within it that make</text><text start="59.46" dur="3.39">it so great at handling the real-time</text><text start="60.989" dur="4.19">manipulation of high bandwidth digital</text><text start="62.85" dur="4.439">media and low cost personal computers</text><text start="65.179" dur="3.61">Before we jump into the OS itself</text><text start="67.289" dur="4.851">there&amp;#39;s a couple of people we&amp;#39;d like you</text><text start="68.789" dur="3.351">to meet so why don&amp;#39;t you follow me</text><text start="74.149" dur="7.15">hello good afternoon and welcome</text><text start="77.369" dur="7.741">let me try and explain what we&amp;#39;re trying</text><text start="81.299" dur="6.901">to accomplish with the BOS first we set</text><text start="85.11" dur="6.179">out to start from a blank slate this</text><text start="88.2" dur="6.869">frees us from all the layers and the</text><text start="91.289" dur="6.631">years of bug fixes and improvements that</text><text start="95.069" dur="4.98">you see as sediments on all the</text><text start="97.92" dur="7.41">operating system platforms and make them</text><text start="100.049" dur="8.97">slower harder to debug and really make</text><text start="105.33" dur="6.569">it make it difficult to make the best of</text><text start="109.019" dur="5.25">new audio and video technology which is</text><text start="111.899" dur="4.62">what we are concentrating on with a POS</text><text start="114.269" dur="4.921">we are trying to create the ideal</text><text start="116.519" dur="6.3">platform for the development of a new</text><text start="119.19" dur="6.9">breed of new digital media applications</text><text start="122.819" dur="5.521">you&amp;#39;ve seen the success of linux so if</text><text won&amp;#39;t complain thanks for your</text><text start="204.78" dur="14.099">time and enjoy the demonstration we&amp;#39;re</text><text start="216.72" dur="3.329">ready to take a look at the BOS but</text><text start="218.879" dur="2.521">before we jump right in</text><text start="220.049" dur="2.881">i&amp;#39;d like to tell you a little bit about</text><text start="221.4" dur="4.199">the computer so you can gauge the</text><text start="222.93" dur="6">performance that you see this computer</text><text start="225.599" dur="5.64">has 64 megabytes of RAM a three gigabyte</text><text start="228.93" dur="5.07">hard drive and two Hauppauge video</text><text start="231.239" dur="3.84">capture cards these are about $70 cards</text><text start="234" dur="2.97">that you can purchase at your local</text><text start="235.079" dur="3.75">computer store and we&amp;#39;re using them to</text><text start="236.97" dur="3.65">capture uncompressed video to play with</text><text start="238.829" dur="3.78">inside of the operating system</text><text start="240.62" dur="3.82">everything you see on the screen will be</text><text start="242.609" dur="4.38">done in software there&amp;#39;s no additional</text><text start="244.44" dur="4.019">accelerated hardware the only unique</text><text start="246.989" dur="3.511">thing about this computer is the</text><text start="248.459" dur="4.5">processor rather the number of</text><text start="250.5" dur="5.069">processors we&amp;#39;re utilizing a dual</text><text start="252.959" dur="4.65">Pentium 2 system running at 266</text><text start="255.569" dur="4.441">megahertz although we&amp;#39;ll utilize both</text><text start="257.609" dur="4.081">processors for most of the demo at times</text><text start="260.01" dur="3.45">we&amp;#39;ll turn one off so you can gauge how</text><text start="261.69" dur="13.46">the system runs on a unit processor</text><text start="263.46" dur="13.519">machine ok let&amp;#39;s get started</text><text start="275.15" dur="4.53">we haven&amp;#39;t made any radical user</text><text start="276.979" dur="3.991">interface changes in the BOS the idea</text><text start="279.68" dur="3.78">was to make the learning curve of the</text><text start="280.97" dur="6.15">BOS as gentle as possible so there&amp;#39;s a</text><text start="283.46" dur="5.76">familiar concept of disks folders which</text><text start="287.12" dur="4.95">you double-click on and files and</text><text start="289.22" dur="4.53">folders inside of those everything</text><text start="292.07" dur="3.93">inside of the BOS is live so as i</text><text start="293.75" dur="4.32">manipulate this window you have live</text><text start="296" dur="4.82">updating even as i open and close the</text><text start="298.07" dur="2.75">size of the window</text><text start="301.54" dur="4.27">there&amp;#39;s context-sensitive menus so if i</text><text start="304.46" dur="3.45">wanted to move this item somewhere else</text><text