in this video we'll be looking at ghostBSD you can't do it justice in thelength of the video that we've got butI'll give it a quick introduction andbesides I've covered it before in thepast so if you really want a morecomplete picture have a look at themprevious videosbut we're looking at a new featurethat's been introducedand we'll be looking atjust how polished it is and it really ispolished and it's a very professionallooking OSI'll make the video[Music]in the world of desktop Linuxthings are becoming easier over the lastfew years you get beautiful desktopslike this running on Linux Mint which isreally the epitome of ease of use but dowe have something similar in the FreeBSDworld yes we do we have ghost BSD[Music]just for those who wish to know the testmachine I'm running this on is an IntelCore 2 Duoe8400 running out three gigahertz andit's an Optiplex 760. it has an Nvidia710 card in and is pretty robust exceptfor when the system battery is lowI'll just press F1right here we are at the usual I sayusual but the ghost BSD boot screenwe'll just let it count down and it willgo through its usual boot routine nowthis is like loading the system orcopying the system into RAM using a swapbaseuhmemory systemit's one of the reasons why thedevelopers removed LibreOffice and a fewother things so it could fit into a fourgigabyte machineit's just finding the networkand it automatically installs and setsup the Nvidia driver which is very nicealso detects whether using virtualbox orinstalling to real Hardwareand I thinkthere we go that was nice that was easyright so yes for those who are familiarwith ghost based day of course and matewill find the usual things in all theusual placesI got your applications places systemand then your desktop icons with yourinstall ghostbust there the usual thingsthat you'll find in a Mate system or aghost BSD system is you know you've gotyour character map archive managercalculators front viewers Etcandyeah and I take screenshot which isuseful addition I like thatyou've got graphics I have mate matecolor selection and Shotwellyour internet you've got Firefox andtransmissionoffice you've got atrial Evolution andmate dictionary programming got glaredsound division Got Rhythm box sound andVLC and the system we've got casual logfile viewer some terminals powerstatistics and fish at the endand you've got the places you gotnetworks and home and desktop Etcand for system we have the usualpreferences admin control center helpEtc and we'll have a look at the controlcenter which to meis uh one of the most important parts ofglass PSD because everything is donethereand we're noticing there's a new editioncalled backup stationalong the side of software station andupdate stationI love the collection of stationutilities so there's everything that youcan uh alter in the system you will findit herestation tweak is interesting because Ireally thought it might have beenrenamed called uh tweak station to goalong with the stationtools but yeah the backup station is aboot environment manager and somethingwhich you can do on the command line butthey've introduced it into a smallgraphical tool which is uh veryinteresting we'll proceed to install andthe installation procedure is as italways has been on course PSD a veryeasy affairso you choose the language that you wantand one thing about ghostbusty which Ireally enjoy is that you can choosealmost every single language you couldwish for we're going to go for Englishkeyboard layouts can be English UKand the keyboard model well we'll justleave it as default we're going to setit to uh time zone for you if we canfind it Europe andthere we go Londonuh full disk configuration just thedefault we're going to select the harddrive which is a spinning old-fashionedone pull namewell I'm just going to leave it a z rootuh leave that ticked single disk ofcourse although you could change it tosuit your needs if you wish I'm going toleave swap size as default and I thinkwe can click nextwe're going to click next for thisbecause it's the only operating systemon the computer and it's FreeBSD biosloader onlytype in an admin password or a rootpassword and it does tell you whetherit's super weak or okay and whether theymatch and in fact if the dot match it'lltell youreal name uh of course Robo noogieautomatically fills out the host nameit's always going to put test leave thatand put in a very simple password andagain if you get it wrong it will tellyou so we'll just put the N1 back againand click install and we'll see whathappens now I'm going to fast forwardthisfrom start to finishone thing about ghost BST install isreally quick because it's installingfrom memory it's not copying straightover from diskit's quite speedyit's roughly in about five minutes to dosoandfive minutes and 47 seconds which is notbad and a lot quicker than some LinuxdistributionsrightI'll just uh restart I'll shut down okayI'll just shut down old-fashioned wayand then remove the USB stickand when we reboot back up we'll have alook at the system[Music]okay here we arejust reboot it back up I'm just going tolog in with the password we set earlierand we should hopefullybut um there we goa nice clean ghost BSD desktopit's detected the CD zero because I'vegot aa Lauren Hardy DVD in the drive