today we're going to be looking at therebirth of an operating system that wasonce expected to change the world butunfortunately never didnow once upon a time back in the late1980s microsoft helped to develop a newoperating system platform that was adirect competitor to windows andsomething which many people believedcould actually become the new default osfor pcsand the team who gave us the originalhardware and software for the pcplatform ibm and microsoft teamed up torelease operating system 2 or os2 as itwas abbreviatedalthough very soon after developmentstarted seeing it as a competitor totheir windows 3.1 platform and not beenable to reach an agreement on how tomarket it microsoft dropped out leavingos2 in the hands of ibmand os2 offered some very nice featuresfor the time by the time os2 warp wasreleased in 1995 it gave you excellentcompatibility with dos and windows 3.1applications and in fact in reviews itwas often referred to as a better dosthan dos and a better windows thanwindows after an estimated 990 milliondollars a year was spent on developmentos2 just couldn't topple the microsoftdominance and at its peak it neverreached higher than a 5 market share ofpc operating systemsand despite finding uses in embeddedapplications such as atms os2 was phasedout by ibm by the mid-2000sin 2001 a spin-off operating systemknown as ecom station was developed by agroup called serenity systems with theaim of allowing os2 applications to runon more modern hardware and althoughecom station appears to be still on saleat the time of recording this videofinancial hardships mean that it hasn'tbeen updated for a decade nowand there have been several userpetitions for ibm to open source os2 butthis is something that ibm havecontinually refused to do probably dueto the fact that it contains third-partycode from microsoft as well asapparently quite interestingly fromcommodorenow according to legend ibm did atechnology transfer with commodoreallowing them to use their rex scriptinglanguage from os2 in amiga os in returnfor using some of the amiga technologyfor os2 version 2.0 and above at leastthat's according to several sources i'veread online but i must admit i can't seeany of the amiga technology in os2 oraker os at a glancestep forward to 2015 and a new os2derived operating system arrivedoriginally known as blue lion and laterrenamed arka osnow arca os is a closed sourcecommercial operating system that aims tobring os2 into the 21st century and itcan run legacy 16 and 32-bit os2applications16-bit windows apps dos programs recscripts and lots more as well and itbrings more modern benefits such aslarge disk support multi-core supportand it can access up to four gigabytesof ramand just to clarify this is a paid forcommercial operating system with at thetime of recording this video no free ordemo version available and a personallicense will cost you 129but what can you do with it in 2021 andhow well does it run well i just want togive a big thank you to the arka os teamwho actually supplied me with a reviewcopy of the os for this video but justto clarify it's not a paid for orsponsored video they were just kindenough to send me a copy of it to tryout and beyond that i'm able to give mycomplete honest opinions on itso i'm installing archer os on a prettystandard pc a fujitsu esprimo pentiumdual core machine running at 2.8gigahertz with four gigabytes of ram a320 gigabyte hard disk in here thismachine is around 10 years old and wasoriginally sold with windows 7.so i've done the aka os image to a dvd-rand the installer is verystraightforward now you boot from thedisk originally you're asked to selectyour font size which for this video i'veincreased it to make it more visible onthe video you get your keyboard optionsin there as well and you can even changethe mouse to be left or right handed soon the first screen we do get some verynice accessibility options hereand then you get the multi-page termsand conditions which of course we'regoing to read in depth before continuingand then you need to select the volumeyou want to install arca os on now as imentioned i've got a hard disk in herethat currently has windows 7 installedbut i'm happy to overwrite that with asingle volume using the default optionsand then it will gather informationabout the drivenow this stage it warned me that thereare some problems with the disk layoutso i select fix problems and it asks meto give the machine a reboot and we dothat with a control alt delete from thekeyboard and then it will boot from thedisk again we've run through theaccessibility options andskip past the t's and c's and then itried the disk setup again now at thisstage it can't actually see any of mydrives in the target volumes list and ifi go to manage partitions it tells methat the drive is corruptso i tried to create a volume on thedisk a standard bootable volume butunfortunately try as i might i couldn'tfigure out how to format the drive orsee any option to do it from theinstaller now i was looking for about 10to 15 minutes and after a bit ofgoogling and checking forums peoplesuggested to me that i simply format thedrive if i've got an existing windowspartition on there as there doesn'tappear to be a way to erase it properlyso i downloaded the free version of aprogram called dfc which is a bootableapplication that can manage drives fromthis very minimal interface and fromhere i was able to delete the windows 7ntfs partitionand then booting into the arc osinstaller again i was able to select thedrive and run through the rest of theinstaller so a bit of a hurdle thereobviously