developmentyoung professional program committee myname is patrick hamlock i'm the chair ofthe aforementioned iaf workforcedevelopment and young professionalscommittee also known as wdyppuh i'm joined today by uh two of mycolleagues scott madre and carol carnetscott is the professor emirates at theisu a research associate professor atunc chapel hill and i'm a correspondingmember of the ia and carol is a globalfaculty member and english programs leadof the international space universityso uh just give you a bit of backgroundfirst of who is presenting this to youtoday and then we're going into itso um first the iafps lab so the public speaking lab wascreated a couple years agoto provide assistance to you out therein public speaking and presentationskills for the internationalastronomical congressand all other iaf programs so we'reproviding this this service uh throughthe ps lab now for for a couple timesfor a couple webinarsuh beforehand uh our committee hasalready done a couple of these webinarsumso thewd ypp committeeuh is generally the focal point for foryoung professionals within the iafuh we're an administrative committee andand um we enhance as it says here theexperienceum for young professionals at the iacmainly but also at other events uhthroughout the yearso umthat just as a background of who we areuh and a little bit of um yeah what wedo umtoday in this in this on good writing andoverallbasically providing thebit of background information on how towrite a great ise paperso um yeah so you go forth and do agreat job writing your paper that'sthat's what we're here forsoto uh to start us off i'llhand over to scottgreat thank you very much patrick andhello everybody and thank you so muchfor joining us we enjoy doing thesewebinars and we hope they're helpful wehope they help peopleso uh please do umgo on to slido and give us a little bitof information about who you are so thatthat helps us do a better job and uh ofcourse we'll look forward to answeringyour questions as we go along so uhcongratulationsto all of you because for this iec 2022over 4800 abstracts were submitted i meanthat's an amazing number of abstractsby people from 97 countries around theworld and your paper was accepted andthat's that's a great thing but whatthat also means is that now you need toprepare and submit your paper on timeso that you can give your livepresentation in paris in september andso there are multiple steps multiplephases things you have to do andtimelines where you have to do thesethings and today we're going to coverthe written paper that you have tosubmitso i'm going to turn it over to my palcarol and she's going to talk to youabout the deadlineshello everyone uh good to have you withus now you see that we already have adeadline that has passed butfor the pre-recorded lightning talkthere is a new extended deadlineyou have until june 30th to get thosesubmitted so those of you who thoughtyou were out of luck you have anotherchance and those are really veryimportant and people look at those anddecide if they would like to hear yourwhole paper so get take this opportunityand get those inuh now your full paper it's mandatorythis year for everybody regardless ofwhere you're presenting uh interactivepresentation or regular technicalsessions and those are due on september2ndnow you must submit those remember nopaper no podium that's the rulebut if you need to update or revise yourpaper you may do a later upload but thisone has to go first anything else thatyou change do that lateryour registration also mandatory 5th ofseptemberbutyou now can go until august 18th ibelieve is the new date and you can umget the reduced fee again up until thenfor students and early registrations soyou have two new opportunities for thisuh then the awards ceremony um you getyour slot and your screen number at theend of august but remember that that isthe deadline of wednesday 21 septemberso do not wait until the last minutebecause when you do that you can crashthe system this has happened in the pastso please don't wait until 11 45 or 1155 to turn in your paper on the deadlinedateand the full paper must be submitted oryou can't present at iecno paper no podium that is the rulei'll turn it now back to scottokayso what carol said is very important nopaper no podium so it's very importantthat you do all of these things and youdo them by the deadlines so let's talk alittle bit about submitting your paperhow do you actually what steps do youhave to go throughin order toproperly submit your paper on time sothe first thing you need to do is go tothe iaf website it's listed hereand you will find the 2022 style guideso they provide a very comprehensivestyle guideto youand one of the best things that youshould do we strongly suggestthere is a manuscript template that youcan download and you can use that asyour guide and it makes it much easierbecause and here is an example ofthe template and soyou just it's got the right layout it'sgot the right fonts it's got the rightsizes of everything and sowhat you do is you download this and yousave it on your computer and youjust fill in your correct informationinstead of what is here in the templateand if you do it that way everything isin the correct format the correct spotsand all that stuffso you'll see up at the top this veryfirst thing where it has the f 1.2.3 inin yellowthis is your particular paperand in the email