which ispretty cool so it does automaticallydetect thatand everything looks as it should do ofcourse it would doand we're gonna have a look at thecontrol center againand let's say one of the additions whichI've noticed is backup station which islike I say a graphical version of thebead Mr be CTL tool that you can get onthe command line which is a bootenvironment controland I'm just going to click up passwordinright there we go and it tells you thatwe're we're already booting from thedefaultactive uh boot environment because we'vejust installedand the idea is if you make any changesthen you create a new snapshotdo your changes if the change did notwork you just reboot back into the oldone and you system will be back tonormal minus the changesso I'll have a look at the command lineso you might be used to the command lineversionwhich would be pseudob-e-c-t-l list and it will support thepassword of courseand there we go so he's telling youexactly the same thing so this thislittle tool doesn't do anything whichthat won't do on the command line butfor those who perhaps don't like thecommand linethis is a a nice addition I thinkit tells you exactly the sameinformationhow big it is when it was created Etcso you can create a boot environmentbackupand we're going to call it test test oneokayandif you go down to the command line thenwe canlist the archived or createdenvironments and there we go it's listedso we just created it and it lists it aswe'd expect and vice versa if youcreated one in the command line it wouldlist it in the graphical toolsoyou can rename itcalled test EST or test testwow that's pretty easyand you can delete it which was a bittoo easy I think I think are you surewould be nice just to make sure youdon't make a mistake and delete thewrong one so that's maybe something thatneeds to be looked atandlike I said the idea is youcreate a snapshot before you import analteration to the system or you updateand it goes wrongso like for instance we'd create one andthen we'd update using the updatestation if there are any updatesavailable of course there probably won'tbe because it's a newly installed systemand it's a snapshot well it's the latestdevelopers versionupdate State oh there we go updatestationwhich is where you install all thesesoftware that you might need so youmight want to install something perhapsit doesn't work and it screws the systemup maybethen you can roll backit might be this system but it can takea while for you to install things viathe package manager butyou know we'll keep an eye on that soyou create your environmentuh as per user like say for instancepre-update we call this one pre-updatethen you do the update if everythinggoes sweet then brilliant you can deletethat if everything doesn't go sweet andthere's a terrible Calamity if you oh nowhat have I done you just activate thebackup reboot into that backupand you'll be back to normal which ispretty sweet and it has saved my bacon afew timesright let's get some things installedwe're going to install LibreOfficeum that's one of the things I missedfrom the default install of gospel Iunderstand why they removed it but youknow it's it's quite trivial just toreinstall it but it would have been nicefor it to be thereuh of course it's a sizable package witha few dependencies he says so I'm gonnaget that installed and while that'sinstalling it will take a whilewe'll have a look aroundthe rest of the system all the rest ofthe control panelso you go print settings and using cupsof courseI would set it here I'm not going to dothat now but if I was setting up systemawardif you like displays if you want tochange your monitor settingsyou've got keyboard layout if you wishto change that create a layout so youcan change whichever country you canaccessibility mouse keysand typing breakkeyboard shortcuts essential for thethe non-mouse users all those perhapsnot used to thatchange the mouse itself if you want tomake it easier faster or the movementspeedpower management of course if you wantto uhsave a little bit energy which I thinkwe all do these daysit's pretty comprehensive I like thistime and date manager there's a slighterror though let's see if we canuh okay oh it pops up anywayso you can uh ntp sync and set thepreferences manually if you wishNetwork proxy uh which I think I mightset laterhopefully that pops up there it isand you've got aproxy that you want to Tunnel theinformation through then you can do itthereappearanceand hopefully it pops upthere we goand yeah there's a usual small selectionof uh themes in ghost PSD and some morewould be nice somaybe someone's listening but the onesthat you've got are very classy anywayuh vmixbackgrounds andeverything's running a bit slow becauseI think it's installed in LibreOffice inthe background so things don't usuallygo this slowthe backgrounds have been updatedrecently which is pretty nice there'ssome good selections and I like this onebecause it's close to Halloweenand it's our lightning one so it's a bitspookybut the backgrounds are very Tastefullydone I think not garish and quiteartisticfonts uh the usual selection will justselect for LCDsand I'll change the size of some ofthese because uhI can't read them when they're so smallthere we goI might do the rest we'll seehow far