welcome to techychat in today's episodewe will be taking another look at ghostbsd this time it's the latest version ofghostbsd22.06.18and rather excitingly at least for meit's based on freebsd13.1 which i reviewed recently and notedit had great speed improvements andadditional hardware compatibilityso what can ghost bsd do with this newengine under the hood let's find outafter the intro[Music][Applause][Music]okay so here we are this is the ghostbsd installer this is the screen thatyou're presented with when you downloadthe iso and you copy that onto a usbstick you can use something like bolinaetcher or any of the usbcreation tools if you're using windowsthen that might be rufus which is a goodtool for creating usb boot media soi'm going to press 1 to boot multi modethat's kind of the default that itselects if you just let it installwhat it will now do is it will load thelive cd intoram that's why it needs 4 gig of ram asa minimum specificationbecause the whole live cd basicallyloads into ram and that's what makes alive cdrun so quickly and that's quite that'squite normal forbsd sowe'll just wait for this to load intoramand that shouldn't take too longokay you just caught there thatuh it's on freebsd stable 13.1 andthat's the reason why we are installingand running thisis uh because of that so here we arethis is a bsdinstaller via a live cd just like youwould get on linuxand you are presented with a desktop sothat's really nice now obviouslyif you've tried bsd before then youmight be used totext-based installers and it may be alittle bitnot confusing but maybe a little bitthreatening if you're not used totext-based installers or might feel abit old-school so it's really nice thatgoes bsd put together this live cd thatyou can boot straight into and you get agraphical installer now as i said uh andthis is the reason why we're doing thisisthis is based on the latest version ofbsd 13.1 so that's that's brilliant sowe're going to click on install ghostbsdand select englishand then if we just scroll downi never know whyon this installer why when you selectenglish it immediately dumps you intoanother language but that's perhapssomething to look at in the future uhenglish uk is i'm based in the ukand uh again if i click on europe andthen scroll down here and londonall right i'm going to do a full diskconfiguration uh now at the moment umi'm running this on a vm machine butwhat i'm gonna do is once i've shown youthis installer and we have it up andrunning then i'm gonna jump across tothe physical machine and we're gonnalook at uh ghost bsdrunning on anormal regular laptop just like wenormally do so this is literally just toshow you the installer so there we arethere's the vbox hard drive that i'veset upand we click nextit's going to say freebsd bias loaderonly so just to be aware of this andif you have a previous version ofghostbsd there were some issues with thepreviously released version that has nowbeen patched so make sure that you ifyou're going to try this that youdownload the latest version of ghostbsdotherwise you may run intoproblems whenyoutry to install onto a hard drive butthey've all been sorted now so just makesure that you've downloaded the latestiso from guys bsd i'm gonna put stickychap in thereand we're gonna put a really super weakpassword because this is just uh just todemonstrate how easy the installer isand installation in progressso the installation takes some time anduhbut not not overly longbasically this is just installingeverything you need for ghost bsd andhopefully this will land us in a desktopenvironment after a reboot so what we'lldo is we'll fast forward the videoand uh basically uhthatshould leave us when the where theinstallation is complete but hopefullyyou can seehow easy it is to install guys psd andhow quick it is as well[Music]great soinstallation is complete as you can seeandit was very easy very verystraightforward soso we're going to restart and what we'lldo is i'll jump across tothe other machine andwe'll take a look at ghost psdrunning on actual hardwareso here we are this is the very latestversion of ghost bsd220618 and let's just take a look to seeexactly what we have installed so if welaunch a mate or mate system monitor andwe take a look at system we can see yeahit's 2206.18and the really exciting bit is that thisis running on a brand new kernel whichis freebsd13.1 stablethat's also just been released and ireviewed that in uh just a few weeks agoand noted that it was very very vast inchallenging also the a lot of the linuxdistros for speedwe are still running the same mate ormate versionwhich is 1.26 as my previous review umobviously this is still release 22 ofguys psd but it is a significant releasesimply because of the change in kernelwill mean thata lot more hardware is supported out ofthe box and indeed it is my camera wasdetected first timethe network card has been detectedeverything that i've plugged in so farhas been detected and what we'll do inthis reviewi'll show you a little bit andcustomizing themate or multi desktop and also how toget software applications but we'll alsotest it with an external monitor andcheck to see that that all works as wellsoit'll be a fairly thorough test in termsof this releasei'm running this on a i5 6200 cpu with2.3 gigahertzit's another hp laptop so very verysimilar to the spec that i tested onbefore that hp laptophas now been given awaybut this laptop is very very similarspecification other than it's at aslight disadvantage in that it has 12gig of ram and the last one had 16 gigof ram both of those laptops had ssds inas does this sovery very similar in terms of tests soit'll be interesting to see how thisfares given the review i did previouslyif i click on resourcesyou can see again thatthe cpu is running really really nicelythe fans aren't kicking in on the laptopat all it's running about 20and yet i am recording this at 1080peven though the screen itself is1366x768my camera is 1080pthecpus are hardly taxed at alland what's really impressive as well isthat all of this is