if you're installing it to anew drive with nothing pre-installedthat probably won't be an issue but it'sworth knowing if you're overwriting anold windows installand next we get a very nice hardwareoverview screen showing the system andrecognized attached devices and driversand i was quite impressed to see thatakka os actually found my networkadapter straight away and automaticallyinstalled the relevant driverand after that the installer does itsown thing this part took around 15minutes to complete as it copied overall the required files from the dvd-rand during the install process we get acouple of reboots before we land on thearca os desktop for the very first timeso next we'll explore the bundledapplications in arca os we'll test outrunning some older os2 programs on hereand how well does it run windows 3.1 anddos programs and games all of thatcoming up in just a minute and justbefore we jump into that i wanted theirsupport of my channelokay so here we are on the arka osdesktop for the very first time now ijust want to say before i get intoexploring this in a bit more detail andgiving you a bit of a tour you knowlearning my way around it really andthat is what this video is going to beit's going to be me as a new user toarca os exploring it as i haven't got abackground with os2 i didn't use it backin the day i've been playing around withos2 warp and ecom station in virtualboxover the last couple of days but apartfrom that my experience with os2 goes nofurther so i'm far from an expert and iknow there'll be people watching thisvideo who've used os2 for like 35 yearswho know like the back of their handprobably screaming at me as i getterminology wrong and that kind of thingthat is going to happen i don't reallyknow this operating system so reallywe're looking at this with a fresh pairof eyes and exploring it as a brand newuser but i thought i'd just get that outthere at the start before the inevitablecomments so here we are on the desktopwhich i think is actually called the uhthe workplace shell so i've done a bitof research and that's the name of thegraphical user interface that is carriedover from os2 and my first impressionsarethat it looks really nice you know wehaven't got much clutter here it's avery clean looking user interface withthem some nice looking default iconshere we have a taskbar down the bottomand a start menu over here where you'dexpect to find it in the uh the bottomleft of the screen or maybe the x buttonchoosing by the little pop-up thatappeared over it there that might bewhat it's called but again i mean ifyou're coming from something likewindows or any really any linux distrothese days you're going to be able tofind your way aroundall these navigational tools reallysimple um one thing that really jumpedout to me on first boot is that we havethese six different virtual workspaceswhich you can flip between using thiswidget that actually appears on boot andagain this is something i saw using os2warp and ecom station so it's been inos2 for a long time but to demo that ifi open the computer icon here you'll seethe computer appears in there and thenif i drag that tothe right of the screen i can click onthe next workspaceand carry it oversothere's nothing revolutionary about thatbut the thing about it is having that soin your face in the corner of thegraphical user interface when you bootobviously it's built into a lot of otheroperating systems but usually i findthat the virtual workspaces i kind ofburied on some obscure keyboard shortcutor it might be a small menu item in thetop corner of the screen having itreally prominently displayed by defaultdown here and giving you these sixvirtual desktops gives you a lot of realestate and i think it makes it probablyyou're gonna be more likely to use ithaving it so obvious so i think that's avery nice move actuallynow anyone that's used windows before isgoing to find the desktop very familiaragain like i mentioned we've gotcomputer there which is you know like mycomputer and windows you've got thenetwork explorer there as well with umyou know some extra tools in theretrashcan which um recycle bin on windowsone thing i'll find is um when usingthisif you come from a windows backgroundthere is one thing that might take sometime to adjust to now that is the windowgadgets here now we have three of themin the top right corner obviously onwindows clicking the last one is whatyou'd normally use to close the windowalthough in across clicking it actuallymaximizes the windowand then the next one minimizes it downto the the taskbar there to close awindow it is the first gadget which is awindow with a line through it you knowwhich makes sense you click that and thewindows vanish um which obviously isn'ta problem there's nothing wrong withdoing that it's just the way that thisoperating system does it but you knowhaving used windows for so longi'm recording this uh you know i've hada couple of attempts at doing this um ikept clicking that over and over againtrying to close windows you know it'sjust kind of muscle memory and it's justa different way of doing things but yeahthat is probably something that willcatch you out if you're used to the waythat windows does things another thing inoticed as well that could be somethingi'm doing wrong but actually umnavigatingand moving files around was a bitdifferent so if we go into drives hereyou can see um the drives that thismachine recognizes um again the samenaming convention as windows we have ana drive there b which would be floppydrives if i had them on this machine cis um the disk drive inside the machineand