start="305.81" dur="4.59">on a disk i simply navigate down to</text><text start="307.91" dur="10.68">hierarchical file system and place it</text><text start="310.4" dur="10.799">where I want this utility up in the</text><text start="318.59" dur="4.199">corner is called the desk bar it does a</text><text start="321.199" dur="3.511">number of things the first and most</text><text start="322.789" dur="4.891">obvious is it keeps a list of your</text><text start="324.71" dur="5.82">currently active applications if I run</text><text start="327.68" dur="5.88">the clock application you&amp;#39;ll see it&amp;#39;s</text><text start="330.53" dur="5.16">listed in the desk bar I can customize</text><text start="333.56" dur="3.87">the look and feel the desk bar placing</text><text start="335.69" dur="5.13">it on almost any fringe of the screen I</text><text start="337.43" dur="8.13">can compress it place it along the top</text><text start="340.82" dur="7.71">of the screen in any corner along the</text><text start="345.56" dur="4.65">bottom and I&amp;#39;ll leave up here in this</text><text start="348.53" dur="2.509">corner which is where I&amp;#39;m used to using</text><text start="350.21" dur="3.45">it</text><text start="351.039" dur="4.931">one thing we strive for in the BOS is a</text><text start="353.66" dur="3.9">very responsive user interface the way</text><text start="355.97" dur="3.09">i&amp;#39;ll demonstrate this is by bringing up</text><text start="357.56" dur="2.31">a number of items on the screen at the</text><text start="359.06" dur="5.88">same time</text><text start="359.87" dur="7.47">first i&amp;#39;ll launch a sound this is a</text><text start="364.94" dur="5.699">16-bit stereo audio file being played at</text><text start="367.34" dur="4.859">44.1 kilohertz off the hard drive even</text><text start="370.639" dur="4.041">though we&amp;#39;re playing this audio file I</text><text start="372.199" dur="5">can move Windows around the strange</text><text start="374.68" dur="8.28">access menus</text><text start="377.199" dur="10.641">launch applications I&amp;#39;ll launch our CPU</text><text start="382.96" dur="4.88">monitor as well as our Mandelbrot</text><text start="388.64" dur="6.39">so I can iterate in real-time down on</text><text start="391.44" dur="5.7">the Mandelbrot and even bring up a movie</text><text start="395.03" dur="4.09">the first thing you&amp;#39;ll notice as I move</text><text start="397.14" dur="4.2">this movie around the screen is that</text><text start="399.12" dur="4.59">nothing stops processing the movie</text><text start="401.34" dur="3.69">continues to play all of its frames the</text><text start="403.71" dur="7.83">audio continues to play without any</text><text start="405.03" dur="8.94">glitches you can have up to nine virtual</text><text start="411.54" dur="5.94">workspaces inside the BLS I&amp;#39;ll bring up</text><text start="413.97" dur="4.56">the workspaces preference panel and the</text><text start="417.48" dur="2.67">best way for me to really demonstrate</text><text start="418.53" dur="7.83">this is also to bring up the screen</text><text start="420.15" dur="8.73">preferences panel here I&amp;#39;m working in a</text><text start="426.36" dur="5.61">workspace and thousands of colors and if</text><text start="428.88" dur="4.76">I switch to workspace two and then drag</text><text start="431.97" dur="4.77">the screen preferences panel across</text><text start="433.64" dur="4.93">you&amp;#39;ll notice this workspaces in 256</text><text start="436.74" dur="4.92">colors and if I go to the third</text><text start="438.57" dur="5.94">workspace and drag across again we&amp;#39;re</text><text start="441.66" dur="4.14">working in millions of colors this is a</text><text start="444.51" dur="3.45">great way to organize how you work with</text><text start="445.8" dur="4.17">your applications perhaps productivity</text><text start="447.96" dur="3.75">in one window video editing in another</text><text start="449.97" dur="3.87">it&amp;#39;s also a great way to preview</text><text start="451.71" dur="6.36">graphics and different color depths I&amp;#39;ll</text><text start="453.84" dur="5.96">bring up a graphic and you can see what</text><text start="458.07" dur="4.92">it looks like in millions of colors and</text><text start="459.8" dur="5.59">if I simply switch to the 256 color</text><text start="462.99" dur="4.38">workspace and drag that graphic across</text><text start="465.39" dur="10.11">you can see what it looks like on an</text><text start="467.37" dur="10.41">8-bit machine across the internet the</text><text start="475.5" dur="4.59">BOS is a fully symmetric multiprocessing</text><text start="477.78" dur="4.65">operating