<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?><transcript><text start="1.12" dur="5.28">Hi all and welcome back to the channel um
slight change of pace today not going to </text><text start="6.4" dur="3.6">do a technical one um so what
I thought I’d do was just list </text><text start="10.88" dur="7.12">the five reasons that I would use FreeBSD over
another operating system like uh windows or </text><text start="19.12" dur="6.4">Linux or macOS I think that's the
main three so the first one to me </text><text start="27.28" dur="5.92">is that the FreeBSD handbook is absolutely
amazing if you've had ever had a look at it, </text><text start="33.2" dur="6.24">it is just completely phenomenal check
it out it's well worth read it's massive </text><text start="40" dur="5.76">some parts need updating admittedly
but overall great place to start </text><text start="46.56" dur="4.8">it's just it's brilliant it's all encompassing
it goes through all the details that you need </text><text start="51.36" dur="9.6">to look at so creating users um initial install
adding disks stuff that I’ve covered in my videos </text><text start="62.4" dur="10">plus a lot more including routing and networking
firewalling you name it it's probably there and </text><text start="73.36" dur="8.16">it is just a phenomenal resource well worth taking
a look as I say it's well worth reading through um </text><text start="82.96" dur="6.4">at least to the, the parts that you need to
have a look at number two and quite a big one </text><text start="90.96" dur="2.72">I know this can be a problem
with other operating systems that </text><text start="95.2" dur="8">to get decent genuine support you will need to
pay for it FreeBSD’s support from the community is </text><text start="104.32" dur="8.56">amazing a few years back um when I was maintaining
some ports for FreeBSD the amount of support and </text><text start="112.88" dur="8.8">encouragement that I got from the FreeBSD ports
committers was again it genuinely was amazing um</text><text start="123.76" dur="6.56">going along with the handbook and the support
from the FreeBSD community on the forums </text><text start="131.12" dur="5.52">and mailing lists you can get help
at almost any time you need it </text><text start="137.76" dur="7.52">it's just it's an all-encompassing community
it really is they look out for each other um</text><text start="147.36" dur="8.24">and it just it's quite amazing um number three
is the ports tree and packages now FreeBSD </text><text start="155.6" dur="9.76">has some 38 480 odd pieces of software in its
ports tree um the ports tree is really good </text><text start="165.36" dur="4.48">to check out because it allows you to add
custom options when compiling the software</text><text start="172" dur="5.92">whereas when using packages you're using the
defaults that somebody else has deemed correct </text><text start="178.56" dur="6.4">which is not always the case they usually
generally are a good set of defaults um but </text><text start="184.96" dur="4.48">oftentimes you'll find that you'll need to
recompile the software for your own specific </text><text start="189.44" dur="5.84">use which is why I prefer to use ports tree rather
than packages well actually what I’d like to do </text><text start="195.28" dur="8">is set up a portrait build system and set up
all the options that I need and install from </text><text start="203.28" dur="8">packages that way at least I know it's all set
up and optimized for my system I love that about </text><text start="211.28" dur="5.44">FreeBSD I don't think there's any other operating
system that offers that kind of functionality </text><text start="216.72" dur="11.36">it's just incredible I find that extremely
useful and I love FreeBSD for that um number four </text><text start="229.52" dur="7.28">number four is the network stack FreeBSD’s
network is synonymous with stability </text><text start="236.8" dur="7.76">and performance it runs on almost anything from
a bait bean can up to high-end servers it and it </text><text start="244.56" dur="6.16">just runs and runs and runs and the networking
stack is to give you an idea of how good it is </text><text start="251.44" dur="4.72">many operating systems out there have
actually taken that code base and used it </text><text start="256.16" dur="4.8">including macOS and certain parts
of the windows networking stacker </text><text start="260.96" dur="5.12">are based on FreeBSD’s network stack so that will
give you an idea of just how good the networking </text><text start="266.08" dur="7.28">stack is on FreeBSD I’ve never run into
a problem with networking on FreeBSD </text><text start="273.36" dur="8.48">ever apart from when once I had a network card
die on me um I’ve been using FreeBSD since version</text><text start="282.56" dur="13.28">4.8 4.7 and like I say never had a problem
with networking it's just a rock solid</text><text start="297.52" dur="3.92">the good thing about the networking
stack on FreeBSD is it's staying </text><text start="301.44" dur="4.24">current as well so if you've got
your 10 or 100 gig network cards </text><text start="306.88" dur="6.96">SFP plus SFP you name it you can throw
