when playing video</text><text start="1986.32" dur="2.719">is absolutely fine</text><text start="1987.36" dur="3.52">obviously the main place that people go</text><text start="1989.039" dur="3.36">for video is youtube of course but what</text><text start="1990.88" dur="3.2">about playing youtube in here</text><text start="1992.399" dur="4.16">now i know from using many alternative</text><text start="1994.08" dur="4.8">operating systems trying to play youtube</text><text start="1996.559" dur="4">in a web browser is actually quite a</text><text start="1998.88" dur="4.32">demanding thing</text><text start="2000.559" dur="3.84">for um many platforms you know if you</text><text start="2003.2" dur="2.719">haven't got like</text><text start="2004.399" dur="3.041">hardware acceleration and that kind of</text><text start="2005.919" dur="2.321">thing youtube is a pretty demanding</text><text start="2007.44" dur="3.599">website</text><text start="2008.24" dur="4.88">so if i show you here i actually tried</text><text start="2011.039" dur="3.921">to play youtube video using the</text><text start="2013.12" dur="3.12">default web positive browser and it</text><text start="2014.96" dur="2.48">brought down the entire i'm going to try playing</text><text start="2021.36" dur="6.319">my latest video</text><text start="2024.48" dur="4.48">see how we get on now when the ad that</text><text start="2027.679" dur="2.24">loaded last time it brought down the</text><text start="2028.96" dur="4.48">whole system</text><text start="2029.919" dur="4.88">uh so we skipped the ad there</text><text start="2033.44" dur="3.04">and an error occurred so we didn't get</text><text start="2034.799" dur="3.041">very far um but</text><text start="2036.48" dur="4.24">there is a way around this if you</text><text start="2037.84" dur="7.199">actually copy the url of the video</text><text start="2040.72" dur="6.559">and then there is a program called</text><text start="2045.039" dur="3.441">ubertuber and as you