we got to go uh oh almost doneactuallylike I say it might be my internet or itmight be the uh I think it's done yeahit's done or it might be the serverswhich you downloaded from but the speedcan be sometimes an issueand there's labor officeand we all know LibreOffice and I thinkhopefully I think7.4.1.2 is the latest version as of thetime of this videoso FreeBSD and ghostbusty they theydon't like for the latest uhapplicationsoh yeah that's really nice we allknow LibreOfficethere we goit's very niceI like Libra office mind your like openOffice I like mostly often uh the officesuites that you could get and you stillcan getnot so keen on online ones I like uh Ilike the office applications to beseparate if I can typeI don't like him to be online it feelslike if he ain't that goes down then youcan't use it so hello and the tinylittle oh there we goand we won't serve upso yes very niceumeverything's easy so far there's uhinterface if you want to change thebonds Etcyep tweaker settings if you wishjust gonna go and change each one ofthese to 11 soumI know I'm zoomed in at the momenteverything's big but when you zoom youknow when you actually pan down it's uhit can be difficult to read on thismonitoractually main menu of course if you wantto alter thatit's uhpretty busy as it is so if you want todelete things I'll change things aroundyou can donotification settingswhich I usually don't bother changingbut some people might like to change howit looks screen saver of course isself-explanatoryyou do get the basics what would be niceis if you got a ghost BSD screen serverwith a little ghost flying around Iwouldn't know how you create that sawbut it would be pretty cooland station tweak of coursehola maybe call it tweak station on thesame if you want to change aspect ofyour default screen so if you want toget rid of your icons or change yourmenus Etcchanger compositingI'll don't use compositing hmmyeah I don't know leave it and leave itoh use the uhI think to make things run a bit quickerthere we go so yes uh alter Windowswhichagain lets you change the compositingaspectsabout me which if you were unsure of WhoYou Areyou can change your password therethat's actually pretty cool assistiveTechnologieswhich is usually a very under underrateduh part of the desktop you know tweakingprocessBehavior file management how it looks incolumns previews and media playbackEtcpreferred applicationsuh Firefox at the top Evolution mailwhich I might change laterand instant message if there's oneinstalled and startup which againyou know if you want things running inthe backgroundthat's the place to change itI do like the control center in ghostPSD it's uhit's pretty conscious it's reallycleanly laid outright let's what can we do now uh we'llhave a look for browsers we've gotFirefox installed but we'll see whatother browsers are availablesometimes you have to wait for it tocatch up when you do keywords there wego oh iridium browser oh it's back againis it coolI got iridiumwell we'll have that oneuh what other ones have we got uh ohthere's a auto browserandcute browser because I say yeah cuteuh surf browser something I use on riskoff sometimesand TV browser although technically nota browser but it lets you browse TVwe'll see what that's like and you'vegot a web browser at the bottom which Ithink just pulls in uhthat one pulls in we'll leave thatright so we'll installhopefully it won't take too longmaybe those are fast forwardand while that's doing that we'll have alook at uh show you the version offreebsds running FreeBSD 13.1 stablewhich is uh I consider it to be rollingrelease version of the lateststable branchhmm not badthinking about ghost BSD is it does giveyou the latest uh FreeBSD stable that'sversion that's availableno h top of course and we'll have a lookat topand yeah it's quite conservative it'smemory use it's not too baduh yeah currentlythere's quite a few things running inthe backgroundyeah not badit's running ZFS so uh there's a littlebit of overhead but it's not too bad atallrightwe'll wait for some Vision system toolswhat can we have a look at uh I willlook at the Mate system monitoragain gives you a more concise uhfeel what's going onmaybe used to looking at this it's like1.3 1.6 gigabytesand the activity of all four coresgood that's mego to the systemand we're on 22.10.12mrta1.26.0 there's the processors resourcesand the file system usedyes is it not downloaded yet good griefI'm going to fast forward this bittaking too longwell it's still not finished even thoughI fast ordered a little bit but we'llhave a look at the desktop you got yourcalendar your internet of the courseyour volume which is uhnot bad I like that it works quite wellwell straight out of the box of theaudio on ghost PST by the wayuh right clicking you can create foldercreate launcher create documentuh open Terminal organize desktop byname keep aligned lock icons positionedpaste if you copy something and changebackground oh it's finishedcool let's have a look so there's thebrowsers now there's iridiumiridium browser really is uh it's it'ssomething I maybe should use a littlebit more it's more like a um a privacyorientated version of Chrome or chromiumit's not Google Chrome of course but thefree browser chromiumand yeah there's the