that you received fromiaf accepting your paper it told youwhat session you're going to be in andso you need to put thishere at the very topthe next line in bold centered is thetitle of your paper so just uhhighlight all of that delete it and typein the paper put in your information onthe authors be sure to put who is thecorresponding author then it has theabstract it has a place for keywords youcan put a maximum of six and just followthe templatefollow the template and that will reallymake uh submitting your papermuch much easiernow in the template it uses a two columnformatexcept for that header information thattitle the author abstract you have touse the two column format that isprovided in the templateandit uses single space times new roman 10your paper must be written in englishit must be written in english and itcannot be larger than 5 megabytes whenit's uploadedand it must be uploaded as a pdfso 5 megs is about 15 pages of textbut if you have a lot of graphicsthat will make it a little bit heavierand it must beunder 5 megabytes or it will not uploadproperly solimit of 5 megsmust be uploaded as a pdfand it must be written in english and itmust use theapproved structure and format that isprovided to youin the templatenow graphics uha lot of us need to have graphics inorder tosufficiently explain what we're doingjust be aware that this uhincreases the sizenow your papermust contain your own original work andit cannot have been previously publishednor can it bein submission for publication elsewhereso this isfor all intents and purposesa peer review journal structureand it must be your own workit must be original it can't berepublished and it can't be somethingthat you hope to publish in anothervenueanother important point is you have touse the title with submittedthe when your paper was submitted thatwas reviewed in the spring meetingssession chairs accepted it and soyou should use the title that wassubmitted or if you absolutely have tochange the title you need to contactyour session share and get theirpermissiontoalter your titleand also you're going to be requiredwhen you submit tofill out a copyright informationabout who uh about the ownership of thecopyright and if you're a governmentworker there's a different slightlydifferent process than if you'resomeone else but just be aware that asyou go through the submission process itwill ask you questions aboutcopyrightsso let's talk about writing a paper andi know that any of youmay not have written many academicpapers and in fact i'm sure quite a fewof you this will be your very firstformal academic paper and so writing ahigh quality professional papercan be a challenge especially if youdon't have much experience and that'swhat we're here for we're here to helpguide youwalk you assist you in this process andthe main message i want to say is thatyou can do this everybody can do thisand it's an important learned skilleverybody needs to learn how to do thisif you're going to bea professional in the space field soworry about it just dive in and you cando this just like everybody elsemany students and young professionalshaven't written a paper beforeit can be intimidating but don't beafraid it's an important skill to learnand i'm absolutely certain that you cando itit's also important to realize thatwriting styles and formats reallyvary widely within the space communityso a very technical paper on astrodynamics or perhaps cell tele satellitetelecommunicationswould be written quite differently froma paper uh from the humanities or spacehistory or policy or a legal paper andsoone of the things that you can doislook at the various papers that havealready been published in your field inprevious iacsand all of these are available to youonline at the iec website which is awonderful serviceand sogo in and look at a couple papers fromthe last couple of years that arein your technical fieldso that you can get a sense of the styleand the tone and the structure and thatwill help guide you in terms of how toput your paper together but no matterwhat you feel no matter where you'recoming fromall of your papers should clearly layoutthe purpose of your paperthe methods that you usedthe results that you've achieved and theconclusions of your work and they needto be done in that order so this is thebasic framework for your paper thepurpose of the work the methods andtechniques that you used the resultsthat you generated and then the resultsand conclusions of your workand really uhit should indicate in the end thatuh thecontribution that this work makes to thecommunity it needs to be a stand-aloneseparate work so don't don't treat it asa part of your dissertation or a part ofsomething elsemany of you are not native englishspeakers and so we strongly recommendthat you find a native english speakerto read and copy edit your paper beforeyou submit it it's just a good idea andthat actually it's a good idea forenglish speakers get another set of eyesto look at it to help youit's very difficult to copy editour own workuh they can really help uh in in this sofeel free it's important to get somebodyelse a native english speaker to look atyour work so i'm going to turn it backover to carol again and she is going totell you uh some more importantinformationokay now it's a good idea to reviewother papers you can look for goodexamples follow the structure and toneand you'll see that some of them