now i've been watching the haiku projectever since i first heard about it backin the early 2000sand if you're not familiar with it haikuis a free and open sourceoperating system that's designed to beextremely lightweight and veryresponsivebut one of the main reasons i've beeninterested in haikuis that it's actually a modern take onthe classicbos there was a platform that if you ranback thenyou'll know that it was extremely hypedback in the mid to late 90smade a lot of headlines back then and iused to read as much as i could aboutbos in magazines and on the early webbut never got to try it out at the timeand originally boswas designed to run on a custom powerpcbased platformcalled the be box and originally thesecostaround sixteen hundred dollars when theywere launched back in 1995 whichis equivalent to around twenty sevenhundred dollars in today's moneyway out of my price range back then andeven nowand i never even saw a bee box in personoutside the magazines and onlinebut i always thought they looked awesomeand in the context of the erabos did seem like the perfect answer tothe computing landscape of the mid 90sit was an operating system that wasbuilt from the ground up to handlemultimediaand to be really fast and actually atone stagebos was going to be the next operatingsystem for the macuntil apple decided to buy steve jobscompany nextand then develop his next step operatingsystem into os10 and the mac os that we know todayanyway history lesson aside haiku isaimed to be an open source continuationof where bos left off when developmentended back in 2001and actually haiku has just hit amilestone releaserecently with beta 2 so i thought itmight be a good time to give it a propertryand to see if it's actually usable formy everyday workin 2021 now i'm going to be installinghaikuon real hardware not in a virtualmachine and i've got this little minidisplay note montage pc this is kind oflike an intelnut clone really meant for officemeetings and that kind of thingbut the specs for it should be fine forhaiku as we've got an inteli5 processor eight gigs of ram a 256gigabyte ssd inside here as welland i actually got this last summer touse as an audio workstationwhen i started doing my podcast fromhome last year but in the meantime i'veactually got myself an m1 mac miniso repurpose my intel mac as my podcastsetupso this little pc is going spare andlooking for a jobso the first thing we need to do is todownload the image from the officialhaiku websiteand they actually offer a torrent toease the load on their serversand the one gigabyte image downloadedfor me in about a minute or twoand of course you can install it from ausb stick and they do offer instructionson how to do that on their website butas i've got a ton of blank dvds lyingaround andno spare usb sticks at the moment iburnt it to a discand then i'm going to be installing itusing this littleusb dvd drive and after i figured outhow to get into the bioson this little pc it's actually hit f10a few times on boot if you've got onewe can then boot from the dvd andhopefullyinstall haiku but unfortunatelyit crashed before we got to that pointnow i think i might have just got a bitunlucky there so i did a hard rebootand it turns out the installer loadedfine this timenow it did take quite a while to loadfrom this dvd drivearound six minutes from power on to theinstaller appearingbut when it did it was actually a reallystraightforward processand i wiped out the windows 10 installthat was already on the ssdand installed haiku on a bos formattedpartitionand after a very short boot time we landon the haiku desktop for the very firsttimenow i have used haiku several times inthe pastkind of you know very minimally not verymuch this is really the first time i'veproperly sat downand looked at it in depth and reallypaid proper attention to what's going onhereand i've got to say my first impressionsof the stock desktop that we've got hereis just how clean everything looks imean i use mac os mainly as my dailydriverand windows as well quite a bit windows10 and obviously on those systemsyou've got you know notificationspopping up on the screen all the timeyou've got taskbars you've got docs atthe bottom of the screen all of thisstuff going onthat really steals your attention fromwhat you're trying to get donebut looking here i mean 90 percent ofthis desktop isempty screen real estate so it really isa distraction free environment um wellespecially at this stage when you'vejust booted it upso we have a few um icons installed bydefault up here in the topleft of the screen that we'll look at ina bit more detail in a momentand up here we have what's known as thedesk barand this is kind of like the windowstaskbar and start menuvery compact up in the corner of thescreen and i actually do preferthis design to the way that windows 10does it so if we click on thefeather here you can see this is kind ofthe start menuso