system that means that the</text><text start="480.09" dur="4.05">entire OS from kernel to applications</text><text start="482.43" dur="4.62">can take advantage of more than one</text><text start="484.14" dur="4.5">processor in a system in fact the BOS</text><text start="487.05" dur="4.29">has been run on systems with up to eight</text><text start="488.64" dur="5.07">processors this means as you go from one</text><text start="491.34" dur="5.58">to two processors you get a nearly 100%</text><text start="493.71" dur="3.78">increase in performance this application</text><text start="496.92" dur="2.73">that I&amp;#39;ll show you</text><text start="497.49" dur="3.66">cinema4d takes advantage of the</text><text start="499.65" dur="6.08">symmetric multi-processing</text><text start="501.15" dur="4.58">in the BOS i&amp;#39;ll load up an image</text><text start="508.46" dur="4.66">and also load up our CPU monitors so you</text><text start="511.259" dur="7.59">can see the level of activity on each of</text><text start="513.12" dur="7.529">the CPUs the more green you see on each</text><text start="518.849" dur="4.261">bar the more that particular processor</text><text start="520.649" dur="7.801">is being utilized I&amp;#39;ll go ahead and</text><text start="523.11" dur="7.53">select render the threads in this</text><text start="528.45" dur="3.81">application are set to have a partner</text><text start="530.64" dur="3.509">such that they soak up whatever excess</text><text start="532.26" dur="3.3">CPU is available and that&amp;#39;s why you see</text><text start="534.149" dur="4.411">both processors go to work on the</text><text start="535.56" dur="5.279">problem let me turn off a processor for</text><text start="538.56" dur="8.85">a minute and go ahead and re-render this</text><text start="540.839" dur="9">image what you&amp;#39;ll notice as I turn the</text><text start="547.41" dur="6.36">processor on and off is the rendering</text><text start="549.839" dur="6.031">speeds up and slows down the vos</text><text start="553.77" dur="3.93">dynamically handles allocating threads</text><text start="555.87" dur="4.5">to whatever the next available processor</text><text start="557.7" dur="4.86">is today your thread might run on</text><text start="560.37" dur="9.69">processor 1 and tomorrow it&amp;#39;ll run on</text><text start="562.56" dur="10.17">processor for the vos implements</text><text start="570.06" dur="4.08">protected memory applications and even</text><text start="572.73" dur="3.39">the operating system processes</text><text start="574.14" dur="3.68">themselves all run in their own</text><text start="576.12" dur="4.32">protected memory address space</text><text start="577.82" dur="3.85">this means no single misbehaving</text><text start="580.44" dur="2.76">application could take down the</text><text start="581.67" dur="4.95">operating system or any other</text><text start="583.2" dur="5.1">application we&amp;#39;ve intentionally crash an</text><text start="586.62" dur="3.719">application inside the B operating</text><text start="588.3" dur="4.2">system what you see on screen is the</text><text start="590.339" dur="4.051">resulting error message although this</text><text start="592.5" dur="4.079">application is crashed we can still run</text><text start="594.39" dur="9.98">other applications I&amp;#39;ll go ahead and</text><text start="596.579" dur="10.171">launch a movie and the clock application</text><text start="604.37" dur="5.14">we can return to our error message and</text><text start="606.75" dur="5.22">get details about the crash exactly what</text><text start="609.51" dur="4.86">happened and where and even go into the</text><text start="611.97" dur="4.23">debugger at this point we could do</text><text start="614.37" dur="4.469">things like seeing the state of the</text><text start="616.2" dur="5.699">memory at the time of the crash as soon</text><text start="618.839" dur="4.591">as you exit the debugger the VMS cleans</text><text start="621.899" dur="4.19">up and you can launch that application</text><text start="623.43" dur="2.659">again</text><text start="632.58" dur="5.53">all the networking in the BOS is based</text><text start="635.44" dur="4.44">on the internet standard tcp/ip protocol</text><text start="638.11" dur="3.45">i&amp;#39;ll bring up the network preferences</text><text start="639.88" dur="4.92">panel for a moment we&amp;#39;ll take a little</text><text start="641.56" dur="5.37">look we have support for multiple IP</text><text start="644.8" dur="5.19">addresses multiple Ethernet cards</text><text start="646.93" dur="8.49">there&amp;#39;s dial and support through PPP our</text><text start="649.99" dur="7.38">moto support