hello everybody and welcome back toanother video now in today's video asyou can see by the wonderful new setupthat we have here we're gonna be takinga look at another operating system onthe famous five-dollar wonder 98 PC nowas I always say at the very start ofthese videos this is a basically astaple of this channel I've done a lotof videos on this computer but intoday's video as you can probably tellfrom the title we're gonna actually bedoing something that I've been wantingto do for a while and that is installingos/2 IBM os/2 on this computeros/2 is it's something that I've kind ofalways wanted to cover on this channelnot really done any videos on and Ithink I've briefly mentioned it here andthere but os/2 if you're not aware togive you a very tiny like a bite-sizedversion of the full history it was anoperating system that was jointlydeveloped by Microsoft and IBM in themid to late 80s and eventually Microsoftkind of split off and basically gave youknow the full development duties over toIBM Microsoft and went to focus onWindows because Windows ended up being alot more successful to notice too as weall know and so os/2 actually was a bitof a competitor to Windows even thoughit was made partially by Microsoft inthe early days so it's a very complexhistory that deserves its own videowhich if you guys want to see that Icould possibly do that sometime in thenear future but today we're gonna befocusing on installing one of the lastversions of OS 2 which is warp 4 sowe're gonna go ahead I have the fourpieces of installation media that weneed which is one CD and three floppydiskettes now os/2 this versionoriginally and from what I could tell bythe files on this CD originally came onlike 40 floppy diskettes but then theymade a you know CD version which allthose 40 diskettes now fit on this oneCD I've been trying to actually trackdown a floppy disk version of os/2 tokind of do another you know floppy diskinstallation marathon like we did withboth Windows 95 in office 97 on thiscomputer but we'll just have to savethat for another daywe're gonna start off by putting in theOS to install this get into thiscomputer's floppy disk drive and we'regoing to turn it on and I'm gonna goahead and adjust the camera here andgive you guys a better view of themonitor so it's reading off of thefloppy drive the activity light is onand there we go oh yeah now it'sdefinitely it's in definitely readingfiles from that in that disk is he upthere at the very top it just says os/2alright check that out so we've got bigblue giant IBM logo os/2 warp versionfor installation copyright 1987 1996remove the diskette and insert os/2 diskat number one which I have right here sowe're going to remove the installationdiskette we're gonna put in os/2 disknumber one it's going to ask for the CDat some point so we're just waiting forit to load the setup wizard here itdidn't ask for the CD I wonder if we'resupposed to have the disc in the driveit didn't ask for it but the theactivity light on the heart on thefloppy drive is solid green right nowthen we go ahead and pan over you guyscan probably see so yeah there we goso alright guys well believe it or nothum we've run into a couple of issuesbasically what was happening is theInstaller wasn't loading successfully itwas basically the system was hanging onthat os/2 like wallpaper screen and Idid some research and kind of found outthat os/2 warp 4 really only supportshard drives like up to 8 gigabytes sothis hard drive in here is like an 80gig hard drive so I'm thinking it wasprobably something with like thehardware I had read some comments ofpeople saying that if you tried on a youknow system with too fast of a CPU itmight you know caused some issues whichthis computer is I think Weig succeedsthe recommended system requirements forthis so I actually went ahead anddownloaded os/2 warp version 4 5 2 whichis the last release by IBM whichapparently has a lot of bug fixes andshould you know allow us to actuallyinstall it andfor bonus points well I guess non bonuspoints if you like floppy diskettes it'snot on any floppy disk guys there's onlytwo CD images one of them is the bootimage and the other one is the actualinstallation so with that being said Iam now going to put in the OS 2 4 5 toboot image into the driver we're gonnarestart the system here and boot it fromthe CD and hopefully we should be ableto get a lot farther than we did italways seems like nothing ever works thefirst time that's just kind of a themewith his views it's like nothing everworks the first time you always gottalike you know we always have to changesomething so this already looks a lotdifferent it says always to warp at thebottom internal revision 14.86underscore w-4 ok so this is again thisissue of this monitor like it's kind ofoff the screen so it says somethingcreated one LVM compatibility volumesystem as per your research so thevolumes can be recognized during systeminstallation remove the diskette fromdrive a which there's notice cut it inthe drive a insert the installationdiskette in the drive bay we don't havean installation this cut and then pressand hold the ctrl alt delete keys