arereally bad and it's not necessarily theauthor's fault is that they had noguidance they didn't know what to dothey did the best they could but itdidn't turn out so wellso just as a rule be as concise aspossible don't use unnecessary words anddon't try to sound academicspeakwhat you know and speak it in conciseclear termsclearly state what you've done again howit was done and why your results matterwhy they are worthy of publicationthis should turn out to be a verystandalone account of your original worklike scott said don't try to likeextract it from a larger thesis or alarger paper this is a work unto itselfin additionwhen you submit your paperthey have the login but my understandingfrom an update from the iaf people isthat technical presenters need to uploadyour papers now on siteat thespeaker's room they have a place whereyou can upload papers and that's theplace too when even if you've uploadedit and you need to change it at the lastminute you can do it therenow this website for signing inyou use it submit your abstract so youshould still have a login and passwordyou can get a new one if you need itbut for uploading your paper you submitand then you upload when you get therenow the lightning talks as i said beforeyou have an extended deadline this isreally good because it gives you achance to give the best part of yourpaper in a really short amount of timeum when you do that you should dressprofessionally look welldon't show up in your t-shirt or yourlogo fromsome place that you really like to eatbe mindful of background and noise likeright now i'm sitting in a room wherethere is no way to turn off the airconditioner and i can hear it i hope youcan't hear it but when you do your videoyou get to control where you are you getto control the noise in the backgroundin any event speak slowly and clearlyremember your audience is internationalpeople who are not native speakersneed to hearclear slow speech because otherwise theywill miss your pointso you should practice and watchyourself do a few videos then turnaround and watch and see what you likepractice refine it and then do yourfinal video for submissionyou upload that at the iaf restrictedarea here is the link for thatand as i said your deadline is now june30th so you have time to work on thisdouble check your video it can't be morethan one minute long so truly timeyourselfaccuratelyyour upload has to be mp4 or mlv formati'll turn it back to scott nowokay soin summaryit's very important that you submiteverything on timeuh we're talking about thousands ofpapers and presentations here souh this is a big systemand it's very important that you dothese thingsby the deadline so we strongly urge youdon't wait until the last minuteuh it's just uh it's not a good ideastart working on your papers now it'snever too early to start working on yourpaper you have to go through a lot ofsteps go on the sitedownload the template save it on yourcomputergo and read some previous papers so thatyou have some idea of the structure andhow people do these things it and itjust it just takes time this is ait takes more time than you'll think andso we urge you to go ahead and beginworking on this process nowtry to write clearly for aninternational audiencemost people at the iec their firstlanguage is not english and sodon't try to sound academic or technicaldon't use the biggest words you can usejust to try to sound impressivewrite clearlyand concisely for an internationalaudience the whole goal of this is thatyou want people to understand whatyou're sayingit's always a good idea to have somebodyelse check over your paper for grammarin english this goes especially forthe majority of you who english is notthe first language butit's very difficult to copy edit yourown work and so it really helps to haveanother set of eyes look at your paperit's very important to submit the paperon timeandthe real goal of all of this is to makesure that you're able to go to paris toparticipatein the iec it's a fantastic opportunityit's a wonderful thing for those of youwho haven'tparticipated in one before and the goalis to have an excellent experience atthe conferenceso that's in a nutshell what we wantedto present to youit's pretty clear it's prettystraightforward but it's going torequire some effortit's going to require some timewe strongly urge you to go ahead andstart working on thisright away because it will always take alittle bit more time and that paper isgoing to be there in the archives foryears and years so you want it to besomething that you're proud ofso let's discuss all of this we're goingto throw it open to you allfor questions and comments be sure tofill out your slidouh questions because that helps us agreat go to slidothe hashtag here's ifpslaband submit more of thoseso the first question also upvoted quitea few timesfor the iac manuscript template is therea latexversionso uh i can already answer that this isnot the case so there is um the only thethe word template that you have to usethat was referenced here as well sopleasego and then use use that oneso the next oneiswhat whatwhat type of reference is there that wehave to usescott you want to take that since youwrote the paper rightso that's kind of like the technicaltype of uh reference or yeah thecitationstructureit uh in the templatethat it provides it specificallydescribes the appropriateuh citation format and structure and itdoes not