hey friends now i don't know if you'verealized from watching my channel overthe years that i'm not actuallythe biggest fan of microsoft windowsshocking i knowbut i have actually done videos in thelast couple of yearssinging the praises of differentversions of windows and you knowhand on heart i will give microsoftcredit when credits to youfor example windows 95 i thought had alot of innovationfrom microsoft and we saw things inthere that are still present indesktop user interfaces today thingslike the start menu for example that youknowis not only still in windows despitethem trying to kill it off in windows 8but also pretty much every linux distrothat you download has got some form ofstart menu in there as welland windows 2000 i thought was a veryelegant and streamlined version ofwindows you knowfor a microsoft operating system sothere are certain versions of windowsi've been impressed with over the yearsbut i think it kind of goes back to mydays as a real hardcoreloyal amiga user i used amigas allthroughout the 90s and up until actually2001so it wasn't until windows xp came alongthat i finallypacked up my amiga 1200 and moved overto the dark sidebecause before that i remember seeingwindows 95 and thinkingthat microsoft were finally catching upwith the things that my media could doadmittedly using four times the ram andfour times the storage capacitybut before that i mean you know ithought windows 3.1 was a complete jokecompared to amiga os but in the timesince then i meani was that teenager that had the theintel outsidedesktop wallpaper on my amiga i sharedthis gif behind me with uhvarious friends on the early web i'msure buti've admitted the fact that i do need touse windowsfor work purposes and that is the casefor many of us and i think generally ifyou're a windows useryou kind of use it by default becausethere are programs on there that youhave to use i've never really met anyonethat uses windows because they'rea fan of it or they enjoy using it andlooking around my house i mean i've gotone windows machine which is the onebehind merunning windows 10 but i've got variouswork applications on there that onlywork with windowsapart from that i've got six currentmacs around the housei edit all my videos on this m1 mac mininext to me which works greatand i have about four or five linuxmachines as well in various rooms of thehouseso really i'm not much of a windows userthese daysand maybe you're the same and you'rethinking how can i get away from usingwindows in 2021well obviously we have things like linuxwith winein there where you can run with variousdegrees of successdifferent windows only applications butalso there is adrop in open source windows replacementoperating systemthat's actually been in developmentsince the mid 90s calledreactos so i haven't really given a testdrive for a while so i thought in thisvideowe download the latest version of reactos and find outhow well it works as a windowsreplacement in 2021now just to total av forsponsoring this videookay so before we get stuck indownloading and installing react os ithought i'd give you a quick bit ofbackground on the projectas i mentioned it started all the wayback in 1996originally under the name free win 95and as that suggests it was originallyaiming to be a drop in replacement forwindows 95and over the years the name was changedto react osand they expanded the aims of theproject to instead duplicate thefunctionalityof windows nt which of course forms thebasis of all modern versions of windowsyou know windows 10 is actually ntversion 10.0and despite react os having been indevelopment for 25 yearsprogress on it has been pretty slowto say the least and all these yearslater in 2021it is still only in alpha state nowadmittedly that is rather slow it's notcompletely uniquein the world of operating systems i meani could usethis opportunity to mention gnu heardagain but i got enough hate about thatin the last video so i will quickly moveonnow the current version of react os is0.4.3and that was released in april of 2020but on their website there are alsonightly builds that are more up-to-dateand include some newer featuresobviously that might be compromisingstabilitybut based on the advice i've receivedfrom the forums it is worth trying thenightly builds so i'm going to be usingthe latest nightly build for this videoand installing it invirtualbox to test it out now i did havea pc ready to try reactos on physicalhardwarebut after burning a cd image i couldn'teven get the system to bootand apparently that is not uncommon youknow alpha software and everythingso after we've downloaded the iso filewe can get to work installing reactosall right and here we are inside thevirtualbox manager and i've created avirtual machine that should have theideal settings toinstall react os i've read these onforums onlineand i can put them in the videodescription if you're interested but asyou can see here we've got 32 megabytesof video memoryum the vbox vga graphics controller 