interface it'ssound enablingso yeah I think it disappeared a whileback I umI'm not sure what happened to itbut it's here on uh Ghostbuster which itmeans it must be their own FreeBSDrepository I haven't checkedand there's version uh20 22.04yeahiridium I think some people are going tobe very happy with that actuallyyou got uh oh let's have a look at Autobrowser which I've not used in a longtime and surf we'll look at Surfah wellyeahnot a lot going on theream I getting confused I'm thinkingsurface no surf yeahoh wellwe'll just close that one downand we've got uh Auto browserhopefully this worksumyeah there is just a little bit slowthere's Auto browser opening in fullscreenfull pagesand yeah very niceand like I said there's a lot ofsoftware available for gross psds a lotof emulators so if you're into RetroGaming which I know a lot of people areI certainly am I like a bit of retrogamingand you could make a nice little gamingsystem with an old PC on here and ifyou've had enough of playing and youwant to watch some media have a look forsomething which sounds like Geordie butI'm not going to say the real namebecause YouTube doesn't like it but youcan see how screen what it isand it pulls in quite a few uhdependencies I'm not going to installthis one maybe for another day butYouTube really doesn't like it when I uhI cover this particular piece ofsoftware called Jordydon't know why because there's nonefariousum association with it but he stilldoesn't like itandyeah laws of Dash utilities a lot ofthese I've correctlyso yes that works tooum so the recognition and mounting ofexternal storage devices don't seem tobe a problem on ghostbust which ispretty goodthe icon that you can see in the topright hand corner uh looks like a bluesquare roofheartbeat pulls through it is the TVbrowser whichI couldn't get to work it starts abovecourse but then it gets stuck on uhsearching for channels so there might besomething with my firewall that'sblocking thatbut yeah it's uh so the fact that youcan see on the desktop I see these arealso it recognizes amounts a DVD in thiscase like say it's Lauren Hardy whenalso the bottom one it recognizes USBstick plugged in so that's pretty cool Ilike that it's quite important for a lotof people for things to be automaticallymounted and I can understand that in adesktop systemso what do you think about this golf PSTwell ghost BSD is as it always is it's afantastic user-friendly introduction andversion of FreeBSD it's its own thing ofcourse now we've got a few extra thingslike backup station and all these othercustom little tools that they have andit makes ghost BSD unique it is FreeBSDfor all in intents and purposes butbecause it's its own thing and it'sdoing its own thing and it's desktoporiented I think it's a fantastic gatewhere two freebst you have a wonderfuluh Dev a set of devs the main one beingEric and who he loves his project with apassion and of course why wouldn't heand all the community that's aroundghostbusty also love it too and I loveit I've loved it for a long time youknow you recognize ghostbusty for whatit isum and it achieves its goals you can'tget better than that hello Linux doeshave some flashy desktops it has somewonderful uh desktop orientated distrosof course it does but they also have amuch bigger uh pool of talent to choosefrom if you want for for one of a betterphrase in 3bsd course PSD and all theothers like a law system and Ravin OSthey have a much smaller set of peopleto help and so for them the taskis a lot harder it's not less enjoyableand the results are no less impressivebut it it can take longer so for any forevery step that these freebst basedum derivatives whatever they achieve Ithink is to be applauded a lot morebecause it's it's done withmore dedicationless dedication in the freebies in theLinux world but it's doing morededication knowing that the the odds areperhaps stacked more against you and thethe work is perhaps a lot harder so ifghostbust has achieved all this I thinkit's to be highly applaudedit really is it's a very slick wellpresented very professional OS and it'ssomething that could be put on a wholeseries of desktops say for instance in aclass in schoolon suitable laptops because there'salways a little bit with FreeBSD andlaptops it can be a little bit a littlebit iffy sometimes if you're getting thelatest Wi-Fi to work etc or some hybridgraphics cards Etc but if you find agood selection of Hardware to put it onI have a desktop or laptop you wouldhave a very capable environment an Ecosystem if you wish I enjoy ghost PST Ithink ghost PST is a very polishedproduct and it's something which I thinkthat newcomers to FreeBSD well you couldjump in of course both feet into theFreeBSD world and learn from there youknow I I did thator you could perhaps ease yourself intoit by using ghostbust use that for awhile get used to the syntax get used tothe command line and then perhaps youcould change over or stay we've gotspace d because either way you're in goyou're in FreeBSDso yes it's brillianthead on over to the ghost BST websitecheck out the message forums check outthe telegram Channel which I've done avideo on thatand introduce yourself ask somequestions there's a whole bunch of verysmart people in there that will answerthe questions if