usesome of the more common ones like apait has its owncitation structure it's clearly laid outin the templatethe short version iseachreference or citation isreferenced in the text as a bracketone for the first referencedown in the text a bracket two bracketthreeand then at the end of your paper it hasaan area forreferences and you again it begins witha bracket one and then it has thecitationso if has its own uh structure for thisit's clearly described in the templateand it's very important that you use uhthe structure that is providedokay next question is uh interesting onecan the abstract still be changedi know it cannotwell i assume it's meant that theabstract that you've submittedpreviouslyto the one that you're putting in thepaperyeah thatuh the abstract that you've submitted ofcourse cannot be changed if you havesome slight adjustments in your paperbecause you have new information youwant to put in or something turns out tobe different because of your researchand that was part of your originalabstract you can add that into the oneon your paper but the one you submittedis is there and it can't be changedyeah and and that's understandablebecauseyour your session chairs have created aaa group of papers that touch ondifferent aspects and if people justsubmit a totally different paper foruh for something then itit is not what the session chairuh it's not the the complete meal thatthey put togetherand so uh if you found a typoor something like that of course that'sokay but really the abstract that yousubmitneeds to be the abstract in your writtenpaperokay the next one here is what shouldthe uh lightning talk contain any tipsfor captivating uh lightning talkyou're gonna do a lightning talk scottsowhat was captivating yeah so uhthat's a great questionuhlet me start out by what it should notbe don't have it just be using and soyou can see that i presented my researchin a very boring waythat's not what you want to do it's alightning talk it's supposed to have anelectrical charge it's supposed to havea zap to it it's supposed to becaptivating andinteresting and the whole idea of thelightning talks i love the conceptthe whole idea is togive people an opportunity to quicklylook through many many different papersit's only 60 secondsto help people decide what they want togo seeone of the problems at the ic is we havemany concurrent sessions you can't seeeverything and so the lightning talksare tooit's your chance touh put yourself out there toto captivate peopleand to make them want to come see yourtalk sosuggestions be be alive be animateduhyou can show slides it's okay if youwant to show uh two or three slides as aa tease but uh the it's a very differentformat and sothemy advice would beuh try to make it interesting try tomake ituhgrab people's interests and it will cutoff at 60 seconds so make sure that youkeep it at 59 seconds because you don'twant to lose the conclusion you don'twant to drop the punch line so it willautomatically cut it off in exactly 60seconds but and this also takes practicedon't wait until the last second tosubmit your lightning talk and the otheradvice is you can go on the the verywonderful iaf website and it has manyexamples of lightning talks from lastyear and previous years so go on firstthing and look at some of theselightning talks and see and there aresome really really good innovative onesand there are also some really bad onessorry guys butyou can learn a lot by looking at reallygood lightning talks and some not sogood ones and take a little bit of timefocus on your background like carol wassaying your lighting you want to havesome good front lighting want people tobe able to see you but the mostimportant thing is say somethinginterestingsay something that will make people wantto come to your paperyeah but also don'tspeak too fast i meanmaybe don't do what scott justdemonstrated being too boring too slowand to likeone monotone voice but at the same timespeak it speak uh slowly enough that youcan uh still understand even if you havetoin factjust yesterday i sent carol an email i iwon't name names but i sent carol alightning talk from last yearthat was someonewhowho thought the idea was to put theirentire 10-minute talk in 60 secondsand it wasit was the fastest and for i thought itwas ondouble speedthis person was like exceeding the speedlimit and it was impossible tounderstand so don't do thatdon't be too slow boring don't be toofastput it right very easy to uh use evenuse to your phone after you've writtenup your speechuse your phone in selfie mode and filmyourself or something and thenplay it back see if it uh if it's itappears good to you so that you haveyour timing right and then record itokay let's go on because we are gettingmore questions in so we want to finishat some pointsonext one is i struggle so brutally withwriting i have no idea where to startshould i just write anything that comesto my mindi don't think you need to writeeverything that comes into your mind butyou can focus take a few bulletswhatdid you studywhat happened why is it importantwhat did you get out of it the thingsthat you found that you think areimportant to share with other peoplethis paper even though it's the writtenpart it's about communicationso you want to focus on why did you dothiswhat were your results maybe what weresome of your problems and what have youconcluded and once you get those bulletsdown you can