2dvideo and 3dacceleration enabled um we've got the ac97audio controller the pc netfast3 net for networking and now all we needto dois attach thevirtual box cd image and we should beable to boot from thatand hopefully get it installed andworking insidevirtualboxand straight away we get this uh warningherewhich i'll ignore and as you can see nowwe've booted straight into thereactos installer and the first thingthat you will notice about it isit is very reminiscent of the windowsinstallers from the erathat it's attempting to emulate umobviously windows 98 and windows 2000look like this that kind of a blue andsilver dostyle screen so we'll go to umunited kingdom and enter to installand then we do get a warning that reactos is in alpha stage meaning it's notfeature completeand is under heavy development it isrecommended to use it only forevaluationand testing purposes and not as yourdaily usage os so there you gonow let's have a look here umthat looks fine except that then we havethe unpartitioned disk space hereso if i press enter that should createone umand then we can select a file systemhere as wellnow we do have the um butter fs there aswell which i have used in linux beforeobviously we are trying to copy windowsas it were so i thinkprobably the fat file system whichobviously is in windows will probably bea better choice i could be wrong butwe'll go with thatand we'll do a quick format and then itasks which directory you want to installthe react os files in soyou know normally on windows you put itin slash windows obviouslyin here it will be slash react osand then the installer is doing itsthing andit seems pretty quickinstall the bootloader yeah we'll dothat and there we go we're at the stagenow wherewe are ready to reboot and run it by thelooks of it so what i'll dois here we also need to remove the umthe cd image before we reboot so i'llpause it and then we can go tojust remove that there we goand that was really fast i mean i don'tknow when the last time you installedwindows 98 was buti did that in a recent video and it tookaround 45 minutes so um yeah this isway improved over that so we'll try it'sthe standard version of react osand you get that really cool logo thereand as you can see the copyright date atthe bottom was2021and yeah this is very much like windows2000 with those you know nice gradientsat the top there which is you knowdefinitely a bonus for me i mean i thinkwindows 2000 is probably my favoriteuser interface on any version of windowsit looks really clean and really eleganti thinkum so here we are doing a bit more setup by the looks of itum and they acknowledge the open sourceprojectsthat we use to create react os and otherelements of wine in there that imentioned a bit earlierum various other projects here as wellsort of skip thatand then we need to choose a productoption so we can havereactos server or workstationso on server the system will berecognized as a server private foldersare independent from my documents what'sworkstationi guess it just means whether you wantto do network shares by the looks of itsowe'll give it a try and server herewe can um customize our locale settingsyeah that all looks fine and then thekeyboardyeah it's already on english as you cansee it's cutting off the bottom of thescreen here a little bit in virtualboxbutum i could scale it which makes it allfat so yeah i think we'll just go intouhinto this for now hopefully we can solvethat in the graphics drivers laterum yeah keyboard's been detected fineum reboot now for languageno weird then we'll put our name in hereyeah this is almost exactly likeinstalling windows 2000um even down to the weird name that theygive you a machineuh an administrator passwordi don't think we need that then my timezone is correct if it's very early inthe morning hereand now we can pick a theme for react osnow it's currently on uh a classic bythe looks of it and that's cool actuallythat it changes in the installer so youdon't have to wait till it bootsand we have my myzoo lunai think we'll go with a classic one youknow that looks a bit more like windows2000 like i mentioned beforeum yep typical settingsit will be part of a domain yeah we'lladd it to mynetwork shares why not in what groupreactos could not find a wine geckopackage which is needed for embeddinghtml to work correctly okayinstall itokay now our first problem here it lookslike maybei haven't configured the internetconnection properly or there are nodrivers installed maybe sowe can skip that for now okay that'sgonna do another rebooti am impressed at how responsive and howquickly we're going through theinstaller hereas i said compared to those old versionsof windows you know this is flyingand here we go um we found anew device driver for system deviceyeah that's very vague um okay tradingautomaticallydriver couldn't be found okayuh this one for the audio device okayinstall automaticallycouldn't be found right this could bebecause we haven't got a networkconnection workingum