you can access all of yourapplications and preferences andeverything from in herethen we've got a section here with thetime and you can also accessrunning tasks and programs from in hereas well like the sound preferences thatkind of thingum network which we'll try and get goingin a momentand then this section here is whererunning programs are minimized tonow before we get into kind of a bitmore on what's installed on a stockhaiku bootand let's have a little look at someunique window management features ofhaikuso if i open my ssd drive by doubleclicking on the icon herewe can see we're in the root folder ofmy ssd andwindows on haiku have their title barsactually you know very small up in thecorner here we've got only only aquarter of the window lengthis taken up with the title bar and if iopen another one you can seethe highlighted window the title barappears yellowand this is something that was carriedover from bos i remember seeing thatyellowsmall window title bar in screenshotsand videos back in the daybut there is actually a lot more to itthan just aestheticsbecause you can actually do some quiteunique and very useful window managementusing themso i've got these two windows side byside if i hold down theoption key or the windows key on mykeyboard i can thendrag this window over the title bar ofthe other windowand as you can see when they overlapthey turn this yellow colorthen if i let go now both of thesewindows are grouped togetherand we can access them via these littletabs at the topand if i move either of the windows orresizethem it will apply to both of them soyou've actuallygrouped these two directories togethernow as someone whovery often has multiple folders open onwindows maybe in my network drive and mylocal machine andtrying to transfer files between themall the time often it can be hard tokeep track of them on windows and i findmyselflike you know 20 different versions ofthe same folder openthis is actually really handy if youhave a group of folders ordirectories that you work between youcan then just group them togetherand just have them together all the timeso i think that is a really handyfeatureand definitely something i would use onwindows so we can ungroup them again byholding down option and then justpulling them apartbut also what i think is uh quite coolif we just uh actually close these downagain for some reason that'sstuck there uh now if i open that ssdagain there is another feature that youcan usethe um the option and drag for on thedesktop here so i can actually put thesewindowsgrouped side by side so hold down optionagain and then i kind of hoverto the right of this window here you cansee there the side of them goes a darkgray color when they get closeso then if i let go they kind ofmagnetically stick together thenand again if i move one it will moveboth of them around the screen so you'veactually groupedtwo windows together again you could useit for applications that you usefrequently soi do like some of the window managementfeatures in here so far very usefulnow we also have what are known asreplicants on here as wellthat are really um desktop widgetsand a lot of programs actually can runin this mode so for exampleif i open one that i know does have awidgetand the the desktalk i know you can runas a widgetand then you can see there and there isa little dot in the corner of themany application that you can run as areplicant so what i do is i click onthat small dot thereand it will give me an outline and theni can just drop it somewhere on thedesktopand close that and now we have thecalculatorthat we can just run as a widget on thedesktopvery cool and actually several otherprograms can do this activity mantra nocan as wellso we could drag that off and have it asa widgetdown here and close that and then you'vegot these running all the timeand you can just use them you know at aglance without having to find them andopen them up soi think that's a really really coolfeature and we also have virtualworkspaces as well so i think that isanotherapplet that we can run there we goworkspacesif i actually click it properlyand as you can see we have four virtualworkspacesinstalled by default on haiku now what ican do is i can opena couple of windows again on here andyou see the outline of themin the workspaces widget down here inthe corner but i can actually move themaroundby just clicking on the outlines andthenif i wanted to move the home directoryonto the secondvirtual workspace i just drag and dropit there then i can click between themas you can see it's running there on itsown completely on workspacei can then launch um another applicationlet's try the uhmedia player again which i think i'vealready got that one running let's tryanother onedisk usage there we go um again you cansee it therei can just drag it i can put it in therethen we click between themyou can also do it from the keyboardmoving between them but it