is quite extensive we also</text><text start="655.42" dur="4.38">have a built-in ftp server for file</text><text start="657.37" dur="4.53">transfers and a built-in telnet server</text><text start="659.8" dur="4.11">you can actually log in remotely to the</text><text start="661.9" dur="4.35">BOS and launch applications from the</text><text start="663.91" dur="4.2">command line you can make any changes to</text><text start="666.25" dur="4.34">the networking on the fly without having</text><text start="668.11" dur="5.43">to restart the operating system itself</text><text start="670.59" dur="5.56">we have a built-in web server and web</text><text start="673.54" dur="5.04">browser our web browser is mostly here</text><text start="676.15" dur="5.01">because all the documentation in the BOS</text><text start="678.58" dur="3.78">is written in HTML and we thought it&amp;#39;d</text><text start="681.16" dur="9.75">be nice if you could read it right from</text><text start="682.36" dur="10.62">start up we refer to the BLS as the</text><text start="690.91" dur="3.75">medio s that&amp;#39;s because it&amp;#39;s been</text><text start="692.98" dur="3.75">designed from the ground up to handle</text><text start="694.66" dur="4.29">the real-time manipulation of high</text><text start="696.73" dur="4.98">bandwidth digital media such as graphics</text><text start="698.95" dur="10.47">audio and video let&amp;#39;s take a look at</text><text start="701.71" dur="9.21">graphics I&amp;#39;ll bring up this 3d book what</text><text start="709.42" dur="3.87">you can see is I can manipulate the</text><text start="710.92" dur="6.51">pages in real time with good performance</text><text start="713.29" dur="6.03">turning them back and forth whipping and</text><text start="717.43" dur="4.5">warming them corresponding to how hard</text><text start="719.32" dur="4.14">or how soft I pull the mouse a grade</text><text start="721.93" dur="4.41">book is pretty boring so let&amp;#39;s dress it</text><text start="723.46" dur="6.57">up a little bit I&amp;#39;ll put this image here</text><text start="726.34" dur="5.28">and this image down here now when I grab</text><text start="730.03" dur="2.91">the pages you&amp;#39;ll notice that the image</text><text start="731.62" dur="3.33">stays nicely map to the available</text><text start="732.94" dur="4.86">surface of the page no matter how hard</text><text start="734.95" dur="5.13">or how soft I pulled the novels we&amp;#39;re</text><text start="737.8" dur="4.56">not limited to static images I can grab</text><text start="740.08" dur="5.76">a couple of movies here place one here</text><text start="742.36" dur="5.34">and one here and again grab the page and</text><text start="745.84" dur="3.42">turn it back and forth what you&amp;#39;ll</text><text start="747.7" dur="3.12">notice is the movie continues to play</text><text start="749.26" dur="4.08">while it&amp;#39;s being mapped to the available</text><text start="750.82" dur="3.89">surface of the page things don&amp;#39;t stop</text><text start="753.34" dur="10.62">processing just because I&amp;#39;m utilizing</text><text start="754.71" dur="12.9">this one object real-time audio control</text><text start="763.96" dur="3.65">is another area where the pos-x</text><text start="768.299" dur="4.75">this application is essentially a 3d</text><text start="771.039" dur="5.07">graphical representation of a soundboard</text><text start="773.049" dur="4.86">I have 16 separate stereo CD quality</text><text start="776.109" dur="4.62">audio tracks being run off with a hard</text><text start="777.909" dur="5.85">drive at the same time I can manipulate</text><text start="780.729" dur="5.85">any one of them individually for example</text><text start="783.759" dur="6.51">I can take this audio track give it a</text><text start="786.579" dur="8.84">lot of reverb charge me up all the other</text><text start="790.269" dur="18.84">tracks I saw my future enlarged and then</text><text start="795.419" dur="16.69">extremes off of the threads incorporated</text><text start="809.109" dur="6.69">into the foreground I can bring all the</text><text start="812.109" dur="6.51">instrument play and fade the entire song</text><text start="815.799" dur="5.51">into the background and then bring it</text><text start="818.619" dur="2.69">back to the foreground</text><text start="829.9" dur="6.52">the BLS also handles the viewing and</text><text start="832.67" dur="7.95">real-time manipulation of video you can</text><text start="836.42" dur="6.06">simply watch TV on your PC we preserve</text><text start="840.62" dur="5.67">nice motion on the screen even as you</text><text start="842.48" dur="6.39">move this video window around you