running in around1.1 gig of ram as well sowe have12 gig of ram obviously and we there'salso a swap partition as well of 2.3 gigthat's not being used at all soin terms of resource it's running reallywell so what i'll do is i'll justleave this running over hereso what we'll do now is we will installsome software so if i go to system go toadministration and go to softwarestationandjust type in my password there nowpreviously in my last review softwarestation needed a little tinkering within the background because therepositories were so slow i needed tochange the source of repositories whereit basically pulls the softwareinformation from i needed to change thelocation of that to france but as youcan seenow they seem to have corrected that andit just works out of the box as i'vesaid i haven't changed anything in thebackgroundand i haven't changed the repositorylocations if i wanted to further improvethings i could do thatbut as it stands it's actuallyfairly okay fairly fairly fastpackages available 31812 so there are plenty ofsoft plenty of software out there to tryand again it's nicely categorized on theleft there intodifferent types of applicationsso we're going to install some softwareas always i will try and build thisvideo using the laptopand i'm pleased to say uh the search aswell seems to have improved it was alittle buggy before when i startedtyping it would search straight awaythere seems to be a slight delay nowwhen you type so that you are able totype the whole word withoutit's going off to search and thendelaying the whole thing so i'm going toinstall caden live and let's apply thatthere's going to be some extra softwarechanges it's going to need to installsome pluginsconfirm thatalso what was really nicei had to install obs on here to recordthis video and what was really nicein the software station is that you canalso at the same time install lots ofobs pluginsas well so that was really cool that icould select those plugins things likefilters noise filters things like that icould select those plugins and installthat all at the same time throughsoftware stationso actually that that works really wellso kaden live is now installing that'sfetching all of that and you can seeit's doing thatfairly rapidly it's not the in terms ofwhere it's getting it from i would saythat it's probably getting it from alocation that isn't optimized but i'mtrying this out of the box andyou know out of the box it's fairly okayin terms ofusage so i'm just going to minimize thatwhilst that's installingas you can see even though i'm runningsoftware station i'm installing softwarememory usage is still really really lowand as is cpu usage so the system isreally holding up very wellbecause we are using the same version ofmate or mate everything within herelooks pretty much the same as beforeandit's all fairly rapidyou don't get some now previews but youcanchange that if you want to let me justgo to preferencesdisplayuh preview sorry preview here we go showthumbnails local files only textpreview local files only only for filessmaller than 10 so i'll just change thatto say100 megand close that or reload this and see ifthat makes any difference okay no stillno thumbnails herelet me just double checkthat i've set that properlypreviewjustchange that to alwaysandnumber of items yeah closeand refreshokaystill no thumbnails so that that'sinteresting umi'm not sure maybe if that maybe that'sbecause it's if i pop that in videosreload thatno still no thumbnails so it does appearthat thumbnailsisn't working on here um it was workingin the previous release so i'm not surewhatwhat'swhat that is what the reason that is butit doesn't stop the system from workingbutyeah it would be nice if thumbnails wastheresosoftware station is still installingthat still going off to fetch thepackages so clearly in software stationthere are still optimizations that couldbe made obviously i'm based inthe ukandi think uh thethis the bulk of the development on goesbsd is donein canadaand so it's kind ofprobably optimized for the canada usmarketif i just uh tax things a little bit andwe'll launch firefox as wellandso we should start to see the cpu andindeed it does the cpus are starting toget taxed a little bit but stilland the ram as well is now gone up tothirteen point three percent usagebut still you know i'm i'm now runningsoftware station installing softwarei've got obs running recording this i'venow got firefox running the system isholding up really welland if i just go to bbcyou can see everything is still reallysnappyand it's impressive it really isimpressive that you know i'm doing allof this i've got software installingi've gotuh obs recording andi'm still able to browse the internetand you know launch a few tabs as wellyou knowi'll go to youtube maybe watcha youtube as well that all works fineumyeah it it all is just working reallywell so multiple tabs open now i'mstarting to approachuh 50if i'm in firefoxandif i just go toreddit as wellokay so as i do things in eachindividualtab you can see that the cpus there arestarting to get taxedbutthis is really really quite stable for amachine that isa middling specmachinebut um yeah given that i'm installingall this software in the backgroundsometimes when you're installingsoftware you kind of have to wait forthings tofinish butyeah it's it's working quite well what iwould say about software station isinstalling caden live at the moment isis taking far too long soobs was really quick to installincluding its plugins however uh cadenlive istaking some time so i'm wonderingis there some more optimizations thatneed to be done on the repositories andthat's really easily done i showed howthat would could be done on the lastvideo soi'll just let that keep installing atthe moment so so far it's quitequite impressive what i'm going to donow is just demonstrate theplank or the dock so if i click on plankthere we go we get a nice modern lookingdock thing at the bottom but of courseyou've still got your panel down hereand that's quite easy to remove you justclick on delete