is nice tohave a really simple wayto access and manipulate virtualworkspaces out of the box so yeah it'svery very usefulnow let's have a look at what else we'vegot in haiku as there are a few demosincluded for example the glt port nowthis is one that i remember seeing onbosdemonstrations back in the day and uhthis was a very common demoto show 3d back in the old days um and ithink i rememberbeing impressed that a bos b box coulddo this at around 30 fps and thereeven on this little intel nook thinghere we've got you know running itaround160 fps when it's uh larger obviouslythe smaller i make this windowit can do it a lot quicker and you canmanipulate that and move it around soit's nice that they included that oldbos demo in here as wellum what else have we got in here we havethe sound recorder that i showedthere is a web browser called webpositive umand i don't think we're going to beconnected to the internet just yet soi imagine it won't have set up my um whyi haven't inputted my wi-fi password yetso that's not gonna workso then why don't we try and get thisonline we'll go into the preferenceshereum into networknow i'm not sure this is gonna work withwi-fi because you know i'm used to usingalternative operating systems like morphos and amiga os4 i've used in the pastand actually took quite a while untilwi-fi was implemented on those machineson those platforms as you knowsupporting several wi-fi chips for asmall team of developersis often not something that's feasiblebut it does look like hereit has actually found my wireless deviceumactually yeah we can see my wi-finetwork in herealthough there are actually fourdifferent versions of my network whichis called parisas i've got a mesh network so um it'snot actually grouping them togetherum it actually looks like we've gone andcrashed the uhthe network preference so tell you whatlet's try maybe because i've got thatopenlet's try launching that again um itwould be quite cool if i can hook it upto wi-fi thoughsave me finding an ethernet cableum okay so we'll pick the one with thestrongest signalwhich um looks like it's going to bethat one which might bethe uh the mesh point i've got here inmy roombecause i've got them all over the houseso we'll uh we'll try that thereokay and will it connect to my wi-fiwe're given a moment so i've tried for afew minutes to get it to recognize mywi-fi network and uhas you can see now it can't actually seeany wireless network soi've actually just got an ethernet cablewe're gonna uh put that into the back ofthe machineum a bit of a shame that it couldn'tjoin the wi-fi but you know it's no bigdealthere you go i've plugged an ethernetcable in and we are connected to thenetworkand we get a little notification up herein the corner as well so now if i openthe uh the web browser again we shouldbe able to get onlineso let's just try the website for uhmy podcast there we go i was trying itbefore with the uhthe wi-fi not working there we go itworks this time um a nice speedy pageload there as wellyeah quite impressed with that and youcan check out the the interviews thatwe've doneuh if i click in there can we actuallyplay the media thoughnow we use um audio boom which i thinkgives you an html5 widget here soi've clicked play an error code trylistening on audio boom okay we'll clickthatand this is often a problem that you'llfind with alternative operating systemsthat you know playing mediayoutube for example could be an issue onmorpho s generally you've got to getum kind of third-party programs to kindof make them workthey often don't just work out the boxand browsers but we can try here againno it's not working there um but i dothink on our website we do offer astraight mp3 file if i click thatoh there we go it's downloading that nowi can obviously play that in the mediaplayer on here i imagine umso not the end of the world but it wouldbe nice to have streaming media workingin the web browser but what i want touse haiku for in this videois to attempt to do as much of my dailyworkwith this operating system as i can fornow now a lot of the stuff i do isweb-based so i'm sure i can get that upand runningbut also we do have um a repository onhere as wellwe can actually install third-partyapplications fromnow the reason i went for a 32-bitinstall of haikuinstead of the 64-bit is that itactually retains compatibilitywith old bos programs which you knowopens upeven though they are a couple of decadesold now i imagine some of those arestill going to be quite usefuland it's kind of cool to run originallegacy softwareinside haiku so that's why i opted forthe uhthe 32-bit version to tell you what i'mgoing to make a listof the programs that i think i'm goingto needto do my daily work and then we're goingto try and find equivalence in haikuand see if i can actually use haiku todo some of my tasks and get my jobs donethis afternoon we'll have a look at allthatnext and just before we