can</text><text start="846.29" dur="5.85">resize the window and in this case we</text><text start="848.87" dur="4.68">don&amp;#39;t lose a single frame I can even</text><text start="852.14" dur="5.69">have windows fall in front of a video</text><text start="853.55" dur="4.28">window and we do intelligent clipping</text><text start="860.38" dur="6.88">you can use your PC as a VCR we&amp;#39;ve got</text><text start="865.34" dur="4.08">our source material coming in I&amp;#39;ll go to</text><text start="867.26" dur="5.31">the transport screen and begin hitting</text><text start="869.42" dur="4.74">record we&amp;#39;re now recording uncompressed</text><text start="872.57" dur="4.47">video right to the harddrive</text><text start="874.16" dur="5.61">I&amp;#39;ll get a few seconds of material hit</text><text start="877.04" dur="4.41">stop and play we continue to play our</text><text start="879.77" dur="3.42">original source but we&amp;#39;re also not</text><text start="881.45" dur="3.98">playing the uncompressed video we record</text><text start="883.19" dur="4.74">it to the hard drive back in this window</text><text start="885.43" dur="7.39">having two video windows one over the</text><text start="887.93" dur="7.02">other is a snap for the BOS let&amp;#39;s take</text><text start="892.82" dur="6.21">it a step further and apply real-time</text><text start="894.95" dur="9.3">video effects all in software I&amp;#39;ll bring</text><text start="899.03" dur="7.02">up my second source so I&amp;#39;ve got two</text><text start="904.25" dur="3.54">source windows and a compositing window</text><text start="906.05" dur="3.06">I&amp;#39;ll make that window much bigger so you</text><text start="907.79" dur="4.79">can see the effects that I&amp;#39;m going to</text><text start="909.11" dur="5.55">apply so here in real time on software I</text><text start="912.58" dur="7.72">can come in and do something like a</text><text start="914.66" dur="10.26">vertical wipe a horizontal slide from</text><text start="920.3" dur="6.15">one source to the other something a</text><text start="924.92" dur="6.36">little more complex like a sparkle</text><text start="926.45" dur="7.19">effect from one source to the other or</text><text start="931.28" dur="2.36">checkers</text><text start="934.959" dur="4.181">we can add a nice dissolve where we</text><text start="937.67" dur="2.97">actually have transparency on both</text><text start="939.14" dur="10.56">sources in the same window at the same</text><text start="940.64" dur="10.53">time and even do a page flip the other</text><text start="949.7" dur="3.569">thing to notice here is as I do that</text><text start="951.17" dur="3.78">page flip when the very end of the page</text><text start="953.269" dur="3.031">starts to curl we actually reverse the</text><text start="954.95" dur="12.72">image and play it on the back side of</text><text start="956.3" dur="12.84">the page flip although we&amp;#39;ve seen some</text><text start="967.67" dur="3.06">great performance so far we haven&amp;#39;t</text><text start="969.14" dur="4.259">really stressed the be operating system</text><text start="970.73" dur="4.59">out just yet let&amp;#39;s throw a bunch of</text><text start="973.399" dur="5.521">applications at it and see just how far</text><text start="975.32" dur="8.34">we can go I&amp;#39;ll start by launching these</text><text start="978.92" dur="6.359">five applications let&amp;#39;s place our CPU</text><text start="983.66" dur="3.57">monitor right here up at the top of the</text><text start="985.279" dur="5.581">screen so you can always see the level</text><text start="987.23" dur="5.82">of activity on the CPUs fonts inside of</text><text start="990.86" dur="5.64">the BOS are all scaleable in real time</text><text start="993.05" dur="5.64">up and down in fact I can do this as I</text><text start="996.5" dur="3.839">cycle through the installed fonts I can</text><text start="998.69" dur="6.829">apply any level of shearing back and</text><text start="1000.339" dur="5.18">forth and even rotate in 360 degrees</text><text start="1005.73" dur="8.68">let&amp;#39;s make that a little smaller and</text><text start="1007.63" dur="9.69">move it out of the way we&amp;#39;ve got our</text><text start="1014.41" dur="4.35">minesweeper down here and also our web</text><text start="1017.32" dur="4.92">browser which I&amp;#39;ll send off to the B</text><text start="1018.76" dur="5.16">homepage will make our now they brought</text><text start="1022.24" dur="5.66">a little smaller and iterate down on</text><text start="1023.92" dur="3.98">that and place it over here</text><text start="1029.97" dur="9.659">let&amp;#39;s bring up some TV as well I&amp;#39;ll