but as we can see here you know weare on the the reactos desktopand yeah wow this looks very much likewindows 2000 doesn't it um even down tothe start menu there in the corner herelook at that[Music]and we'll have a look through some ofthe in-store programs andsettings very soon they have done a verygood job at this thoughbut i wonder if i did read that you caninstallthe virtualbox guest editions to get youknow graphics drivers and audio workingum and as you can see here reactos isreporting aswindows nt version 5.2 which i thinkwhat was thatwindows xp alright so nt 5.2 is actuallywindows server 2003 so actually a littlebit newer than windows xpso um hopefully we can install the guestadditions fromvirtualboxfor server 2003 and it should work youknow if reactos does what it says itdoesand can run windows programs so i'veinstalled thecd image there going to my computer andthere you go we can see it thereso you got that installed by the looksof it we'll give it a reboot andhopefully we've now gotgraphics and audio drivers working andwe canmake it full screen and there we goand the virtual screen is currently setto 8-bit color mode wonder if these worknowno but we should be able to put it intoum full screen mode now andthere we go it's not all stretched outwe've actually got a decentdisplay resolution here so let's go intoum the same way you do it from windowschanging thescreen resolution and properties andyeah this looks identicalso i think we're going to um settingsyeah we can actually put that up tonow i've got a 16 9 monitorso maybe that would work let's tryputting it in umtrue color as well maybe 24 bitlet's try that okay so i've beenexperimenting with different screenresolutions for a couple of minutes andunfortunately it seemsthe only way that i can get the truecolor 32-bit graphics depthis by running it in 960 by 498resolution which obviouslyis a pretty low screen resolution in2021but if i change it to anything else itkeeps defaulting back to256 colours and everything looks reallywashed out on screenbut actually for the purposes of doing avideo 960x498 it's probably idealactually because you can see everythingi'm doing on the screenwithout me having to keep you knowzooming into different areas sowe'll stick with it for the rest of thisvid and hopefully it won't cause toomany problemsbut while we're in the displayproperties which again looksvery very similar to those old schoolversions of windowsi thought we'd have a little look atwhat else we can change from hereas you can see there are some of thosethemes that we sawon the installer that actually we canjust jump right into from herewithout having to reinstall reactos solet's see what those look like now thisone is calledlotus so if we apply that as you can seeeverything changes to this really darktheme here um the start menu you knowyou've got that kind of blackreactos logo in the corner there and wehave one called lunawhich actually i thought luna might besimilar to windows xp you know withrounded corners and everything you knowthethe fisher-price theme as we used tocall it which is called luna butactually it looks a bit more like a kindofdark mode and we also have mizu in thereas well on my zooyeah i do quite like that one actuallythat looks quite modernthat kind of flat look that you get inmodern versions of windows and there isactually one called modernum which again another dark kind ofthemei'm not a fan of really using dark modesreally i generallyprefer light themes in my operatingsystems you know to keep me awakeuh but on this one i think we'll go backto the classic theme you know muchprefer thatwindows 2000 kind of look um and we havehere's some different color schemes inhere as well some of which actually looklike they've been lifted straight fromthe old versions of windows yeah likethat pumpkin i don't remember that onewheateggplant that was definitely in windowsi think i did use that one for a whilein windows 98 uhreactos classic which is you know a 9598 theme by the looks of itum red white and bluecool we'll stick with the uh thestandard one now that kind of windows2000 gradient look i've alwayspreferred that um screen savers now wehave a couple installed thegood old 3d tech screensaverrunning very smoothly that looks veryniceand um yeah the the lock screen one thatyou could havebackgrounds yeah it looks like wehaven't got any installed by default butobviously you know you canadd your own in there let's look at thedevice managerthere you go see everything is installedhere our networkadapter should be installed and workingby the looks of this so this might be agood time actually to see if we can getonlineso i do think there is a web browserbundled withreact os there we go the wine version ofinternet explorerum which i haven't got high hopes forbut i think there are otherweb browsers that we can run in hereand by the looks of it is trying to loadthe reactor west homepageand uh not having much joylet's try something we know works googleand by