write around it and fleshit outbut it doesn't need to be every singlething you ever discovered it needs to bethe most important points and the thingsthat you would like people to take awayand to showhow your research or your studies weredone in a methodical and professionalwayand then you can you know just pick outsome more important points and starttheresome people start at the end they startwith their conclusions and they workback there are many different ways ofapproaching your writing but i think thefirst thing is what do you really wantto say what is the most important scottyes all that is very true that manypeople struggle terribly with writing itit comes very hard for someand uh we work with our students all thetime in in thisone thing is to is just practicepart of it is just to write if you'reone of the people who who struggle withthis and there are manyuhone good suggestion is try to just writesomething every dayjust a little bit write one paragraphwrite aboutwhen you went to the grocery store todaywrite about that blasted professor whokeeps bothering you about your writingjust sit down and write a little bit ofsomethingevery day it helps you with thefamiliarityi agree that with carol that we allhave to find our own path uhthat works for us as carol said somepeople like to start at the conclusionwhat's the punch lineuhi sometimes advise studentsuhlay out the frameworkin the ic it tells you there's fourthings you're supposed to lay out youhave the abstract there's you knowwhat did you dothe methods the conclusions and so youcan create kind of aa framework and then one one thing i'vetold some students is is the way towrite is one sentence at a timeyou can't sit down and say oh i've gotto write this whole big paperor or i have to write my dissertationyou know and it's too big you can'tnobody can do it but you can write onesentence at a time and so if you cancreate a framework like carol saidhere's the introduction here's themethod and techniquehere's the conclusions the resultsyou can break it down intosingle sentences and you can write onesentence at a time but the best thing isjust like public speaking the best wayto learn how to do this you just have todo it sothe best way to learn how to write isis just write something a little bitsomething every day but it i know it'shard for many people but i also knowi've had many students who came inwith just a horribleinability to write andended upbeing very very good writers so you cando itso now that you've written your grocerystore novel umthe next question comes inhow many rounds of editing would yourecommendi would have somebody else help me withthe editing you know what your contentshould be but how it's presented and howit's organized and in the finalversion how it reads well i wouldn'tjust do it myself if you havea friend or a colleague who is a nativeenglish speaker of course i would havethem have a look and see if there'sanything because a different pair ofeyes will turn up some small butimportant things about the content ofyour paper the way it's put togethermostly i think when we write our ownwe correct things in our mind even ifit's not correct on the paper so havinga fresh pair of eyes is a good way toavoid that kind of thing that's one tipi would have scottanother tip on the other side of thatcoin is if you are a native englishspeakerand especially if you're writing in atechnical fieldand you have a non-native englishspeaker in your lab or groupget themto look at it because if they can'tunderstand ityou need to change it so it helps inboth directionsuh and uh it's very helpful ifif sort of the the least skilled englishspeaker in your labcan understand your paperthat's a good paper becausethe whole community will be able tounderstand it but also a good thing todo is write some and leave it for a dayjust let it lie and then come back to itand you'll have a little bit freshereyes you'll say oh did i say it that wayso it often it's very difficult to copyat immediately after you've finishedwriting it sometimes it's a good ideajust to let it lie fallow for a day ortwo and come back at it with some fresheyesyeah but how do you resist thetemptation to correct and edit the texthundreds of times yeah and and uhi i suffer from this myself i know iknow we all dobut ultimately the good thing is we havea deadlineandand unlike your dissertation where itcould just go on and on foreveruh you've got a deadline here and soyou've you've got to that's part oflearning how to write isis learning when to let it go and dosomething elseso you're saying we shouldn't start theday of the deadline uh with writing thepaperso not if you want to be in parisso how early should you start writingyour paper for the congresstodayi'd go i really i would go today anddownload the templateandsave it in a folder on your computername it what the paper isandlook at the template understand itplug in what you know the authors theabstractandlook at a couple of papers uh in the icarchivesin similar areas because as we saidbefore a technical paper will besomewhat different from a space historyor humanities paper but i'd start todayyou can't start too early download thattemplateplug inwhat iskeep the templatebecause you might need to start over youmight need to go back to it save thetemplate as your paperlook at a couple of others plug in whatyou knowand go ahead and get startedwhat if you're suffering