toreboot so I assume it's talking aboutthe the boot CD that's like already inthe drive because there's Larry nothingin I mean there's nothing in the floppydrive right now I could use thisinstalled diskette but this is from theolder version so and this thing that Idownloaded didn't come with any floppyimages so let's just try to just pressctrl the lead with the CD in here soI'll press ctrl with the lead right nowok so we're at loading please wait onceagain and let's see if it ok here we goso this is a lot of difference right nowit says insert the os/2 warp cd-rom intothe cd-rom drive and press ENTER so letme go ahead and grab that and it is nowloading requested files welcomecongratulations on your purchase of IBMos/2 or version for os/2 or version 4contains the following powerfulcomponents and services file and printsharing services Netscape communicatorlet's go to volley management agenttcpip services and java virtual machinethe following panels will guide youthrough the installation of the os/2warp operating system and the networkingservices that you selectos/2 warp operating system to version 4operating systems to referencesthroughout this these programs refer toos/2 warp version 4 operating systemproduct which was including those two orplus IBM there okay so this will justpress enter thank you IBM for thatwonderful super detailed explanation ofhow many names that you use to refer toyour operating system man it's like justdefining things and the term hard diskrefers to a physical drive a partitionis a physical segment of a hard disk soit kind of like defines the terms harddisk and partition if you didn't knowwhat those were and yet os/2 is in someways very similar to Windows in thesense that it uses kind of the same filestructure it uses like the C Drive ituses very similar file types and youknow uses exe files bath files so ifyou've never used os/2 before you'regoing to see some similarities toWindows at least in kind of the way thatthe OS file system is structured butthat also is because this was partiallydeveloped by Microsoft this version wasand this was an IBM exclusive versionbut so os/2 recommends that we use thehigh performance file system whichactually was developed by Microsoft soyeah it's called HP FS and it'sbasically a you know improvement of theprevious fat file system so we're justgonna use that and of all you maycontain data you choose the format ofvolume that may have data yes we we knowthat so we're gonna press ENTER toformat the volume and continue theinstallation process so yeah we aredefinitely getting much farther than wepreviously did but you can see this iskind of what I was talking about beforeyou see down here where it says copyingfiles cos2 DLL where's it sis files DLLfiles there's a lot of similarities toWindows like I said in D structure andcertain file types that are used in thefile systemchecking your workstations configurationokay so right here is where we want toenter in or this is this is actuallyvery nice it's like very very graphicalhere so it's got your systemconfiguration it's got your you knowlocale so it's it's kind of figured outthat we're in the US and we have theu.s. keyboard layout you know becausethis is obviously you know this versionwas released in the US so the mouse wehave a ps2 you know we have this HPmouse Louis is you know much newer thanthe system itself so we're just gonna gowith the you know generic ps2 mouse SVGAdisplaying all right so for all of thecomponents that you know wants us toactually select here we're just going todo everything except the printerutilities because you know we don'treally have any of that hooked up I dowant to go under tools and games and seecuz ya see there's some things that it'snot going to have installed so we'regonna get this 3d graphics library andthe optional bitmaps and see underavailable here I think it's actuallyformatted this as a 2gig drive and nowit's gonna ask us for our name we'regonna put in now let's do MichaelMJ D Department I mean I don't reallyhave a department and we'll just sayYouTube company MJ d why not and selectservices to install let's get everythinghere as well see we got Netscapecommunicator yeah now it should actuallysort though yeah so now it's actuallygonna copy the operating system filesalright so now you have kind of a screenwhere it's going to give you some blurbsabout you know IBM and os/2 s you seeright here says IBM means three thingsproviding global solutions for a smallplanet creating and applying advancedtechnologies to improve theeffectiveness and efficiency with whichconsumers run their businessesconstantly improving customersatisfaction with products and serviceswe provide thank you for your continuedsupport of IBM and os/2 it's got thisnice little graphic over here so this iskind of similar to kind of like whatwell I think a lot of versions ofWindows did this I mean Windows XP comesto mind for me but you know windows 98and Windows ME did this you know whileit was installing stuff it would kind ofshow you so you know just in very youknow brief like little text blurbs herewe're kind of telling you someone likedthe new features in