the looks of it it is connectingto google and pulling throughsomething here because the url haschanged but we're not getting anythingdisplayedin the browser let's try a really simplewebsitethe oldnet.com which is you know a basichtml 1.0 website which again is notpulling throughi wonder if this is related to thaterror message i saw oninstall about html rendering you knowthe the geckoedition that it couldn't install umbecauseby the looks of it we're not getting anhd any html rendered in the web browserum we'll do a quick check to see if wehave gotnetwork connectivity so if we go intothe command promptwe should be able to do a ping to googleand there you go it's been returned soyeah we are connected to the network andthe internet sothat is working maybe we can install adifferent web browser andget that working now in hereif we go to add and remove programs thatis very different to windows becauseas you can see we do have a packagemanager here as well where we canactually install third-partyapplications inside react os so that issomething that you didn't havein the old versions of windows you knowthe the package manager the windowsapp store wasn't introduced until ithink it was windows 7 or maybe windows8.so we'll explore that and get somethird-party programs installed and maybeget a new web browserthat will render html in just a bit buti thought we'd have a look at what elseis installed here i mean if we go intowindows explorer as you can see this isall very similar to windows we've gotthe cdrive there d which is my virtualcd-rom drive and then the file structureidentical to windows we have mydocuments folders thereand program files are all installed herethe reactos folderlet's try a few of those umout-of-the-box in-store programswe have you know clones of notepad andpaint they go paint looksextremely similar to windows virtuallyno difference theresame with notepadthe calculator which again as you'dexpect looks like the windows 2000version of thewindows calculatorword pad yeah i forgot they used to belike umis that still in windows now i knownotepad's in there but wordpad was a bitmore fully featuredand i remember couldn't this loadwindowscredit load microsoft office files inhere as well stuff that same with wordi remember being a lot more fullyfeatured than umnotepad for example all the different umyou know toolbars here that we've gottenthe different fonts and everythingyeah forgot about wordpadand there are quite a lot of fontsinstalled by default again all the onesyou would have got on thereearlier versions of windows by the looksof it administrativetools again same as windows we've got afew games in here i mean yeah come onthey had to install solitaire didn'ttheythe amount of hours that were wasted inoffices all across the world playingsolitaire back in the dayi think i saw a version of minesweeperthere as well yeah wine mineagain another version that you get withuh with wine by the looks of itand spider solid therea different version of solitaire i mustadmit i was never a solitaire playerso i don't really know my way around itso yeah not really a lot to it you knowas you get with a stock windows 2000install everything that we kind of needtoget us set up and going is installed umbut we'll try installing a few of thesethird-party applications now now 7-zipis something that i always installin windows straight away so we'll getthat abby wordwhich um a snappy and open source wordprocessor i've have used that beforei think it is like an open sourceversion or clone of ummicrosoft word um adobe air yeah i thinkwe need that oneuh the ac97 audio driver but i think bythe looks of itthe audio appears to be working anywayso we'll skip that one uhflash yet we don't need that um hey wellinstant messengeryeah some of these actually do date thissoftware don't they i meani can't remember the last time i spoketo anyone i named probablyaround 2002and we have a cd ripper there as wellaudacity andit's actually quite a nice fullyfeatured open source audio editor sowe'll give that one a tryum c cleaner there as wellnow imagine these are all older versionsof these programs because umthis is obviously only working up towindows server 2003 compatibilityso the current versions i imagine thatrequire you know windows 10 and notgonna work in hereum hover love that gameon windows 95 we'll give that a try umanything else we want or got libreofficethere as well that is obviouslya fully featured office suite which willbe handy to havea few of the microsoft net frameworks inthere as wellbut i think the main thing that we needis a web browser soby the looks of it the latest version offirefox that we've got in here isversion 48 which umis going back a bit now what we on thatlike version 80. so i think for nowlet's try installing those and see ifthey work before we get anything else soclick on install here and it will ask mewherei want to install them yeah in programfiles same as we would on windowsall right so i've got to say i wasreally