then if i try to um move a file forexample i've got a few um files i'vedownloaded um i should go to the homefolder here and then put downloads thereso there should be a couple of filesthat i've downloaded from the internetin here um which don't appear to beshowing nowgo back into there maybe now there we gosee if i want to move say for example umthis file here into the downloads foldernormally on most operating systems icould click on itand then i could just drag and drop itinto the place i want it to goi can't get that workingin acura os to move files around theonly way that i could figure out how todo it from the desktop was to rightclick on the file on the move uh go topickupand that changes the icon to umthis little pointer here that i can thenclick on the destination i want to moveit to click in there right click andthen go to drop and that will move thefileso i do find that a bit cumbersome imean there might be a way i've triedright clicking it or you know doubleclicking with both buttons i've triedmiddle clicking i can't see any otherway to actually physically drag and dropfiles without having to go through allthose menu items which um yeah i thoughtwas a little bit fiddly it would be nicejust to have drag and drop but you knowmaybe that's the way that os2 has donethings for years and you know obviouslyused to it but it would be nice to havethe option maybe it's buried somewherein the preferences but yeah out of thebox that's the only way that i couldfind to um move programs around so thatdid uhdid require a little bit of figuring outum for me to do thatso we'll close all these down now andwe'll check a few of the um bundleprograms in here as well now you can gofrom the start menu down here as imentioned so um desktop which actuallygives you a link to the uh thedirectories that you've got here so ifwe go to programsthat kind of gives me a directory viewof what you'd find in here so there'sjust two ways of accessing it really umso we'll go into um some look at installsoftware first of all um we have a fewtools in here we've got firefoxinstalled by default um which obviouslyis a mainstream web browser that youknow is nice to see in here i'm not surehow old this version of firefox is andthe icon obviously looks likefirefox from a few years ago so we'lldouble click that and give it a launchand umi haven't got a wi-fi adapterconnected to this machine it hasn't gotwi-fi installed inside it so i've got anethernet cable plugged in so i can'treally demo how well archer os connectsto wi-fi networks in this video butlet's see if it works on hereconnected via ethernetyeah we're getting the umresults here yeah soa piece to be connected to the internetworking uh just fine here in firefox seehow old this version is because it doeslook a few years old the ui version45.9 you know i know firefox isdefinitely further ahead than that nowi'm not a firefox user these days andi've been chrome for pretty much thelast decadeumfirefox45.9 was that release datesee when that cameout so that was 2017. so yeah whenyou're talking to browser this you knowit's a few years old now umbut probably won't have that many issueson modern websites let's try one of myyoutube videos um which is always a goodtest on an alternative operating systemas i found you know using stuff likemorpho s and haiku and react os recentlyone thing that those operating systemstend to struggle with is youtube youknow that's always a good test of abrowser in an alternative operatingsystem so we'll try my recent pi stormvideo okay should we get it startedand appears to beworking fine in here we've got theadvert there we'll skip through thatthere we go here is my video from a fewmonths ago about the pie storm so umyeah appears to be playing just fine inhere so that is actually uma big bonus you know compared to mostalternative operating systems againhaving firefox i think really helpsthereso that is obviously a big bonus havinga mainstream browser that you know siteslike youtube recognize because normallyon alternative operating systems youhave to spoof it as mozilla or chrome orsomething like thatso um yeah it looks like it's playingright herea little bit slow but you've got toremember this machine is 10 years old sooften expected to fly on youtube evenrunningwindows are linux and we can do the nowthat i've got that cinema mode thatappears to be all right can we do fullscreen raspberry pi i'm going to closeup there and we're going to be using aprogram called winthis will be working fine so um yeahpast the youtube test with their flyingcolors there so um very good firstimpression here now there could be anewer version of uh maybe firefox oranother web browser available this isthe one that's installed out of the boxin the current edition of varchar os butyou know first impression there the factthat youtube works um i think mostthings probably will after that so uhnice to see that in there and what elsedo we have with some dvd tools um yeahfor authoring dvds by the looks of it wehave a document viewer called a lucidum it's just like pdfe or that kind ofthing it looks likeyeah pdf yes pdf viewer so it's alwayshandy to haveincluded in an operating system um acalculator a nice scientific-ishcalculatorso again all the things you'd expect tofind bundled with any operating systemumit looks like a vnc clients in there aswell uh remote desktop so you canconnect to any windows machinesthunderbird again another mozillaproduct so um good to see a mainstreammail client in here which i imagine youknow will connect to your gmails andthat kind of thing and your outlookservers