hi all and welcome back to the channelum slight change of pace todaynot going to do a technical one um sowhat i thought i'd do was just listthe five reasons that i would usefreebsd over another operating systemlike uhwindows oror linux or mac osi think that's the main three sothe first oneto meis that the freebsd handbook isabsolutely amazing if you've had everhad a look at it it is justcompletely phenomenalcheck it out it's well worth read it'smassivesome parts need updating admittedlybut overallgreat place to startit's just it's brilliant it's allencompassing it goes throughall the details that you need to look atso creating usersuminitial installadding disksstuff that i've covered in my videosplus a lot moreincluding routing and networkingfirewallingyou name it it's probably thereandit it is just a phenomenal resource wellworth taking a lookas i say it's well worth reading throughumat least to the the parts that you needto have a look atnumber two and quite a big onei know this can be a problem with otheroperating systems thatto getdecent genuine supportyou will need to pay for it freebsd'ssupport from the community isamazing a few years back um when i wasmaintaining some ports for freebsdthe amount of support and encouragementthat i got from the freebsd portscommitters wasagain it genuinely was amazingumgoing along with the handbookand thethe support from the freebsd communityon the forums and and mailing listsyou can get help at almost any time youneed itit's justit's an all-encompassing community itreally isthey look out for each otherumand it just it's quite amazingum number three is the ports tree andpackagesnow freebsd has some 38 480 oddpieces of software in its ports treeumthe ports tree is really good to checkout because it allows you to add customoptions when compiling the softwarewhereaswhen using packages you're using thedefaults that somebody else has deemedcorrectwhich is not always the case theyusually generally are a good set ofdefaults umbut oftentimes you'll find that you'llneed to recompile the software for foryour own specific use whichis why i prefer to use portstreet ratherthan packages well actually what i'dlike to do is set up a portrait buildsystemand set upall the options that i need and installfrom packages that wayat least i know it's allset up and optimized for my systemi love that about freebsd i don't thinkthere's any other operating system thatoffers that kind of functionality it'sit's just incrediblei i find that extremely useful and i ilove freebsd for thatumnumber fournumber four is the network stackfreebsd's network issynonymous with stability andperformanceit runs on almost anything from a baitbean can up to high-end servers it andit just runs and runs and runs and thenetworking stack isto give you an idea of how good it ismany operating systems out there haveactually taken that code base and usedit includingmac os and certain parts of the windowsnetworking stacker are based onfreebsd's network stack so that willgive you an idea of just how good thenetworking stack is on freebsdi've never run into a problemwith networking on freebsd ever apartfrom when once i had a network card dieon meumi've been using freebsd since version4.8 4.7andlike i say never had a problem withnetworking it's just just arock solidthe good thing about the networkingstack on on freebsd is it's stayingcurrent as well so if you've gotyour 10 or 100 gig network cardssfp plussfps you name it you can throw it inthere and it will just runumthere's a reason whypsense is built on top of freebsd andi'm pretty sureit's because of the network stack umyeah it's just rock solid performance isamazingand then number fiveit's a complete operating systemokay this is technically notalone in that department there are manyoperating systems out there that areyou knowa complete operating systemmac os windows they're completeoperating systemsumbut i'm not gonnayou're right there doghe's having fun um i'm not gonna getinto astarting a flame warum i'm not gonna mentionthe other os that is not an operatingsystem just a kernel we all know whichone it isand i don't want to get into he said shesaid this is better that is betteri don't work with that principle i tryto use the tool that is right for thejob which is why my desktop is notfreebsd for anybody who was wonderingmy desktop is windows 11purely for convenience i'm not the onlyone that uses itummy wife likes to use it if i was to putfreebsd on the desktop should probablyhave a bit of a heart attack and wonderwhat was going on umso i like to to just keep windows as mydesktop and i can ssh in or vnc into afreebsd box if i need to and that worksgreat for me you know i get to use theproduction tools that i like for thesevideos so adobe premiere ordavinci resolveall works great on windows99 of the timestability aside on on adobe premiere butwe won't go into that um so yeah thefreebsd complete operating system unlikesome of the othersyou can just download the one isoturn it to a usb disk and i shouldprobably show you guys how to do thatone dayum and then just put it into your boxboot from it installand it's job doneumthere you go guys that that is my fivereasons for using freebsd and and why itworks so well for meum you know obviouslyfrom your point of view you may havedifferent reasons andthey are perfectly as valid as mine youknow everybody has different reasons fordifferent thingsand that's great and that's what makesthings so goodand to be honest with you we need all ofthe operating systems in the world thatwe've got because they each lead todevelopments on the othersyou know they push each other alongwhat goes into one generally makes itinto the others in some form or anotherand it just drives onthatcreativityso it drives on in innovation havingother operating systems around so weneed that you know i don't want to seeone operating system gothere are times when i've used linux andi've enjoyed using it i especially likemintandkali linux i enjoy both of those forvarious reasonsi enjoy using windows andmaking sure it's up to date i likeplaying with with windows server andactive directory it's what i did in myjob until i left it recentlyso yeah i don't believe in usingone thingexclusively i don't thinkthat's the right way forward but againif that's how you think that that'sperfectly valid there's no reason whyyou shouldn't do it that way um if itworks for you it works for you don't letanybody tell you differentlyumso there you go guys that that's my uhmy thoughts
