hello everybody and welcome back toanother video now in today's video we'regonna be doing a follow-up to a videothat I actually did back in December onthe IBM workplace shelf for Windows 3.1and if you guys haven't seen that videoI would highly recommend that you go andcheck it out up in the card so thatyou'll kind of be up to speed on whatthis program is and how it actually cameto be but to give you a tldr version ofthat video this was a piece of softwarethat was written by a group of IBMemployees or a single IBM employeethrough ibm's employee written softwareprogram and it was basically designed togive Windows 3.1 the os/2 workplaceshell interface so if I kind of scrubthrough this video here basically whatit does is it transforms Windows 3.1into looking like os/2 it kind of givesit a new theme it just kind of takesover the program manager and kind ofreplaces it with IBM's os/2 workplaceshell and today what we're gonna bedoing as suggested by some of you guyson this video here we're gonna be seeinghow Windows 10 handles IBM's os/2workplace shell that was written in the1990 so if we're gonna be seeing howthat works on Windows 10 here in 2020 sowe've got the piece of softwaredownloaded right here this is versionone point five point one and since thisis a 16-bit piece of software it'sobviously not going to work on Windows10 natively and it's going to throw outthat windows SmartScreen like errorwhere it says this app can run on yourPC and that is because this is a 16-bitpiece of software but that is not aproblem for us because we have ot vdm orwhine vdm which i did a whole video onthat'll be up in the cards as well whichbasically allows you to run 16-bitprograms on a 64-bit installation ofWindows so we're going to try to justdrag the setup file right here onto otvdm and check that out it actually comesup with the setup program and it's gotthis greetings window right here welcometo the workplace shell for Windows setupprogram this program will install theworkplace shell software onto yourcomputer so that is pretty awesome nowwe can obviously maximize this setupwindow right here and we're just goingto go through with the setup processhere we're going to go with a newinstall and we're going to install it toseeshe'll and press Continue and now it'sgoing to actually give us an errormessage saying it could not remove afile so we can just probably cancel hereno we don't want to exit setup so it'strying to remove this file here okaywell apparently just by hitting canceland clicking on uh do you want to cancelthe setup you know saying yes to that itactually just went on with the setup sonow it's saying what language do youwant to be installed we'll just go withus English and yeah we'll just let's gowith the custom installation so we cankind of modify these options so it'sgoing to ask you you know what featuresdo you want installed so we're gonna seehow it migrates the current desktop tothe workplace shell it this is gonna bean interesting seeing if it will replacethe task manager with window listsetting OS to color schemas the defaultcolor scheme that might work and settingthe workplace shell as the default shellnow this I'm fairly certain is not goingto work because Windows NT based systemsdo not use the same method of selectingthe default shell that windows 9x andWindows 16 based operating systems useso I don't really think that's going towork we're gonna choose it and hitcontinue and see what it actually doesso yep this is kind of what I thought soit's going to try to write to the inifile which is obviously non-existent inthis case because obviously Windows 10does not rely on the system dot ini fileit relies on the Windows registryinstead so hitting retry here isobviously not going to do anything sowe're just going to click on cancel andthis is exactly what it did before itsaid that setup is not yet complete doyou want to exit and if we say no itcomes back to this screen right here sowe say cancel and if we say yes now it'sactually gonna say setup failed in caseyou're having trouble with thisinstallation please refer to them greetme dot first file on the on the disk soif we hit OK okay now it actuallycandles out of the setup so before itdidn't do that basically what Oh TV DMdoes is it actually creates a mirror ofcertain files on your system or thatwould be on a 16-bit Windows operatingsystem so like this right here is the CDrive so this is that file that I wastrying to move before if we go intoWindows you've got things like wind inisystem the eyethings that the Installer is going totry to change but obviously you knowthings that Windows 10 does not reallyrely on because Windows 10 is obviouslyit's an NT based system it's going torely on the Windows registry to kind offigure out what to use is the defaultshell so we can try to run this againand maybe modify some of those optionsto see if it maybe by deselecting likedo you want to replace the task manageryou know if it will actually allow us toget through the setup process so we'regonna continue here we're gonna go witha new install we're going to install itthe CWP shell once again and now it'sactually skipped past the error messageit gave us before which was referring tothis file right here inside of the Cfolder this file right here where itwasn't able to move