gone fromobscure OS keeping the dream of the 90salive to today where it's bothblisteringly fast and more usable thanever before and perhaps even dailydrivableso today let's install the bleeding edgeof haiku on this lovely old think padand see just how far things have come sostay tunedforeignand if you enjoy these self-inflictedpain of wrenching software to work onobscure operating systems just for thefun of it I hope you'll considersubscribing to the channel So latelyI've been deep down a weird Unix RabbitHole messing around with all sorts ofobscure unix-like systems like Solarisand next step and even irex on the SGIwhich I recently did a bonus video onbut it really got me into the mood to goback to an old friend probably myfavorite obscure unix-like operatingsystem Haiku which I've tried to dailydrive on and off for years the modernopen source reimagining and to someextent re-implementation of BOS thecoolest and most futuristic operatingsystem of the 90s if you're not familiarwith it we'll talk more about it whileit's installing but first let's take alook at the laptop that we're going tobe installing it on and get it ready toget all high cooed up I cued up who'swriting these jokes so this lovely Sleeksvelte machine is a Lenovo ThinkPad t61which I recently picked up at the VCFEast June swap meet and from the momentI laid eyes on this thing I knew exactlywhat I wanted to do with it anyway let'stake a quick look at this thing becauseif there's one thing I love almost asmuch as Apple power books it's old thinkpadsbig beautiful screen with no blemisheswhatsoever and an Intel centrino V Proinside and this centrino is actually aCore 2 Duot8300 dual core running at 2.4 gigahertznot too shabby it supports up to eightgigs of RAM as far as I can tellalthough there's only three gigs in herenow it has an SD card reader firewire uphere and a hardware kill switch forwireless networking two PC card slots aUSB port audio in and out ethernet theall-important modem VGA L and along theside here we have two more USB portsDVDs cdrw and uh well unfortunatelyempty hard drive bay so we're just gonnahave to stick a drive in there and hopefriction holds it in place although I'msure I can 3D print something here andof course on the front here we have themost wonderfully satisfying keyboard totype on a track Point knob with threebuttons and a track pad with your twobuttons here oh most important featurethe think light a tiny LED that with akey combination will shine a flashlightdown on your keyboardbecause backlit Keys weren't a thingback then and for the hard drive I wentall out with a brand new crucial mx500500 gig hard drive I want to give BOSthe respect it deserves and look at itit's nice and Metalprecariously kind of jiggling up anddown in the SATA connector thereperfectand I want to take a look at the ramhere too so we're gonna have to take thePalm rest off of here just a few screwsto remove herethe Palm rest comes offand there's our memory[Music]this is a one gig Samsung stickand this is I guess yeah the two gigstick all right after a quick rummage Ifound coincidentally another Samsungstick at two gigs instead of the one gigthat was in herepretty a USB stick which is veryeasy to do so I don't know why I broughtthis to a CD but I did so let's use itforeignThere She Goes all right so we start outin the Haiku installer but as you cansee it didn't automatically detect thenative resolution of this displayso I'm just going to go into the liveenvironment which it's amazing how fastit isand we're going to go into settingsscreenand yeah there we go 1280 by 800.niceyeah and you can already kind of see howbeautiful and fast and responsivethe Haiku OS interface is and of coursethe BOS interface that preceded thisyeah let's go into the installerbut yeah check it out my favorite partof haiku right hereif you hold Altright alt and drag screens on top ofeach other look at thatall of your windows can be in tabbedgroups that's why Haiku has these littleyellow tabs such a good feature okaylet's uh set up partitions herepartition create active partitionand now we will partition format in theB file systemname it haiku and formatand that wasquestionably fast to format itbut okaymaybe that's just how good Haiku and theB file system areall rightmake sure all the packages are selectedyepbeginall right so while this is installing alittle background on what Haiku actuallyis it was actually an Apple employee wholeft apple and started the Bee Companyand they built the OS and power PCsystems to run it on called B boxes Bkind of slowly faded into non-existencethrough a series of questionabledirections for the operating system butHaiku picked up thenot the pieces but kind of thephilosophy it made an open sourcere-implementation with the original ideaof making it fully compatible with BOSapplications Haiku OS was in Alpha forvery many years something like 20 yearsof course being a full and fastoperating system built by just a prettysmall team of contributors but the firstbeta was released in September 2018 andthere have been four betas in total withthe most recent one coming out onDecember 23 2022 and yeah if you'regoing to install haiku for yourselfthat's probably what you should installwhatever the most recent beta version isbecause that's the most recent officialrelease we're installing the Haikudevelopment Edition from the most recentnightly which uh actually let me seewhat that is hereabout haikuthis is hrev57085 so yeah that's the most recentnightly as of this filming all right soI