impressed with the installprocess from the package managereverything automatically downloaded noerrorsit incrementally installed everythingand it looks like the programs iselected have all installedsuccessfully and as you can see thereare a bunch of them on the desktopalreadyand so we'll try audacity the audioeditor that i mentioned which i haveused beforeum and that appears to be workingjust fine in here obviously a little bitcramped due to thelimited screen resolution um i haven'tgot a microphone or anything attached soum yeah i imagine that's not going toworkbut it does look like you know the theuser interface is working fine andwe can use the program i imagine solet's try something that we can actuallyumdemo on here libreoffice now this isactually quite abig office suite so the fact thatthey've got thisinstalling them working fine in here andbut i imagine it's got quite a lot ofdependencies um the windows version ofitit's going to be a good test of it soyeah as you can see we canmake a document a spreadsheet apresentation or a graphic let's try justthe standard writer documentokay we have that weird blue barappearing there i'm not sure what thatis i'm not alibreoffice user normally[Music]yeah that appears to be working justfine in hereum definitely usable and i've mentionedin videos beforei do use um microsoft office 365 throughworkand i use you know google drive and iuse friend office but reallyfor the kind of things i do in a wordprocessor i meani haven't really used a new feature inmicrosoft wordsince about 1997 so i could definitelyget bywith using this for my daily wordprocessingneeds no problem at all with this um thegraphics have kind of corrupted a bitthere and i've made that a bit too bigmaybeyeah so definitely we've got someglitching there and it appearsnow yeah um it crashedum so i also installed firefox here aswellgo away um which hopefully we can nowaccesswebsites using so it is obviously anolder versionof firefox but it should still work witha lot of sites i imagine you have notseen that user interface on firefox fora couple of yearswhen is this from about firefoxyeah there's no year on here but i'vegot a feeling it wasat least a decade agothere is an update available okay andunfortunately after installing thefirefox updateit won't run now i get this errormessage here saying that a uhdynamic dll couldn't be found um soi think we'll try uninstalling that andthen not doing the update i mean i'vechecked this version of firefox is from2016 so you know it's not hideouslyoutdated i imaginea lot of websites and forums and thatkind of thing would work fineusing it that was version 48 that i hadmaybe we canjust reinstall over it as it doesn'tactually see itbeing installed on the system theuninstall icon is greyed out so maybe wecan just install over the top of itokay let's try launching again and therewe go we're back to the version that weinstalled in the first place so let'stry a website that i know workslet's try the old net.com as i mentionedand now we have web browsingin react os as you can see now this is avery simplisticum website that's designed to work onolder machines uma lot older than this actually workswith you know 1990s computersbut as you can see here reallyresponsive the rendering looks fine tomelet's try we will not do the update thistimegoogle.comand again you know looking fine herelet's try the react os websiterenders very nicely very responsive sowe're going to really tax it now bytrying youtube which i haven't got highhopes for but you never knowyeah that's telling me that i need toupdate my web browseras it isn't supported anymoreunfortunatelymy wikipedia i imagine should work fineyeah so i mean it is possible to dobasic web browsing in here let's trytwitteras you can see my twitter feed isdisplaying fine in here as well againdefinitely at a usable speed i wasupdating myhue light bulbs a bit earlier um so i'dsay you know in terms of web browsing ifyou don't do anything too demanding itlooks likereact os has got that covered using thisum older version of firefoxso um that's something we can tick offthe list of uh things that we need to doand i've even managed to get googledrive launching insidefirefox here now admittedly it isabsolutely crawlingand there are some rendering issuesprobably because of thelow screen resolution but it looks likeit isusable in here we can create a newdocument and we do get the message thatuh there we go we've got our first bluescreen of deathum right in the middle of trying to dosomething in google drive againyou know like i said it's alpha softwaresothese things are to be expected so we'lldo a quick reboot of the machineand a quick reboot later and we are backinto react osso we did get google drive working inthere you know slowly uh before we gotthe blue screen of death soi think we can tick off web browsing imean firefox even though it's a fewyears oldshould do pretty much everything i needapart from video streaming so i'mquite impressed with how well