it before now it'sactually founded so we're going to gowith us English right here and we'regoing to go with the custom installationto modify these settings and let's saythat we don't want to replace taskmanager with the window list and wedon't want to set the workplace shell asthe default shell so this was the thingthat was trying to do before when it wastrying to modify the system dot ini fileto replace the task manager entry andthat's what it was failing on so bydeselecting that we may actually be ableto get through the installation so wewill still select a migrated currentdesktop to workplace shell and set OS tocolor scheme as the default color schemeand press Continue okay so now it'strying to open up a file named controldot ini which it actually cannot findbecause I don't think ot vdm has createdfor us there is not a control dot inifile so I wonder if we create one let'screate a text document I need to turn onfile extensions so we're going touncheck hide extensions for known filetypes so we are going to create controldot ini and get rid of the txt extensionso now we have a control that ini fileso we should be able to hit retry andnow it's able to oh you Wow check thatout so it's actually installing here sonow it's coming up with an error sayingfile copy operation failed incorrectnumber of bytes were in to disk sourcefile or destination just may becorrupted it's asking us to use checkdisk so the source is trying to pullfromto find the license dot txt file whichis in here it's trying to move it to CWP shell license dot txt so if we hit okwow if setup failed ok so so I wondersomething that we can probably do isjust copy the license dot txt file andpaste it in C WP shell and just paste itin here so these were some of the filesthat I was trying to actually copy overand for whatever reason it wasn't ableto copy license not txt so we're goingto try to run this again and see if weare successful in you know gettingattacks installed with that file inthere but you guys were able to see thatby unchecking those two options I wasable to bypass that error message andcontinue on with the setup so we'regonna try that same thing again so nowit's actually doing the exact same thingeven with the license dot txt file inthere it's still trying to copy it overwhich is going to actually cause the setup to fail alright so we do have anotherversion that we can try here we weretrying a version one point five one ofthe software right here we have version1.4 so we're gonna actually try this outto see if we any better results withthis so we're gonna open up Oh TV DM andwe're going to drag the setup executableon to ot v DM buddy XE and I have itlaunched with that and you can see thatit actually loads up and it shouldlaunch the setup here if everythingworks correctly so yep there we go sowe've actually got a bit of a themegoing on on the title bar that isinteresting is I haven't actuallychanged any settings but this is a colorthat the OS two shell actually uses sothat's actually very interesting sowe're gonna go ahead and press continueto you know go through the setup processwe're going to go with a new installonce again we're going to install it toC WP shell now I did actually move allof the 1.51 files out of this directoryso we can still install to the samedirectory so we will press continuewe're going to go with us English as thelanguage and we're gonna go once againwith a custom installation to modifythese settings and we're just gonnauncheck all of these I actually triedthis with 1.51 and it still did notinstall properly we're gonna see if byunchecking everythingif we can just hit continue and havethis install for us and check that outit is actually getting past that oh mygosh it actually workedso it actually got past that one it waslicensed not txt that the 1.51 installerwas having trouble with so now it saysyour workplace shell software has beenproperly installed please restartwindows to the new shell can take effectwell obviously that's not going tohappen we should just be able to go intothe C Drive go into a workplace shelland we should just be able to launch WPshell DXE obviously by using ot vdm sowe will just launch this with ot vdm andso now it actually gives us an errorsaying the profile WP shell dot ini ismissing or corrupted check that thatfile is in the windows directory sosince I was running that with ot vdm itdoes use the windows folder that'salready in the OT vdm folder as I waskind of explaining before ot vdm or winevdm basically creates a mirror of your CDrive and you know certain systemfolders that these 16-bit applicationswill like write files to so it is tryingto look for a ini file inside of thisfolder that is not here so we're goingto go into the windows folder and see ifwe can create a new text document and wewill call this WP shell dot ini and yeswe will change the extension so this isjust gonna be a blank ini file so we'llsee if it can open up with that so it'sstill going to say it's missing orcorrupted alright so let me just fillyou guys in very briefly on what I'mgoing to be attempting to do hereyou guys saw from that last clip thatthe WP shell dot ini file is our culpritthat is basically not allowing us to runthis piece of software and even aftercreating a blank file with the same namein the