it in there and it will just run um </text><text start="315.76" dur="4.56">there's a reason why pfSense is built
on top of FreeBSD and I’m pretty sure </text><text start="321.04" dur="7.12">it's because of the network stack um
yeah it's just rock solid performance is </text><text start="328.16" dur="9.84">amazing and then number five it's a complete
operating system okay this is technically not </text><text start="338" dur="4.8">alone in that department there are many
operating systems out there that are you know </text><text start="343.36" dur="8.48">a complete operating system macOS Windows they're
complete operating systems um but I’m not gonna</text><text start="353.6" dur="5.84">you're right there dog he's having fun um
I’m not gonna get into a starting a flame war </text><text start="360.08" dur="7.84">um I’m not gonna mention the other os that is
not an operating system just a kernel we all </text><text start="367.92" dur="5.84">know which one it is and I don't want to get into
he said she said this is better that is better </text><text start="374.64" dur="4.4">I don't work with that principle I try
to use the tool that is right for the job </text><text start="379.04" dur="7.28">which is why my desktop is not FreeBSD for anybody
who was wondering my desktop is windows 11 purely </text><text start="386.32" dur="6.16">for convenience I’m not the only one that uses it
um my wife likes to use it if I was to put FreeBSD </text><text start="392.48" dur="6.24">on the desktop should probably have a bit of a
heart attack and wonder what was going on um so I </text><text start="398.72" dur="8.64">like to just keep windows as my desktop and I can
ssh in or vnc into a FreeBSD box if I need to and </text><text start="407.36" dur="7.2">that works great for me you know I get to use the
production tools that I like for these videos so </text><text start="414.56" dur="8.32">adobe premiere or Davinci resolve all
works great on windows 99 of the time </text><text start="424.72" dur="6.16">stability aside on adobe premiere but we won't
go into that um so yeah the FreeBSD complete </text><text start="430.88" dur="8.4">operating system unlike some of the others you can
just download the one iso turn it to a usb disk </text><text start="439.28" dur="4.96">and I should probably show you guys how to do
that one day um and then just put it into your </text><text start="444.24" dur="9.76">box boot from it install and it's job done um
there you go guys that that is my five reasons </text><text start="454" dur="8">for using FreeBSD and why it works so well for
me um you know obviously from your point of view </text><text start="462" dur="6.56">you may have different reasons and they are
perfectly as valid as mine you know everybody </text><text start="468.56" dur="4.16">has different reasons for different things and
that's great and that's what makes things so good </text><text start="473.6" dur="4.64">and to be honest with you we need all of the
operating systems in the world that we've got </text><text start="478.24" dur="5.28">because they each lead to developments on the
others you know they push each other along what </text><text start="483.52" dur="6.24">goes into one generally makes it into the others
in some form or another and it just drives on that </text><text start="491.52" dur="6.64">creativity so it drives on in innovation having
other operating systems around so we need that </text><text start="498.16" dur="2.8">you know I don't want to
see one operating system go </text><text start="501.84" dur="7.92">there are times when I’ve used Linux and I’ve
enjoyed using it I especially like mint and</text><text start="511.84" dur="3.12">kali Linux I enjoy both of
those for various reasons</text><text start="517.6" dur="7.28">I enjoy using windows and making sure it's up
to date I like playing with windows server and </text><text start="524.88" dur="7.6">active directory it's what I did in my job until I
left it recently so yeah I don't believe in using </text><text start="533.52" dur="6.48">one thing exclusively I don't think that's the
right way forward but again if that's how you </text><text start="540" dur="3.92">think that that's perfectly valid there's
no reason why you shouldn't do it that way </text><text start="543.92" dur="3.92">um if it works for you it works for you
don't let anybody tell you differently </text><text start="548.4" dur="7.76">um so there you go guys that that's my uh my
thoughts on why FreeBSD works for me specifically </text><text start="556.72" dur="6.32">um be interested to hear your thoughts and
comments on it so if you've got other ideas </text><text start="563.04" dur="6">please put them in the comments down below I
like reading them um and I try to answer them </text><text start="569.04" dur="7.2">all if I can um but yeah let us know if you've
got a preference on or why you like FreeBSD </text><text start="576.24" dur="6.16">more than other os is if that's the case very
interested to hear um if you found this useful </text><text start="582.96" dur="6.88">please give me a thumbs up and please subscribe
like the video and come back for more take care</text></transcript>