that ranactually and what else did we install inhere as well we did have a couple ofgames i installedum including hover which i don'tthink ran the installer it just usedwinzip to place the files somewhere onthe hard disk here but i'm not exactlysure where so let's have a look aroundand there it is we've detected you'renot running in 256 it will still runyeah we're running in true color mode sothat should be fineand f2 to start the gamewhere noah i know how to play hoverand again that is running really reallysmoothly in hereactually nicer than when i uh run thisinside awindows 98 virtual machine ina video recently soyeah these early 3d windowsgames appear to run quite nicely insidereactosso i downloaded and installed a bunch ofdifferent programs from the applicationsmanagerwith varying degrees of success nowapart from the oddgraphical glitch here and there i've gotto say most of them ranreally well and these are programs thati used to use daily back in the windowsxp erasome of which i still use quiteregularly todayand a lot of the time if it wasn't forthe react oslogo on the start menu in the corner ofthe screen i could actually forgetthat i was running reactos and imagine iwas using windows 2000instead the experience really is thatsimilaruntil you run into something thatcompletely locks the system upwhich i've got to say happens a lot morewhen using react os than it did on theolder versions of windowsin my experience but again this is alphaquality softwareso there you go that's been react osjust a little demo to kind of show youwhere it's at the momentand uh to answer the title to this videocan it replace windows in 2021 umwell obviously not um and really to behonest it probably couldn't even replacewindows in2001 in its current state butinstead of you know usually when i watchvideos about react os this would be thebitin the conclusion where the presenterridicules the project and kind of ripsit aparti'm not going to do that though becausei actually think they are to becommended for the the progress thatthey've actually put into this eventhough you know it's been in developmentsince 1996people don't realize what a gargantuaneffort it isto replace something like windows andwhen you look at microsoft and they'vegot1.3 million programmers working onwindows 10800 000 designers and 2 billion peopletesting it outand i know from reading the forums andcomments from the reactos teamthey are literally a handful ofprogrammers many of themdoing in their spare time for no moneyso when youcompare microsoft's resources to reactosthe fact that they've even got to thestage where it is kind of gettingcomparableto windows 2000 i think is amassive massive achievement so i'mcertainly not going to crap on them forthe progress that they've made over thelast couple of decadesnow i do think as well that by the timethey get to the stage this is the bigquestion i've got not whetherreact os can get to the point that itcould be a windows 10 replacementbut it's whether or not it's reallyneeded today and you knowi see windows becoming less and lessrelevant as time goes oneven ignoring the fact that most of ustoday do our generaldaily computing if you like using asmartphoneand then when we get into the office todo actual work i mean there are so manydifferent solutions nowand even for the general user i mean ifyou watch my channel you're probably thesamei've been my family's you know techsupport for as long as i can rememberand it got to the stage where i wasgetting fed up like my cousins and myauntie's ringing measking me to decrapify their windowslaptop you knowhaving to vnc into it and uninstall allthese toolbars andcrap that they've downloaded onto thereit got to the stage where i was like youknowwhat do you do with your machine andpretty much all of them were like surfthe webdo a bit of shopping on amazon go onfacebookmaybe write your document or email usinggoogle docsand my advice to them now is you know bychromebook i think you know there's noreal reason for people to use windowsoutside of a corporate environment andeven that i mean there are efforts outthere like you knowyou may know that i'm involved in thefriend os project which actually takesthe wholedesktop file system and applicationsparadigmand puts it inside a web browser youknow html5 andjavascript is so powerful now that youknow you don't really needa desktop on your hard disk or your ssdand if you do want that traditionaloperating systemenvironment you know linux now that'scome on strides in the last couple ofdecadesand i think when it gets to the stagewhen companies like adobeif it ever gets to the level wherethey're porting stuff like photoshop andthe adobe suiteover to linux i mean i can't really seewhy anyone would choose to use windowsif the applications you needexist on something like linux so my realquestion isn'twhether reactor west will ever get tothe stage of replacing windows 10it's whether it really needs to or notso um yeah maybe some controversialthoughts in