whatever windowsrelease that it was this one here isactually kind of telling you some stuffabout IBM in general I kind of you knowwhat they stand for I guess so right nowthe system is rebooting so it hasfinished up that is definitely a goodsign so we're just gonna let it restartand it should boot up from the harddrive all right so it actually has to gothroughthe final stages it looks like of thesetup here so wow that is going insanelyfast at the bottom there so I guess I'mjust going to let it finish this up herealright so here we are the setup looksto have finished we actually have thiswindow that came up that is asking us ifyou want to install additional optionsso we can get things like Java 1.3 theJava one point 1.8 toolkit the OS 2toolkit so while this is installing Ijust kind of want to touch and brieflyon OS 2's interface you guys canprobably see that the general layout ofit looks you know very similar toWindows you've got icons here on yourdesktop you have a sort of taskbar downhere you have this os/2 menu which isyou know not exactly like the WindowsStart menu but it does have some youknow similarities but then I was to alsokind of takes it a step further andincludes almost like some little widgetsdown here one of them is this very coolyou know space monitor for your harddrive and it literally shows you a liveyou mean you can see like this numbersgoing down as I am installing stuff uphere it actually shows you the amount ofspace that's free on your hard disk likeright on your desktop and it tells youwhat drive that is actually reading fromwhich is the C Drive which is an HP FSvolume you can also click on this tokind of change it over to now this lookslike it's a battery monitor so if youwere using this on like a laptop youknow this is where it would show youyour battery charge right now it's youknow this is obviously not a laptop sothere's no battery in it and then if weclick it once again you can see thatthis here is your system you know verysimilar like if you go into task managerand go you know under performance youknow we're gonna show you those you knowgraphs of your CPU usage this is thatright here this is your you know systemresource monitor basically and if weclick it again we're back to the youknow disk space monitor so going fromyou know starting at this icon righthere this is kind of your applicationyou know switcher basically this showsyou all of the applications that areopen on your system so there's like thisdesktop button right here this isactually going to take you back to thedesktop so if I had for example if Iopen up this OS 2 system what I can doisthen go to this icon hit desktop and itwill you know take all the windows offthe screen and then I can go back in theair I can do it os/2 system and you knownow it's going to show back up so thisis kind of your your way of switchingbetween applications and also viewingand minimized applications which I willshow you guys in a minute how that worksnext to that is actually a feature thatallows you to lock your system thatlittle lock right there what I can do isput in a password I'll put in mjd andyou see it doesn't actually show up andwe'll just hit OK and now it's actuallygoing to lock the system out and you cansee that there was actually no text boxor anything like that let me just goahead and kind of resize the camera herethere's no text box or anything what youhave to do is actually just type in yourpassword all you know on this blankscreen and press enter and it will youknow log you back in what I could do isif I type in the wrong password and Ipress enter it will you know show up andsay you typed an incorrect password tryagain so that is kind of a very easy waykind of if you're working on like a youknow sensitive document or something andyou know someone walks by you don't wantthem to see it you can just press thatand now that it's got my you knowpassword saved it'll instantly lock youknow just like that so I go ahead andlog back in here and there you go movingon this next option is actually yoursearch option where you can find objectsso if I wanted to for example find allExe files on the system I can press okand now it's actually going to gothrough and start finding Exe files nextto that is actually your shutdown optionyou can press this it's a littlecomputer icon with an X on it and thatis actually indicating you that this isthe shutdown button so when you pressthat it'll ask you right here are yousure you want to shutdown the systemwe're just gonna say no who don't wantto shut it down at the moment next tothat you actually have your trace whichare where you can actually make multipledifferent system trays basically I havetwo of them right now so right now thisis tray one I can also switch to traytwo which I made and now you can seethat everything to the right of thisicon has disappeared so you can actuallykind of customize this the way that youwant to but this is just kind of whatcomes by default on this system trayhere next to that are your drives whenyou actually click on this it will showyou a list of all of the drywas able to find on the system but youcan see that some of these