this paneldelete and there we are so now we have amuch more mac-esque typelook to things andsome peoplemight prefer that there is actually a anxfceedition of this as well which is thecommunity edition that is available aswell on the latest release which is22.0618.i'm going to pause the video therewhilst all this stuff is running and i'mgoing to try it now or with an externalmonitorconnected and we're going to see if thatworks as well so bear with me i'm goingto be setting things upwith the monitor get that attached andplugged in andwe'll just transition once i've got itall set up back againwe now have the external monitor pluggedin and it works okay what i will say wasthat it was a little glitchyuh when i first plugged it in thebecause this is a now a 1080p monitorand my laptop screen is1366it kind of glitched out a little bit thelaptop screen was fine but the monitorscreen was a little all over the placeand i had to rebootbut i'm pleased to say now havingrebooted and set the monitor to1920x1080everything works okaywhat i will say is that the icons fromthe laptop screen that are on thedesktop haven't moved across even thoughi've made thisuhasus monitor the primary displaybutthat's that's not too badeverything else seems to be working okayi can move from screen to screen okayand that that all works fineso yeah so we now havethe uhghost bsd running with uha 1080p monitor external monitor pluggedin i've got my logitech c920 cameraplugged in it's all detected fineandyeah it's working really really wellso if we do we can see on the dock herewe have evolution as the default mailclient rhythm box is the default musicplayer vlcdefault media player i haveis the image viewer and then we've gotanother evolution icon here as well so alittle bit of duplication there andgetting rid of that should be as easy asthat so you justright click the iconand click on keep in dockuntick it to remove it but what's niceis you do have when you right click onthings like evolution you doget a number of options that are linkedto evolution such as compose a messageand can't get to your contacts calendarand so on so that's that's really nicethat that's kind of the functionality isbuilt in on the plank dock down hereso now we've got something that'sstarting to look pretty good and youknow it's quite easy to change thedesktop background as wellso you've got things like this which isa slideshow of the cosmosand that will change as welluhautomatically so there we go sothat all looks fineand then you got some other backgroundsas wellthey like their light lightning here onghost bhdum so um what i will do actually is ithink i'll just this time i'll change itto the bridge okay so hopefully you havebeen able to see that very very quicklywith very little effort we've now got toa place with the ghost bsd desktop thatit looks like most other modern desktopenvironmentsand that's quite quite nice and you cango even further than that underpreferences and look and feel if you gointo station tweakinterface you can change what's calledthe panel layouts and that will changehowthe basically the panel behaves how thepanel looks and there are lots ofdifferent looks that you can selectso you can go even further if you wantto i'm keeping it to the default mate ormate layout for the time beingwhat i will say as well is that if youwant planck to launch every time yourestart your desktop you will need toadd it into startup applicationsand that's what i've done here so understartup applicationsyou can see i've added this customcustomize additional startup program ifi click on editthat is all there is to it just give ita name the command is simply planck savethat and it will automatically startplanck on on your startupoverall ghost bsd is is super quick it'ssuper quick to start on this i5 with 12gig of ramvery very quick i mean it starts withina few secondsandapplications launch again really quitequickly as well so if i launched firefoxthere we go sothat launches really quickly as well onthis i5and as you saw earlier the systemresources are very verysmall it doesn't it's really really goodon system resourcesas you can see at the momentso ghost bsd2206 18 running on the free bsd13.1 stable kerneli think it's fantastic it's a fantasticentry point if you want to use bsdor give bsd a tryoutit works really really well it's veryfamiliar if you've installed linuxbefore or gone through any of the linuxinstallers it's very familiar in thatrespect it's like installing any otherlinux distro it's as easy as thatandto get people into bsd and to startusing bsd it's a fantastic starter for10to just start to get into how bsdworksand bsd what does it offer it offerssuper stabilityit's it's oneit's one community that develops theoperating system and it is a operatingsystem so everything in it is developedby one entity and that's one of thethings that offers a lot of benefit tostabilityuh within the free bsd environmentand bsd in generalso if you want something that is superstable that isn't going to break on thenext software update then ghostbsdpotentially is the operating system foryou and it is as easy to install as anyother linux distribution is to installif not in some ways quicker as well thana lot of linux installations that comewith a lot of software bundled in withthis one you get the basics admittedlybut it's very easy to go into thesoftware centersorry the software station and choose anapplication to installso would i recommend this absolutely ifyou want to get into bsd this is a greatstarterin terms of ratingi've got to say there are a few smallbugs to iron out in terms of like theinstallation i wasn't keen on the fact ihad to select country several timesbeforei got to the point where i could uhcarry on the installation i think thereare too many steps in there but that isso small it's so insignificant it's nota show stopper at alli would say ghostbsd is a four out offive for meit's a brilliant distribution if youwant to try bsd definitely give this onea goanyway that's kind of the end of myreview of uh or update review on