fromprocrastination any advice on on uh yeahdealing with this issuethere are a couple of really goodyoutube videos short ones and a coupleof ted talks on procrastinationi would just google that and have a lookthese people have done it and havefigured out how to help themselves ornotbut it's a good use of 10 or 15 minutesof your time to see what other peoplehave said about dealing with thatumi'm a procrastinator and i find thati've done some of my best work when istarted it at the last minute but that'sprobably dumb luck it's not it's notwhat i have learned to do now but when iwas in college for example i used towait till the last minute and it justcreates stressand you always find something at the endthat you wished you hadn't done orwished you had doneso starting earlier is a lot better thantrying to wait even if you areprocrastinating about some parts of ityou can work on a few things just bit bybit as scott said one sentence at a timebut get something on the paper so thatyou have a process that you can workthroughumit's it's not a sure cure but just ifyou can force yourself to just write alittle bit even if you never use it thatwill help you continue to move forwardscottyeah well that is trueit's the bane of uh all of us uh the thedesire to procrastinate we all sufferfrom it in various formsmy suggestion is as soon as you getthrough watching this webinargo on the website and download thetemplate and put your title and abstractinand then you've already started you'vealready begunand uh that's that'sa good way to do it butit's hard to write a good paper at thevery last secondreally really difficultokay now you have written your paperyou've edited the paperenough times not hundreds of timesyou finished your paper do you bring itwith to your session chairs is that agood idea to bring a copy of your paperto the sectionthey always used to bring at least twocopies to the session as a session chairmyself i really appreciate having a copythat i can kind of glance at whilepeople are talking it helps me too if ihave questions that i'd like to ask themthen i can refer to something specificin the paper so i i think it's not a badidea i don't believe it's a requirementanymore but a long time ago you used tohave to bring a couple of copies anywayit used to be a requirement it's notanymore but i think it's a good idea itdoesn't add that much weight to yourpackingand it it shows your session chair thatyou've got your act togetherit makes a good impression even thoughit's not required anymoreyou're it you're handing them the papergive them some they can look at it andit makes a very good impression i thinkso i would say yes go ahead and printout a couple of copies andbring one and in our next webinar andwe'll talk about that at the very endwe're going totalk specifically about how to deliveryour presentationand we'll give you lots of hints andhelpful suggestions on how tosuccessfullypresent your paperat the upcoming congress in paris sowe'll we'll cover that in our next oneokay very good so umnow anotherumyeah more specific question here mygroup is facing difficulties indeveloping some points of the paperis it okay to present only themethodology without numerical datascott why don't you take that onebecause the sessions i chair are morelike outreach and education sometimesthere's no data reallyi meanthe key thing is you have to have someconclusionswhy are you taking 10 minutes of youraudience's lifeto tell them about thisif you don't have conclusionsmaybe you shouldn't uh be submitting thepaperbecause this needs to be completedworthwhile work that that somebody wantsto hear aboutso i would focus on the conclusionyou only have 10 minutes so you don'thave a great deal of timeto walk people through and it's verydifficult for people to be able tofollow all the statistical analysis oror all that stuffi would suggestfocus on the conclusionswhat's important about this why shouldpeople want to know about thiswhat did you discoveryes you do want to tell people how youcame upwith your conclusions but i wouldn'tworry too much with the amount of timeyou have aboutyou knowtelling all the chain of evidence if youwillon how you got your raw data andprocessed it and that the real importantthing is the conclusions what did youlearn and why is this importanti don't know if that answers yourquestionone thing about that if i could just addthat you can say here's our conclusionand it's supported by the data you cansee in the paperif you have a lot of data to support itbut it's more important i think forpeople to know the bottom line than itis the chain as scott says of theevidencei guess you have to ask yourself thequestion why why am i writing this paperor better better yet why why shouldsomebody read itso if there'snothing that supports that and yeahum next one how many references should icheck so i'm not sure how this is meantbut maybe how manysimilarpapers or other[Music]references in the literatureumyeah it's always a good question youknow andlong papers or dissertations you'll havehundredsthis is not thati think you want to demonstratethat you havesearched the literatureyou want to demonstrate that you haveknowledgeof the literature and that you haveknowledge of the current state ofpracticebutsome people i find put in way too manycitationsunnecessarilyi i would only for example if you'retalking about one particular thing somepeople will put