like forexample I don't have a drive B drive Dis gonna be your cd-rom drive a is goingto be the one floppiness that I have soit's you know probably I mean I don'thave a drive B which is you knowprobably just there as like aplaceholder thing yeah there's there'sliterally no no no drive B on the systemat all next to that is your printerswhich of course I don't have then youhave your volume control which you justtook a look at earlier and next to thatis called a system setup it's verysimilar to the windows control panel youbasically have a list of all of youroptions that you can modify and finallynext to that is your command prompts youhave a list of different command promptsthat you can do here so you can startDass from drive a you can start dosfullscreen dos in a window you can startOS to fullscreen or in a window and thenyou can also run win os/2 which isbasically a a sub system essentiallyversion of Windows if I launch this hereit will literally launched a version ofthe do this this right here is likeWindows 3.1 I can go to about programmanager you can see it says IBM 1 os/2program manager version 3.1 so this isagain one of those features that I wastalking about where there was a lot ofyou know development from Microsoft aswell were they literally in some waysbundled basically like a windowssubsystem in os/2 here because this isliterally you know the big big this isWindows 3.1 I mean it's got all the sameprograms but it's just kind of runninglike on top of os/2 here you can tellit's a completely different interfacelike this is your Windows 3.1 interfaceand if I open up an os/2 window righthere here's an OS two window you can seeit's a completely different interface soit's actually very interesting when Ifirst saw this I thought this was justreally bizarre but it was so interestingbecause I mean this is something thatessentially had ended up competing withWindows but it had like literally and helike mini version of Windows in it andthat's kind of what you know one of theslogans that IBM had for os/2 is it's abetter dog than dass and it's a betterWindows than Windows because it had bothcompatibility with dos and windowsprograms so yeah basically if you had a- back in the day it would be veryconvenient for you to run not only OS toapplications but also ms-dos and windowsapplications all on this one system sothat was definitely one of the very veryawesome features of os/2 if you actuallyhad it but do you guys know what isinconvenience managing passwords yes itis something that we all have to do evenif we don't like it and it's veryimportant to you know use multipleunique passwords on all the websitesthat you use it's something that we'veall heard before some of us just youknow disregard some of us you know putit off and say we're gonna system this is verysimilar actually in a lot of ways tolike the Windows 3.1 program managerbecause in here you can launch thingslike you know you have your tool barright here that is actually a wholenother like interface that you can openup to have some more shortcuts to thingsand what's also pretty neat about os/2is that by default it actually leavesall of the windows that you had openedup like I had this you know volumewindow opened up like when I shut downso that is actually a very neat is itwill try to actually keep all of yourwindows that you had running even ifthey were in the background like thatthe old volume thing was actuallyminimizing that has something else thatI want to talk about as well is you knowas to you you don't really minimizethings to the taskbar in the sense thatwe think that you do with Windowsobviously this isn't Windows it's youknow got some similarities at windowsbut it also has some differences and oneof those is kind of how it managesactual windows like if I open up thisos/2 system window here and this is wellI also want to talk about is the designof these three buttons over here you cansee that they are not as distinct asthey are in Windows you know there'sthey still have the three same buttonsup here close maximize and minimize Idon't think they're really called I meanso this right here is the close buttonthis little square with the line throughthem that's actually going to close outof itthe one next to that is actually goingto minimize it but instead of actuallyminimizing to the taskbar like inWindows it actually minimizes down toyou know this icon right here basicallyso it kind of saves that window stateand puts it back in the icon so now if Iwere to double click on this I can openit back up you can also go to yourapplication switcher down here and seeall of your open applications and yousee that one of those is os/2 system soinstead of kind of having all of you oryou're like a minimize applicationsspread out across the taskbar herethey're all contained in this littlewindow switcher here now if I were tohit this button over here well this onelet me show you that will actuallymaximize that okay and then that now itchanges to a minimize or to a restorebutton now if I were to close out ofthis and now if Igo down here you can see that it's nolonger in here and there's also notthat's like you know