do that iquickly wanted to take a moment to thinking of jobs that ido each day i thought it might be a goodtimeto mention the only commercial use ofhaikuthe only commercial product currentlyavailable for it that i'm aware ofas some of you might know that iactually am a radio host here in the uki've done a daily music show now for umalmost 20 yearsand there is actually a radio musicplayer suite made for haikucalled command center now this began asa bos product back in the late 90sand when bos started to fade away ratherthan change over to linux or windows forexampleit was obviously a lot easier for themto make the transition to haikuand it's still based on haiku today nowunfortunatelythere isn't a demo version that i canshow you on here andthe retail version of it costs around athousand dollarsso uh yeah probably not justifiable tobuy that to show you for a quick minutein this videobut what i do like is they show you alot of screenshots here as well but alsothey sing the prizes of haiku right onthe front page of their websiteso um it is really cool that you know ifi did have to do my radio show from homeand i needed my own software i couldprobably justify buying this and youknowthat seems like it would be checked offinstantly so a really coolcommercial use of haiku and if anyone isusing command centerum leave a comment and let me know i'vealways found it really interesting i'dlove to get like a demo of thatanyway on to other things that i do nowanother one of my jobs is i dolots of social media management and thatdigital content editing for manydifferent brands and the tools i use areall quite basicand i can access all of my socialnetworks via web positivenow i've got to say the desktop versionof facebookbrought web positive to its knees but ifwe go tom.facebook.com we can then accessthe mobile optimized version of facebookand actuallyit runs just fine in here um if not youknow the prettiestbut it is functional and as you can seehere i did actually make a quick postfrom haikuusing facebook on web positive a bitearlier on todayand if we click it it will show me thefull size of that screenshotum i hope yeah apparently notbut yeah it did work fine so i meantechnically i could do it it's not themost pleasant wayto use facebook admittedly quitefrustratingly thoughthere is another web browser availablefor haiku called otter browserthe facebook loaded really quickly inbut since i've done a few updates tohaiku it doesn't appear to launchanymore when i double click itnothing happens so yeah that is a bitfrustrating that i can't show youthat but um we can use a mobile versionin here um the other thing i dois you know website cms tools i usewordpress all the time and uhas you can see you know that'sfunctioning completely fine and i'vetried out a few things in hereno problem at all using wordpress so ithink we can check offa couple of those things instantly inhere i'll close these tabs to give us alittle bit more ramnow obviously email is essential topretty much everyone in 2021 you know iget hundreds of emails a day throughwork soit is going to be important that i'vegot access to my email using haikuand actually haiku is that quite blessedin terms of the variety of email clientsavailable for itthere is one included out of the boxwhich we can access by clickingon the little mail icon here and thatwill bring up the new email windowunfortunately gmail wouldn't let me useit as it said the security was too weakand it blocked it and my website emaildespite copying the settings from myoutlook client on my pcalso wouldn't connect luckily there areactually a few otherthird-party email clients available forhaiku including one here called themquite memorably mail news which isactually afork of thunderbird so i've got thatopen here actually if i just clickthat i managed to get it working with mywebsite emailno problem at all obviously there islots of personal stuff in there that idon't want to show on videobut i've i've trashed a couple of spammessages here so i can show you itworking you know we've got a messagefrom instagram thereand a outlook test message and i'vetried sending that works absolutely fineand also we can access usenet using thisas wellnow in this day and age using that isreally just useful for binaries and youknow everything else on this kind ofspambut using olduse.net we can browseuse groups as they were this day in 1991so actually i've had a load of fun doingthis uh we can read you knowfebruary 1st 1991 we can go through andsee what was uh happening in the worldof itand the uh in the next computer grouphere we've got the uhamiga group here um you just downloadthem by clicking that and thenyeah we can go back in time and uh checkout usenet as it was back in its heydaysouh email and news i think we can takeoff they're both working finein haiku now day to day i do rely quiteheavily on the adobe suiteincluding photoshop now i'm not anadvanced