OT vdm windows folder it stilldid not allow us to run the via programso what I did is I actually went back tothe VM that I used in my original videoon this program and I actually copiedthe WP shell I and I fell from thatworking installation onto my hostcomputer and then into this VM so thisis the file right here now the thingthat kind of makes me wonder if this isgoing to work is let's actually editthis file and let me show youwhat it looks like yeah so you can seehere this does not look like yourtypical ini file like at all it honestlylooks like if you try to open up an exefile in Notepad it kind of has a verysimilar effectit looks very corrupted but this isexactly how it looked on a Windows 3.1 Iopen this up on the Windows 3.1 VM andit looked exactly like this so we'regoing to just try to copy this file intothis folder right here this is again theOT vedyam windows folder so we're goingto try to go back to the OT vdm masterfolder and then try to drag WP shell exeand run it with a TV DM and see if thisworks and oh my gosh it is actuallyworking check that out are you kiddingme it actually workedokay that is insane so here we are guyswe are now running the IBM os/2interface on windows 10 so let'sactually explore it a little bit so itopened up a ton of folders you guys sawit was even doing the animations so itdid not completely replace Explorer butagain it wasn't designed to do that butvery interestingly the icons on thedesktop still show up but I can'tactually interact with them you can seeI'm trying to click on and what Iactually right click check this how itcompletely takes over that the desktopand comes up with that same context menuthat it did in the Windows 3.1 video inthe original video oh but now you seewhat I actually closed out of that menuit actually does not show the iconsanymore so it has taken over the entiredesktop but the the windows taskbar andthe Start menu are still here so we canstill open that up just fine if you guyssaw the original video you'll know thatthere were icons that show it up on thedesktop when we ran this program it didtake over the program manager and itactually displayed icons on the desktopwhich is something that is not happeninghere and so for the folders it'sactually attempted to recreate oh yeahcheck that out it's actually attemptedto recreate the Windows 3.1 programgroups here so this is the accessoriesgroup what you see we have things likeright and paintbrush here but they'reobviously not going to open up becausethey don't exist in Windows 10 here butwe've got all of these like I wonder ifsoundrecorder yes with sound recorder doesn'tuse the same name there is a soundrecorder in Windows 10 but it's probablyjust not that same application namenotepad I guess notepad doesn't open upso that's interesting because notepad Iknow we still notepad dot exe it butthat doesn't open up through theshortcut so it looks like even theapplications that have the same exactexecutable name like notepad here do notopen up except for right maybe and yeahcheck that out you can see yeah itactually will open up right so that'sinteresting it'll open up right which isWordPad which still uses right a txt asthe executable name as like the filename but it doesn't open up notepadwhich has the same like notepad is stillnotepad not exe so it's not able to openthat but it's able to open WordPad youguys can probably also notice that thehourglass animation like the waitingcursor has been changed to the littlecomputer with the clock on it when Iopen that up here you can kind of seethat yeah that has completely taken overthe regular animation which in Windows10 is obviously the little spinning bluecircle but as for the cursor itself itis still the standard Windows 10 cursorso yeah that is interesting andbasically trying to recreate theapplication groups that it that it wouldhave in this folder in Windows 3.1 sogames does the exact same thing it hasshortcuts for both solitaire andminesweeper both of which are not inWindows 10 anymore so it's not going tobe able to open them up under thestartup folder it shows nothing in hereright now under applications here youcan see that yeah it's not the exactsame thing but ms-dos editor andMicrosoft QBasic I actually have iconsthat go with them but you still cannotactually launch the program because onceagain they are not in Windows 10 lastbut not least we have the main folderwhich is going to contain things likethe file manager which obviously is nothere anymore pretty much all this stuffis not here anymore we also have controlpanel here which looks to do the exactsame thing that it did with notepad eventhough you can still access controlpanel by typing control dot exe in torun or into command prompt it is sayingthat the file is not found so that'sinteresting how WordPad or write is theonly one out of all these that actuallyopen up so that is the main window wecan go ahead andout of that and yet check out theanimation that it does it's actuallypretty cool and you can kind of see thatit plays the animation and then itbasically delays the window closingbecause the window actually closes withthe standard closing animation thatWindows 10 so watch this if I doubleclick this to close it'll do theanimation and then once the animation isfinished the window will close