it was line patternover the icon so kind of saying thatthere's no active Windows from thisapplication one thing I also want toshow off is Netscape communicator soreally go ahead and just hit next herewe're gonna put in our name we don'thave an email address or that you knowthere's no point in putting one in we'lljust use the default profile why not andso Netscape communicator I believe iskind of an all-in-one application so notonly does it have a version of NetscapeNavigator which is the web browser butit also has a mail application as wellit's got news groups Netscape news Groupan address book and a composer righthere which I believe is it's going toyeah so this is just a sample you knowtext editor so yeah so that's whatNetscape communicator is obviously thisisn't actually going to load here we cango to about communicator and see whatversion this is so this is version twofour point six one for os/2 warpcopyright 1994 to 1999 NetscapeCommunications Corporation so that ispretty cool it's obviously got some IBMbranding as well since this was aversion created for os/2 so yeah ifyou've used Netscape Navigator beforethis is pretty much the same interfaceit's just running under os/2 and it'salso got some of these other netscapeapplications in here as well which isdefinitely very very nice now again ican close out of this window right hereand I can kind of well that's actuallygoing to close netscape you knowcommunicator there but if i wanted tokeep it running in the background what icould do is instead of you know closingout of it I can hit into this buttonright here and actually minimize it andyou can see it's actually still going tokeep this little Netscape toolbar uphere which is actually very useful ifyou wanted to just be on your desktopkind of you know doing some work maybetyping something in like a Word documentand then just want to get quick accessto your email and you just boom hit itright there and your email is gonna popup just kind of imagine this actuallyloaded a proper email inbox and you knowthe same thing with a navigator youcould just tap that there orbut you could click on that and it'sactually an open up Netscape Navigatorso definitely very very nice also onething that I want to show you guys aresome of the programs that are installedhere we're not gonna really touch oneverything I do want to briefly touch onthe gameswe do have a version of solitaire wehave well we have mahjong solitaireKlondike Solitaire and os2 chests os2chests I think I actually years agoinstalled os/2 in a VM and tried out theyou know chess program so we're gonnaactually um be a human on this side andon the other side we're gonna be acomputer you can change the difficultyof the you know computer if you want tobut you can also play you know with twohumans which is pretty cool so we'llactually put this guy on advanced hereand hit OK and I can you know just likeI can do with any other window I canresize it make it a little bit largerthis version of chess I believe isplayed by clicking on the piece that youwant to move and then clicking on thetile that you want to move it to so yeahyou know this is chess running underos/2 so we'll go ahead and actually justminimize that I do also want to touch onits go under programs here in gamesKlondike Solitaire this is a version ofsolitaire that was you know created Ithink this was actually made by IBM aswell yeah Klondike Solitaire so yeahthere are a lot of programs that I saidare kind of developed by IBM but there'salso a me know like I kind of mentioneddown here there's kind of this entirewindows subsystem what you could also dois run like when os/2 in full-screen soif you wanted to literally you know kindof use the Windows interface if you weremore used to that you could completelyswitch to this interface is definitelylike more what you know what I'm used toI haven't really used os/2 a whole lotbut now you have this icon down here foryour os/2 desktop and if you kind ofrestore that it's it will actuallyswitch you back to your os/2 desktop soit's actually very very cool and I justthink it's very unique that youliterally have like a Windows 3.1subsystem and yeah it is just kind ofcool to see like I said when I first youknow heard about os/2 and kind of try itout I thought this was really bizarrebecause I was like this is so weird cuzyou know this is kind of in pain ways acompetitor to Windows buthad a Hilton version of Windows but youknow one of the interesting things isyou can see that like this was releasedin 1996 right but it still has like aWindows 3.1 the subsystem even thoughthat was you know released in 1992 andthat was because that you know it wasaround the time that Microsoft releasedWindows 3.1 that they split off and youknow stopped of developing os/2 with IBMso there wasn't gonna be so like IBMdidn't get the chance to work withMicrosoft like kind of integrating anewer version of Windows you know intoos/2 Microsoft wanted to kind of gotheir own way and then end up being alot more successful as we all know againthat is a story though for another timeI'm kind of just briefly you knowtouching on it here but overall guysthat is an