like three of the samethree papers referring the same thingyou don't need to do thatsoit's not a fair answer but enoughyou need to put enoughreferences in but don't put in a wholelot of references thatput the key ones the key points that youwant people togo to particularly if you or your labhave publishedsimilar work or work that leads up tothe work that you're doing that's a goodthing to put the publishing or thecitationin so people read your paper can go backand look at thatthat technique uhlets you takeawayfrom having to explain thatif you willso you can refer to previous workthatbuilds up on the work you're doing nowbut yeahenoughyou need enough references but that's athat's a that's not a fair answer don'tput too many in don't put references injustto put them inbut uh hit the key high points i that'snot a good answer carol or patrick youmighti'm going to take this literally aboutchecking referencesi cannot tell you how important it is ifyou're using references that are onlineor linksbefore you turn it in make sure thosestill work check them that way becausesometimes they change sometimes they goawayand the worst thing that can happen issomebody's really interested in yourpaper and you have references that areno longer goodbecause they've disappeared off the webor whatever so if you have any like thatplease do check them as late as you uhupload your paper so that you know thatif somebody wants to go to them they'reactually there for them to read it'salways better if you can to put writtenpublication citations rather than webcitationsyeah unfortunately a lot of people don'tanymore but you're right it's muchbetter not to rely on thoseokay i mean my answer would have been 42but i don't think thatumare there any example complete papersand presentations we can refer toyeah hundreds hundreds on the iaf uhwebsite just go to the iaf website uhthe staff areon the call maybe they could put in theuhtheappropriate link but there are many manypapers many manyuh interactive talksi have to choose the libraryyeah and it's a wonderful resource andit'sfor research also but yeah veryimportant so go find some that aresimilar tothe discipline and domain that you'regoing to write about and you can get asense of how other people havestructured their talksand one of the things that some of thesessions do that i knowis that if there are papers in thesymposium that are particularlyimpressive orworthy of publication they single thoseout and they do have a short list ofsome from each of the sessions inour education and outreach for examplethere are always a few papers that werefer forward for publication or foradditional recognition so if you canfind out what those arethat's a good place to start because thesession chairs have chosen them as goodexamplesthe important thing is just to startstart try to try to get a start ifyou're if you haven't written a paper oryouit's difficult for youthe key thing is just todownload that template look at a coupleof papers see how they're structuredmake your stuff into some sort of anoutline and then just start trying toyou knowplug in some sectionsuh and uh you'll be surprised howquickly it might come togetherokay a couple quick ones uh are werequired to to submit a lightning talkand the answer to that is nocan you re-give the new deadline for thelightning talk that would be the 30th ofjune rightyeahand thencan the paper be presented by more thanone authorumimean i i would say in theory yes butit's not necessarily the best choiceany thoughts on that you can't dependsit's not uh it's not prohibitedand in some cases like if you have twopeople who did very different aspects ofthe workit can worki wouldn't do more than twoand if you do two you need to make surethat yourehearse and time it well butit's not prohibitedbutit'smaybe not always the best uh way toapproach ityeah in one of our uh seminars fromprevious years we had a person whoreceived a grant but they had ademonstration to do with what they wereworking on and in their presentationthey needed a couple of other peoplefrom their project to do thedemonstration and they did that and itwas very effective but that is anunusual caselet's i would like to show the slidoresultsif we can if we have internationalcongress so you guys have somesome learning to do about uh writing andwriting skills and uhbut i know you can do it everybody cando it it's just a little intimidatingand uh but it's a wonderful skill it's askill you want to develop as aprofessional in the space community nomatter what area you're going to beworking inyou need to develop thatpaper writing skillso70are not native english speakersand uhit's unfairi i readily admit it's unfairuh i work and do research in france anduh go to french congresses and struggleuh mightilyto uh to understand and follow the flowand it's it's difficult but it's alsovery important that i do that because uhit's important for carol and i andeveryone to understand thethe level of difficulty it takes toparticipate in an international congressand uhgood for you for doing itsohow do people feel about their skillsthis that's pretty good you knowin the middle ummore pope somebody just added four so wejust grew therebut um the good news is is only 15percent of you uhrate yourself as just a one or a two sothat'sthat's gooduh so yeah look at the changes in realtime uh slido is so cooli really likeokay wellthen i think we have come