photoshop userby any stretch of the imagination i getit through work andi really use it for social mediagraphics and article headersmostly so that shouldn't be too hard toreplicate with third-party applicationsand something like photopia which is anonlinephotoshop clone would actually beperfect for it but unfortunately when itry and uhrun it using um the inbuilt browser webpositive it tells me that the browser istoo oldand to please update it despite the factthat this browser i thinkjust got updated last year umthis year actually so unfortunately wecan't get beyond thatso we're gonna have to stick with nativetools and besidesusing web tools is kind of cheatingreally isn't it now there are quite afew um art packages availableon the haiku depot including art paintum which if i bring up all the variousmenus and windows here um looks prettypowerful and it's got stuff like layersin here as wellthis one does seem to be a bit moregeared towards people are actually doingartas opposed to kind of photo manipulationbut i found something here called wonderbrushthat actually has got most of thefeaturesthat i use day to day in photoshop soyou know i could actually do stuff likemy thumbnails and everything in herejust finewe have uh photoshop style layers inhere that we can turn off and onum all the text and shadow tools andeverything soi think i could probably do everythingthat i use photoshop forusing wonder brush by the looks of it soum i think we can take that off the listas wellnow something else that's reallyimportant to me is having access to mynetwork attachedstorage as i've got a couple of nasdrives on my home network that i umuse for storing my documents my imagesand my movies and tv showsand it's nice to access them across mynetwork on any deviceand using the plug-in smb network fromthe haiku depotand then all you do is go into networkand then enable it in herethat then means i can access my networkdrives on haiku so if i double click onmymedia nas drive here and you can see myprivate and my public folderif i go into there we've got all mymedia files my movies that we can streamover the network so you know that'sreally usefuland very important to me that i canaccess all of my network attachedstorageon any device so that's really cool nowanother thing that obviously most peopleneedday to day if you're working is anoffice suite now i will admit i usuallylive a bit more insidefriend os office or google docs day today and you know more into the the cloudoffice suites where you can access filesfrom anywherebut it is still quite handy to have alocal fully featured office suite onyour machinenow i did read that libreoffice wasported to haiku although i couldn't findit on the depotmaybe because it's been superseded by acalligra office suite now we've gota couple of different programs in thisbundle including awords with an s on the end which asyou'd imagineis a word processor and actually apretty decent one as well i mean it'scompatible with microsoft officeand i do like the user interface here aswell i mean you've only really got thethings that you generally use when doingstandard documents on display it's veryclean and very easy to useand actually i think microsoft couldprobably learn a thing or two about umsimplistic user interfaces from here umwill come out of that not toointeresting i knowand we also have a spreadsheet calledsheets as well whichas you'd imagine you know compatiblewith excel not the kind of thing i useevery dayonly really at the end of the month wheni'm doing my invoices you knownice to get paid sometimes um justquickly in here as well we have umstage as well which is a presentationsuitetheir equivalent of powerpoint andthey're just finallyin the calligraph we also have carbon aswell whichnot the kind of thing i really use it'sa vector graphics package but you knowit is there if you want it soit is quite a fully featured officesuite so i think we cansafely tick that off my requirementslistbut what about the more heavy duty stuffnow of course i do host and edit aweekly retro gaming podcastis it possible for me to edit my podcastin haikuwell i did find an audio editor called ba e presumably standing for b audioeditor as it runs in bosand on haiku as well and i record all ofmy audioin um pre-production in wave formatso we've got a couple of wave files herei'm going to try a short onewhich um i can should be able to justplay in herethere you go so i can zoom in and youknow you can access your waveform inthere i can maybe take that bit of audiooutso there we go can we play that now youknow the dev kicks were likemove the play head back a bitthere we go so it's a little bit laggyumbut you know it is quite usable andwe've got a few other features in hereas well we have a a compressorwhich is quite nice there are a fewthings like um delayreverb room some bass boost simple kindof effects that are in here as well soyou know for basicaudio