um they all open in separatewindows as well by default not in thesame window so it doesn't mean that youryour screen can get quite clutteredquite quickly as you're seeing here umlet's try the multimedia folder and thatkind of ages you know os2 multimediathat is such a mid 90's buzzword isn'titwhen we look uh looking here we have umwe have some cd audio players we've gota media player uh a movies folder okayand i guess we have a default umvideo player so double click that see ifthat worksvery smallshould we make that bigger there we golet's look at some uhspace nebulas and stuff flying throughit's playing really smoothly in herethat's an mpeg file um so you have thedefault video viewerlooking good and again you know it'skind of got that um mid 90s kind oftheme to it everything kind of had likemarble or brushed metal kind ofumappearance back then didn't it that wasvery hot back in the mid 90sso yeah nothing too exciting but nice tohave a media player included out of thebox here as well we have a few sounds inthere tooumwaveform and some midi files as welllet's try applausethere you go and that actually playedthrough my headphones here um so i'mhoping you heard that on the video againthat is one thing that um i did read theros can sometimes it's got like a adefault audio driver that doesn'tnecessarily work with all machines butit appears to have just worked out thebox on this um fujitsu pc so that's goodto seeum some great sound effects in here thatis one thing i remember actually whenplaying around with os2 warp thateverything made a sound effect on thatyou opened the window it whistled youminimized everything you did in the guimade the sound effect which um gotreally annoying after a while so it isgood to see them kind of tone that downin agarose you know it's not just uhmaking sounds all the time but there arequite a selection in here so maybe thereis a way to make it do that um with somemidi files in there as wellwhich don't appear to open in anything isee something called midi thereuh maybe i canopen them in hereokay didn't make a sound there thedevice driver cannot be opened all therequired hardware is missing but didplay a sound though didn't it okay ithink that's the error sound that'splaying there maybe one of those old ostwarp sound effects maybe you need actualmidi hardware to play those or maybesome more configuration of the the sounddevice or something but yeah the supportis in there by the looks of it as wellit's going to utilities that we've gotin here um an archive toolum which looks like it's for you openingyour zip files and that kind of thing uma character mapalways useful if you're struggling tofind something on a keyboard shortcutyou know copy and paste them from thereuh clipboard viewer and nothing on theclipboard at the moment um cpu monitorumyou know quite high cpu usage ratherlooks here of 200 just from thisagain i said it's an old machine um dragtextbetween windows and likelike a clipboard kind of thing i guesssir icon editorand this is coolso i can open an icon umoh yeah okay so this is kind ofsomething i used to do on the amigaquite a bit actually make my own iconsor umactually you know do some customizationtothe included ones looks like we have auh a bitmap graphics editor here that wecan just uh mess around with the iconfile so we can make our own you knowchange your screen into a into nightmode you know dark modes everywherethese days so yeah very cool to have anactual icon editor bundle with it aswell that's more of them sound effectsi jinxed it by saying there wasn't anidea here uh metaphile viewer i'm notsure what that one islooks like that's a search for filestool a text editor of course you need atext editorin any operating system looks quite niceas well quite similar to notepad onwindows by the looks of itdiscard thattoolbar okay we can uh looks like a dockwe can have down there at the bottom ofthe screen i think i'll leave that thereit looks quite niceum some problem determination tools youknow kind of debugging on that kind ofthing which we won't go into here um gota couple of games installed by defaultumokayuh boy i definitely need hints wowa version of solitaire that i'vedefinitelynever seen before and looks uhway too complicated for me umyeah i can't make it do anything ohthere we godid somethingyeah more hints pleaseyeah i think we will uhwe'll come out of thatwhat the games that we have in therewith chess yeah you need a good chesssirchess program 3d chess by the looks ofitcan we get we can rotate that roundthat's pretty coolsome nice sound effects againso yeah you know nice of a chest programincludedum and amore traditional kind ofwith the os2 logo on these as wellthat's quite interesting actually someparts of um across seem to be branded ostoo i guess these are probablylegacy applications that are from the umthe original os2yeah this is from 1996 by ibm so itlooks like this is um just you know astraight drag and drop from the olderos2 warp umsetup back then so nothing updated therebut it's cool to see that actually itjust works by you know clicking on ityou'd have to do anything extra to getthe old legacy applications running hereso um with development folder as wellwith the rex console i did briefly touchon rex on the intro and that um you knowif you want to read more about rex i'lllink up the wikipedia article in thevideo description that was also an amigaos as well outrex which is a reallypowerful scripting language that you canactually make full-blown programs withand also a lot of programs have what arecalled rex ports so you can make themkind