wanted to film this thing booting intohaiku for the first time but it bootedso fast I wasn't even able to turn mycamera on in time to capture it so holdon let me do a full restartand show you just how fast in real timeHaiku boots up got a stopwatch herelet's go from hitting the power buttonto desktopwhich of course even accounts for thetime that the ThinkPad is figuringitself outto bootso yeah the ThinkPad gets to the Haikusplash screen in 13 secondsandfrom Haiku Splash guy I didn't even hitstop in time okay it was like 20 secondsso the ThinkPad put it into Haiku inwe'll say 22 seconds since I missed thestop button uh but only six seconds ofthose were from the Haiku splash screenappearing to fully loaded desktop that'swildokay so let's start with what I think isthe most interesting thing web browserbecause Haiku always had the webpositive browser which is kind of aspiritual successor to net positivewhich was the BOS web browser becauseactually one of the things that's muchimproved in the nightly versions is thisversion of web positive which has beenupdatedand I guess nowit canplay videos on YouTube although there'sstill some flickering and stuff herebut what I'm really interested inchecking outis a new web browser they're not a newweb browser but new to haikuif we go into Haiku Depot which is theHaiku package and software manager ohyeah right here in the featured packagesunder Network we have gnome web alsoknown as epiphanywhich is a much more modern web browserthan the built-in web positiveit's not completely native to Haiku soyou know it's not gonna completelyfollow the Haiku user interfaceguidelines butit's gonna work a lot better especiallyon Modern websites and web apps alrightso the web web browser is installedoh yeah look at thisit's YouTube and wow that loads muchbetterthen web positive and look what's righthere on the home pagea video from Steve Mack 84about the recent VCF East swap meetand there's audiothere's Brian[Music]oh yeah look at thisyeah full screen even workslet's just turn down the uhquality yeah the quality is already at480.well it's certainly possible and evenenjoyable to watch YouTube videos onHaiku these days that goes a long way tomaking this daily drivablenow you might be saying Sean that's theinternet nobody likes the internetanymore what else is there to do onHaiku well you can do serious work thesedays because tons of things have beenported over to Haiku you have theLibreOffice office office suite you evenhave stuff like open shot the opensource video editor which I tried to usefor this Channel at one point when I wasdoing it all from Linux and here it ison Haiku oh yeah look at thisI could totally edit videos from hereI don't think it does 4Koh it does look at this like a 5k 8K 16kall right yeah I'm just gonna run mywhole YouTube channel from Haiku fromnow onAh that's so coolokay okay okay but what happens if yourfavorite software is not ported to Haikuand it's only on Windows well guess whatwe now have wine and as we all know winestands for wine is not nemulatorallowing us to run booth32-bit and 64-bit Windows applicationsyeah okay wine 64 and then just like MacOS actually we can just drag thingsfrom a window into a terminal and itwill fill in the directory path to itwhich is pretty nicewell it didn't work yeah I don't knowwine does not seem to like somethingabout this particular computer okay wella quick trip to the Haiku forums and itturns out this is a known thing with thelatest versions of the nightlys wine isworking supposedly just fine on the betabut the last few nightlys apparentlybroke it okay one more thing that's veryimportantgames and there is actually quite a loton this front these days well we havedosbox so we can run pretty much any dosgames that we want but we also haveplenty of stuff natively ported over tohaikyuu look at this hexan gz Doomoh breakout ooh moopen 64 is in hereawesome PlayStation Portable emulatorand that's just featured packagesjust look at all this stuff in here allthese gamesso we have classic Cube and mind test ofcourse it spawned me underwateryeah look at thisuh apparently there's no soundand actually the frame rate's not thebest surprisinglyokay but there's one more thing that'spretty awesomesomeone built an installer to actuallydownload and install and runJava Minecraft on herethis script I pulled from the Haikuforums but there was even a picture ofthem using1.19 even though this script only goesup to 1.15yeah these version numbers are just hardcoded solet me hard code in the latest versionand see if we can install thatthere we go 1.20.1and now it's downloading the game andLibrary files from Mojang it's doing itall right Minecraft 1.20.1is installedand there we can see I experimented withsome other ones let's see if this willrunwell game crashed crash report is saveduh yeahdoesn't want to workat the same time we're trying to do thison the nightly version of haiku soprobably shouldn't be that surprisedthat it didn't work okay so I know thetitle of this video is probablysomething cheeky like Haiku got awesomenow in reality Haiku has always beenawesome I mean again I've tried to dailydrive this many times over the years anduh was using it for quite a while to tryto really learn C plus plus and had somesuccess because there's great guides andit's pretty easy to program for haiku soI definitely encourage you now more thanever to give Haiku a shot whether youhave an old computer lying around or youjust want to open up virtualbox or onApple silicon Max UTM runs Haikuflawlessly and