editing this should do the job idid find though that it struggled onlonger files like i've got the firstpart of this video here which is umabout 311 megabytes if i clickthat um last time i tried this it gotstuck just unloading file there forabouthalf an hour um and nothing happened souhyeah i think we'll just come out withthat and uh move that out of the way fornow hopefully it hasn't crashed thesystemso audio editing i guess we can do youknow if it's kind of minimalisticum i mean when i use it on my pc i'vegot all myvst plugins you know ozone and stufflike that that i really couldn't dowithout so it's not a major lossmaybe your mileage is going to vary sowe'll put that down as a you knowmaybe what about the really heavy dutystuff though what aboutvideo editing well there is actually acouple of video editingsuites available for haiku now the onei've got installed hereis um ultra dv althoughi've got a couple of uh video fileswhich um let'stry and open them in here um i've gotthem inin my home directory which actually it'sa bit fiddly this umdialog box here it won't let me come outof here andaccess the files that i want to go tocan we maybe add a current foldernow that is not working for me so whati'm going to do is i'm just going tomove that downand we'll find the file manuallyso i've got a couple of my youtubevideos and an episode of the computerchronicles one of myall-time favorite shows now this isstandard definition only 91 megabytesshouldn't be too taxing as you can seei've loaded that into thereso can we nowplay that so it needs to be in thetimeline by the looks of itokay so not the most logical userinterface i mean it might just be a bitdifferent you know i'm used to usingfinal cut there we go we'll actually seestewart's referee therethere we go we're playing now so couldwesplit this i must admit this userinterface is very alien to me but itlooks like video editing should bepossible in hereum you know with video editing softwarewhen you know your way around one ofthemyour brain kind of works in that mode umbut i mean yeahwe've got that in the timeline there iimagine that we could manipulate thatum really this is down to uh user errorand it looks like the software is thereto do it um but i mean i i can't saywhether or not i cani can actually do my video editing inhere there's a possibility i can thoughso i think we'll give that again andmaybe for nowthere is a more fully featured um videoediting suitein here which if i go into um thedepot again i can quickly show you thisso i've seen it demoed inother places drugger one actually did asimilar video to this a couple of monthsagoand i've been planning to do this forabout a year and he beat me to it i dolove his channelbut he actually did a um a demousing let's see if we can find it inhereopen shot that was it unfortunately tryas i might if i click on installbecause this one looked really good ittells me that i need a few dependenciesthat i haven't got and i can't ignorethemif i do that either solution is do notinstall it or ignore itit doesn't seem to work and i've triedupdating i've tried running this on thenightlyswhatever i do i just can't get open shotto open sovideo editing for now i'm going to putthat down again as a maybeum i imagine i probably could if ifigured that ultra dv a little bit moreso um that's most of the work ticked offi think you knowmost of my jobs i could probably getdone um admittedlywith a bit more work than using it ontheir mac or windowson haiku but what about the fun stuffobviously downtime is important as welli listen to a lot of podcasts while i'mdoing my work during the day so we havegot something here called beepodder which is actually quite a fullyfeatured and very simple to usepodcasting client now i've done a rebootsince earlier on this videoi've actually got auto browser workingso i can quickly show you this as welland if we go to uh we'll use my podcastas an example all you need is the rssfeed so if i click thatand then it should open the uh the rssthere we go and i'm going to copy thatand then we will add it into b podder asyou can see it's automatically filledin we press add it will then downloadfrom the server there we go we've got 10new episodesand we seem to display the artwork thereas well if we do umthe latest one wonderful dizzy with theoliver twinsif i press play on there as you can seeit's open the media playeri'm just gonna take a moment just to uhprobably have to download that firstand there we go the show opens in thebuilt-in media playertwo copies of it there and actually weget the artwork it looks really nice inthere so um i'll stop that so you're nothearing that over meum so yeah podcasting which you know isone of my main forms of media that ilisten to when i'm working taken care ofwith bpodder a very nice program and whatabout watching videos as well now uhthere is actually aversion of vlc available one of themost famous media