of interact with each other as wellum a really really powerful language andyeah i think it actually originated inos2 so we have the console there that iimagine is asking me to uh locate a rexfile to load umanother nice sound effect yeahunfortunately i don't know where theyare but you know that's obviouslyincluded here as well if you want itokay so we have some umthese look like the uh the control panelslash preferencessection here um down here in the taskbaricon themeshigh resolution desktop icons arecurrently active okayright so we're on um the aqua os themenowoh wow okay so it's actually got themesfrom uhthe older os2 warp versions in here souh yeah you want that kind of that retrolookumlooks like enable let's try that onethat's quite nicewhy notyou'll need to reboot for the changes totake effect okayslightly excessive but umlet's give it a reboot it doesn't takelong i'm interested to see how thislooksand there we gothe icon theme looking like it's astraight out of 1996 by the looks of itso uh just the way i like ityeah it's pretty cool um a bit annoyingthat it requires a reboot but you knowit didn't take very long umanything else we can check out in herewith a hardware manager as well for youknow managing all your drivers and thatkind of thing by the looks of itum network adapters uh loads ofdifferent fonts that are installed bydefault here tooand we have a package manager includedin arca os as well which is nice to seeand it gives you um as a new user areally simple way uh to not only seewhat you've got installed on your systembut also extra programs and third-partysoftware that's easily downloadablerather having to you know troll the weband find obscure websites with one ortwo files on you can just open thepackage manager here and if you want todownload something you know gives you alittle description here on a what eachone is umokay so just clicking them and thenhitting install and it will alsodownload all the uh dependencies thatyou need as well so we click on that andreally is as simple as you know justpoint and click um and it should be keptup to date with the latest versions ofthese programs as well so i'm also a bigfan of package managers i think you knowparticularly for new users it does savea lot of headaches and it's good fordevelopers as well you know it meansthat they can put their software infront of everyone that's using theplatformnow something very cool about archer osas i mentioned in the video introductionis its ability to run legacy softwarenow if you watch my channel you'reprobably into your retro stuff so thisis something that's included out of thebox and i think is extremely cool now ifi go into um this little menu optionhere we have a few different um sessionsthat we can launch one of them here iswin os2 session full screen so click onthatand as you can see it launches what isessentiallywindows 3.1now i didn't have to set this upmanually i didn't have to find windowsfiles i didn't have to mess around witha virtual machine because you knowwindows 3.1 can actually be a bit of aheadache to get working on um a lot ofthe virtual machine suites out there butthisis just installed out of the box andi've actually installed a couple of oldwindows programs that we have a versionof a microsoft office here from i thinkthis is 1993. second click on that andas you can see that launches you knowjust likeit would have back in the day aboutmicrosoft wordum yeah word version six running herefrom 1984 actually sorry so um iremember using this at school when i wasa kidand uhthis works flawlessly in heresoyou might be thinking why would you wantto use a you know 25 year old wordprocessor but the point is that you knowa lot of people a lot of industry mighthave old machines and old hardware thathave got custom um installedapplications on there that they want tomove to more modern hardware this is areally good way of doing it so um i comeout of this herebeen a long time since i used windows3.1 um i've also installed uh somethingelse you might remember from your schooldays microsoft and carter now if idouble click that it's asking me for acd rom so what i can do here is i clickon ok there we'll go to the desktop iconthat says os2 on it there and that'lltake me back to the elko os desktopand then i've got something here calledum iso fs file system that allows me tomount iso files as a virtual cd-romdrive so i double click that and clickon add and find the fileso i download that into the the tempfolderlet me quickly find that for youand then we have microsoft and carterand there is the disk image so click onok we'll mount thatwe'll get a message down here sayingit's now available for use then if iclick back to my windows 3.1 session andwe'll try and carter againand there we go microsoft and carter1994 edition in all of its schoollibrary glory and uh here we can go tothe contents there umms-dos remembers where it was last timeactuallywe don't necessarily mess to us do wehave a look foros2 there we go and you can waste hoursin here just like we did in thatpre-internet era um looking at all kindsof things in microsoft and carter soagain i mean the fact that cd-rom titleswork with very minimal effort in here ido think it's very cool having this umfull old school windows 3.1 install inhere you know even for like um retrosoftware enthusiasts and retro gamersyou know it is a completelyheadache-free way of just running theseold applications with minimum fuss sonice to see that in here so we can comeout here now um exit windows 2. thatwill just drop me back on the aqua osdesktopand it isn't just windows