just likeany other window does in Windows 10 sowe can close out of all this stuff hereso yeah accessories are not obviouslygonna be able to open anything up inthere but that's everything in here nowfor the system setup window down here atthe bottom right all of these basicallycorrespond to various control panelpanes and some of these are still inWindows 10 there is still a mouse optionin the control panel but it's stillgoing to come up with an error saying itcould not find the file and that'sprobably gonna be the case for all ofthese so device driver install countrysound font pallet and scheme pallet yeahit does all the exact same thing systemhere you can open this up and these areactually the settings that the workplaceshell itself actually allows you tomodify so it's things like do you wantto have a confirmation come up on folderdelete under window here you can changesome of the appearance things you candisable the animation if you want to nowagain right clicking on the desktop willopen up this context menu which alsoallows you to do things like shut downthe system we're gonna see if that stillworks in Windows 10 I have a feelingthat it might we can go to run here tojust get a you know standard run promptso let's see if we can open things likenotepadokay so notepad file I found let's tryto browse to see oh I think I know whyit's not able to find all those filesbecause they're not in the OT vdmwindows folder that's why because thisis all running under ot vdm yeah sothat's why it's not actually able toopen up all of those files like notepadand control panel because those filesare not in the OT vdm windows folder Iguess WordPad is no cuz WordPad isn't inhere eitherso I don't know what was going on therebut it's probably because like thisapplication basically right now thinksthat this folder is the Windows folderon the computer so if I type in CWindows Explorersee it's going to say that it can't findit even though we can go into thestandard windows folder here or not thisone but obviously and see windows andthere is an explorer exe executable inhere as there always is because thisapplication thinks that this Windowsfolder is the C / Windows folder so thatis why it's not able to find things likecontrol panel and notepad but it'sinteresting because inside of thiswindows folder there is no right eh seeand it's not a hidden file eitherbecause I have hidden files turned offso it's somehow able to figure out whereright is but it's not able to figure outwhere notepad is but also in here weobviously have you can like sort I conZiff there were any icons that were onthe desktop right now you can selectthings a system set up a loping up thissame window that we were just in beforeyou can lock up now which I don't thinkyeah that doesn't actually work solocking up does not actually do anythingand you can get help if you want to goto product information you can see rightthere workplace shelf for Windows 3.1release one point for copyright IBMcorporation 1994 to 1995 so yeah that iswhen this piece of software was releasedand settings up here will go to the likegeneral program settings these are allof the settings that the program willactually allow you to modify so we canchange things like the background if wewant to actually let's see if we canchange the color here let's go with thisone so that'll change the border but itwon't change the actual desktopbackground itself so you can changethings like under windows settings youcan change the lock-up settings if youwanted well if the lock of feature worksyou could choose if you wanted to haveit happen automatically and then creditshere are the actual developers thatworked on this piece of software nowlast but not least before we end offthis video I want to actually see ifthis shutdown option in here willactually allow us to shutdown the systemso let's try it out now it's gonna saydo you want to save current desktopconfiguration sure and well it lookslike it just closes out of the programbut interestingly enough the desktoplike background setting that I modifiedwhere I change the background color tothat like bluish color you can see thatit actually applied on the rightthe Windows desktop so that part isworking it's just the part of theprogram actually you know showing all ofthe icons that is and then displayingthe proper background that is notactually working and we can even try torun this again and let's see if it maybe ok so it basically does the samething it'll open up but you can see thatthe background you know is not like wecannot interact with any of the iconsanymore and then when we right-click itbasically just displays this solid blackcolor even if we had specified in theworkplace shell settings itself that wewanted to change that but honestly guysthere you have it that is attempting torun the IBM a workplace shell which isthe os/2 interface on Windows 10 here in2020 I am honestly very impressed we didhave to do a lot of you know trial anderror with this just you know tryvarious different settings during thesetup process and then even copy somefiles like I mentioned from a workingWindows 3.1 installation that has thatyou know this program running on toWindows 10 but doing all of thatactually got this thing to work onWindows 10 which is insanely cool soguys if you