applications on allplatforms and play pretty much anythingand in my home folder there i have got acouple of videos that i downloadedalreadyum we can actually play these in umhaiku's built innow regular view a more g5 media playersas you can see this is one of the uhvideos off my youtube channel playingreally nicely in here um this is ai believe a 720p download of it and youknow we can do that full screen as wellum man looks really sharp obviouslythey're screen capturesum if i open let's try loading thecomputer chronicles into vlcthere we go and again you can just putthat in the corner while you're gettingon with your work so when playing videois absolutely fineobviously the main place that people gofor video is youtube of course but whatabout playing youtube in herenow i know from using many alternativeoperating systems trying to play youtubein a web browser is actually quite ademanding thingfor um many platforms you know if youhaven't got likehardware acceleration and that kind ofthing youtube is a pretty demandingwebsiteso if i show you here i actually triedto play youtube video using thedefault web positive browser and itbrought down the entire system itcompletely locked upso hopefully it's not going to do ithere i'm going to try playingmy latest videosee how we get on now when the ad thatloaded last time it brought down thewhole systemuh so we skipped the ad thereand an error occurred so we didn't getvery far um butthere is a way around this if youactually copy the url of the videoand then there is a program calledubertuber and as you can see again it'sautomaticallycompleted the video url you click onplay and you need to do a bit ofbuffering you can also save the video toyourlocal disk as welland as you can see it opens up in umhaiku's default media playerum and again i mean this actually playsit without all theextra stuff that youtube is doing on itswebsite so it meansthe system could just focus on playingthe video and as you can see it'splaying absolutely flawlessly in here aswell it's a little bit of a workaroundthat you got to doto watch youtube videos but you knowreally not that much of a hassle at allsoi think we can check off uh watchingvideo no problem at alland there are also a bunch of games onthe haiku depot as well you know allkinds of different things you've gotports of uh freeware games classicarcade gamesand there's even a version of dosbox onhere as well several emulatorsum there's even a version on here i sawbefore of retro arch as wellso um you know if you want all youremulators to be accessible on herethere's quite a lot of games that youcan play i mean one of my favorite gameenginesis the brilliant scum vm to play allthose classic adventure games i've gotbeneatha steel sky installed on here umand i did a little test before playsabsolutely flawlessly as you'd expectnot too demanding for it to run you know30 year old games in herebut game software there is quite a bitgoing on on haiku you're not going to bei'm sure particularly if you're into uhclassic games um plenty of themrun absolutely fine on high keys justtrying to tell the futureand i do like the talky version ofbeneficial sky we'll come out of thatthough otherwise i'll sit here and playall afternoonand we've also got uh something reallycool that i enjoyplaying around with we have milkytracker if you're into yourclassic mods and um kind of the demosceneum this is on many systems i actuallyused it on morph osa couple of years ago in a video and asyou can see we've got uman xm mod file there we can play that[Music]so listen to all your uh your bangingdemo scene mods while you're getting onwith your workand usually i'll stop that so you canhear meum i like to chat to people as well imean i use discord on my pc but alsoi enjoy using irc as wellso go to free node and then it will takeme straight into the uhthe haiku irc umclient i believe when this loads herewe'll be able to get to thethe haiku channelthere we go so again you know chattingwith friendsif you're into irc you know the oldschool kind of stuff as i am obviouslydoing this channelthat's taken care of we can take thatoff as well so i think i'm going toleave it there asthis video is already getting way toolong but in conclusioni'm extremely impressed with haiku now ididn't expect to seriouslybe able to get all of my daddy tasksdone using this beta version of haikuand you know i'm very familiar with theway that alternative operating systemsrun by small groups of people work and iknow how difficult some of this stuffcan be to implement and alsoto get the ports of software to it aswell but actually at this stageit is a lot more capable than i expectedand ican actually get quite a lot of workdone in here and i've always beenfascinated with bosand being able to use an operatingsystem that's an open sourcecontinuationof bos i found it really enjoyable soi'm actually going to leave haikuinstalled on this machine