applicationsfrom back in the day that you can runhere as well we actually have a full doscompatibility mode in here too so if iclick on them dot session full screenthis will take me into you knowessentially pc dos ms-dos if i do um allthe usual dos commands that you know andi've actually got one of my favorite dosgames installed here which is um thelegendary prince of persia so i canlaunch that just as you would on aclassic pcand as you can seethis incredible game launched with nodosbox setup nothing like thatliterally just run the program and umi've even gotpc speaker audio coming out of this umfujitsu pc which appears to have abuilt-in speaker it seems so um yeahjust as it would have on a an old 286 orwhatever you played this on back in theday as you can see now runs reallynicely on here um so if you want to playdos games and stuff you know when youdon't go through all the the headache ofsetting up virtual machines and dust boxand that kind of thing they workcompletely fine straight out of the boxin archer os and to quit them you justpress them control and escape and justbefore we start to wrap this video upobviously we've tested out some legacymicrosoft dots and windows applicationsthere i thought we quickly try out acouple of classic os 2 programs we saw acouple of them that are bundled with theoperating system but obviously they'retested and i thought it might be a bitmore adventurous to try a game from backin the day so i've got another worldwhich is one of my favorite actionadventure games from the early 90s andthis is the original os2 version thatcame out back then and again this shouldrun completely fine just by doubleclicking it we shouldn't have to setanything up or configure anything so ifi double click on the executable filethere is it going to work there we gointerplay logo comes upumand it appears to be running just finehere in 1991 out of this world as it wascalled in uh some parts of the world iknow this is another world and we canmake it full screenum and i remember you know this used togive me goosebumps watching this umintroduction animation on the the amigaand the super nintendo back in the day iwanted to play this onso yeah i mean i thinkobviously there wasn't a big gamingscene on os2 but it is a good demo toshow games running uh on these kind ofthings because games were very demandingand obviously a lot of them kind of tookadvantage of certain hardware so reallyif you know if a game runs well you canpretty much be rest assured that mostthings probably should work on hereso yeah this piece we're playing finecan i skip the intro and get into thegameyeah there he is swimming uplester i think his name wasthere yeah and we can walkand uh yeah get killed by the killerslugs but yeah no so a legacy os2 gameworking completely fine in across i alsodownloaded doomum the original shareware version foros2 as wellumthey obviously made for a smaller screenresolutions than i've got here datingfrom you know the early 90swow yeah that runs really quicklycan i make this full screen maybe thereis a way alternate i'm not surenew gamei'm going then nightmareof coursethey're going to work yepplaying really smoothly you know asyou'd expect it's not a demanding gamefor a modern system but again you knowthis is a legacy os2 game from the early90s and running without any fussdirectly in acro os so uh you know itappears if you want to run these uhclassic games you know if you're a bitof a retro gamer or something like thator we've got legacy applications thatyou want to run this is a really simpleway doing it admittedly um you've got topay for a license so more expensive thandoing it yourself but it is all a pieceof work flawlessly in hereso that's been a quick look at arca osbut is it worth using well obviously youmight have assessed from this video thatit's not aiming to replace windows ormodern linux distributions really asi've kind of touched on a bit in thisvideo i think this is actually designedfor companies who are tied to legacy os2 dos or windows 16-bit applications whowant a more modern way to continue usingthose systems without the expense ofhaving to start over and actually thereis quite a big market for thatespecially with industrial customerswho've got old custom-based softwarethat is still working fine but runningon aging hardware and this gives them achance to keep running it but on modernsystems but outside of that arca os doeshave fans in long-time os2 users andthose of us who want a really easy wayto run retro software and games onmodern pcs i love the fact that it's gotthat windows 3.1 environment in thereand the seamless integration of dos andthe fact you can run os2 software fromback in the day that makes it reallyinteresting for those of us that arereally into vintage computing andoutside of that you can actually doquite a lot of modern computing tasks onhere as well having enough firefox andthere could well be a more modern webbrowser available for it i haven'treally dived into that but the versionof firefox from a couple of years agoplayed youtube fine i was able to signinto my google drive and stuff on hereas well so you can do a lot of moderncomputing web-based stuff on here andthat said a lot of the classicapplications still do the job today imean i probably can't think of a newfeature that i've used in microsoft wordfor about 20 years now so i've reallyenjoyed using arca os i'm going to keepit installed on this machine i'm goingto continue to use it regularly andlearn more about it and follow itsdevelopments as well if you want to readmore about it i will of course link uptheir
